[BC]Backstory
[BC]Early Childhood [C] When Miliana was no more than five years old, her father had told her she was a mistake. She didn’t understand it, and she didn’t think about it. When she asked her mother, Lilian, she just smiled and said, ‘I love you.’ A few years later, her brother had turned fifteen and he was married. Miliana noticed a change in her father. He would get drunk, he would yell and storm around. In her early childhood, it was nothing but chaotic.
[BC]Adolescence [C] When she was eleven, her father became quiet and he was barely around, until he told her he wanted another son, it was then Miliana realized her father, Arthur, hated her because she was not what he had hoped for. The glass broke around her reality and she realized just how poorly woman were being treated, and she tried to raise her voice— to at least get it heard, but to no avail. At thirteen years, Arthur had gone on a sailing job, and Miliana’s mother became deathly ill, so she raided her fathers closet, dressed like a male, called herself Alexander, and applied for piracy, to pay for the medicine her poor mother needed.
[BC]Teenage Years [C]In the year Miliana had trained, not one of her shipmates suspected her to be female, not even the captain. Every few months, they would stop off at shore, and Miliana could take care of her mom. When she turned fourteen, she had told the captain who she really was. Miliana Winters, a bloodline split between aristocrats and rogues. The Captain revealed herself to be a female named Maieve, who sought to prove just how deadly she could be— but she was hiding herself too. Miliana was eventually getting sick of the people she had to live with, and how exhausting some things could be, and she couldn’t wait to go home and see her beloved mom. But on her fifteenth birthday, when she returned, her mom was gone and she was informed that she had passed away, almost just a few days after her previous leave. Miliana cried for days. The one person in her life who believed in her had passed away, and she couldn’t be more sad than she already was. When she returned to her ship, Maieve comforted her, and treated Miliana like a daughter. The two were a deadly duo, and nothing got in their way. A year later, when she was sixteen, Miliana had finally stopped grieving, because she had felt at home with Maieve and even became her first-mate(second in command). After these events, Maieve wanted Miliana to see what a pirate meeting was actually like, and how cruel these people could be. Little did Miliana know, Maieve was in a small, silent feud with another pirate captain, who went by the name 'Aaron’. Miliana saw just how truly disgusting pirates could be, and was regretting the decision she made to be Maieve’s second in command. When everything was finishing up, Maieve told Miliana to head back to the ship. After more than several hours of waiting, Miliana received the news that Maieve had been shot, and her whole world fell apart. After a few months of commanding the ship, she revealed her true self, and by now, her golden hair touched the floor. Her crew was astonished, and purely outraged that they would have to follow a female. Miliana challenged anyone who dared oppose her. She ended up killing five of her crew. When Miliana was nineteen, she had received a letter, saying the murderer was Rome Alarein, Aaron’s first mate. (It gets really long here so I’m going to shorten it to this: Rome admires Miliana, and she learns to admire him, but she does not realize it. This is over many, many meetings.) Near July, 1678 Miliana got into a feud with Rome. Their ships clashed together, and it was all-out chaos. Rome’s second in command held a gun pointed towards Miliana, just before he fired the gun, Rome got a hold of it, but the trigger had been pulled and the last thing Miliana saw was Rome holding the gun.
[BC]Young Adulthood (20-39 yrs old) [C] Miliana hid in secrecy, she had bought her old house and lived there until she was threatened by the assassins league. She was killed at thirty-one, in a miserable state.
[BC]Cause of Death [C] Unknown cause of death, suicide may have been plausible. [BC]▔▔▔▔▔▔▔
[BC]Relationships (Family)
[BC]Mother [C] Miliana was fond of her mother, and for a good portion of her life, her mother was the only thing she could hang on to. [Deceased]
[BC]Father [C] Miliana had a horrible relationship with her father, no other way to explain it. [Deceased]
[BC]Brothers/Sisters [C] Miliana had an okay relationship with her brother, when he was younger at least. [Unknown status]
[BC]Nieces/Nephews [C] Miliana met her niece once, or rather saw her at a bar in France. [Alive]

[BC]Relationships (Personal Life)
[BC]Romantic Interest [C] Rome was Miliana’s only romantic interest, which was ruined when he pointed a gun at her.
