I spend a stupid amount of time watching Snapchat videos, and there’s this one I saw of this girl on tiktok with hair down to her knees or some shit (which, as someone who’s never had hair longer than like boob length, is genuinely terrifying. Like the amount of money she must spend on shampoo/conditioner/other hair products must be insane).
But anyways, the clickbaity title thing for the video is like ‘her hair won’t stop growing 😱’. Which is like no shit Sherlock. Most people’s hair ‘won’t stop growing’. That’s how hair fucking works. You think hairdressers exist just for shits and giggles?
#it’s been a couple weeks since I saw that video and I still think about it almost daily#which probably means their borderline outrage marketing strategy worked but atill#nonsims#also a very high amount of Snapchat videos are just straight up ripped from tiktok without crediting the creator which is very 🤨🤨🤨#like usually the video is cropped before the creators name comes up at the end of the tiktok

The minecraft stan community just bullied a girl to suicide.
this might read weird because i wrote it in word but i don’t know if im going to be able to record it so have this transcript, it’s got everything in it:
Over the years there’s been some pretty horrific occasions of certain fandoms going too far with their enjoyment of certain media and brash defensiveness of particular shows, actors or characters -I’m sure anyone’s who’s been on the internet long enough has at some point stumbled across the term “shipping wars”. Some of the worst examples are often traced back to certain fandoms that have either since of previously developed a reputation for toxicity – think of steven universe and the multitude of absolutely insane discourse escalation that happened back when that show was big: a tumblr user by the name of zamii070 being harassed and encouraged to commit suicide over drawing a plus size character skinnier than she appears in the show, as well as other examples that received less coverage like that time a grown-ass man running a fan channel started beef with a make-a-wish kid over him getting early access to information on what the writers were planning for the story, one of the writers getting harassed off twitter by fans over her choice to explore the relationship between a certain pairing of characters over another, and another case I witnessed personally of a teenager being harassed en masse on Instagram and called a paedophile for wanting to see the protagonist of the show kiss his girlfriend.
Putting that diffuse deep dive aside, incidents like this have been cropping up in online fandom spaces for well over a decade now, and with the mass exodus from irl to twitter prompted by the pandemic, the issue only seems to be getting worse. For the last few years, especially on sites like twitter (although thankfully with the end of covid usage does seem to be dying down a bit) you’ve probably seen the word “stan” thrown about a lot to describe those mega fans overly invested in their communities, most notably K-Pop and the Minecraft and wider video game communities. If you’re above the age of fucking zoomer, you’re probably familiar with the origin of the term in the song “stan” by Eminem as a descriptor of a crazed fan who’s obsession leads him to do… unsavoury things. In more recent times, the term’s gone through somewhat of a reclamation event and the most dedicated of fans of any given thing have taken it on as a badge of honour to show that they are the most devoted to whatever master it is they serve. And this kind of behaviour has been encouraged and dare I say stoked by certain figures in the community- most notably Dream, arguably the biggest content creator in the MCYT community for the last 2 years. Although it should be noted that due to his size his encouragement of stans did not exactly go unnoticed and some of his comments here made up one of his MANY cancelling events. But that’s a video for another day.I’m doing all this setup to essentially to make the point that people who participate in fandoms can be really intense. And the combination of the added focus on intersectional leftist progressive politics online with a whole generation of teenagers being forced online by lockdowns created the unholy lovechild that is the twitter Minecraft (or mcyt – standing for Minecraft youtube) community.
More hyper vigilant and self-censorious than pretty much any fandom that had come before – the fans were some of the most dedicated ever witnessed for any piece of media that the internet’s ever enjoyed. For almost 3 years there was a new major cancelling event coming out of this fandom every couple of days. And it wasn’t even limited to the creators the way some of the internet’s most infamous drama has been (think beauty community or onision). Like, you’d have the usual tweet mining to find something deemed inappropriate that some major streamer said 10 years ago, but people were doing it to people who were just like big names in the fanbase. You’d have fan accounts with upwards of 10 or 20k followers doing callouts on each other for posts they liked or people they followed -it was chaos. A lot of this came to a head in the summer of 2021 when the mob conscious of the twitter fandom decided their next target would be notable youtube streamer Technoblade. It’s unclear whether the mass targeting of this one specific creator began in part due to his rivalry with dream and thus as a result of the dream stans wanting an excuse to hate him publicly while making themselves seem virtuous in the process, the mob may have just wanted a new witch to hunt- but I’m certainly not discounting it as a factor. Either way, old clips resurfaced to be taken out of context and weaponised and the onslaught eventually led to Technoblade leaving twitter. Months later, after a period of relative radio silence on all platforms, techno returned with the announcement that he had been diagnosed with sarcoma, a form of cancer.
Needless to say, the news was all over twitter as soon as it broke, and a lot of the accounts most vocal in their dislike of techno quickly shut up and ran away with their tails between their legs. Following a brief return to content in the intervening months largely focussed on charity work raising money for research into his illness, Techno sadly passed away in June of 2022, with his father breaking the news online. If you’re thinking the name technoblade was familiar, this is probably where you heard it- his death made international news and almost every creator online whether they knew him or not made a public statement.
Following his death, techno’s social media was taken over by his father, who took the time to answer fan questions and share memories of his son. One message which stuck out to a lot of people within the fandom was technodad’s claim that techno’s cancer diagnosis had affected him less than the harassment he received around the same time. Remember how I said the techno antis (I realise I haven’t explained that term but just think of it as the polar opposite to a stan) mostly disappeared when his diagnosis came out? Well a few of the bigger accounts went silent for a short period and then attempted to slither back into techno’s fandom like nothing had every happened. I’m almost proud to say that the fandom at large did not forget and those responsible are routinely reminded that they were worse than literal cancer. You would think that this devastating experience would have taught the fandom at large the dangers and negative effects of jumping on a hate bandwagon for a certain figure at short (read: no) notice. You would think. The video up until this point has mostly been setup and background information, and that’s a lot to do with me putting off talking about the main topic, because frankly it’s just upsetting.
An offshoot of the main Minecraft youtube fandom is that for indie rock group lovejoy, led by frontman Wilbur soot. It’s important to note that while the core fandom for lovejoy is largely separate from the wider Minecraft community, on twitter the whole Minecraft community knows about lovejoy due to wilbur’s history and continued activity as a Minecraft streamer.
With lovejoy’s rise in popularity came a rise in their own dedicated fan accounts, one of which was tatterwinged, run by an individual known as alice. The account got big from being one of the most active members of the community, from writing fan fiction based on the characters Wilbur and his friends would play during their streams to posting gig photography taken at their first public shows. During November of 2022 it was revealed that alice was running a private set of secret second accounts which contained not safe for work content pertaining to the same streamers and characters featured in her main blog, in the form of fanfiction and discussion. At this point in time alice’s main account was followed by quite a few big content creators, including lovejoy members themselves, so something like this coming out made a big splash. Alice was sent a wave of death threats and practically the whole fandom was coming out of the woodwork to call her some variation of a pedo and a freak, despite alice being a minor herself at the time. There were also calls for and direct threats of violence thrown at her. Alice never denied any of the claims levied at her but made a thread explaining essentially what had happened from her perspective and locked her account to stave off further harassment. At this time some dms between alice and a former friend were also leaked.
