Tribal Immunity #1 - The Marooning
Welcome to camp!
Oh, wait, there’s nothing here waiting for you. It’s day one!
For your first immunity challenge, you’ll have to divide up your tribe among five necessary tasks that happen at the beginning of the game.
I know this season is Iceland-themed; please suspend your disbelief!
Bamboo Chopping
Two players from each tribe
Chopping bamboo is an intensely physical task, so this section will be as well.
This challenge will require you to be on cam and it will be recorded for the viewers and the results post.
I will add all four players to a chat. There, we will find a time when everyone can come on a Google hangout, which I will host (or will find a friend to host, depending on my availability).
This challenge will be recorded and broadcast live, so if you aren’t comfy on call, it’s not for you.
Bring a normal-sized disposable plastic cup to the call. Ideally, a clear cup, but a Solo cup works well. Do not bring a glass cup, metal cup, Dixie cup, or anything that is very small, very large, or very heavy. This is for your own good.
You will hold the cup upside-down above your head with four fingers (two on each hand) until you cannot anymore.
I’ve never seen this challenge go for more than 30-45 minutes at max (it’s usually more like 10-15), but you never know, so we’ll aim to have an hour set aside. If we can’t find a time, we can extend the challenge, and if it drags we’ll add extra hard elements. If y’all wanna go wild and do it tonight we can!
The last person standing will win this section for their tribe.
----
Fire making
One player from each tribe
Making a fire requires a careful balance of speed and precision. This typing endurance challenge will test those skills.
In your host chat, you will send messages where you collect twigs, bundle them together, and catch sparks on them.
When you collect three twigs, you can bundle them. When you make three bundles, a spark will catch.
Each step should be a different message.
To get to the first spark, your messages would look like this:
I collect twig 1
I collect twig 2
I collect twig 3
I add bundle 1 to my pile
I collect twig 4
I collect twig 5
I collect twig 6
I add bundle 2 to my pile
I collect twig 7
I collect twig 8
I collect twig 9
I add bundle 3 to my pile
Spark 1 catches
And so on, continuing with twig 10, 11, 12, bundle 4, 5, 6, spark 2, etc.
YOU MUST TELL ME BEFORE YOU START THE CHALLENGE. If you spam me with a hundred messages in a row, so help me god.
The person who catches more sparks will win this section for their tribe.
-----
Water collecting
Two players from each tribe
Going for water isn’t exactly difficult. Anyone could do it. But it’s necessary, and there’s often something waiting over by the well, so you can do some searching on the way.
For this challenge, you will have to take pictures of as many objects starting with ‘b’ as you can. Compile all of your images in a single Google folder, name each file what the object is (i.e. ‘book’) and send me the link to the entire thing when you’re done. Do not spam me with images or I will be so sad.
Either your face or a card with your name and the date must be in each and every picture along with the thing you’re capturing.
The team which finds the most items will win this section for their tribe. The individual player who gets the most items overall will also get a clue to the hidden immunity idol hunt.
-----
Making Rice
One player from each tribe
Everyone needs to eat, so you’ll be in charge of boiling a nice big pot of rice for everyone on the tribe. Head over to https://freerice.com/game
This website donates 10 grains of rice for every question answered correctly, provided that you play with ads on. Please actually disable your adblocker.
1. Create a NEW ACCOUNT. Please make your username something related to the game, like nametribename or namesurvivoriceland, something that will indicate to me that it’s truly a new account created for this game.
2. Play the game while logged in! You can play in whatever category you want, jump around, whatever. As long as you’re logged into your account, your overall rice total should be calculated. I recommend keeping ongoing screenshots of your total when you reach big milestones in case something happens.
3. When you’re happy with your overall total, submit a screenshot of your account page including the date, time, and your name and tribe name written in the URL bar. Here’s what that should look like:
You can only submit one final screenshot.
The player who donates more rice will win this section for their tribe.
Stay Out of the Way
Two players from each tribe
Let’s face it: One of the most important tasks you can do to lay low is stay out of the way of the people with the strong opinions! A great way to do this is by distracting yourself with one of the most frustrating flash games available, Winter Bells: https://www.ferryhalim.com/orisinal/g3/bells.htm
Play the game to get the highest score possible. When you reach a score you’re happy with, take a screenshot OF YOUR ENTIRE SCREEN, WITH THE DATE AND TIME VISIBLE, WITH YOUR NAME AND TRIBE NAME WRITTEN IN THE URL BAR.
Here is an example of an acceptable screenshot:
You can play the game as many times as you want, but you can only submit one screenshot to count.