[BC]Best Friends [C] Maieve was very near and dear to Miliana, she even considered Maieve some sort of mother-figure to her. [Deceased]

New world news from Time: ‘We Have Limited Time.’ Thai Authorities Race Against the Rains to Free Soccer Team Trapped in a Cave
Stakes were raised Friday in the desperate effort to rescue 13 people trapped in a cave in northern Thailand as news that a former Thai Navy SEAL died on the mission was delivered under approaching storm clouds.
Thai authorities said the retired diver, 38-year-old Petty Officer Samarn Kunan, was volunteering to help distribute oxygen tanks throughout the flooded tunnels when he ran out of air for himself. The first casualty of a mission that has gone on for almost two weeks has underscored the dangers of a plan to extract the group by teaching them to dive.
But heavy rains are expected to resume in the coming days, while oxygen inside the cave has dropped to concerning levels. Authorities said Friday that a tube is being laced through the flooded passages to allow more oxygen in, but expressed for the first time that a back-up plan to keep them inside for months if necessary may not be viable.
“This mission is very tough,” Navy SEAL Commander Rear Adm. Arpakorn Yukongkaew told reporters under the thick clouds that gathered after two crucial days of sunshine that allowed some water to be pumped out. “We thought they would be able to stay there for a while, but conditions have changed and we have limited time.”
Read more: Grandfather of Trapped Thai Boy Says He’ll ‘Never Let Them Near a Cave Again’
Twelve boys between the ages of 11 and 16, members of the Wild Boars soccer team, and their 25-year-old coach were trapped inside Tham Luang cave, one of Thailand’s longest and most complex, on June 23 when sudden rains flooded their exit. The team was planning to have a birthday picnic for one of the players after practice. None of them know how to swim.
A monumental search effort involving more than 1,000 people and aided by at least seven foreign governments ended in a burst of jubilation late Monday when a pair of British divers found all 13 alive and in stable health. But the days since have been a rollercoaster of hope and anxiety as authorities weigh extraction plans, each uniquely perilous. Rescuers are now in a race against time to get them all out before further complications.
Weather conditions will be the determining factor in which method of escape is pursued — authorities are weighing three far-from-perfect options of either giving the boys a crash course in cave diving; widening existing holes in the cave’s ceiling and pulling them out from above; or resupplying them with food and other essentials for as long as it takes for waters to recede.
Lillian Suwanrumph—AFP/Getty ImagesThai soldiers and police gather in the mountains near the Tham Luang cave at the Khun Nam Nang Non Forest Park in Chiang Rai province on June 30, 2018 as the rescue operation continues for the children of a football team and their coach.
Even delivering provisions is difficult and could be further complicated by more rains. It takes expert divers roughly six hours to reach the trapped group from a Navy command center that has been set up about a mile deep inside the cave. They take another five hours to return in the fast-moving currents through pitch-black tunnels studded with stalactites and loaded with sharp turns. Divers have to remove equipment to squeeze through some narrow openings, while a few have already been widened to allow easier passage.
“The visibility in the water is still very bad,” Ivan Karadzic, a Danish diver volunteering on the mission, tells TIME. Expert cave divers who have spent thousands of hours underwater find the trip arduous. “Teaching the kids to dive is simple, but keeping them submerged for hours is going to be very complicated.”
It may still be the best option. Karadzic says local children from nearby villages have volunteered for test dives in lakes and rivers near the site, where rescuers are experimenting with options. They could try to push and pull the boys through the tunnels, with two or three SEALs helping each one navigate. At this desperate stage, all options are on the table.