The situation had mostly cycled out of people’s view as the “current thing” when a series of tweets appeared on the tatterwinged account implying that alice had intensions to end her life, followed by radio silence. Another account belonging to a real life friend of alice started posting with the aim of getting the message out that alice had gone missing and was not responding to messages, including providing links to missing person reports from local websites.
You’d think seeing the escalation would make people reconsider whether the harassment campaign levied against a teenage girl for privately writing uncomfortable stories about real people was proportional to the crime but apparently not. For the next month we didn’t really hear much more about what was going on with alice. Her friend took over the tatterwinged account and a lot of tweets were deleted ( a lot of what you see in this video was archived prior to deletion), but beyond calls for her safe return from a few voices there was nothing
As of the time I’m writing this, it was announced on the 29th of December that alice had been found dead on the 27th, presumably by her own action. And people are still going after her. I just don’t have words anymore. The fact that a person can get to the point where they see the news that a teenage girl killed herself over what is essentially 2022’s answer to cyberbullying and their first response is to say that she DESERVED IT and get angry that people are calling out the people who drove her to it is just…
#i'll have to put the images in a reblog or smth but this whole situation is making me very angry#alice tatterwinged

Thumbnail Blaster Review and Bonus
Welcome to my Thumbnail Blaster Review and Demo YouTube first became popular because an online platform for musicians to generate the name for themselves and obtaining more views was, and still will be, the ultimate goal intended for online video media content creators. In older days, people would use misleading title, tags, and thumbnails to a great extent to get more views and now nights Google and yahoo has won typically the war on spam by adding brand-new voice and image reputation technology to find an idea involving what exactly a video is approximately when compared with what the content material creator says in the title, tags, and even outline. This helps to give individuals with a much greater customer experience when looking a little something up on YouTube. Online video media content creators are today up against having to in fact make quality movies that people will take pleasure in and to get more views, it should be seen by enough visitors to find the appropriate customer who will upload this on his internet site, or at least share the idea on Facebook. Rightfully therefore, Google's top main concern can be user experience over this content provider's view matter, however some authorities say the new changes in order to often the algorithm will trigger old video tutorials, that persons have already seen, get more attention than new versions and could actually produce it complicated for the user to find fresh new content in search outcomes to get popular search terms. So, how could a video content creator in 2011 fights impotence the latest changes to be able to often the YouTube Algorithm? Produce Movies Like Never Before Create a Following Comment Your own personal Way for the Top Off of Site Seo Know This Difference Involving Junk mail And even Optimization Create Video tutorials Much like Never Prior to With YouTube's 92 Billion web site ideas a month together with soaring, a video clip has to be one of a kind for it to have popularity. Planning a movie and server scripting are now a must along having display quality. By comparing the videos with millions connected with views into the lesser regarding the tribes, you will observe the fact that high definition and exceptional lighting are two popular traits shared by this best viewed videos. This specific doesn't lead to you have got to get an pricey HD camera to get more views. Youtube . com offers a set of formatting tags, again to aid provide a a great deal better customer experience. yt: crop=16: in search of yt: stretch=16: 9 yt: quality=high Use these types of labels to eliminate window boxing and poor video quality if you do not have access to HIGH-DEFINITION equipment. Pay attention to be able to your video's thumbnail choices careful not to be flagged for spam. "OMG" deals with are well-known thumbnail selections just so long as it can be what will be within the video. The. 25. four plus. 75 points in your online video media used in order to be what determined your own thumbnail selections when adding. With so much mistreatment, Google came up having the bright strategy for you to use the three best movies from your online video and semi-randomly picking a point through the three period of time points. Audio and picture root report names are also added into the picture to better give right thumbnail selections. Spammers can no longer just add a short graphic flash at the particular halfway level of their very own videos to get a great deal more opinions. Build a Pursuing As with Twitter, Forums, and MySpace, Facebook is normally also a social networking system. Being mixed up in community is definitely a must for fresh plus old video content material creators looking to come to be popular on YouTube. Build your channel around a exclusive market that has a new mid-sized level of competitors. Visit similar channels and even comment on their video clips together with sincere compliments or maybe questions. Treat your subscriber's movies the same approach so you are not really to be a dormant range in their ongoing give. The old SUB4SUB approach is still being used and has grown straight into its own community or perhaps niche. If your visitors will be teenagers, go regarding it! Be careful definitely not to be called out to be a spammer because this idea of, "You subscribe to me and I actually may subscribe to you" is often frowned upon by people of a professional background. YouTube picks upward on heavily repeated responses and even auto-marks them as junk mail so just apply a SUB4SUB profile picture and be participating in the SUB4SUB channels inside Vimeo community. Set aside some sort of day to work on building some sort of following about other social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, in addition to Facebook or myspace. This stretches your own personal right away to those who have no a good channel on Dailymotion which in turn surprisingly enough tends to make up for a lot of the home page's 92 billion readers each month. Comment Your Way For the Top Uploading a good video twice a week and commenting on the readers video clips and programmes often the working day before is a superb tip of thumb. Being consistent from doing so is definitely the work section of the whole entire issue. However, by doing this you brand yourself using your readers and build a awareness among them which starts the particular snowball effect associated with even more landscapes and even subscribers when they think and share your movies. This is the reason you want for you to stay within your specific niche market. When leaving comments, become sincere about what an individual sort. Never just point out 2 words and abandon. This particular totally defeats the particular purpose which is not necessarily heading to make people need to know who also left said brief review. Leave comments people need on their videos and share this comment on Facebook and Facebook to help make it show up as a "linked comment" on top of often the brief review feed. Each moment a good fans from Facebook or myspace or Twits clicks in this, the comment is certainly moved back in the top of the comment nourish. Be creative in your current comments and it can get thumbed upwards also gaining more and even more interest towards the author of mentioned comment. Often the ultimate goal here is to compliment the online video user's work which companies your own personal username and station so that when your videos show up in their subscription give food to, it will probably be hard to resist. Off Web-site Optimization The following is more "work" of which has to be done in order to move your videos to typically the top of search success. When people are searching for a person, it is best to be able to be easy to find. Just making use of a lot of tag words individuals are searching for just isn't going to trim this cake. Google wants to find out back links on well-liked sites leading to your video to compliment your states of everything you have since your title. When a well-liked site has a connect to your video using the particular terms in your subject, it gives PUBLIC RELATIONS points for that phrase following a certain amount of time. However, in case you go all-around posting unrelated hyperlinks, chances are the idea will end up being taken out and wouldn't count like a new back web page link anyway with the time aspect threshold. Upload your online video to other websites relevant to your niche along with participate in forum talks and post your online video like some sort of hyperlink any time it is relevant to the particular discussion. You have in order to keeping it related and that has to add value to the debate. If your links get taken off, the idea will have a change effect on your search results positioning so always be sure and respect the terms and conditions connected with forums that allow back links to videos and internet sites. Know The Variation Between Spam And Search engine optimization The fine line involving spam and optimization is crucial to breaking through typically the mass amounts of video lessons on YouTube if folks interested in your product will likely even know this is present. In case you are Fred, and your personal route (Lucas) says your age is 33, it is highly not likely you will obtain called out for lying about your age when you created your. If you are like many various other Facebook celebrities and your current information abounds with advertising your own personal social networks in addition to T-shirt sales instead of conveying the video, you may not get named out there either. However, chances are you are usually certainly not a Dailymotion celeb and if you adhere to suit, it is just a new matter of time before you are suspended via the site. When selecting a title for your video, you should be creative and employ words and phrases that are intending to get results by search engines at the similar time. Decide on a search expression you wish to be found simply by (that best details the video) and use the idea in your title. Yahoo and google like wide variety so give a few support words to your phrase. For example: Goal phrase: Remote Control Yard Mower A good title will be: Remote Control Grass Mower vs. Steep Hillsides Write a brief information using the target phrase only once towards top yet not really as the first sentence. Be organic and discuss to your viewers. Typically the tags for the online video media should be specific to your own personal target saying with plus without quotations. To illustrate: "remote control yard mower" out of the way control grass mower. Following a thirty days of positive viewers allergic reactions, you will notice your online video media climbing often the charts. With thumbnail blaster review to competitive key phrases, your movie has for you to generate lots of beneficial viewer reaction before it is going to show up on leading of listings and at some point on Google as some sort of online video result. Patients, difficult work, and consistency can be a must. You should publish videos on a regular basis most with a little bit different targeted phrases related to your niche market. It is a lot regarding work. Nevertheless , when a person get your first video clip up to a thousand views, you will be hooked about YouTube, wearing Dailymotion Tshirts, and even making courses to help others.

