"Many Farmers Have No Fodder or Hay At All," Kingston Whig-Standard. May 7, 1934. Page 1. ---- Conditions Near Laura, Sask., Reported Bad - Farmers Are Considering Destroying Their Horses. --- SASKATOON, May 7-(CP)-Many farmers in Montrose district, near Laura, Sask., have no fodder or hay whatsoever, according to A. B. Chambers, large scale farmer of that vicinity, who today contradicted statements made here Saturday by Hon. Howard McConnell, K.C., Saskatchewan Minister of Municipal Affairs.
At the junction of four municipalities, Montrose, Harris, Perdue and Loganton, near Laura, the feed situation was very drastic, Mr. Chambers claimed. Horses were being turned loose on the prairies and roadsides to shift for themselves. There was not enough fodder in the district to last even a week, he claimed.
Most farmers had enough seed grain, but were without the power to plant it. Horses were being fed seed grain at the rate of three to four bushels a day on many farms.
Not many horses had been shot up to date, Mr. Chambers added, although, if conditions became much worse, farmers were considering destroying many animals. Conditions in all four municipalities were practically the same.

Selkie Tales - Karen Heath
Author’s Synopsis:
Annie Shaw, a high school graduate born by the sea but raised far from it flees from the cruelty of her thoughtless boyfriend. She is drawn to a small unknown town on the Maine coast where she discovers family she never knew, and through a series of stories, learns she may be a creature of Irish legend and myth, a selkie if she enters the ocean on Midsummer Night. Swimming into the ocean on that magical night has its consequences: some selkies never return to the land. If she finds her heritage in the ocean, will she belong to it forever?
Book Synopsis:
High School champion swimmer Annie Shaw, raised by her aunt and uncle far from the coast of Maine, has no idea why she enjoys anchovy pizza when everyone else munches on pepperoni. She overlooks the fact her hands and feet morph slightly when she’s racing down the swim lane, until her boyfriend thoughtlessly points it out. Fleeing from him, she accidentally ends up in Shelmerton Cove, a place where legends are real. There she discovers she has family that she never knew about, a centuries-old feud which involves that family, and a storyteller who sends her back into the time and space of those tales to learn about her heritage and the consequences of swimming in the ocean on Midsummer Night...does she belong to the land or to the sea?
Review’s Synopsis:
I bought this book from an Ebay post, having never heard of the artist or this title prior. And a general search came up with a very few pages regarding this book title. Yet, I took the chance to buy it and read this book to see if it was any good.
The story follows a young high school girl named Annie Shaw who lives with her aunt Kate and uncle Ian in Loganton. She is an avid swimmer, best friends with Amy, and dating a young man named Dave. Her life is pretty much a secret that unravels during her going away party that was hosted by the Swim Team.
There, she is assaulted by her possessive boyfriend. She manages to escape him and drives off towards Maine’s rocky coast where she arrives at a little diner called the Tea L. Sea Cafe and meets Deidre and the Mayor of Shelmerton Cove who gives her a tourist brochure.
She arrives, by chance, at Shelmerton Cove and goes to the ocean. Entering the waves, her feet begin to change into flippers. She panics and retreats to an open bar, looking for answers and finds many members of the community that seem to know who she is.
She begins to learn that there are three primary families that live around the cove: the Shaw’s, Flaherty’s, and the O’Shaughnessy. She is offered a job at the Oyster Bed and Breakfast and works for her Aunt Kat, sister of Aunt Kate.
She was also offered a job by Angus Flaherty as a record keeper, but her family warns her to stay away from the Flaherty side of the cove.
Curiosity sends her to meet Angus, and finds that the Flaherty’s side of the cove is gloomy as compared to the Shaw’s and O’Shaughnessy side.
Surprisingly, Annie finds Angus to be kind to her, though very grumpy as all the other Flaherty’s.
As the story progresses, she begins to fall in love with a young man named Roane, a postal worker...and throughout the story, you will join her in meeting the family who all hold a fragment of who she truly is.
The fantasy part of the story really kicks in when she visits an old storyteller named Casidhe who reveals the history of the Shaw’s and the O’Shaughnessy’s ... revealing that they are actually selkies. She of course doesn’t believe in selkies and enters a state of denial as the seals seem to watch her, the people whisper secrets, and the Atlantic Ocean haunts her dreams.
We learn that the Flaherty’s are actually Finfolk...an Orkney seafolk Mythology of sea sorcerers from Finfolkaheem and Hildaland. They are feuding against the Shaw’s and O’Shaughnessy’s for stealing their precious black pearl.
Roane takes Annie out onto the sea in his boat and after visiting the islands and more family...she and Roane travel to the lighthouse where she sees the ghost of William Harkins who gives her a spyglass and she sees her deceased parents on the beach--but as selkies.
This causes Annie to lash out in anger as she denies that her parents were selkies and tells the gathered seals that they lack human intelligence to understand. Her actions hurt Roane, but he honors her silence as they return to shore.
With Midsummer Night hours away, the selkies do everything to keep Anne away from the ocean; however, Angus Flaherty tells her that she will learn her answers if she goes to the ocean at midnight.
She does as he advises and witnesses the people of the community entering and exiting the ocean, turning into seals--and seals turning into humans.
Roane senses Annie’s presence as he takes her down to the ocean just after the ritual finishes and the people leave the beach.
There, Roane helps Annie accept her selkie heritage, but warns her that a selkie does not know if they will remain a seal upon transformation, human upon transformation or if they will be able to switch back-and-forward. Annie fears being trapped as a seal forever, but trusts Roane’s wisdom and follows him into the sea where she transforms into a selkie and swims in the ocean.
She and Roane return to shore where upon beaching, she is able to switch back into a human...having to guard her seal pelt from being stolen.
Near the end of the story, Malachy O’Shaughnessy returns Moire’s (Anne’s mother) mother-of-pearl box back to Annie. Annie senses that she already knows what it is as she takes it and her seal pelt to the ocean and goes to the place where her parents drowned and finds out that Angus Flaherty had failed to calm the storm and was unable to save her parents.
She angrily goes to Angus who tells the rest of the story about how her parents had died, and his promise to watch over Annie, paying her tuition to the University of Maine and buying her a really expensive computer.
She forgives Angus and in return, returns the stolen black pearl to him. With the Finfolk power now greater than the Selkie’s magic, he could wipe out the families...but instead he meets with Malachy and together they ended the feud and brought peace to their families, curing the Finfolk’s treasure sickness.
Annie was later made into the next historical keeper of the Selkie families of Shelmerton Cove.
Thoughts:
I actually enjoyed this book, having come from an ancient family line from the Orkney Islands and Ireland. I approched this book with prior knowledge about Finfolk and Selkies...and to see that the author stayed true to their nature was very nice to read about.
The character Annie was a delightful character to read about, and it is easy to sympathize with her struggle in learning who she is.
I am glad the story of Amy (her friend in Loganton) and the story of Dave did not take central focus...I really did not like Dave! He was the absolute worst!
The storytelling part of the book was ingenious! A nice way to tell the backstory about the characters and nudging the story along as each foreshadow tends to lead into the next conflict in the story.
I also loved the characters of Angus Flaherty and Kathleen ‘Kat’ Shaw, they helped to flush out the character of Moire Ann ‘Annie’ Shaw.
One issue that I noticed was that the book was full of grammar issues, and occasionally dialogue of characters was not separated in their own paragraph.