It’s too early to attempt a dive as the boys are malnourished after surviving on only a few snacks made to last the nine days it took rescuers to find them. Video released by the Royal Thai Navy showed them gaunt and wrapped in heat-retaining blankets. The Governor of Chiang Rai province, Narongsak Osottanakorn, said Thursday that three of them are still very weak but in stable condition.
Helicopters circled overhead as light rain fell in the early afternoon, still searching for alternative entries. Police and soldiers patrol the jungle overhead for chimneys and fissures that could be widened enough to drop supplies and climbers down into the chamber as reality sets in that the boys and their coach cannot stay where they are indefinitely.
“These conditions are unprecedented,” Karadzic said. “To my knowledge, there has never been a situation like this before.”

Two U.S. Air Force B-52H Stratofortress strategic bombers integrated with Japanese Air Self-Defense Force (JASDF) fighter jets and U.S. Navy E/A-18G Growler electronic attack aircraft over the Sea of Japan, on June, 17.
During the mission, the B-52s conducted long-range escort and intercept training with four JASDF (Koku-Jieitai) F-2s and 12 F-15s to enhance the readiness and security of the region. In addition, the bombers conducted integration training with E/A-18G Growlers from the U.S. Navy’s Electronic Attack Squadron 209 (VAQ-209) “Star Warriors” deployed to Misawa AB, Japan.

The bombers, currently deployed to Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska from the 2nd Bomb Wing, Barksdale AFB, Louisiana, are supporting Bomber Task Force ( BTF) missions “to demonstrate the United States’ unwavering commitment to the security and stability of the Indo-Pacific region”.
“These strategic bomber missions provide our Airmen with the realistic long duration sorties that they require to remain highly proficient and ready to act when called upon to support the collective defense of the United States,” said Lt. New world news from Time: Grandfather of Trapped Thai Boy Says He’ll ‘Never Let Them Near a Cave Again’
It was supposed to be a special day for Night.
On June 23, his 16th birthday, family members came over to cook while he went off to soccer practice with his best friends, Tle, Nick and Note. After practice, they and the rest of their team, the Wild Boars, hopped on their bicycles and rode off for what was meant to be a half-day adventure.
“He’s a good boy, the only thing he cares about is soccer,” his grandfather, Sriward Sompiengjai, tells TIME at the compound in the northern Thai village of Vieng Hom, where the four boys live. A birthday cake still waits in the refrigerator for the young athlete, whose given name is Pheeraphat Sompiengjai. It may be waiting for a long time.
Twelve days after the team of boys, aged 11 to 16, and their 25-year-old assistant coach wandered into the nearby Tham Luang cave, Thai authorities are pooling all available resources to try to get them out. They were already more than a mile deep into the complex when heavy rains swept through the tunnels and trapped them inside, setting off a monumental search and rescue effort involving more than a thousand people aided by at least seven foreign governments, including the U.S.
A small tent city has since sprung up in a muddy field near the mouth of the cave, where 13 ambulances are standing by to rush them to the Chiang Rai regional hospital. Volunteers camp out at the site, cooking, keeping the grounds clean, giving haircuts and massages to the rescuers. “I’m very proud, and I was surprised,” Sriward says of the sudden support. “It shows that Thai people do not abandon each other.”
Lillian Suwanrumpha—AFP/Getty Images Photographs of Pheeraphat ‘Night’ Sompiengjai, one of the members of a Thai youth football team currently trapped at the Tham Luang cave, are seen on a wall at his home in Mae Sai on July 4, 2018.
The dramatic search at times felt hopeless; drones and helicopters scoured the mountain for alternative entries, while divers delved day and night through dark, dirty water for nine days with no sign of the group since their disappearance. But on Monday night, Sriward and his family jumped up from their seats in disbelief as news broke on TV that the 12 boys and their coach had all been found alive. For a few short hours the nation rejoiced that the search had ended. But the rescue is just beginning.