Mortal Kombat and Bloodsport: The Strange Connection That Changed Gaming
https://ift.tt/3vd5lXB
As we eagerly anticipate the release of the latest Mortal Kombat movie, many find themselves looking back on Mortal Kombat’s 1995 big-screen debut. While that film has its charms and its fans (myself included), the movie has rightfully been criticized over the years for lacking many of the best qualities of the game as well as many of the best elements of the martial arts movies that clearly inspired it.
Of course, the relationship between Mortal Kombat and martial arts films has always been close. Not only did the game utilize a then-revolutionary form of motion capturing that gave it a standout cinematic look, but many aspects of the title were practically taken directly from some of the best and biggest martial arts movies of that era.
As the years go on, though, it becomes more and more clear that no martial arts movie impacted the development of Mortal Kombat more than Bloodsport. Maybe you’ve heard that MK was inspired by that beloved movie, but a deeper look at the relationship between Bloodsport and Mortal Kombat reveals the many ways both big and small that the two would go on to change gaming forever.
Bloodsport: The Crown Jewel of Absurd ‘80s Martial Arts Movies
While the 1970s is rightfully remembered as the decade when America became obsessed with martial arts (due in no small part to the influence of Bruce Lee’s legendary films), it really wasn’t until the 1980s that you saw major and minor studios compete to see who could produce the biggest martial arts blockbuster.
Of course, many of the martial arts movies of that decade were different from what came before. They had bigger budgets, were usually more violent, and, maybe most importantly, they generally catered more to Western audiences. Yes, the ‘80s is the decade that Jackie Chan and other Asian martial artists did some of their best work, but as more and more Western studios got in on the action, we saw the rise of a new kind of martial arts movie that more closely resembled the over-the-top violent action films popularized by Arnold Schwarzenegger.
That also meant the rise of a new kind of martial arts star who was typically either from America or played American characters in what we can now see was an effort to capitalize on the idea of American exceptionalism that was especially popular during the Reagan era. If you’re looking for some notable examples of that trend, I’d suggest checking out Best of the Best, Above the Law, and, naturally, American Ninja.
In many ways, though, 1988’s Bloodsport is the pinnacle of that time in martial arts movies.
Bloodsport co-writer Sheldon Lettich says he came up with the idea for the film while talking to a martial artist named Frank Dux. Among other things, Dux claimed to be a former undercover CIA operative who once participated in an underground martial arts tournament known as “Kumite” in order to take down the criminal organization that ran it. Dux also claimed he was the first American to ever win the tournament.
To be frank, Dux was full of shit and, despite the fact that Bloodsport bills itself as a story inspired by true events, Lettich knew it. Still, the idea of an American martial artist winning a global underground tournament featuring the world’s greatest fighters was too good to pass up.
Indeed, the absurdity of that premise is a big part of what makes the whole thing work. While Dux’s story was almost certainly “inspired” by the plot of Enter the Dragon, Bloodsport wisely veers away from that classic in ways that take advantage of the best (or at least most loveable) elements of that era.
The smoke-filled back room that hosts many of Bloodsport‘s key fights is far removed from the tropical paradise of Enter the Dragon, but it captures that vibe of an ‘80s pro wrestling arena where the stale air is punctured by the screams of a bloodthirsty crowd. Whereas many early martial arts movies were designed to showcase the speed of their leads, the deliberate, slower strikes in Bloodsport perfectly compliment the absurd sound effects they resulted in which suggested that every punch was breaking bones. It’s a ridiculous idea tempered by a surprising amount of raw violence. In a nutshell, it’s a snapshot of what made so many great ‘80s action movies work.
What really made Bloodsport special, though, was the work of Jean-Claude Van Damme. It’s hard to call the young Van Damme’s performance “good” in any traditional sense of the word, but considering that he was cast in the role to be a good looking young martial artist with charisma to burn, it’s also hard to say he didn’t do exactly what he was asked to and then some.
More important than JCVD’s movie-star looks were his martial arts abilities. I don’t know how Van Damme’s real-life martial arts experience stacked up against the best competitors of that era, but what I can tell you is that Van Damme came across as the real deal at a time when many studios were still casting the biggest bodies and teaching them to be action stars later. By comparison, Van Damme was lean, flexible, and not only capable of selling us on the idea that he could kick ass but genuinely also capable of kicking many asses.
Bloodsport was a box office success that would certainly go on to become a genre cult classic, but its most lasting impact has to be the way it introduced so many of us to Jean-Claude Van Damme. Indeed, the attention the movie brought to Van Damme was about to also make waves in the video game industry.
Midway to Hollywood: “Bring Me Jean-Claude Van Damme!”
Much like the tales of Frank Dux, the stories of the early days of Mortal Kombat’s development are sometimes twisted by legend. However, nearly all versions of the story come back to Jean-Claude Van Damme in one way or another.
Mortal Kombat‘s origins can be traced back to co-creators John Tobias and Ed Boon’s desire to make a fighting game featuring ninjas that would also allow them to utilize the kind of large character designs they emphasized in previous works.
Unfortunately, the initial pitch for that project was rejected by Midway for the simple reason that there seemed to be some doubt regarding the commercial viability of an arcade fighting game. Remember that this was all done before Street Fighter 2 really took over arcades, cemented itself as a game-changer, and inspired studios everywhere to start go all-in on the genre.
Instead, Midway decided to pursue an action game starring Jean-Claude Van Damme. The details of this part of the story sometimes get fuzzy, but it seems they specifically hoped to develop a game based on Van Damme’s Universal Soldier film. At the very least, the idea of adapting the mega star’s latest movie into a game must have seemed like a much more surefire hit than an unlicensed fighting title.
Recognizing an opportunity, Tobias and the rest of the four-person team that would go on to make Mortal Kombat decided to see if they could get Van Damme interested in the idea of starring in their martial arts game. Boon recalls that they even went so far as to send Van Damme a concept demo for that project by capturing a still of the actor from Bloodsport, cropping out the background, and replacing it with their own assets. There have even been reports that they were prepared to name their game Van Damme as the ultimate showcase of the star.
