there is a certain balance to alec hardy characterization that will make a broadchurch fic click for me or not and i think it's like.. he's not really that insecure, he's actually got a fair amount of pride, but also he doesn't think he deserves any sympathy or comfort and he is somewhat of a pushover when it comes to the people he cares about the most and this is why he is overly self reliant and completely unable to ask for help. like his coworkers hating him or his reputation being dragged through the mud does not faze him but on the other hand i think he wouldn't be able to really register, like, relationship red flags as such bc he's used to a lack of love/affection from others