It could take days, weeks, even months to extract the boys, who cannot swim, and their coach, Ekkapol Chantawong. The governor of Chiang Rai province, Narongsak Osottanakorn, told reporters Wednesday that his preferred plan is to wait until water levels drop enough for the group to simply walk out the way they came. But with the monsoon rains approaching and tunnels still flooded, that day could be a long way off. “I think it’s impossible,” says Captain Wuttichai, who commands a unit of Thai Navy SEALs on the frontline of the rescue effort. “They need to learn how to dive.”

Following a medical assessment, SEALs began giving the boys basic lessons Wednesday. They have already tried on diving masks but have yet to jump into the muddy water that corralled them on a dry rock 12 days ago. Videos released by the Royal Thai Navy show the boys in good spirits but in weak condition; they had only a few snacks to last them the nine days it took rescuers to find them and are visibly frail. Wuttichai says it would likely take at least another day before they will be ready to begin training in earnest, but once they begin they’ll learn fast. They may have to — if water levels don’t recede and they cannot swim their way out, they could be trapped inside until the monsoon season ends in September.
Skies were blue Thursday for the second day in a row, presenting a brief window to pump out as much water as possible. Giant pipes spilling out of the cave’s mouth and plugged into holes drilled through the hillside kept gushing water out into the farmlands below. Levels crept slightly downward, but a single storm could set back the rescue for weeks. Alternative exits are being considered through chimneys above, which could be widened to allow climbers in and out. But entire new roads would likely have to be built to bring the equipment to the precise fissures in the jungle that drop down into the complex. Suggesting a long wait ahead, divers are being trained to install fiber-optic cable from a Navy command station inside the tunnels to allow the boys to talk to their parents.
Linh Pham—Getty ImagesRescuer workers prepare small diving mask to deliver inside Tham Luang Nang Non cave to continue the rescue operation on July 4, 2018 in Chiang Rai, Thailand.
“All options are being explored,” says Captain Jessica Tait, a spokesperson for the U.S. Air Force, who arrived on June 28 with a survival specialist and a team of pararescuemen — an elite special operations unit trained for search, rescue and medical response in almost any environment. The pararescuers, whose training is so rigorous it’s known as “Superman School,” will remain on the ground to advise and assist Thai authorities in their uniquely difficult mission. “These children had been in a cave for nine days, so you have to consider the physiological and psychological things that the kids are going through,” Capt. Tait tells TIME. “Nothing is off the table.”
The 12-day whirlwind of blind hope and anxiety has gripped the nation and much of the wider world. Hundreds of journalists rushed to the scene to broadcast the slightest developments. Hill tribe shamans trekked from nearby villages, sacrificing live animals to a mountain spirit in exchange for the boys’ safety. At their school, in the district of Mae Sai bordering Myanmar, classmates pray to see them again. When they were finally found by a pair of British divers setting guide ropes Monday, parents burst into tears.
Details began to emerge this week about how the team survived. Ekkapol, the coach, is said to be in the weakest condition after forgoing food for the kids. Citing a Thai SEAL who made contact with the team, local news site Khaosod reported that he rationed their food, collected clean water and advised them to lie still. A translator for a team of six Chinese divers on the mission told TIME that Ekkapol, who like most Thais is a devout Buddhist, is believed to have led them in long meditation.
Sriward, Night’s grandfather, says he will become a monk when the boy is safely home. And the Wild Boars?
“I’ll never let any of them near a cave again,” he says.

New world news from Time: A Youth Soccer Team Has Been Trapped in a Thai Cave for More Than a Week. Here’s Why It’s Taking So Long to Find Them
About a thousand Thai soldiers and civilians have been joined by technical experts from half a dozen countries in a desperate effort to rescue 12 young boys and their soccer coach trapped by floodwater in a cave in northern Thailand for more than a week.
The boys, all members of the Wild Boars soccer team between the ages of 11 and 16, and their assistant coach, 25-year-old Ekkapol Chantawong, are believed to have entered Tham Luang Cave after practice on June 23 for what was meant to be roughly a five-hour trek. Monsoon rains flooded several chambers and blocked the exit.