You must submit a SCREENSHOT. Don’t test me with a picture from your phone. If your PC doesn’t have screenshotting software, I recommend Lightshot or Jing.
Both players’ scores will be added together, but individual scores will be available on the results post. The team with the overall highest score will win this section for their tribe.
-----
The tribe which wins the majority of the sections will win immunity and be safe from the first tribal council! A member of the losing tribe will learn the sweet sting of being first boot.
You must complete your section of this challenge by November 16 at 11pm EST.
Tell me which player will be competing in which section within the hour. Not everybody has to agree, but someone needs to send a list to me.

4 Things Every Successful Email Marketing Campaign Needs
Email marketing is a unique combination of low cost and high returns.
If you’ve taken some interest in email marketing, it’s unlikely you’ve missed this fantastic piece of statistics: email marketing offers an ROI of 4400%.
The big question, however, is what’s your own email marketing ROI?
If you’re nowhere close to the magical figure of 4400%, congratulations, you’ve got a lot of room to improve your results.
How you can improve your email marketing performance
Instead of trying to improve your email marketing as a whole, it’s better to break it down into important components and improve each component separately.
There are two advantages to working this way:
You pay more attention to details
You know which change produced what results
Let’s break down email marketing into four distinct areas. Each of this area, when improved, contributes to the success of your email marketing:
Better landing pages
More subscribers
Clean mailing lists
Pre-send testing of emails
Now we’ll take up each of these four areas to discuss how you can work on them to achieve a better ROI.
1. Build better landing pages
Landing pages can be a huge topic to fit into just a handful of paragraphs. However, here’s the minimum you need to know when designing or improving your landing pages.
How well your landing pages perform will largely depend upon your answer to the following questions every visitor has:
I’m interested in ‘X’. Does your website have ‘X’?
Lots of sites have ‘X’. Why should I use your ‘X’?
This ‘X’ is your product offering: a course, a pair of shoes, an e-book, the trial version of a software, a pack of herbal tea, a certain piece of information… anything.
Your landing page is the visitors’ first impression and interaction with your brand, so make sure you please your visitors. Make sure they see your best side - in all likelihood you won’t get a second chance.
Landing pages can also be pop-ups you place on your website or email links. It’s important to keep your landing pages and pop-ups jargon-free, convincing and direct for your visitors.
Here’s why.
Let’s say you run an online store for kitchen appliances, one of which is a knife. You know what exactly a utility knife does. Your visitors don’t.
Don’t make it difficult for them to find the knife by asking them convoluted questions or asking them to tick off eleven uses of the knife before you can show them what they’re looking for. Make it easy for them to easily locate the product.
Next comes the question of pop-ups: how will you use them?
There are different types of pop-ups and each pop-up has its own unique strength. Understanding pop-ups in detail will tell you how to use pop-ups on your website.
Pop-ups are mostly used to build a mailing list. It’s important you give your visitors a good reason to sign up.
Example: Neil Patel
Provided you use pop-ups in a non-intrusive, helpful manner, they can bring you wonderful results. The key, as always, lies in testing what works and what doesn’t.
2. Work on getting more subscribers
To many marketers believe that the subscribers are only needed for more traffic - and hopefully more business.
That’s half the story.
You need more subscribers to a wide range of reasons. One of which is for your email success.
Growing your email listing helps to increase your chances of leads. Leads are potential customers that can become short or long term buyers of your brand. More subscribers aren’t just a number you get to brag about, it the opportunity to see potential revenue and a community of people to build brand loyalty with over time.
Here are some of the many ways you can attract more subscribers:
Create free-plus-gated content: Create great content and keep a part of it gated. Have readers subscribe to your newsletter (or course, or whatever) in exchange of the gated content.
Design a quiz: Invite your visitors to answer a quiz and offer to share the results and explanations to those who subscribe.
Add a CTA to your podcasts: At the beginning and/or at the end of your podcasts, invite listeners to sign up so that they don’t miss anything you offer.
Offer a trial period: Let visitors try your product in exchange of their email address.
Keep your sign-up form short: You don’t need any information beyond their name and email address. Check out the below image of the signup form that QuickEmailVerification uses.

3. Maintain clean email lists
Having a big mailing list is good, but seasoned marketers will tell you that’s not enough.
A mailing list with poor quality email addresses hurts your deliverability - many of your emails will land inside the Spam folder instead of the regular inbox. Your Sender Reputation suffers because of the email ecosystem begins suspecting you’re a spammer.
The ideal solution to this problem is to clean your mailing lists regularly. An email checking tool will remove expired, disposable or otherwise undeliverable email addresses from your mailing list. If you’re wondering why verify email addresses, remember clean list is one of your surest bets to improve deliverability.
