Raggedy Ann art style masterpost!

Sorry this is a long one, but I need to make examples! After over a hundred years, how Raggedy Ann is drawn in books and merchandise has changed a LOT, and I'm obsessed with identifying different eras of the art styles and how they're combined. These aren't all of them of course but here's a few major ones.

First off, the original Johnny Gruelle & Co. style. These are the books from her first appearance in 1918 to the late 40's, when she was now being drawn by Gruelle's family. Early on they look more like literal dolls, but as the years go on they look more lively and round.

We get different illustrators throughout the 40's to the 60's, but the little physical merchandise outside of the books continues to lean toward the Gruelle style.

In the 70's, Hallmark owns the licensing, and as expected they go ALL out on merch. This era is defined by childish proportions with large heads, big eyes, and a checkered-shirt Andy.

In 1977 we get the Raggedy Ann and Andy Musical Adventure movie! Here's the most commonly used promotional art:

But this barely gets a chance to exist on its own, because in next two years both Chuck Jones holiday specials are released. As a result, there's a whole lot of promotional stuff that combines these two styles in a very strange way. Often, Ann and Andy (and Arthur) are in the Chuck Jones style, with the title and Camel from the movie. Sometimes side characters from both pieces of media make it in!

In the late 80's, the CBS Adventures of Raggedy Ann and Andy show along with the corresponding Grow and Learn series of books are released, with a new art style:

It's similar to the 1977 movie again, but as if they re-designed it from that above promotional shot alone. They're very much stuck in the one shape, instead of squishing and stretching like rag dolls as they do in the movie.

In the 90's you have the Snowden Target collab, which is pretty easy to spot since it's the most blatantly red & green christmassy thing you've ever seen.

Aaaaand last (and maybe least) we have Simon & Schuster's Classic branding in the 2000's. These are recognizable by solid black eyes with no whites, having the exact same expression in every picture, and visible stitches.

I will release you from this Raggedy Ann prison now. Go forth and be free with your new unnecessary Raggedy Ann knowledge.

Also, don't need to have read it but this is technically intended to tie in to my fic Happy wife, happy life (but tldr Jamie regularly calls Gary his wife partly to keep their relationship under wraps but mostly bc. he finds it funny to call Gary his wife.)

“Obviously we’re done for the season right before pride month kicks off,” one of the CBS producers is saying, eyes darting over something on an iPad. “And since you four have been pretty popular we were thinking of including you in some of those ad campaigns, so if I could just get some dates off of all of you –”

“No,” Jamie says immediately.

All three of his colleagues snap their heads up to him, but only Kate looks at him coolly and says “no?”

Micah, because he’s Micah, chuckles and slaps Jamie in the shoulder, trying to diffuse some of the new tension in the air. “Not like you to turn down extra cash, Carra.”

Jamie rolls his eyes, pretends not to notice the way Kate’s eyes are burning into him. “Check my contract. Wish I could, honest,” he says to the producer, feeling very very glad that he had a clause added to his contract specifically so that he doesn’t have to take part in things like this, “But it just wouldn’t be do-able. You lot ‘ave fun, though, with yer rainbows and yer glitter.”

Kate just looks at him incredulously. “This is one thing you decide to take a stand on, mister ‘I don’t care about politics’?”

Rainbows just don’t really suit Jamie, is the thing. Nor does the extra scrutiny that comes from wearing rainbows.

Doesn’t really matter to him what Kate thinks of him, though, so he just shrugs and continues packing up his stuff for the day.

“Jamie – Jamie, I finally got onto Raya, can you have a look at my profile?”

Jamie looks up at Micah with a frown. “What the fuck is a Raya?”

“It’s a dating app,” Kate says from her end of the desk, in that unimpressed tone of hers that makes Jamie wonder why she’s bothering to insert herself into the conversation at all.

“An exclusive dating app,” Micah corrects, wiggling his phone in front of Jamie.

“Weren’t you already seeing someone?” asks Jamie, but he accepts the phone with a sigh and puts his glasses on. “I don’t – I’ve never used one of these things, what am I meant to be lookin’ at?”