The idea fell through, and there seem to be some contradictory reports regarding exactly what happened. Boon once said that he’d heard Van Damme already had a deal in place with Sega that would conflict with their offer, but, as Boon notes, Sega clearly never released that game. If such a deal ever was in place, it seems nothing ever came from it. It’s also been said that Van Damme was too busy to model for the game’s digitized animations or was otherwise simply uninterested.
The entire Van Damme/Midway deal ending up falling apart, but there was a silver lining. Now given the time to properly recognize that the fighting genre was blowing up in arcades, Midway told Tobias, Boon, and the rest of the team to go ahead and work on their martial arts game, Van Damme be damned.
While Van Damme was technically out of the picture, the team at Midway were hardly ready to give up entirely on their idea of a fighting game inspired by Bloodsport

Mortal Kombat Timeline: Story Explained
By Gavin Jasper
Mortal Kombat: A Bloodsport by Any Other Name
Mortal Kombat went by a lot of names in its earliest days (the most popular candidate in the early days was reportedly “Kumite“), but one thing that remained the same throughout much of the project’s development was the commitment to making it the anti-Street Fighter. Or, as Ed Boon once put it, to make it the “MTV version of Street Fighter.”
The logic was hard to argue against. If Street Fighter 2 was the best at what it did, then this game should be the exact opposite of it in every single way possible
What’s impressive are the ways the small MK team distinguished their project. They used digitized captures of actors, which is particularly impressive when you consider that they weren’t even working with green screens. They just filmed some actors (mostly people they knew with martial arts experience) performing moves against a concrete wall and then manually removed the real-life backgrounds. It wasn’t too far removed from the techniques they used to construct a demo of their idea for Jean-Claude Van Damme
Of course, you can’t talk about MK without eventually talking about the blood. The game’s use of gore was certainly intended to catch people’s attention, which it absolutely did. While the MK team didn’t quite anticipate how the combination of digitized actors and extreme gore would put MK at the center of an emerging debate about video game violence, they rightfully predicted that the game’s violence was one of those things that people would force people to stop and look when they walked by and saw the game in action.
What’s really funny, though, is how those two qualities helped MK capture the feel of Bloodsport in ways that seemed both intentional and perhaps happily accidental. Yes, MK’s origins prove that it was clearly inspired by Bloodsport, but the ways in which MK most meaningfully mimics Bloodsport often aren’t talked about enough.
In Bloodsport and MK, you have this martial arts adventure that feels both wonderfully dingy and strangely fantastical. Just as Bloodsport told the unbelievable story of a global tournament featuring larger than life participants but tempered it with visceral combat the likes of which no human could survive, MK combined sorcery and mythological creatures with decapitations and punishing uppercuts in a way that shouldn’t have worked but proved to be too enjoyable to at least not be fascinated with.
Even the “awkward” animations you sometimes have to suffer through as a result of MK‘s motion capture process captured the spirit of Bloodsport and the ways that it replaced the smooth moves of someone like Bruce Lee with a more impactful MMA-esque style complimented by moments of absurd athleticism. It’s almost certainly also no coincidence that the average MK combatant’s most athletic move was a sweep kick. After all, a famous Hollywood legend says JCVD was offered the Bloodsport role after showing off his kicks to a producer.
Of course, when it comes to any discussion about MK and Bloodsport’s relationship, we certainly don’t have to rely on possible coincidences and speculation. Not only was an early version of MK literally ripped from Bloodsport, but as it turns out, JCVD did end up appearing in the game…
Johnny Cage: Jean-Claude Van Darn
If you step back and look at it, Mortal Kombat is basically the Super Smash Bros. for action stars of the ‘70s and ‘80s. Kano was a callback to The Terminator, Sonya Blade was seemingly based on the eternally underrated Cynthia Rothrock, Raiden was clearly inspired by Big Trouble in Little China (as was Shang Tsung), and Liu Kang was almost certainly a Bruce Lee substitute.
Then you have Johnny Cage. As a cocky movie star whose martial arts skills are largely based on his flexibility, it’s always been easy enough to suggest that Johnny Cage is a non-licensed nod to Jean-Claude Van Damme. Actually, many think that Johnny Cage is a bit of a mean-spirited parody of JCVD meant to mock him for turning the game down.
The truth is a little more complicated than that. Johnny Cage actually started as a character named Michael Grimm who was described as the “current box office champion and star of such movies as Dragon’s Fist, Dragon’s Fist II, and the award-winning Sudden Violence.” While his character model was reportedly also influenced by Iron Fist’s Daniel Rand, it seems that he was initially meant as a kind of broad substitute for the Western martial arts stars that took over the scene in the 1980s.
But yes, Johnny Cage is absolutely meant to be a parody of JCVD. I suppose where people lose the thread a bit is in the insinuation that he’s a jab at the star rather than an homage. While MK’s developers have said that Johnny Cage’s iconic “splits into a low blow” was absolutely a way to poke fun at JCVD and a scene from Bloodsport, it feels a little disingenuous to suggest the team was feeling bitter about not being able to put JCVD in their game and wanted to suggest that he was this star that was somehow too good for them.
What’s kind of funny, though, is that the rise, fall, and rise of Johnny Cage isn’t too dissimilar from what happened to JCVD. Van Damme was riding high in the early ‘90s on the back of films like Bloodsport, but a series of flops and some personal problems put his career in jeopardy later on. Similarly, Johnny Cage debuted as the prototypical Hollywood star but would fall from grace in the years that followed. He wasn’t even featured in Mortal Kombat 3 for the simple reason that he was the least selected character in MK 2.
Yet, over time, many people came to appreciate characters like Johnny Cage and actors like JCVD largely because they represented this golden age of absurd martial arts movies that weren’t always great (and were certainly usually a little problematic) but were ridiculous in a way that became much easier to love when weighed against increasingly self-serious genre works.
In his own way, Johnny Cage not only represents JCVD but the magic of a movie like Bloodsport and how such a silly little film could change everything because of (and not in spite of) its ridiculousness.
There’s another world in which JCVD became the digitized star of what would become Mortal Kombat, but due to a series of incredible circumstances, we don’t just need to project that reality on Johnny Cage to envision what that game might have looked like.
Bloodsport: The First Great Video Game Movie?
While it’s certainly funny enough that Jean-Claude Van Damme would go on to star in the Street Fighter movie after turning down what would become the first Mortal Kombat game, the cherry on the top of that story has to be the release of 1995’s Street Fighter: The Movie (the game).
That adaptation of the Street Fighter film bizarrely abandoned the design style of the Street Fighter games the movie was based on and was instead modeled after Mortal Kombat in an attempt to give Capcom a fighting game that could more directly compete with Midway’s runaway hit series. It failed spectacularly, but it did feature a digitized version of Guile as portrayed by JCVD in the Street Fighter movie. Van Damme even lent his moves for the game’s motion capture process.
Roughly four years after passing up the opportunity to star in Mortal Kombat (or Van Damme, as it would have likely been known), Van Damme ends up starring in a Mortal Kombat rip-off carrying the Street Fighter name. Call it a missed opportunity if you want, but to me, the bigger takeaway is that Van Damme may have missed the chance to recognize that he, Bloodsport, and Mortal Kombat were destined to be together long before the development of MK ever started.