At the end of the email verification, you get a clean list that is not only safe to send but will also give you a much better inbox placement and practically zero hard bounce.
.
As mentioned earlier, many email addresses die each year when people quit jobs or move to another organization and so on. As a result, it’s a good idea to clean your list of email addresses every year.
4. Test emails before you hit Send
Even if your mailing list is as small as 100, you can’t afford to make mistakes. That’s because just one slip ends up being visible on 100 screens!
In other words, every mistake you make on the email gets multiplied by the number on your mailing list. That’s why you simply can’t afford to make mistakes in your email. This is where you want to check and double-check your emails before you hit Send.
Here are some of the important things to check before you send emails:
Do images (if any) render properly?
How does the email render on different email clients?
Are all links within the email working right?
Is the copy of the email spammy?
Are there any issues when you view the email on hand-held devices?
What’s your sender IP reputation?
Do you have your SPF and DKIM records in place?
Is the CTA button or link easy to locate?
Does the CTA button work right?
How good is the Subject line?
Before you hit send here are 7 Things To Test Before Sending An Email.
Try A/B Test your emails, it allows you to see what's working and what's not. For example, if your test results say headline option 2 is better than option 1 there’s the likelihood that your readers would prefer that option. You must use your own judgment regarding how to use the results.
Conclusion
Just like all other marketing channels, email marketing involves experimenting, measuring and improving. That’s why the details matter when you’re trying to improve your email marketing campaign performance.
Begin by focusing on building better landing pages and improving your pop-ups. Your next goal is to get more subscribers without forgetting the fact that the quality of your email list will be critical. Make sure to regularly clean your mailing lists. Finally, test your emails before you hit Send.

9 Preheader Text Mistakes that Nosedive Your Email Open Rates
Getting your business emails opened is like threading a needle.
You fail more times than you succeed.
Inboxes are jammed as brands jostle for people’s attention on the most profitable channel of all— email. In such a highly competitive environment you have to go an extra mile to succeed with your email marketing campaigns.
Success starts with subscribers opening your emails; otherwise your campaign’s dead in the water.
But how do you get your nose in front in the tight race for the inbox?
Stretch every element of your campaign, by, among other things, optimizing the preheader. Sidestepping common preheader text mistakes will put you ahead of the pack and hike your open rates.
First, let’s get the basics out of the way.
What is email preheader text?
The preheader is the bit of text that appears under the subject line when an email is viewed in the inbox.
Here’s an example from my inbox.
In the above screenshot, the line ‘Everybody’s doing something. We’ll do nothing!’ is the preheader.
Sometimes it’s called the Johnson Box. This refers to a snippet of copy found at the top of direct mail letters, containing the key message of the letter. Other terms used to describe it are:
Preview Text.
Second Subject Line.
Snippet Text.
Why bother with a preheader in the first place?
5 reasons why you need a preheader
1. The design of the preview pane demands it
The preview pane is structured in a way that affords subscribers a chance to get a foretaste of what a message is about.
It seeks to quickly address three crucial questions your audience might have about an email:
Who is this message from? ( Sender) Is it from a trusted sender?
What is it about? (Subject) Is the subject catchy enough?
Why are they writing? (Preheader) Is the message worthwhile?
If you are like most small business owners, your main focus is the subject line. You probably know that research shows up to 50% subscribers decide to open an email based on the subject line alone.
But what happens to the other 50%?
They linger and then look at the next component that falls within the eyeline of their reading path—the preheader. This gives you a second chance to tease users to open your email.
2. The mobile-first world reality requires it
These days most people read emails on mobile devices.
Not only do mobile users read on the move, but they also check their email 3x more than desktop users according to research conducted by Google.
Preheaders are more pronounced on mobile devices.
That’s good news.
A longish snippet text line gives you a great opportunity to expand your subject line and boost your open rates.
3. The number of preheader characters warrants it
Depending on the email client you are using, your preheader can be anything from 40-100 characters long.
That’s between 8-20 more words to support your subject line or say more about your business.
In fact, preheader text dominates your inbox.
As you can see, the preheader uses up to twice as much space than the subject line in some cases.
Surprising, hey!
Don’t let all this precious space go to waste. Use it to bolster your subject line and market better.
4. The position it occupies encourages it
Mobile users tend to do a lot of scrolling.
The preview text is visible without having to scroll.
Its strategic above-the-fold position makes it a powerful tool for engaging subscribers right off the bat before they are tempted to leave.
5. The role it plays in avoiding the spam folder
If users mark your email as spam, your emails won’t see the light of day.
