title: the choice who: cassian barakzai (oc) & j.ohn c.onstantine fando.m: dc c.omics fic idea: blaze it notes: i had fun writing this and that's all that counts. i love cass & john. peace.
Cassian's whole thing is that she helps people. She doesn’t stay in one place to do it, she travels. It’s how she works, how she lives, and how people know her. And when she’s not doing that, she owns a little house full of cursed objects up in London; but currently, her sister is taking care of it and hasn’t called her about anything odd and seems happy staying in one place after having stopped working with Cass about a year ago.
Cass doesn’t really get how anyone can be happy staying in one place, but she likes knowing where to find Soraya, so it’s good she’s there. But really, all Cass needs to survive is coffee, her laptop, her phone, and whatever food is common in the area she’s in. She knows that makes her a bit basic, but she doesn’t necessarily care. The less she needs, the more she can get the job done. And lately, she’s been doing a damn good job out on the streets, helping people with their occult troubles.
Does she like magic? Not necessarily. Does she know some people who do? Yes. Is she everybody though? No. But due to her own mishaps with family, she has mixed feelings about the pros and cons and only manages to use it whenever she helps others, because she is gifted and was tutored by her mother who was taught by her mother before her. It runs in her blood. Not purely, but enough to where it’s not always going to cause her trouble, because she knows how to use it responsibly.
Which brings us here: London — but not near sister — where she’s trying to decide if she should be ethical or not with her magic. A child is involved. And so is a mother. A demon has made it to where she must choose who dies and who lives. She would typically choose an ulterior, come up with a plan where no one dies, but this demon is one she’s never seen before and so strong that it knocked the wind out of her when it threatened her with the choice.
Cassian considered automatically choosing the child, but at the same time, as she stood in the room with papers and chairs and objects flying around the room, she also thought about how hard a life that child would have knowing that their parent had died and let them live. But then Cass turned to look at the mother, who was floating above, her screaming filling the air as she levitated above ground, her child silent, just appearing to sleep. And well, Cass thought about her pain and how Cass couldn’t let her live with the pain of letting her live with the pain of having lost a child.
Cass was about to turn to look at the demon, but before she did, the doors to the room swung open and crashed closed. “Bloody hell, Cass — already told you to avoid shite like this. Your one weakness. You’ve never been good at it. Always get the nastiest of the bunch.”
“Can you stop lecturing me and give me a hand, John? People are about to fucking die!” Cassian shouted at him, unable to move her body due to the demon’s powers. She was angry at it, but also mad that John had ruined her thunder.
She was about to say something else but then he began to chant in two different languages that immediately gave Cass control of her body. And instead of helping John get rid of the demon — which dispersed before them — she ran over to the mother and son.
“Are you both okay?” she asked both of them, and they both nodded, hugging each other. “Good. I need you both to take care of each other, and go to your nearest doctor. Tell them you were attacked by an animal, but you don’t remember what kind because it was dark, yeah?” She patted both of their shoulders, and they nodded before doing as she said.
When they walked away, the mother with her arm looped around the son, Cassian turned to the side and noticed John there.
“Usually, I’d say I hate seeing your ugly mug, but currently it’s good to see you John.” Cass says, putting her hand out for him to shake.
He gives her an odd look, before shaking her hand firmly. “Likewise. But like I’ve said, you’re bad with conjuring spells, love. What in hell were you thinking?” “I wasn’t. I almost killed someone’s ma,” Cass admitted. “The demon would’ve killed the kid too once I chose the ma, i bet too. Then me. So thanks.”
John arched a brow. “You telling me thanks …is…” “Don’t get used to it. I’m just…near deaths, yeah?” “Yeah.” He paused. “Wanna smoke?”
Cass nodded. “Yeah.”
He lit her a cigarette and they walked out of the building, Cass thinking about how she almost died and almost killed two other people in the process.