Rescuers tried to pump out the water so divers and medics could reach them, but the days that followed only brought more downpours. Authorities then began looking for alternative entries on the mountain above, but they found few viable options. More than a week later, time is running out.
The search for the missing boys and their coach has gripped the nation. Well wishers hold vigils in schools and temples across the country. Social media users created hashtags to draw attention to the story. Residents of the mostly rural Chiang Rai province have volunteered to cook, clean and support the boys’ families and rescue teams at a muddy encampment near the entrance to the cave complex.
They’ve held onto hope for ten days as Thai authorities try everything they can to make contact. Here’s why it’s taking so long to find the missing team, and what’s next in the extraordinary effort to save them.
Lillian Suwanrumpha—AFP/Getty ImagesLocal women attend a Buddhist prayer for the missing children at a school near Tham Luang cave at the Khun Nam Nang Non Forest Park in the Mae Sai district of Chiang Rai province on July 1, 2018.
A Complex System
The Tham Luang cave system is a sprawling complex beneath the Nang Non Mountain marking the border between Thailand and Myanmar to the north. Spanning roughly three miles as the crow flies, a system of narrow corridors winds sharply up and down, connecting larger chambers of limestone dripping with stalactites.
Several small rooms are located along the 1.8-mile stretch from the cave’s mouth to a T-intersection. To the right is a tunnel leading north. To the left, the main attraction: a vast amphitheater-like chamber known as Pattaya Beach, named after the popular tourist destination just south of the Thai capital Bangkok.
The trek to Pattaya is not particularly difficult, but it can take a few hours in dry conditions through narrow tunnels. Authorities hope that the missing team made it to the spacious cavern, where ground is high and likely to be above water. Small openings are expected to provide enough oxygen, while springs supply fresh water.

Besides some scattered belongings in the earlier chambers of the cave, there has been no direct sign of the boys and their coach. But rescuers believe huddling on the Pattaya shelf would be their best — perhaps only — chance of survival. Divers have not yet been able to reach the chamber due to extremely rough conditions, while climbers have yet to find any chimneys leading into it from above ground. Chiang Rai Governor Narongsak Osottanakorn said Sunday that a conventional exit through the mouth of the cave is the most likely scenario.
Thai Navy SEALs on the frontline of the rescue effort have established a command center in “chamber three,” an elevated room about a mile from the entrance and just under a mile from the junction, according to maps provided by Thai authorities. The station has been outfitted with lighting, medical equipment, a communications system and supplies such as food and oxygen, which is being deposited at 25-meter intervals throughout the inundated tunnels.
As of Monday morning, divers were closing in on Pattaya after setting out from command, passing the intersection and arriving within a mile of the target.
‘Bad Luck’
Thai authorities responded quickly to the crisis, but conditions were not in their favor. SEALs arrived late on the night of June 24, and first dove into the dark waters around 2 a.m. They kept diving, rotating three teams of six over the next 16 hours, but made little progress through opaque pools of rain, dirt and debris.
Rising water levels forced them to suspend exploration several times. Submersible pumps were brought to the scene to empty out the flooded tunnels, but new rains filled them right back up again. “We had bad luck,” Narongsak, the governor, told TIME on Friday. “The water came in faster than we could control it.”
By Wednesday, Thai authorities had asked for help. Three British diving experts rushed to the scene, as did a cave expert with extensive knowledge of Tham Luang. The U.S. Indo-Pacific command sent a survival specialist and a team of pararescuemen — an elite special operations unit trained for search, rescue and medical response in almost any environment. Military personnel from Australia arrived later in the week. China, Japan and Israel also sent specialists, believed to be private-sector civilians.
Upon their arrival Thursday, U.S. forces were met with pounding rains. Captain Jessica Tait, a public affairs officer for the U.S. Air Force, said Thai authorities were battling extremely unfavorable circumstances that got progressively worse. “This is a unique problem that’s bringing people together,” she said. “All of Thailand is here, bringing their hearts and their passions to solving this. Everyone is doing the best they can, given the situation.”