Micah shrugs. “Didn’t work out,” he says breezily. “How have you never used a dating app, you’ve not been married that long. And look at yourself, you can’t tell me you weren’t a player before Mrs Carra came along.”

Jamie had got around a bit, in his playing days. Not much, mind, because he’d had to be careful, but he’d done alright. Unfortunately – and this is not something he’ll ever admit to anyone, even under duress – any thoughts of that had gone out the window the moment he’d walked onto the Sky campus after retiring.

“You’re right,” he says with a wink, “look at me. As if I’d need an app to find myself a bird. Why’d you want me to look at this, I’m not exactly your target audience. ‘less there’s somethin’ you’re not tellin’ us,” he adds, elbowing Micah and waggling his eyebrows.

Kate looks on unimpressed as the two of them double over in laughter. “Not that any of us would have a problem if you were, right Jamie?” she says haughtily.

Jamie catches Micah’s eye and has to fight back another bout of laughter. “Dunno,” he says, “I can think of one or two problems I’d ‘ave if Big Meeks here suddenly tried hittin’ on me.”

Micah bursts out laughing again, his hand clapping to Jamie’s forearm, and Jamie can’t help but join in – it’s infectious, okay?

“God,” Micah says, wiping a tear from his eye, “can you imagine how your missus would react. I’d never be able to work in television again.”

“Nah, she’d prob’ly send you a fruit basket, thank you for taking me off ‘er hands.”

Kate clears her throat and the two of them sober immediately at the sight of her raised eyebrow. “Maybe cool it with the outdated banter,” she says, “or do I need to remind you boys that you’re not in a dressing room anymore?”

She storms off, he heels click-clicking away as Jamie and Micah look at each other and try (and fail) not to start laughing again.

“You didn’t want to bring your wife to the end of season party, then?” Kate asks politely, looking slowly around the room.

“Huh?” Jamie says eloquently, because he’s had a couple of glasses of prosecco and he’s not thinking as quickly as he usually might. “Oh, the missus. Yeah, she’s here but  – I dunno, she’s a bit shy, like. You didn’t invite Malik?”

Kate rolls her eyes, the way she always does when Jamie mentions her boyfriend. “Well, he lives in America. So.”

“Carra,” an annoying voice calls from just behind him, “Carra, come over ‘n meet Schmeichel? I’ve not seen ‘im in years, d’you know, I think I’d forgot how tall he was.”

Jamie puts a hand on the small of Gary’s back to keep him from bouncing around too much (the man is such a lightweight, it’s embarrassing), and says “I’ve already met Peter, you dolt. I work with ‘im, remember?”

Gary squints at him for a second. “You drag me all the way down to London, and then y’can’t even be bothered to –” he finally seems to realise that Jamie had been talking to someone, because he quickly shakes his head around a bit and holds a hand out to Kate with a smile. “You’re Kate, right? I love what you do on the show, honest, I’m always sayin’ people need to be meaner to James here.”

Jamie thinks he sees Kate blush a bit, like she hadn’t realised anyone else had noticed her dislike of Jamie, but she takes Gary’s offered hand anyway. “And of course you’re the famous Gary Neville, I’ve heard a lot about you,” she greets. “But aren't you still with Sky? What brings you to our little operation here?”

“Scopin’ out the competition,” he says with a wink, then turns back to Jamie. “Carra – Peter?”

“I said no! I’ll talk to him later, stop badgerin’ me.”

“Did you two travel down from Manchester together?” asks Kate, “You know, Jamie seems so invested in my relationship but none of us have ever met his wife, do you know where she’s got to?”

“Ah, his fuckin’ wife,” Gary mutters, smirking up at Jamie. Jamie winks in reply and slips his hand down a bit to pinch him on the arse.

Micah comes over, his tuxedo strained against his biceps, and he pulls Gary away from Jamie to throw an arm around his shoulder in a half-hug.

(Gary squirms a bit at the unexpected contact, but he still gives Micah a friendly pat on the chest.)

“Big Nev! It’s been ages, man – Jamie told us you were coming, but he’s promised that before and not delivered.”

