i have been watching the soap opera general hospital intermittently for the last couple years & although i can only identify maybe one-third of the characters currently on the show, i have to say that it's weirdly compelling. soap operas are great? approximately a quarter of the show is composed of extremely earnest almost-PSAs about things like alzheimer's and mental illness and bullying, and the rest of it is goofy nonsense. someone's brain got downloaded on a flash drive! there's a serial killer who jumped into niagara falls and cut off his own hand only to kill again! the sexy character is pretending not to date his longterm partner because she is busy infiltrating a cult! honestly it is a wild ride and everyone on it is so committed

#i know people who watch it were already getting something out of it & i don't mean to condescend #there is something kind of comic booky about the soap opera though which i am really enjoying #in part because sometimes plot points need to be stretched out they really spend time on emotional conversations & developments #plus the continuity is just. wacky as hell. these two dudes who don't look the same are Identical Twins who Share Memories #like??? okay??? that character's defining feature is his leather jacket + soulful glower combo so whatever i guess #also apparently john sheppard retired from atlantis to be therapist to mob bosses' wives #ALSO also stephen a. smith known for his ridiculous basketball takes has guest starred a couple times. why not i guess??#the thing that actually surprised me is the relatively progressive politics of general hospital #the biggest recurring event is an AIDS fundraiser & they have a trans woman character played by a trans woman & they treat her well #i gather that it is something of an outlier in this regard. anyway. gh is hilarious #the actors usually only get like one take + fast turnaround on scripts so i think they're doing a good job considering