No Help From Above
Helicopters and drones hovered overhead searching for heat signatures and other signs of life, while police and soldiers rummaged through the jungle for chimneys that could provide an alternative entry point. Two appeared viable, according to Narongsak, and one provided access to a small room 40 meters below. It’s still unclear whether it connects to Pattaya; while extraction from above is unlikely, rescuers hope to at least make contact with the missing team to provide emergency medical treatment and food until floodwaters recede.
Industrial drills supplemented efforts to drain the water, but progress is slow. Responders are working day and night in a race against rains expected to resume this week.
Lillian Suwanrumph—AFP/Getty Images Thai soldiers and police gather in the mountains near the Tham Luang cave at the Khun Nam Nang Non Forest Park in Chiang Rai province on June 30, 2018 as the rescue operation continues for the children of a football team and their coach.
  At the Ready
Thirteen ambulances are standing by to transport survivors to Chiang Rai Region General Hospital, where an entire floor has been cleared to receive them. “We’ve been preparing since the beginning,” says Deputy Director Samroeng Seekaew, speaking to TIME on Monday. Doctors, nurses and mental health specialists are on call to treat trauma, organ failure and infectious disease in the event that anyone is found alive. “If we find them, we want their families to know that we are ready to care for them,” Samroeng said.
Paramedics, soldiers and volunteers successfully carried out an evacuation drill Saturday; if found alive, the biggest obstacle to their survival will be transporting them from Pattaya through still-flooded tunnels to the SEAL command center, then on to the mouth of cave — a difficult journey of several miles guided by rope and sheer determination. Despite the odds, responders remain committed to the mission and say they will not give up efforts until all 13 of the missing are located.
Addressing reporters Monday, Narongsak, the governor, says rescue teams will power on riding a wave of slow but encouraging progress. “I hope today will be another good day,” he said.

New world news from Time: ‘We Want to Find Them Today.’ Thai Authorities Say They’re Preparing to Rescue Missing Boys
Thai authorities say rescuers are inching closer to reaching 12 boys and their adult soccer coach who have been trapped inside a cave in northern Thailand with no contact for more than a week.
Narongsak Osottanakorn, the governor of Chiang Rai province where the Tham Luang Cave is located, told reporters Sunday that Thai Navy SEALs are closing in on a chamber where it is hoped the missing people have found refuge.
Divers have been trying to reach them for eight days since the boys, members of a soccer team between the ages of 11 and 16, and their 25-year-old assistant coach were trapped inside the complex on June 23 after sudden rains flooded their exit.
Narongsak said “a full plan is ready” for their evacuation and transfer to a nearby hospital once they are removed from the cave. Paramedics, soldiers and volunteers successfully carried out an evacuation drill Saturday and are standing by.

In a joint press conference with the governor, Navy Admiral Arpakorn Yukongkaew said his SEAL team is setting up a command center deep inside the cave and is preparing a plan to transport them through the flooded corridor. If found alive, their extraction will be complicated; they are likely to be malnourished and possibly injured.
“We still have to find a way to get them out,” he said, moving them from a main chamber to their command center inside the cave, then on to the entrance several kilometers away. “The important thing is that we want to find them today.”
The saga of the missing team has gripped the nation as rescue efforts snowballed from a small local team to a multinational emergency response. Forces from the U.S. and Australia have arrived to support Thai authorities, as well as technical experts from the U.K., Belgium and Israel.
The boys are believed to have entered the cave after practice with their assistant coach, 25-year-old Ekkapol Chantawong, on what was meant to be roughly a five-hour trek. But monsoon rains flooded several chambers, preventing their exit. Their bicycles and cleats were later discovered abandoned at the mouth of the cave.