Good preview text reduces spam alerts.
How?
It sums up what the newsletter is about. Once recipients appreciate the content, they won’t mark your email as spam. You’ll avoid the dreaded spam folder and increase deliverability rates.
Now that you’ve got a good handle on preheader fundamentals, let’s move on to blunders SMB marketers typically make with them.
Mistake #1: Omitting the preheader
What’s the biggest mistake can you make with the preheader?
Underestimating its power and totally excluding it.
By doing so, you miss an awesome opportunity to get more people clicking on your email campaigns. Research shows including a well-crafted preheader can boost opens by almost 7%.
Imagine the difference such a margin can make to your bottom line.
If your email doesn’t have a specially composed preheader:
Your email’s first few words may be displayed in the designated preheader space.
A default phrases like “This email was sent in HTML only, to view it please copy it into your browser” may appear.
An image’s alt-text may appear if your message contains an image.
Your code might be dragged into the preview text place.
The preheader space will showcase placeholder gibberish text like ‘Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet consectetuer’.
Talk about blowing a great chance to craft a well thought out preview text and entice more newsletter subscribers to click on your email.
Still think having a preheader isn’t a big deal?
Well, think again.
Marketing Experiments did a test to see the impact of having a preheader in an email. One email had no preheader. It simply displayed the URL of the first image in the email. Meanwhile, the treatment displayed a specific type of text.
The results were impressive: the treatment saw a huge 104% increase in clicks.
Mistake #2: Duplicating the subject line
Repeating your subject line verbatim in the preheader is a bad idea.
First, it’s just being a lazy marketer. Second, it demonstrates a lack of creativity—not a good attribute for a marketer. Importantly, readers might think you are a spammer and ban you from their inboxes forever.
Your preheader should complement the subject line, not copy it.
It should add more valuable info not contained in the subject line. Combined, your subject line and preheader should tell one complete story. Below are some quick tips on how to nail it:
Use figures to concretize the subject line.
Inject a sense of urgency by adding a deadline to your offer.
Ask a loaded question that piques your audience’s interest.
Highlight your offer’s second benefit.
Personalize the preheader if you haven’t personalized the subject.
Captivate through visually appealing emoji.
Weave fear of missing out (FOMO) into your copy.
In essence, treat your preheader like your second subject line.
Here are a couple of examples of some of the above strategies in use.
Philips Chrysler used personalization to good effect.
Source: Practical Ecommerce
Using the recipient’s name makes her warm up to the message.
Wayfair wooed their newsletter subscribers by using the clapping hands emoji.
Source: Ometria
The emoji adds a touch of color, emulates a certain feeling, and lights up the dull text.
In short, be creative not repetitive.
Mistake #3: Including unsubscribe option
Yes, you must make it easy for people to unsubscribe from your list.
And, yes, the opt-out option should be in a prominent area so people see you’ve got nothing to hide.
But the preheader might not be the best place for it.
In the example below from my inbox, the word ‘stop’ is capitalized, drawing more attention to unsubscribing than to the offer.
One moment you’re excited about saving, then in the next instant you are hit with a message telling you to pull out of the list.
Ugh.
Not inspiring for the reader if you ask me.
It kills the momentum generated by the subject line.
Why not let readers see your offer first and then give them the chance to remove themselves from your list later on inside the email?
Besides, newsletter readers expect the unsubscribe link in your footer. Seeing it much earlier can be unsettling for them.
Editor’s note:
While adding the unsubscribe link in the preheader isn’t providing the optimum experience for your email subscribers, there are times when it pays off to move this link further up in your newsletters.
For example, if you’re having deliverability problems and your emails are often marked as spam – for no good reason – then it’s worth giving your email recipients the option to opt out, instead of reporting your message as spam.
High spam complaint rate may for example be related to the local customer habits. In some markets, for example in Russia, you’ll notice that email campaigns get reported as spam more often, as the users there don’t usually trust the unsubscribe links and have become used to opting out this way.
To make sure your email deliverability is intact, follow the email marketing best practices and make your subscription process as transparent as possible.
Mistake #4: Making a whitelist request
Surely, using the preheader to ask subscribers to whitelist your brand so they never miss an email from you is a great idea, right?
Wrong.
Here’s why.
To begin with, it’s wasted effort. When was the last time you manually added companies you want to hear from to your personal address book?
Rarely, if at all.
And yet you still receive business newsletters. Here’s the thing. Inboxes have become complicated enough to detect the emails you want to receive without you whitelisting the sender.
So whitelisting isn’t the best use of the preheader.
You are better off focusing your energies on crafting an irresistible welcome email. Once subscribers engage with your first email, future emails won’t get stuck in the spam folder. Your deliverability rates will go higher.