“Been pretty busy, up in Manchester,” Gary says with a shrug, carefully extracting himself from under Micah’s arm and returning to Jamie’s side. “But I’m obliged to do the plus one thing at least two –” (“Three,” Jamie corrects,) “—fine, three times a year, and I figure there’re worse places to be.”

“Aw, you love it really,” Micah says. “I’ve always kind of wondered what it’s like to be a WAG.”

Gary rolls his eyes. “It’s a thankless job, to be fair.” He pokes Jamie in the bicep and adds “I’m going back to talk t' Peter, you miserable old twat. Honest, I’m always talkin' to Scousers fer you.”

“I already know –” Jamie starts to protest, but Gary’s already wandered off. “Ugh. Sorry about ‘im. You can’t take Mancs anywhere, can ya?”

The two Mancs he’s talking to look at him, unimpressed.

“He seemed nice,” Kate says carefully.

“He’s not,” Jamie replies.

“Good summer?” Micah asks, their first show back after the break.

“Brilliant,” Jamie replies with a grin. “It were my turn to choose the destination, so –”

“Ibiza?”

He nods. “Ibiza. The house was done just in time, too.”

“You know, I can’t really imagine Gary in Ibiza.”

“Oh, he hates it. Complained the whole time, but he does that wherever we go.”

He becomes aware that Kate is watching them from across the desk, not trying to hide that she’s listening to their conversation with curiosity. Jamie nods to her, all polite like. “Hows about you, Kate, good summer?”

“It was fine, I –” she shakes her head. “Sorry, you’re saying you go on holiday with Gary Neville?”

Micah scoffs. “Who else would he go with?” he asks, and Jamie points to him in agreement.

“I dunno, his wife?”

Jamie blinks.

He thought he’d got all this out the way, dragging Gary along to the party a couple of months ago. Apparently not.

“Gary is my wife,” he says, then suddenly feels very stupid saying that to someone who’s not already in on the joke, so he corrects to “my husband, I mean. Obviously he’s not – he’s a man. Obviously.”

Kate’s eyes are wide, unblinking. She looks between Jamie and Micah, lips pressed together while her brain seems to be buffering.

“You’re married to a man?” she says eventually. “But you’re not gay, I mean – you’re –”

Jamie, who last time he checked definitely was gay, raises an eyebrow, amused. “I’m what?”

“You’re a footballer,” she attempts, and oh, this is far too easy.

“Bit ‘omophobic, that, sayin’ footballers can’t be gay,” he replies, holding back a smirk.

“Oh shut up, you know what I – you’re a lad! You’re always with the banter, and the…”

Thierry wanders over, freshly brewed cup of tea in hand. “What have you two done this time?” he asks, looking pointedly at Jamie and Micah.

Jamie raises his hands to protest his innocence.

“Thierry,” Kate asks, reaching a hand out towards him, “did you know Jamie’s married to a man?”

Thierry rolls his eyes. “Ugh, fucking Neville,” he replies, and goes to sit down.

My Starlight Express HUMAN! Au: World plus citizens. Part one

General: Racecity, USA takes the place of the train yard and it’s centered around the 50s-60s. Racecity is the home of the Racing National Championship with it’s reigning champion being from Racecity.

-Richard “Rusty” McCoy

Rusty is 23 and is from a very religious and old fashion family. He lives with his father, Poppa McCoy (A former campion.) His mother, Belle McCoy and his brothers Fredrick McCoy(Flat-top) and Dustin McCoy (Hopper.) He dreams of winning the Championship with his father’s old racing car but is often bullied by the others. He has a major crush on Pearl

-Pearl DuPont

She is 22 and new to town and is from a rich and prominent family. She is friends with Dinah, Di, Buffy and Ashley and is often seen at the disco downtown. She is sought after by a certain new-comer in the race to be his partner, despite her promise to Rusty to be his partner.

