shipping can coexist with character analysis up until shippers start misusing literary terms to explain why their ship is better
#rarely do i run into fandom ppl using the term narrative foils correctly honestly.#like yeah. you COULD find direct opposing traits within these 2 characters if you tried. but that's true about any pair of characters lbr#esp when a story has a strong theme so many of its characters would have key traits related to it in some way.#it's specifically this term being misused that's my pet peeve bc of how common it is to see it. well. misused#and bc i think i have a generallyyyyyy good grasp on it? so it's easy to notice when someone is using it just to sound smart#or bc they don't understand what it is mean bc i swear fandom culture made ppl think it means literally any 2 characters that have matching-#- yet opposing traits. regardless of what their role in the story is or what these traits are and how defining they are#usual disclaimer of 'this doesn't actually matter but i'm bitter so i wanna let it out'#and 'i am a shipper and a fandom person so this isn't coming out of a place of judgment abt that' and 'do whatever you want forever'