Authorities brought in submersible pumps to drain the passage, but new rains kept filling the chambers back up. Rescuers then began looking for alternatives, scouring the hillside with drones and sheer manpower for fissures that could provide another entry to a large chamber called Pattaya where it is hoped they have found refuge.
A few days of clear skies offered some promise; by Saturday water levels were beginning to recede, and pumps began gushing out clear water. SEALs were able to dive further into the cavern than before, and a conventional exit through the mouth of the cave is being prioritized over efforts to descend through chimneys.
The divers have been rotating in and out of the tunnels day and night since last Sunday. But thick mud and debris made it impossible to see underwater, leaving them to feel around blindly for small openings in the cavern walls. Oxygen tanks have been set up in 25-meter intervals along the route to speed up their forward push.
Relatives of the missing children have been camping out at the site since their disappearance, sleeping on plastic chairs and a few cots while they wait for news about their sons. Buddhist monks arrive daily to lead them in prayer, while villagers make the trek to the cave’s muddy entrance with offerings.
Thai authorities are working around the clock in hopes the missing team is still alive, as the odds grow longer with each passing day. Captain Wuttichai, who oversees a team of Thai SEALs, says they will not abandon efforts until all thirteen of them are located.
“We’ll do our best,” he tells TIME, “from our hearts.”

New world news from Time: International Experts from the U.S. and U.K. Join the Search for 12 Missing Thai Boys and Their Coach
Experts from the U.S. and U.K. have joined the search to locate 12 missing teenagers and their soccer coach, as the effort to rescue the team trapped inside a cave in northern Thailand stretched into its fifth day.
British cave experts enlisted in the rescue effort Wednesday night, and an American military contingent is en route to Thailand’s northern Chiang Rai province, where diving operations have been repeatedly halted by rising floodwaters, the Associated Press reports.
Three British cave diving experts, named as Robert Charlie Harper, John Volamthen and Richard William Stanton, arrived in Chiang Rai Wednesday evening, according to Thailand’s The Nation. The U.S. military’s Indo-Pacific Command has also *dispatched* a 30-strong search-and-rescue team, who were on the ground to assist Thai units Thursday morning, according to AP
Rescue operations led by Thai Navy SEALS were impeded Wednesday by swirling, muddy water, which at times rose by as much as 15 cm (6 in) per hour and prevented divers from navigating submerged chambers in the sprawling cave complex.
“We tried to pump the water (out of the chamber) but the water keeps rising,” said Chiang Rai Gov. Narongsak Osatanakorn, according to AP. “We need to pump the water faster.”
Efforts Tuesday and Wednesday to locate surface shafts that would allow rescuers to access deeper sections of the cave were also unsuccessful.
Lillian Suwanrumpha—AFP/Getty ImagesThree British cave-divers, Richard William Stanton (2nd-L), Robert Charles Harper (3rd-L) and John Volanthen (R) near the Tham Luang cave in Chiang Rai on June 27, 2018.
The 12 members of the Moo Paa (Wild Boar) Academy football club, aged 11-15, and their 25-year-old coach are thought to have become trapped after entering the Tham Luang Nang Non cave on Saturday. Authorities hope they are taking refuge in a dry chamber on higher ground inside the cave. Earlier forays this week turned up shoes, bags, and hand- and foot-prints.
Over 1,000 Thai military personnel are now engaged in the rescue operation, according to The Nation. On Wednesday, Thai teams constructed dams in an effort to prevent more rainwater from flowing into the cave.
Families and supporters of the missing boys, who gathered outside the cave entrance this week, also continued their vigil Thursday, holding prayer sessions and lighting incense sticks.

New world news from Time: Body Language Experts Reveal What Trump and Kim’s Behavior Says About the Singapore Summit
President Donald Trump strolled in from the right, North Korea’s Kim Jong Un from the left. With a 13-second handshake and a pat on Kim’s arm, the two leaders set the stage for an unprecedented encounter between the sitting U.S. president and the ruler of the world’s most isolated regime.