-Derek “Greaseball” Russell

He is 26 and is the reigning champion of the National Racing Championship. He is pretty arrogant and self-centered and is the fiancé of Dinah (not to be confused with Di who is his sister’s girlfriend.) For all of his faults he is supportive of his sister’s sexuality. He is the main bully of Rusty. He is extremely proud of his diesel car engine that he says is faster than lighting. Is often seen around his fiancé and his gang. Has been undefeated for 10 years

-Gale “Greasy” Russell

She is 15 and is the little sister of Greaseball and is the girlfriend to Di. She is just under the age of qualification for the Championship but plans on playing in it next year. Her legal guardian is Greaseball and lives with him. She, like her brother is arrogant and self-centered. Works at the auto shop for some extra spending money (totally not because there’s a cute waitress at the dinner next door.)

-Dinah Campbell

She is 24 and is the fiancé to Greaseball. She works at the dinner and is a manager, she is the legal guardian of her distant cousin, Di. She is very loyal to Derek and has been his partner since she was 14 and he 16 (the partner qualifying age is 14.) Will often be seen at the disco. And will hang out with her fiancé and his gang (plus Gale)

-Dinah “Di” Humphrey

Di is 14 and is the girlfriend to Gale. She is nicknamed Di so that she doesn’t get mixed up with her Legal guardian and distance cousin who is also named Dinah. She works at the dinner where she is the newest waitress, but will often sneak out to see a certain champion’s little sister at the repair shop.

-Callum Benjamin “CB” Breaker

He is 24 and works for the McCoy’s at their scrap yard. And is a literal diagnosed psychopath who has unalived in the past sooo not the most qualified person for making sure breaks work properly. He has a type of obsession with Dinah (he’s been trying to sabotage Derek’s car so he can get with her.)

- Electra Futureman

22 and a newcomer to the Championship. He has more of a 80s aesthetic and look to him. His car is electric and is lighter than air making it more faster. Wants Pearl for his partner and travels with his own entourage (the components). Extremely full of himself and is a soar loser. Hostile towards Derek and Rusty.

What do y’all think? I decided to add both Bochum GB and Dinah and Wembley GB and Dinah because I really couldn’t decide. And I used a random name generator for both GB’s human names and used the first letter of the rest of the train’s names for the rest of it. More is to come!

Next part will be the rest of the freight trains and the coaches.

ive written this three times but tumblr keeps messing up and undoing all the writing i did :'(

but i wont let it discourage me! ive got a lot to say about the art i made even though its messy sketches on mspain(t) XD

i had been feeling burnt out and decided to draw comfort characters ( some that ive not drawn in a long time or have acknowledged but never drew before) and the carebears is a franchise thats been with me for so long i made a whole painting for class about it!

i made a list and with utter shock i realized that i basically bacame my owm worts enemy! the list grew so much (and is still growing :')) and i only drew a few characters so far

i know ill render these soon but the others will take a while

(but im really concerned about how im gonna tag this without being obnoxious 🥲)

i have like alot to say about these characters i drew because they mean so much to me and i never really could delve into them at school.

theres more i want to say and its under the cut! :D

so this is gonna get a lil personal but hopefully not too much to the point its boring ,:)

the first character i want to talk about is Ursula. i remember when i was younger being increadibly infatuated with her. i would draw her whenever i could. on chalkboards, the wall, i made paper cut-out of her and digitally drew her on ms paint! she was the first character that a had a desire to be close to in a way. a character albeit evil felt comforting and till this day make me tear up from how beautiful her design is! Ursula was the first female character i felt a strong aesthetic attraction to. (im just kinda a sucker for powerful women)

so i made sure to stay true to her design by keeping her body type and tentacles. basically just switching her hands and head to the carebears design (im still deciding whether or not to keep her hair)

second has to be Rosalina. she really made me accept and realize that i did have an attraction to the same sex ':) i loved playing as her in smash bros, listening/watching her story in galaxy. i never really 'got' the whole thing but reflecting and growing as a person did make me realize that not just fictional men look great but women too!