A good welcome email:
Urges subscribers to open it ASAP.
Appreciates the subscriber for joining your list.
Sets the tone for the user’s relationship with you.
Quickly establishes rapport with subscribers.
Spells out what to expect in the coming days.
Gives instructions on how to whitelist you.
Describes who you are and what you do.
Delivers the promised information.
Since welcome emails have insanely high open rates, once you get your foot in the door you are guaranteed your audience will see forthcoming emails.
Mistake #5: Too many links
Most people read emails on mobile devices, remember?
Have you ever tried clicking a link on your phone?
It can be quite a challenge, to put it mildly. According to an MIT study, the average width of an index finger is 1.6 to 2 cm for most adults so tapping on a 12pt font can be frustrating.
It gets worse.
In a pioneering study on how users hold their mobile devices, UX Matters revealed that 75% of phone users touch their screen only with the thumb, the fattest finger.
Chances of inaccurate touches become multiplied.
As if clicking on a link isn’t bad enough in and of itself, too many links are worse because:
Readers may end up clicking on the wrong link because links are cramped. This is another reason why putting an unsubscribe link in the preheader is a bad idea.
Readers will be overwhelmed by too many choices and end up not clicking on any of the links, a classic case of analysis paralysis.
Readers might miss the link they’re interested in because it’s been cut off.
Readers may be frustrated by the bad user experience and abandon your email.
Keep things simple.
Trim the copy in your links to the barest minimum. Or, better still, avoid text-heavy links in some campaigns.
And, instead of cramping links into the preheader, try a button CTAs in the copy.
Buttons are bigger, brighter, and nicer, hence they’re more likely to be clicked.
But don’t take my word for it. Test to see which works best for your audience.
Mistake #6: No call to action
Why do you send newsletters in the first place?
To get people to act on your offers, isn’t it?
Whether you want them to try your product, enlist your services or attend your event, one thing is clear – tell them exactly what you want them to do.
Failure to include a convincing CTA is a big blunder that might reduce the success of your campaign.
Like any good result-getting CTA your CTA should be;
Clear, not clever.
Short, not lengthy.
Active, not passive.
Specific, not general.
Simple, not complex.
Cut to the chase by leading with a convincing CTA in the preheader.
Mistake #7: Making it too long
Crafting a lengthy preheader is a big mistake, and here’s why.
Your words get chopped off before you get your message across. This drastically reduces your chances of users checking out your emails. And, with most people reading emails on space-starved mobile devices, this is a real problem.
Litmus released useful research that reveals how many preheader characters popular email clients usually show on mobile devices.
Source: Litmus
To quickly get your message across on most devices before it gets truncated, aim for around 50 characters or 11 words. Since you have very little wiggle room, for best results:
Put the most important part of your message at the beginning.
Lead with an active verb that instantly grabs attention.
Turn the whole header into a CTA and take people straight to your landing page.
Get rid of filler words that take up space without saying much.
Bear in mind also that your preheader length is connected to the size of the subject line. A long subject line means a short preheader and vice versa. Play around with both until you hit the sweet spot.
Still having trouble getting the length right?
Don’t despair.
Take the guesswork out of the equation by using email header preview tools like Zurb to see how exactly your preheader and subject line will look on different devices.
Mistake #8: Preheader and subject line mismatch
If your preheader doesn’t fit your subject, you’re erring.
No matter how nice sounding your preheader is if it doesn’t expand on the subject line, it’ll fail.
A disconnect between the two is jarring for users.
Combined, the subject line and the preview text make up 58% of the first thing people look at when deciding whether to open an email.
By marrying the two so they complement each other and communicate one full story, you raise your chances of getting your email opened.
Here’s an example:
Subject: 50% off our new collection
Preheader: Save big on all latest denim jackets, jeans, and dresses for 3 days only!
The subject line introduces a massive discount. And then the preheader adds finer details about the offer by telling subscribers which items are on sale and how long the special is running for.
These specifics make the offer clearer and add a bit of urgency into the scenario.
Mistake #9: Forgetting to split test
Relying on your gut won’t get you far.
In an age of countless analytics and testing tools and toys, it’s surprising how businesses still depend on what they think will work.
Test, don’t assume.
Carry out A/B tests of your preheaders.
Try out various angles and variants of subject lines and preheaders. Keep testing and tweaking until you see a substantial uptick in opens.
Conclusion
Treating preheaders as an afterthought is a costly mistake.
Take time to carefully optimize yours.
GetResponse has a nimble preheader feature allows you to maximize your preheader with ease.