See, there’s a scene in Bloodsport where Frank Dux and his new friend Ray play the 1984 arcade game Karate Champ. As one of the first successful arcade fighting games featuring multiplayer, Karate Champ would later be recognized as one of the fundamental pieces of the genre. John Tobias even said that Karate Champ was more of an influence on Mortal Kombat than Street Fighter was.
What gets me most about that scene, though, is the trash talk. Ray asks Frank “Aren’t you a little young for full contact?” Frank counters by asking, “Aren’t you a little old for video games?” They settle by playing another round.
It’s a simple sequence that’s hard not to look back on as an early indication that the popularity of films like Bloodsport would directly influence of new era of fighting games defined by competitiveness, arcade trash talk, and advancing technology that would inspire fans and developers to replicate the feel of being at the Kumite or, in our world, in a movie like Bloodsport.
In the same way that Mortal Kombat is basically an unofficial Bloodsport game, maybe it’s time to look back at Bloodsport as a kind of unofficial video game movie. After all, it may have debuted at the end of a strange kind of golden era for Hollywood martial arts films, but it was just the beginning of the golden age of fighting games.

World-building June - Day 4: History
THIS IS OBSCENELY LONG AND PROBABLY OBSCENELY BORING SO IT’S GOING UNDER A CUT! i might add more to it as i think of it
Since humans became smart enough to make civilisations – emotion magic is a thing but nobody knows how to harness it and many people are unconvinced it’s actually real so everywhere has its own myths and legends about it (once upon a time these two people were so in love that their love burned down a whole country, etc). Kind of like how we have stories about ghosts and vampires and werewolves and stuff. One popular belief is that it comes from the moons, so when they’re full the magic is particularly Strong.
476 – The Roman Empire does NOT fall/split, it does just goddamn fine. There’s no squabbling over who becomes the next emperor because they use a normal system of getting it off your relatives. It extends a lot further than in Dimension 1, integrating all the “barbarians” that otherwise would have invaded and contributed to its downfall in our world. The Dark Ages don’t happen and Christianity doesn’t become so huge. It still exists but it doesn’t have a monopoly on education and shit.
999 – This is when it ACTUALLY falls. The emperor is assassinated and the whole empire collectively loses its shit because there is no one to take over. It splits into a bunch of new countries with their own rulers. From here on, technology and science and knowledge in general proceed a lot faster than they do in Dimension 1, as there was no period of regression to prevent it from doing so.
1503 – The Sengoku Period of Japan (feudal Japan) is shorter than it is in Dimension 1 and ends here, the country becomes unified and likewise develops quicker. Samurai have so many guns and they keep those guns.
1885 – Cars exist now. Also the USA declares its independence from the British Empire (which is still obscenely fucking huge).
1910-18 – There is a surge in “incidents” supposedly involving emotion magic and since video now exists, stuff has been recorded and now there’s growing interest in it.
1919 – Morgan-Ellis Labs is founded to try and find out what exactly emotion power can do. [note to self the name comes from Russ Morgan and Seger Ellis whomst wrote the music for It’s All Over But The Crying i.e the fallout 4 theme song]
1920 – Madnug is born.
1929 – All these empires (Britain, USA, Russia, Japan, China, Germany) are getting too big for their own good and relations between all of them are strained. They’re all racing to make the biggest goddamn bomb ever.
1929-44 – Some form of Cold War. Everyone wants to go to war but don’t want to destroy the entire planet (yet). Massive amounts of xenophobically charged crimes all over the world. It’s just a thing that happens now. The research on emotion power slows down as “fear” and “anger” dominate everything. Also during this time, fossil fuels are running low which of course does not help. Meanwhile Morgan-Ellis are trying to figure out if emotion can be used as a power source like it’s electricity or something.
1940 – Madnug moves from Japan to Boston, to work at Morgan-Ellis Labs.
1945 – October 21: The president of the USA is assassinated by a Russian and shit just kicks the FUCK off.
October 23: The War starts, and then ends a day later. Very little of humanity survives the initial bombs, and even more die off in the aftermath.
Morgan-Ellis Labs is one of a few places that had a bunker built underneath it in anticipation of a war so most people working there manage to survive the firestorms that happen immediately after the bombs fall. They stay in the bunker until it’s safe to actually be outside the lab.
Madnug and the other survivors from the lab start trying to help anyone left outside. There aren’t many but they stick together.
1946 – The General appears in Dimension 0, in a much smaller and weaker state than it “currently” is.
The survivors now have a settlement near what used to be Laconia, NH, as it’s away from where the nukes hit. They’ve named it Sanctuary. However resources are running low and tensions are high, nobody really knows what to do as there are no animals and growing crops has had little to no success.
On October 23, exactly a year after the bombs fell and also Madnug’s birthday, one of these arguments happens and she just goes off by herself for a while to be miserable. The general locks in on her misery and appears before her, communicating telepathically. It claims it can make everything better through bringing “help” from alternate dimensions, but it needs Madnug’s help to do this. For the next few months, Madnug secretly builds a gate to be used for inter dimensional travel according to the general’s instructions. It’s a bit haphazard but it’ll do.
1947 – The general tells Madnug that he/it can provide the final bit of power to open the gate, but in order to do that it needs some (more) negative energy. Madnug doesn’t understand how any more of it could possibly be generated, the entire world is dead and those who are left are rapidly losing the will to live. The general talks Madnug into shooting all those who are left but in such a way that they die slowly. It’s for the greater good, he says. Once we can access alternate dimensions and get what we need, we can start over. Be the creators of our own civilisation. Madnug doesn’t want to do this and tries to kill herself instead but she seems immune to death??? The general keeps her alive no matter what and since he’s basically bonded to her now there’s nothing she can do so she has to do what he says.
The gate to Dimension 1 is opened. Madnug and the general “recruit” people (mostly soldiers and prisoners from WW2) to steal resources from Dimension 1’s Earth, recover things from the bombed places in Dimension 0 (usually dying in the process) and start building up a proper settlement in Sanctuary. The planet itself is also kind of called Sanctuary at this point too and it sticks.
1948 – The general grows a lot larger and more powerful from the misery of the people stolen who are doing his dirty work and he is able to open gates to other dimensions now. The next wave of people to be recruited are made to join an army which invades these other dimensions to either steal more resources or just cause mayhem for whoever lives there (if anyone). This is also when the general becomes known as “The General”.
1950 – Sanctuary is now a fairly large city and the army is the reason is it able to function. The army is named the Platinum Army. I currently don’t have an explanation for this because I got it from a song lmao.
Madnug starts trying to learn every kind of science possible for “something to keep her sane” in between going to recruit people and the general doing his thing.
1965 – The after-effects of the bombs have decreased enough to be “safe”. Crops do better in the small spaces where they can be grown, the ozone is healing, the smoke clouds are thinning, the sun is more visible more often, rain/snow is more frequent, the overall temperature is no longer Fucking Freezing, etc.
1976-77 – A small group starts to figure out the emotion magic of Dimension 0 and tries to utilise it to make an attack on the general. They get disposed of almost immediately.
1980 – Madnug should be 60 now but she still looks like she’s in her mid-late 20s. Immune to death and immune to aging? She has long since stopped interacting with anyone in the Platinum Army unless it’s absolutely necessary and even then her identity is well hidden. She still recruits people though, but no longer by herself, sometimes other people are sent to do it too.