her design is based on the carebear cousins because the main thing was the mane! you dont really see a bear with a long loc covering its eye so having her different from the others i think gives good variety

third King Candy. oka y i recently feel back inlove with him! mostly because of @/ blackthewolf17's drawings of him!! and that made me rewatch the movie and wow! i remember liking his character a while back but i never really appreciated his as a villain! watching the movie and seeing the art made me remember the discussions i had with my fam about liking him and them not really understanding. (its kinda a running theme with a lot of the characters i like)

i wanted the characters the pop out and look recognizable. i kept the crown and collar. his belly badge is a paper covering his original badge! this one shows the crown and a few bits of candy. (leaning into the fact that he doesnt belong)

next is NME SalesGuy for Four. (such a clever name) this dude is literally a character that i was shocked by his stature! i mean what did i expect? falling for a dude that exudes tall energy but is literally a short king! this dude was there during some cool family times while watching right back at ya!

while looking for references, i found i cb comic and i loved how their legs looked. it wasnt bent like the originals on the cards and i thought they looked really goofy! so i went with that with the design becasue he just doesnt really fit with everyone elses stlye

fifth Rick Sanchez. man, this old man. has been with me through a lot. i saw a poster if the show before it premiered and two years after, i watched it and ive obsessed over him so much i made people watch Rick and Morty so i could talk with them about it. R&M really got me back onto tumblr because it was my entire personality since the show was at its peak and after. (old men tsk tsk) i made OCs Self inserts and played the mobile game. i literally memorized episodes to recite as i went to sleep. and analyzed frames of my fave episode to get better at animation!

i gave Rick clothes because i wanted him to have some flair. iconic elements of him is his tousled hair, coat and alcohol. (hes drinking 'happy juice')

Sixth is Coach Brunt. a girlboss of a villain! she took care of and orphan and made her feel like she was her own! shes determined, strong, fierce, fit, has a great voice, money, and kind. what more could a girl ask for?? this was another character that i had seen while watching CS with the fam. (still havent completed it tho)

i did break the rule and give her a tuft of hair also ':/ but i like her BB i gave her.

its a paw punching a heart (maybe too violent)

Seventh is Johan liebert. i really loved this dude. the series just made me think more about human nature and nurture. i met some cool people becasue of this dude. Johan in a way made me cope with the problems that happened in my life. he really was the character that i also found out i was ace+aro. i just loved drawing him. filling pages of my sketchbook and centering english papers based around him and the lessons i learned from seeing the bad in his character and how people might turnout to be similar and how it can be a problem. (idk if it made sense, but i learned to appreciate humanity more and not be so headstrong and become blinded by my views. but also learning that its good for people to know whats coming for the people that wronged you)

Johans BB is painted on white, so you wouldnt be able to see what he is all about :)

theres is so much already but eighth is Senpai. this Fker is my worst enemy, just like all the characters i drew soo much of this guy that i thought i was gonna go crazy, there was a pang in my chest when the drawings looked like trash. he was the character that made me want to get better at art and engage more with people. i made a fnf OC to be this dudes father. (it was some of the most wholesome thing i ever drew)

Senpai has a more basic design. he also has his identifying elements like the backpack and mic

ninth is Saul. my bbg. it started with the character but sadlt turned into a full obsession over Bob Odenkirk and finding all of his shows and movies that he directed of acted in. thankfully im not deep into it anymore. but when i regularly used instagram, you could see the decent into madness for him. i made animations and really detailed fanart. if Sen got me to draw my fave better, Bob made me attempt to perfect it.

his design sadly is my weakest. i wanted to add some fake hair on him. but im sure you can see that i got lazy. a few weeks ago i made versions of the BRBA&BCS cast as Geronimo Stilton characters and (sad excusee) but i didnt want to put more into the design because i became drained from looking at the growing list D;<

his BB is based on themis :)

tenth is Big Jack Horner. i love this man. i ironically said "he was the hottest character in the movie" on my third watch and man i actually believed it on the way out of the theatre. i wanted to see if anyone liked him like i did and to my surprise people did! this dude has such a great bod, voice, attitude and like many of the characters i like i ask, "is there any proof of death? i dont think so".

i havent drawn him in months and i dont like that i havents so he was the first bear i drew. his BB is a pie but i think ill add his insignia or have him draw on it like Oopsie bear to fit his situation.

like maybe something silly like a frowning face on his BB

im going to put eleven and twelve together because both play a similar role. my two men of science. ive only recently started to like Medic and Scudworth. these two bring such a great jot to me just like all to kooky men i like as well.

sadly, they both look the same, the only thing differentiating them is the glasses. i love their voices and design.

last thing i want to say is why i chose carebears as the main style.