If you get it right, you’ll lure more recipients into opening your messages. More opens lead to more click-throughs. More click-throughs lead to more conversions. And, more conversions ultimately lead to more money for your business.

European companies' reluctance to offer free software and services have resulted in the region being over-dependent on US and others for communication platforms (Bert Hubert's writings)
Europe’s communication needs are currently almost exclusively delivered by Chinese hardware that connects us to US-based platforms. For a variety of reasons, this is not a good idea. As stated recently by Charles Michel, President of the European Council, “Interdependence is natural, even desirable. Over-dependence, however, is not”.
Photo by Sara Kurfeß on Unsplash At the core, the problem is that almost no consumer-oriented platforms or software products are being created in Europe, or more precisely, by European companies. Almost all software and (communication) services these days are provided (nearly) for free. The software comes with your computer, the service comes with the phone, or perhaps it is an app that costs a few euros at most. There are of course exceptions, gaming is one, but in general software and services aimed at consumers are made available without explicit payment. This includes browsers and almost all our modes of communication (email, chat, video) or collaboration (file exchange, calendaring, document editing). So why would anyone develop such free platforms? Programmers and hardware are still pretty expensive. There must be a plan. In many countries there is a deeply held belief that it will always be possible to eventually exploit users in order to make money, even if you currently aren’t yet sure how you’ll do that. Possibilities include monetizing users' behaviour, or more nefariously, once a platform is dominant, abuse its position to make other people pay up if they want to do business with your users (or simply reach them). This is called rent-seeking. As an example, Apple and Google have recently booted a large gaming company from their platform to make sure they get their 30% cut. To access Android and Apple users, you’ll have to get out your wallet. Over the past two decades, giving away free software (or running it for users as a platform) has proven to be profitable in the long run, mostly by extracting money indirectly, often through unkind or exclusionary means.
Enter Europe
European companies generally do not operate like this. For one, we lack the imagination and vision to launch something without knowing how it might eventually make money. This may be good or bad depending how you look at it. European investors specifically are much more interested in traditional business plans than US venture capitalists. “Data is the new oil” does not translate well into German, French or Spanish. In addition, with the GDPR, NIS (2) Directive & other regulations, data in Europe is definitely more “the new toxic waste”. It is in any case not a business plan. So not only do we lack the imagination to launch free platforms, the path to one day making money with them is blocked by regulation.
The result
Europe gets its “free” services from the US (and the hardware from China), and both of these countries now operate our consumer communication platforms. In addition, US companies have taken the economies of scale from consumer communications and have turned these into highly affordable business communication tooling as well (G-suite/Google Workplace, Office 365, Teams). For various reasons, handing over the vast majority of your communications to people far away is a bad idea. Notably Chinese and US laws offer no meaningful privacy protections for European citizens.
Attempted solutions
Through various kinds of regulations it has been attempted to make transferring data to countries with inadequate privacy regimes illegal. Both in theory and practice this has not worked. US stuff simply is more inviting to use - as it should be, money is being made by us using it. In earlier times, software (and communications) were far more interoperable than today. This made it possible for projects from different countries and companies to interoperate, which allowed for some competition. You could at least attempt to (re)join the party. Try “interoperating” with WhatsApp one day. Around 2007, telecommunications companies made one last attempt to take this standards based world to the Internet. The functionalities now delivered by WhatsApp, WeChat, iMessage etc were packaged up in the “Rich Communication Services” protocol suite, also known as Joyn. When launched in 2007 however, such standardised communications turned out not to be competitive with free services (for many reasons, including regulatory). So all communications are now on proprietary or exclusionary platforms – it is for example getting hard to deliver email from your own mail infrastructure without ending up in a spam folder over at Gmail. So in effect, outlawing selling our data to the US has not worked, and neither has a program of going for interoperable standards based communications – the results simply aren’t compelling enough. Something big will have to happen before we’ll be able to compete with “free” platforms from other countries.
The inevitable solution
If Europe wants to have its citizens (and companies) rely significantly on European-operated software, it has no choice but to develop better software, and to also offer that for free. The good news is: we have the talent. Tens of thousands of Europeans work for US tech companies, often from Europe even. Another problem we should not have is funding. The amounts of money involved in software development are trivial on an EU-wide scale. The EU spends several billions every year on worthy infrastructure projects like Copernicus (Climate satellites) and navigation (Galileo). Hundreds of billions are spent on research. There is definitely enough money to author things like a web browser, chat, email and video conferencing facilities. This would only require the equivalent of a few days of Corona recovery fund money. It will still cost real money though – we don’t need “government-grade” or typical clunky open source software, we need very compelling apps and services that can compete on quality. It is amazing what a billion euros could get you, with only a two-euro tax on every EU citizen! But it would deliver great things – free communication platforms that we do run ourselves, and that do not track our citizens for the benefit of foreign companies and advertisers. Note that such solutions might well be open source, and are almost guaranteed to be built on top of existing open source products. I love open source, but I am also keenly aware of the feature gap that exists between many open source products and what modern consumers and enterprises expect in terms of useability and manageability. But I’d love to open a pull request on the “EUmail” system!