1986 – The general is now powerful enough to devour entire goddamn planets when they’ve been ransacked to his satisfaction.
1995-96 – The internet becomes common use for everyone in Sanctuary, though it’s used for communication a lot more than information, as information is mostly lost and/or borrowed from Dimension 1. Cell phones are also common use.
2003 – Trashland starts!!!!!!!

The Art In The Awareness Of Time
youtube
Human attention span has supposedly dropped from 12 seconds in 2002 to only eight seconds in 2013, which is a second shorter than a goldfish. So, it makes perfect sense that content creators are constantly working on ways to keep us engaged in their work. Some people will edit flashy photos, or queue their videos to catchy music, and maybe even set something on fire - because, why not? The fact is that, it’s true! We need, as creators and artists, to be able to look ahead and not only entertain our audiences for more than eight seconds, but for as long as we possibly can. This is where the trouble comes up for many! It’s often that we find ourselves stuck in a pattern of comfort and convenience and don’t get out and try something, fail, pick it up and do it better next time.
I recently have started a lot of these. I started a YouTube Channel, and someone left me a comment explaining that my talking points were too quiet - something I completely missed, when I was editing. So, I made sure that everything seemed more balanced while recording and also while editing my second video. I took something new (recording my voice and editing the tracks) and failed, but then got back and did it again - Just better.
Today, I’m happy to have you here, and happy to share with you a new tool to add to your creative collective - The Hyperlapse.
I guarantee that starting off you’ll get discouraged and frustrated because, as the effect is so cool to see, when done well, it’s a trick of temperance and knowing that you will be spending a lot of time photographing and editing to make something that will last for moments. And I live for this kind of work.
First, if you haven’t seen my video on YouTube, demonstrating this technique from beginning to end, please check it out HERE.
If you have seen it, Thanks! Now on to iron out the finer details that might be missed in the video.
These days a lot of people ask me what kind of gear they should be using to take their photos. I try to offer my favorite bits of kit, but never forget to explain that any camera will work. Most Smartphones today are more powerful than the DSLR I’ve been using over the past 5 years! So, when I shot the video, I wanted to show that you can make a killer hyperlapse with anything that takes still photos - lots of them. The idea behind a hyper lapse is pretty simple: create a moving Time-lapse. To do this, you will be taking as many photos as you can between two points and have a fixed point that you can always focus on, as a reference. Many people create Hyperlapses with Tripods or a Monopod (which I used whilst shooting the video at the beginning of the tutorial), but you can even create them hand-held, if there is enough light out! I wanted to showcase this by setting up my Sony A7S on a tripod, far away, and made a time-lapse of me making a hyperlapse (hyperlapse inception) with just my iPhone 6S, handheld and nothing fancy about it.
The specific tips I’d recommend for the photo-taking process are simple enough. If you are using a tripod/monopod, move the stand the width of your foot, for each photo. This is really handy (footy?) so that you have a consistent distance per shot, and this is important because before you take a single photo, you want to walk the path you’re planning on taking and do a couple things (I know, this get more and more complex).
Find the scene you want to shoot. In the example in the video, I wanted to focus on capturing the movement of the pier, along with the movement of the birds and the boats. The sky was pretty flat and overcast, but there was a little cloud movement, which is always a great thing to catch in a time-lapse/hyperlapse. I then walked the distance, Heel-to-toe, so I could gauge how many photos I would be able to take. This is important because you’re essentially making a little video, and videos have rules, like frames per second. (Breathe…) So, for example, if I walked Heel-to-toe and took 15 steps, and took a photograph every half step, or the width of my foot, I would have roughly 30 photos. And if I decided to make my video 30fps (frames per second), then I would have a one second hyperlapse, which is never very impressive, considering how much work you’re about to do to get it. So, shoot as many photos as you can, and the shorter the distance you need to travel, the smoother your video will be. Just remember that if you want to have a 5 second hyperlapse, you’ll need to shoot about 150 photos, and I usually aim to shoot every two seconds, or as quickly as I can. If you want a really epic and long Hyperlapse, be prepared to shoot and hold a camera for a long time. The statue at Columbus Circle, in the video, took me about 45 minutes to shoot during the day, and I repeated it at night, so I could have the option of when to cut. It should put into perspective how many photos were taken and edited to make my 1 minute Hyperlapse at the beginning of the video (I took over 5000 photos and ended up using around 2000, so that I’d have options).
You also want to make sure that as soon as you’re ready to start your hyperlapse, you won’t need to stop for anything. A time-lapse is convincing because it takes so many photos, evenly, so we can see how the clouds move smoothly across the sky. So, if you’re shooting a Hyperlapse and get a call from your Cousin Tom - don’t answer it. If you have to pee, suddenly - don’t stop shooting. This is all because you want the smoothest and most realistic capturing of time and those clouds you’re not noticing moving will be really obvious when you’re editing.
Once you’ve shot your photos, you’ll want to drop them onto your laptop and open up Adobe Lightroom. This program and Adobe After Effects are so important for this effect to look as smooth and professional as possible, so if you don’t have them already, I’d suggest downloading the Adobe Creative Cloud and pay the monthly fee to use the programs - it gives me access to everything for a relatively inexpensive look, but I’m pretty sure you will also have a 30 day free trial period.
Once in Lightroom, import your photos and then scroll towards the middle of the hyperlapse. Select one in the middle and begin to edit it to your heart’s content. As you can see in the video, I put a lot of time and work into creating the most dynamic photo, so get familiar with working with Lightroom and have fun. This part of the process is so enjoyable to me because it’s the meat of the hyperlapse - if this looks bad, the video won’t look any better.
After you edit the photo, select copy, or hit Command+ C (copy) and then highlight all of the photos. Once they’re all selected and showing with a white box around them, select the “Sync” button, make sure everything is selected in the boxes to the window that pops up, and hit Enter. Boom, now you have placed the edits you made on the one photo, on all the photos. Best feeling ever. Now, with everything still selected, hit Command+Shift+E (Export) and fill out where you’d like the files to end up. Give the project an easy but relevant name and make sure they’re jpegs that are resized to around 2500-3000 pixels. Much larger and you’re editing in After Effects will take forever, and any smaller, you risk losing information to work with. Hit Enter and Bam, you are one step closer to finishing up. Once you’ve exported your photos, open up After Effects and get ready.
I know in the video I sped things up quite a bit and may have rushed certain points, but that’s only because there are hundreds of videos on YouTube that talk about similar things, and I felt that I can write a little more on here to help.
In AE, hit Command+i to import your sequence of photos. I say sequence of photos because the way AE works is awesome. You won’t have to add every photo, but just click one in the sequence and hit enter. It will import all of the photos in one folder, rather than hundreds of separate folders. Then I like to change the default 8bpc to 16bpc for more information to work with, resulting in a higher quality video. I then take the sequenced folder of my photos and drag it beside the 16bpc icon, to create a new composition.
Here you’ll be able to set up all sorts of customized options, but for now you can just hit enter and get started on the hyperlapse, since we’ll go back later and change the Comp settings.
If you hit the space bar or RAM Preview button, you’ll be able to see what the Hyperlapse looks like at the beginning - usually just awful. It doesn’t matter how steady we are, if you’re using a tripod or not, these things just never look that great before the editing process. Now, hopefully, you can really cut down your editing time by a lot, with the effect “Warp Stabilizer” alone. This tool is fantastic and usually does a pretty good job with correcting your image by selecting position points that are familiar throughout, accounting for rotation and scaling the photo down a bit with a crop to get rid of weird edges.