Hello, hello, my pretty butterflies~! How are you guys doing? How did the weekend treat you all? Me... Well, the weekend brought a lot of new movies for me! And as always, I can't let slip the chance to share one of the many with you guys~. (　＾∀＾)

Have you heard of "Tin&Tina"? Apparently, the movie wasn't super successful when it was first released in Spanish theaters and festivals, but has been getting a lot of attention lately now that's been put up on streaming services.

Currently streaming on Netflix, tells the story of this spanish couple, Lola and Adolfo, that can't have kids, so they decide to adopt. For some –ironically– unholy reason they take home from a convent the most odd looking and behaving twins in existence– Tin and Tina who are fascinated with religion, god, the bible. As if them playing creepy music wasn't enough of a giveaway (*｀Д´)ノ！

Plot wise, the movie is just weird. It touches really sensitive topics, but never with enough depth. Other than religion, of course, since that's the main focus in the movie as the kids are literally obsessed and sadly lack the common sense to understand the bible. You have their tragic miscarriage. You have a bit of dysfunctional marriage, an absent husband, and even a bit too aggressive for my liking. ( I spent the whole movie telling Lola to get a divorce!) Of course, he doesn't believe anything his wife has to say, ever. Though I agree she had some untreated traumas that also built up a bit of paranoia on her side, we have overall a weird family dynamic.

Being based on a short film by the same director, I think the plot remained very consistent, at least. It becomes a bit confusing at times, but that, in my opinion, only helps build up the suspense and discomfort you feel watching the movie because you never know for sure what's going on. (* ﾟーﾟ)

I'm not sure how much budget they had, but production wise, I really like the whole aesthetic they had going. It's a movie based on the middle to late 80's, a place far away from the city, very rural. The coloring, the decoration, the little details like the shows that played on TV, the lightings, the music, the everything really. I found it very pleasant.

More than a horror, other than the one gore scene, I'd surely call it a thriller. It's very psychological, very unsettling when you put the scenario in context and you try to make sense of it all, but it's not scary in itself. It builds up tension successfully when needed. I wouldn't give it a 10/10, but I definitely enjoyed it and would watch it again in case I missed anything of relevance.

Got together ENTIRELY because SweatBoi publicly mocked and belittled Cole, after having previously admitted to admiring Cole.

Moar accurately is because BOTH of them are obsessed with Cole (not sure if Cabana Boi wants to be Cole or be Cole's bitch, but whatevs) and PP literally has CB cosplay Cole for her.

Neverrrr seen out together, unless it's a specific, very pre-arranged Power Couple Pap Walk

Excepting the above, very un-affectionate when together

Have taken ONE, 2 day vacay in this time----that, again, was entirely Power Couple/Pap Walk staged (Cari, despite having far less leisure time, then, took multiples).

Have yet to spend a major holiday together/with one another's families (Cari spent Easter with her parents DURING COVID, WHILE COLE WAS WORKING, a deeply significant occasion in the Catholic/non-USA world, when they'd been together for just 3 or 4 months---and Cole isn't even religious!)

Haven't moved much forward from dating for Power Coupling (Cari were making their move in plans....)

PP hasn't met his klassee parents, cuz he doesn't think she's good enough (Cari were fully integrated in one another's lives by that point).

Conversely, the few private things they do attend are all for HIS friends----which per the BB, is evvolll, cuz means she's neglecting her own life/friends to please him.....and he can't be bothered with her friends (granted not a whole lot of them, but still)....

They frequently do things with other peeps---without the other, even tho each could easily be there....per the BB, that constitutes cheating....

Which, in fact, based on their respective past interactions, etc....makes it quite apparent they both do (tho, LBR, I question the level of commitment/realness, anywayyyyy....).