The remaining challenge
Although the money can definitely be found, it is not easy for any government to support/fund innovative projects, specifically software. Public procurement is a terrible way to spend money. Otherwise useful programs like Horizon Europe are also not set up to deliver this. Consumer-facing software needs to change at a rapid clip, with several major releases every year. Current government procurement for billion euro projects would be happy to buy anything at all in a three year timeframe. H2020 funding also does not work well if you want to be dynamic about your goals. With enough political will however, it should be possible to find structures to fund European programmers to write compelling software for Europeans. Some of the recent Corona App programs may prove instructive. This might also involve things like contests or other non-traditional constructions. In this context I am particularly fond of the German Federal agency for disruptive innovation, SPRIND (“A home for people with radical new ideas”), headed by my friend Rafael Laguna. But it won’t be easy - stimulating innovation with money is extremely hard. Chances are you’ll only be stimulating existing big companies, who might not even be European.
Summarising
Europe nearly exclusively communicates through US platforms, using Chinese hardware. Interdependence is good, but this is over-dependence. The world is dominated by “free” software and platforms, for which we pay by other means (like rent-seeking and surveillance). European software companies can’t (and won’t) fund themselves this way. Our attempt to forbid foreign software from funding itself with data is worthy, but has failed to foster attractive European software. Since all communication platforms are now free, the only way to get people to use competitive European software and services is to also offer these for free, and to make sure this technology is very good and compelling. A very minor EU contribution could pay for all this. The remaining non-trivial challenge is how to turn such EU funding into quality software – existing mechanisms like public procurement and Horizon Europe are not up to the job. Read the full article

Natural Language Processing – Part 1: Building a Pre-Processing Pipeline
We can say that there is a plethora of text data generated every day. People are using many social media apps, messaging apps, and blogs on a day-to-day basis. All these applications are generating a large amount of unstructured text data. According to the 6th edition of DOMO report:
Now, you can imagine how much text data is generated every day. This brings up an important question– how do we process it and convert it into structured data?
Let’s consider that a large corporation is receiving 1000 reviews per day, and we want to analyze all these reviews because there a crucial business decision is dependent on that. Computers only understand structured data like spreadsheets. We want that computer to understand the language as we humans do, so the reviews can be analyzed very quickly. In this kind of situation, NLP comes into the picture. If we already have a trained model, then we can get an answer in minutes.
What is Natural Language processing?
“Natural language processing (NLP) is a field of artificial intelligence in which computers analyze, understand, and derive meaning from human language in a smart and useful way.”
Here are some common examples of NLP used in our day-to-day lives:
Smart Assistants
Most of us use smart assistants like Alexa and Siri that recognize our speech and give us answers based on context. NLP is used to understand the context. As New York Times article, “Why We May Soon Be Living in Alexa’s World,” explained: “Something bigger is afoot. Alexa has the best shot of becoming the third great consumer computing platform of this decade.”
Email Categorization
This is a very basic yet very useful feature of Gmail which displays our e-mails categorized into Primary, Social, and Promotions. This helps us review and respond to the important mails first. The Spam folder is also an application of NLP. Can you imagine your inbox with all emails combined to include spam and promotions without categorization?! 😂
Google Translate
When your first language is not English, this can be the most useful application of NLP. It takes text from one language as input and transforms it into the desired language using the right grammar. Google Translate supports almost 109 languages, allowing us to travel anywhere in the world without a language barrier!
How does NLP work?
As NLP gets more popular day by day, you’re probably wondering – How does NLP really work? How does Gmail categorize my emails?
“What is the matter here?”, asked the first lawyer, whose name was Speed.
In the above sentence, “The” has the highest frequency. As we understand it, “the” is just an extra word, but the computer might understand it as the most important word and conclude that the sentence is talking about ”The”. Therefore, we must teach the computer basic concepts of the English language.
This requires building a pre-processing pipeline, which is demonstrated below. (There is no specific order to follow for the pre-processing task, it is completely dependent on the Data.)