While their talks tackle the serious aims of ending seven decades of hostilities and denuclearizing the Korean peninsula, optics ruled the show. From the red carpets they strode in on, to who arrived first, Trump and Kim’s meeting at a luxury resort on Singapore’s Sentosa Island was a carefully choreographed affair.
Experts warn that all the pageantry risks normalizing the North Korean regime, even as Pyongyang’s commitment to fully dismantling its hard-won nuclear arsenal remains an open question. Trump insists the summit is about more than just the decade’s best photo opportunity. Ahead of the meeting, he claimed he would be able to determine within a minute of greeting his North Korean counterpart whether serious discussions about peace were on the table.
So as the highly anticipated summit converged with handclasps, grins and a thumbs-up, TIME asked body language experts to decode the spectacle by analyzing nonverbal clues behind the first one-on-one meeting between the two veteran showmen.
Kim arrived first
Trump left his hotel, the Shangri-La, first. But Kim arrived at the opulent Capella Hotel seven minutes before him. Journalists noted the respect this indicated on Kim’s part.
Good color from the foreign pool reporter: According Korean media, Kim arrived at the summit venue 7 minutes earlier than Mr. Trump to show respect. It’s cultural, The young one should arrive earlier than the elder one. #TrumpKimSummit
— Elise Hu (@elisewho) June 12, 2018
The height and age advantage
At a summit where both men sought to play the alpha role, the optics were inherently in Trump’s favor. The president holds both an eight-inch height and 39-year age advantage over Kim.
Towering over his North Korean counterpart confers Trump an immediate, visual upper-hand, according to Traci Brown, a body language expert and author of How to Detect Lies, Fraud and Identity Theft.
“It makes ALL the difference in the image,” she wrote by email. “A big guy from a big, rich country trying to get a little guy from a poor country to do what he wants” is a visual easily conveyed by height discrepancy.
Saul Loeb—AFP/Getty Images North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Un shakes hands with President Donald Trump at the start of their historic U.S.-North Korea summit, at the Capella Hotel on Sentosa island in Singapore on June 12, 2018.
Setting the tone
“The first four seconds is when rapport is developed and the fact that there was immediate rapport established shows that the meeting has a great chance for success,” says Lillian Glass, a California-based communication and psychology expert.
The fact that Trump approached Kim with an extended arm reveals a receptiveness and genuine bonhomie, she added.
The handshakes
With the handshake serving as the most important symbolic role at the summit, as well as a way to establish who was in control from the outset, experts paid particularly close attention to Trump and Kim’s clasps.
Trump initiated all three handshakes exchanged so far, even though he’s called shaking hands a “barbaric” way to greet someone. Trump’s grip and grins with Kim also notably steered cleared of the death grip yanks he has previously exercised on world leaders, including Japan’s Shinzo Abe and France’s Emmanuel Macron.
“Trump went out of his way to play host. That’s a nice way of showing control over Kim,” says Brown.
A lot of touching
As with previous encounters with world leaders, Trump seemingly could not stop touching his counterpart.
“Trump touched Kim six times before they went into the [private] meeting room,” Brown says.
All this physical interaction may have been a way to signal affection.
“Trump is the kind of guy that wears his emotions on his sleeves. If he likes you he lets you know it physically,” she says.
By contrast, Kim appeared to reciprocate the physical interaction just once, but Glass emphasized it signaled an important “mirroring” of Trump’s behavior.
“When someone mirrors you it means they like you and are open to you,” she says.
Jonathan Ernst—ReutersPresident Donald Trump sits next to North Korea’s Kim Jong Un before their meeting in Singapore on June 12, 2018.
What body language portends about the outcome
Glass adds that when the two sat down to answer questions from reporters before their meeting, their feet were pointed toward each other, they both leaned in and wore receptive smiles. They also shared another handshake.
“From what I observed between the two body language-wise I strongly believe that there is a great chance of success, which is defined as open communication and establishing world peace as Kim is welcomed into the world,” says Glass.