PP is still endlessly depressed, losing her hair and gets zits.....I thought that was Cabana Boi's job to fix!!! And if she were "only loved", she wouldn't have these issues anymoar (ditto, ofc, her cult).

Per the BB, it's now "they're trying to keep things private".....except, again, both are fucking fame/attention whores....and, previously "keeping things private" was so it was easier to cheat/because you were ashamed of the person.....

Heelariously? Tho the point was to Power Couple/"fuck u, Cole!", ironically, it hasn't helped either of their careers or visibility.....soon the ONLY appearances they'll be making will be at the bdays of rando nobodies.....and Cari truly DGAF.....

Just last night I started short-lived ABC show The Catch from 2016, about a private investigator who discovers her fiance is a con man, and sets off on a quest for revenge, but also they love each other! It's kind of like if Good Behavior was PG-13 and also like, very normal and nice. It's on Hulu and I am enjoying it!

other stuff i watched this year: Well I am literally always watching my perennial background show Brooklyn Nine Nine, I also watched Ghosts CBS (delightful), The Bear (fraught! but compelling), among many others - and I've been really into crafting/cosplay youtube lately. Especially Rachel Maksy, Adam Savage, and Wicked Makers.

shows i dropped this year/didn’t finish: Okay I have to be honest I abandon like half the shows I start - I just get bored and distracted, I'm sorry!

shows I would like to watch: Succession, Yellowjackets, Only Murders in the Building, the rest of Nancy Drew, and so much more! It's endless, really!

currently reading: Between books at the moment! I think next on my list is to finish This is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone, which I started to read awhile ago, but then my Libby loan expired!

currently listening to: Sci-fi podcast Midnight Burger, about a classic roadside diner that travels in time and space, and its eccentric employees and customers. I really love it so far!

currently working on: I actually just started a new job, and am in the process of getting up to speed and all that. I'm pretty overwhelmed and nervous tbh, but also excited.

current obsession: Stardew Valley (although I just finished the community center and it did NOT give me enough points to get the statue of perfection from Grandpa's ghost so now I'm kind of annoyed! also I am enjoying how much that sentence is nonsense to someone who has never played).

Setting aside that there are literally 5 people on earth who could have sent this message: Dai Thomas! One of my favorite characters, and one so generally unknown that I feel comfortable calling myself his biggest fan! First appearing in Marvel Preview #3 (1975) Dai Thomas is a member of Scotland Yard who, while on holiday with his wife, watches her get crushed by a car during some superhero fight between Hulk and Thor. He vows that this bloody reckless form of "heroism" will never find its way to the UK, and this turns into something of an obsession for the man. He's a guy with a very stiff sense of honor, who will stop at nothing to lock up Captain Britain (Brian Braddock), the first superhero of Britain (do not look at the half dozen WW2 heroes behind the curtain) on basically any charge he can find with Braddock only getting off because he's too much of a square to run from the police.

This extends to hilarious extremes, wherein Thomas tries to arrest Braddock on the charge of faking his own death, while Braddock is saving Prime Minister James Callahan from a Red Skull kidnapping plot. More concerned with what CB is up to than in stopping the Red Skull. This is Thomas at his most Thomas.

Eventually Dai Thomas figures out Brian Braddock is CB by seeing Braddock on TV, once, and immediately going "ooooh no, nobody has a chin that looks that good". But *nobody* at Scotland Yard cares because CB is an upstanding member of the community, so he just has to cope and seathe. His existence after this is him slowly coming around on the whole Superhero thing and being an infrequent police constant throughout the X-Men spinoff book Excalibur, and then he was possessed by the spirit of Sir Galahad but that's a story for another day.

Could Shiki's story have been better if dandebi wasn't an otome game? Absolutely. It could've been a great explanation of dark feelings, what it means to "think good" vs be good, about agency and choice and autonomy

Is it really Shiki's fault, as a literal creation of god, that he's like this? Is it his fault if he was never given an outlet, let alone an explanation for his feelings? Is he in the wrong to cling to Ritsuka out of loneliness and drag her down with him, when that's all he's ever known? Is it wrong to punish people for aspects of themselves that they can't control?