But, if it doesn’t work, or doesn’t work as well as you’d like, I’ll now be showing how to do everything the manual way. It’s the same thing that Warp Stabilizer does, but you will have the control to make sure everything stays tracked.
So, if Warp Stabilizer doesn’t want to work very well, you can just delete it from your video file - for now. What you will want to do is go to the “Window” tab at the top of the screen and select Tracker. With that open, click on your video file, on the timeline, and select Stabilize Motion. You’ll notice that it already has the box with the word “Position” checked and a box will appear on your preview screen. Expand the outside box a bit and the inner box a little as well. In the middle should be a small +, which is the point you’re tracking. You want to place this somewhere in the center of the screen, usually on whatever you were using as your fixed tracking point, when shooting the photos to begin with. You also want there to be a significant amount of contrast where your point meets, so, in my video, I used the top of the tower, which was black. Against the sky, it’s a perfect spot to track.
Underneath the “Stabilize Motion” button, you’ll see a few buttons that look like “play forward/backward” buttons. The far right is track forward one frame, and the one before it is just track forward. I really feel it’s better to always track forward one frame at a time, so that you can follow the points and reposition them where they need to be. The computer will do a pretty good job keeping the points where they need to be, but there will always be points where they fall off. It took me fifteen minutes to track my example video at the pier because it kept losing the focus.
Once you’re done and have tracked every frame, hit Apply and select X + Y, which are your Left/Right and Up/Down coordinates. If you hit the space bar and let it render through, you’ll be able to see exactly what you did. Now your images should all be rearranged so that the tracked point you selected is perfectly framed and level. To test this, place your cursor on the point you tracked and make sure that the point you tracked doesn’t move off the point your cursor is resting on. So, now that you have a fixed position, you’re getting closer. But you’ll notice that it still has a wobble, like the photos are rotating around that point you made, like you stuck a tack in a stack of photos and moved them around. So, let’s fix that.
The project you just worked on is your composition, with the position edit you just made. Go to the top and slide to the side to get back to your comp window, select that comp you just made and drag that into the composition box again. This is creating a new comp with the effects you already applied on the last comp. Think of it like, saving your file and reloading it, to do more work on. Clean Slate.
We are going to be doing the same thing in this comp as the last comp, with a slight twist.
Go to Windows, select Tracker and click Stabilize Motion. But now, select Rotation and deselect Position.
You’ll see that there are now two boxes. Don’t worry. It’s the same idea. Expand the outer and inner boxes of each one, and drag them to two points, near the center and running on a vertical or horizontal plain. In the example at the pier, I chose the same pole and just found a point at the base. I put one at the top and one at the bottom and Boom, hit Track Forward and make adjustments as you go, if you need to. Hit Apply and select X+Y. When you RAM preview this footage it’ll be deceiving. It’ll look like it’s having a seizure and also smooth at the same time. This is because it’s almost done. What we have been doing is setting your computer up with the best version of the end product as possible, so with the final step, we’re going to run Warp Stabilizer again and it’ll take an already pretty awesome, smooth hyperlapse and make it so smooth.
Drag the second comp that we just worked on, with the Rotation tracking, into a new composition (So, this should be your third comp). Go to the effects tab, go to Distort and select at the bottom Warp Stabilization. Let it render and interpret the footage - this will take a minute or two. You can also boost the Smoothness up to around 100, from 50, and be sure that the Method box is choosing Subspace Warp. Hit RAM preview and see how smooth the hyperlapse has become!
All you have to do now is set it up for the formatted size you’d like to show it on. I like to share in HD, so go back to the top of the screen and select Composition, then select Composition Settings. Here you can make it perfect. Deselect the Aspect Ratio Lock and change your comp size to 1920x1080 and change your frame rate to 24fps, so that for every second of playtime, 24 frames will pass by, rather than 30. This way, you can have a slightly longer video and it’ll feel more natural to watch, since we’ve been watching films at 24fps since the invention of the Motion Picture - which you just created.
Hit select to apply the effects, then add the final Comp to the Render Queue, change the Lossless format from Animation to Apple Pro Res 422 (HQ). Then confirm that choice, hit render and you have FINALLY made your awesome Hyperlapse video.
They are addicting and there will always be room to get better, so keep working at them and tag me in any projects that you work on!
Best, Bobby

10 Demos That Made a Good Impression
June 22, 2020 10:00 AM EST
With a wealth of game demos, I played a large selection and selected the most interesting that I could find in The Steam Game Festival.
The Steam Game Festival event that is happening right now is a pretty great idea. With all the usual gaming conventions and events cancelled due to current events, why not utilize the expanding digital space? I’ve long been a proponent of game demos, since there’s little better way to know if a game will land. Combining a week-long digital event with public access to a variety of demos and alpha builds is clever, and I hope something like it will continue.
One demo sampling spree later, I had marathoned through much of what the library offered. In total, I’ve played 24 different demos to completion, to the point that I’m as exhausted as if I’d been on a convention show floor. I intended to write impressions pieces for all of these games, so I set myself the limit of two paragraphs per demo. I’ve chosen to split these impressions into two articles so as not to completely overwhelm everyone.
For today, here are the 10 demos among the 24 that stood out to me the most, and why. They’ve not been arranged in any specific order; all of them grabbed me in different ways, so this list shall not be numbered.
Starmancer
youtube
Starmancer is a city builder and management sim set on a space station. You set up the infrastructure, reconstitute your colonists from biomass, and then make sure their needs are comfortably met. In return, the colonists can be assigned jobs, which they will gradually level up in. With the right infrastructure, you can scan the system for points of interest to deploy missions to. From this, you can gain additional resources and colonists. With the variety of features and systems at play, Starmancer is pretty damn good, even if it’s nothing that hasn’t been seen before.
The game is well presented, has lots of interesting systems, and handles well for this point in its development. My biggest concern is that I was unable to get water during my demo time, as I never found the required ice asteroids to mine. If mission appearance is reliant on RNG, it’ll eventually be bad luck that sees you out of water, and therefore out of oxygen. My original draft pointed this out as a flaw, but it’s already been patched to be more common, so issue solved. With a decent tail in the research tree to keep gameplay fresh, Starmancer would definitely be worth your time, so here’s hoping it turns out even better.
Ghostrunner
youtube
There’s been a real dearth of movement-heavy first-person games since Titanfall 2 and Mirror’s Edge. In comes Ghostrunner, evoking feelings of both of those. It’s a fast-paced game in which you play a cyborg aiming to climb a cyberpunk tower and kill the Keymaster at the top. To do this, you have the ability to run, slide, wall run, use a grappling hook, and even air dash through obstacles. These obstacles are frequently gun-toting enemies that will kill you in one shot, but die in equally short order.
I had an absolute blast playing this one. It utterly begs the player to go fast, think quickly, and use all the tools at their disposal to traverse the environment. Death is frequent but respawning is as snappy, so it constantly drove me to try again. The premise is interesting, the possibilities are enticing, and the demo is way too short. I finished it in just ten minutes, but seeing that timer at the end just made me want to replay it and do it better. Can’t wait to see speed runners get their hands on this, let alone play it for real myself. Ghostrunner is one to watch.