Is Ritsuka to be blamed for her "bad choices" when her hand is forced? Is she to be blamed for developing feelings, when Shiki forces his way into her life at a low point? Is she really at fault for wanting to know the truth that's been kept from her since she was a child?

Personally, I'm much more fond of Blight. It was a really interesting choice to have Shiki barely hurt her himself, yet he still takes enjoyment in her suffering and they get a happy ending

But all that goes out the window when you have to balance out (Shiki x Player) fanservice sadism with ShikiRitsu development

And I get it. It's absolutely wonderhoy for the players. But what about afterwards? What happens to Ritsuka when the attraction is over?

I don't mean when her attraction fades, I mean when the players have gotten their fix and inevitably move on?

I guess it's silly to care about "what happens to Ritsuka" as if she's a real person, but fleeting stories are not my type. I like it when the characters can live on and continue their story, long after I, the player/watcher, have moved on

But that doesn't happen, does it?

It's brought up in both EverSweet and Charming Book, in his unit single with Mage, in his marketing long after the other boys have changed

Unit singles: Roen asks Maxxis to marry her. Rem and Urie both echo Destinare and Kimi wa Estella. Mage wants to to go on a journey with her. Lindo wants to protect her (in his own "padlocks around the windows" way, but by the end of the audio drama, he begins to understand that she is her own person). Shiki *still* wants them to die together

EverSweet: "god cursed me to die in agony if I don't feel loved. Oh? Why don't I feel loved? Because I still want to hurt you. Haha! I feel loved now, I don't want to hurt you anymore! :)"

Charming Book: "I most definitely don't want to hurt you anymore. It's just that this magical pipe, that draws out people's desires and amplifies them until they become distorted, yes this magical pipe corrupted me! The pipe is destroyed, I don't want to hurt you anymore :)"

And the only conclusion I can draw from that is that his selling point is the sadism, the attraction it creates for the player. Shiki's story is about the journey

Sure, sure, Shiki is still S (say that three times fast lol), technically. If you take "sadistic" to mean forward and dominant in personality. But that's not what they presented him as, and they know it. In both ES and CB, they have to bring the pain obsession back to make him Shiki again. There's nothing to Shiki once he "gets better"

Which sucks, because we could've had a great story exploring him

Recently read:

Broken Harbour by Tana French: This is a re-read, because Tana French is one of my favourite crime authors, and her style of writing has influenced mine. This one's fairly low down on my list of my favourites from her books, but it is still very, very good as I was reminded while reading this.

The Light in Everything by Katya Balen: I was actually going to put her previous book October, October on this list but I literally finished this one last night and my gods it is absolutely beautiful so I decided it had to be this one instead. I think this book has now made Balen one of my fave children's authors.

When Women were Dragons by Kelly Barnhill: an alternate history where women become dragons? That in itself is an intriguing premise, but it really goes deep into exploring femininity and attitudes to it, the power of family and friendship, the importance of remembering the past in order to change the future...so many things. I loved it.

Greek Myths: A New Retelling by Charlotte Higgins: In the past couple of years I've really gotten into myth re-tellings and most recently I have been drawn into Greek myth ones in particular, thanks to my first foray in participating in CBs, but I digress. I Am Margaret Moore by Hannah Capin: One of my major book obsessions from the last couple of years is Capin's previous book Foul is Fair and this has similar themes of sisterhood and friendship despite being a completely different book, so this is at the top of my to-read list. I haven't been able to find it in shops yet, and it doesn't seem that anywhere in The Libraries Consortium has got it yet but I WILL read this book one day. Some day, some how I WILL read it even if it's the last thing I do.

Reading:

Pandora by Susan Stokes-Chapman: I only started it this morning, so I haven't got far into it but it seems decent so far. I'll be honest I'm a little leery because it's been recommended for fans of The Binding, and I am most definitely not one of those. But I am giving it a chance, primarily because I want to see how Greek myth stuff is incorporated.