Fights in Tight Spaces
youtube
This game wins the Best Name award for this list of previews. That said, it’s also right up there in winning the most approval from me. Fights in Tight Spaces is awesome. It’s a turn-based deck-building game in which you play cards to move around and utilize attacks to best your opponents. What really makes it special is that the player has perfect information; you know exactly what the enemies are going to do. By moving around or utilizing this correctly, you can have them strike each other or set up for more intense combinations.
Completing fights gives you new cards and money with which to heal or tune your deck a bit for future fights. It’s simple, effective, and there’s a lot of possibilities for how these scenarios can play out. The idea of an intense tactical fighting game played via cards might not sound like much, but Fights in Tight Spaces makes it work. The minimalist presentation in the vein of Superhot suits the gameplay immensely. All that’s lacking here is a playback that runs the entire fight at full speed afterwards. Give me that, and I’ll happily pay up to live out my John Wick fantasies in this game.
Spiritfarer
youtube
I’d seen a trailer for Spiritfarer previously, but going into this demo nonetheless surprised and delighted me. It’s another sort of management and base-building game, this time set on a boat. You build additions and rooms to meet the needs of the people you’re journeying with, grow crops, fish, and juggle resources. All sounds good enough so far. But then you realize that you’re effectively Charon, ferryman of the underworld, and your residents are spirits being guided to their resting place. Somehow, despite that, the game can only be described as “comfortable.”
Spiritfarer has an achingly beautiful palette of art and colours to it. The animation is gorgeous, the sounds are fantastic, and the entire presentation is so charming and whimsical despite the sober theme and tone. Some of the tasks can be a little chore-like, but with enough passengers and things to juggle, I could really see it being an engaging set of systems. There is a lot to love here, and if executed right, this could definitely be a sleeper hit. Again, Spiritfarer was an absolute delight, and I am looking forward to playing the full thing immensely.
The Riftbreaker
youtube
I won’t mince words: this was my personal favourite of all the games I played for this piece, no question. The Riftbreaker is an absolute maelstrom of game systems. You play as a scientist in a mech suit deployed to an alien planet, and have to establish a base of operations. That means RTS-esque gathering of resources, building a base, and setting up automation and defences. This base then becomes an upgradable ARPG hub where you can outfit yourself with new equipment and research. Go out, explore, beat up hostile creatures, gather more resources and upgrades, and deal with an increasingly escalating pushback against you.
I’m a sucker for this kind of interwoven set of systems, and the combination of everything here is executed really well. The action feels good, customization is plentiful, the base construction is intricate, and the tech tree decently varied. Individual systems don’t seem to dominate one another; it all plays well and loops back together. Given that games with smaller and less ambitious systems often struggle with such a concept, this level of intricacy is seriously impressive. It even looks and sounds pretty good, to boot! For a game I knew nothing about previously, The Riftbreaker is now near the top of my list of most anticipated upcoming games.
30XX
youtube
More than any other game on this list, 30XX needed no introduction to me. It’s a sequel to the excellent roguelike Mega Man-esque game 20XX, which I still routinely play on my Switch to this day. I was happy to hear of its announcement, and happier still to play this demo and ascertain that it’s absolutely more of the same. This is a good thing.
Because I didn’t need to know much more about it, I didn’t play 30XX for very long. It’s a combat-focused sidescrolling platformer with some roguelike level generation. Items and set pieces are hidden in the levels and can potentially change up your powers, build, and stats. But more than anything, it’s a solid demo that does the likes of Mega Man proud. The new levels and enemies play well thus far, and I look forward to seeing what more comes of it. Suck it, Mighty No. 9.
Cris Tales
youtube
Other writers at DualShockers have covered Cris Tales in more depth previously, so I’ll defer to them for this one. I will say that this was my first time experiencing it hands-on, and now I’m completely in love with Cris Tales. It’s a gorgeous world with some seriously fantastic gameplay systems regarding time manipulation. I loved it, and I’m right on board with Nick on his thoughts about it. Can’t wait to play the full thing.
Solasta: Crown of the Magister
youtube
This was another real surprise! Solasta: Crown of the Magister is a near perfect recreation and implementation of 5th Edition D&D rules into a video game. The full breakdown of actions and turns is here, as are all the specific class mechanics and options that you’d find in a tabletop session. Solasta comes equipped with a pretty functional character creator, but the gameplay demo utilizes a premade party. Nonetheless, the character creator is available to demonstrate how well it translates.
Even without my own characters, the adventure demo was really quite impressive. There’s party interactions and banter, as well as dialogue with NPCs where you can choose who chimes in or makes a skill check. This will be present for a player-created party as well, according to the devs. I doubt it’ll be quite at the level of Baldur’s Gate 2 or other such classics, but there is a lot to love here. The actual combat and dungeon crawling was varied, with lots of approaches and secrets to find.
Alongside Larian’s Baldur’s Gate 3, we now have Solasta to show what a modern D&D video game can play like. Very impressed and looking forward to the full campaign.
Cartel Tycoon
youtube
Cartel Tycoon is — as the name implies — a management/tycoon sim in which you build up and manage a criminal business. You build up farms, ship the farm goods to industrial buildings for processing, then dispatch them to be sold at trade hubs. The catch between this and a standard city builder/tycoon game is that the farm grows cannabis, the industry rolls it into joints and hides it amongst legal goods, and the trade hub is a private airfield. It’s a slightly more subtle version of Tropico, in other words.
The mechanics and gameplay in Cartel Tycoon is pretty solid and the game feels quite polished and presentable. There’s a little bit of micromanagement, as your cartel boss and lieutenants are movable units that you can control. You can use them to take over territory, boost the output of buildings, or conduct actions that you’ve yet to research the automation of. I quite enjoyed my time with it, but there was a bit of concern in the late game when I found myself snowballing into an unwinnable scenario. A few more means of balancing out the Terror rating would be nice, but the effects of it causing police or federal agencies to tamper with you was a nice touch. Quite a good game, and one I’ll keep an eye on.
Cosmoteer
youtube
This game is a treat. Cosmoteer sees you starting with a simply designed spaceship, and you take it into space to fight other ships. Defeating them nets you money, and money lets you purchase upgrades and redesign your ship entirely as you see fit. Want to make it durable, fly super fast, or simply be a floating brick with a giant railgun? All of these are options. There’s a real satisfying feel to building a good ship layout, then unleashing it on the galaxy and destroying them component by component.
New aspects of gameplay opened as the game continued, and I found myself increasingly more impressed by the scope of it. Want to buy multiple ships and control them as a fleet? That’s an option. Want to accurately control and try to maximize the output of the ship against tougher targets? No problem. Or, you can just keep on building up the one ship into a hodgepodge nightmare or monster battleship, if you’d like. Cosmoteer is clearly a real passion project and I was quite impressed. There’s already a selection of original or iconic sci-fi ships that come pre-built to tinker with, some of which are community-created. Creativity is sure to run rampant with this one!
These were the definite standouts to me from my time spent sampling The Steam Game Festival demos. The event will officially be wrapping up today, so if any of these sounded appealing, you should go check them out and show your support. I will probably end up picking up the full release of most of the games listed here. As for the other games I played, tune in soon and I’ll share my impressions of them in a bonus lightning round.