Demonstration of a Pre-Processing Pipeline
Building a Pre-Processing Pipeline
Sample Data for Coding
“COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. It was first identified in December 2019 in Wuhan, China, and has resulted in an ongoing pandemic. The first case may be traced back to 17 November 2019. As of 14 June 2020, more than 7.83 million cases have been reported across 188 countries and territories, resulting in more than 431,000 deaths. More than 3.73 million people have recovered.” (Source: Wikipedia COVID-19)
NLTK Library provides all the features for pre-processing the data so this blog references the NLTK Library. However, other Libraries can be used too.
Step 1: Sentence Segmentation
First, we need to break down the sample data into separate sentences. In the sample data, we can see that every sentence has a different context. Separating each sentence makes it easier for a computer to understand rather than having it in the form of one whole paragraph. There are many ways to separate the sentences, but the most basic method is by setting it to separate whenever it finds the punctuation mark (.).
Example:
Here, we see separate sentences as an output.
Step 2: Word Segmentation
The data has been divided into separate sentences. Now let us divide it to into words. This process is called as Word Tokenization. Word_tokenize will divide sentences into words whenever there is a space.
Example:
You will notice that the code is considering ‘.’ as one word. We will remove that in the next steps.
Now, we have sentences divided into words.
Step 3: Text Lemmatization
In English, one word can be used in many different forms like,
Look at that apple.
Look at those apples.
We can see that both sentences use one-word apple but in different ways. We want to show the root words. Text lemmatization is the process of finding most basic word in each sentence.
Example:
The above example explains what Text Lemmatization is.
Step 4: Text Stemming
Text Stemming is the process of removing the pre-fix and post-fix from words. Lemmatization and Stemming can sometimes be confusing because you could get the same output with both algorithms. The below example will help make these clearer.
You will notice that for words like ‘Driving’ and ‘Drive’, Stemming and Lemmatization both result in the same output but for ‘Drove’, it results in a different output. Lemmatization gives us the root of the words while Stemming removes prefix and postfix.
Example:
Step 5: Remove Stop words
The English language has many words that we may want to remove before performing any analysis. In NLP, these are called Stop Words.
In the NLTK library, there is a list of Stop Words, but sometimes you might want to define a list of Stop Words on your own. NLTK considers some words like “again” and “before”, and in some cases, you may not want to remove these. Here, you can define the Stop Words list.
Example:
Now, let’s write code for removing stop words. We also want to remove punctuation marks from the data.
We’ve covered each step in detail and have learned how to build a reusable pipeline. In Part 2 of this blog series, we will discuss feature extraction and building classifiers based on the data.

Why Your Email Campaign is Not Working – Causes and Solutions
While social networking may be the hottest thing in marketing, email continues to be around, and better yet, it's still running! Statistics have revealed that email has better organic reach than social networking, and readers are more likely to spend money on your own business than your networking followers. It does not mean that we're advocating pitching social media in favor of email (social media marketing still has its place and value). We have been suggesting that along with some reliable social media marketing, you may want to email marketing for your toolbox also. Obviously, despite most of the great things about email marketing, there remain plenty of causes why your emails may not be generating the results you're hoping. Whether you have been struggling with marketing for a while, or you're just starting, then here are some reasons why your email marketing may not be working: 1. Your Mailing List is Not Segmented Your subscribers have entered your subscriber list at different stages. Some users already with you, some of them joined your list in the last trade show, some signed up on the web. Of course, they get filtered. While others are just a step short of building a buy, some are getting acquainted with your merchandise. 2. You Don’t Have a Call-to-Action How will they understand what to do, if you don't suggest to your readers precisely what activity you want them to do as soon as they read your email? Email marketing is not only about providing content. Additionally, it is about inviting your readers to participate with your promotions to socialize and develop through your practice doors. That is where your call-to-action appears in. Whether it's a button or a hyperlink showing the reader to click the link to book an appointment, then" make sure every email contains another thing for your readers to move. 3. Unappealing Subject Line The common office worker transfers or receives Approximately 121 emails A day, according to a study by the Radicati Group. Outside of all these emails received, the probability of someone using a naff or cliched subject line is low. People open based on the name of the sender and the subject line, and a path often leads to low rates that are open and, in the end, obstruct the accomplishment of your email campaigns. 4. You’re Trying to Say Too Much A promotion for the importance of a yearly check-up, dental health and fitness, and some general information regarding arthritis in pets! There'll always be lots of details that you may like to get around to your readers. However, you are probably overwhelming them with advice if you are attempting to express it all at one time in one email. If you don't send out a monthly email newsletter covering each of the headlines of your practice for that month, then a good rule of thumb is to stick to a single message per email, whether that's the significance of professional teeth cleaning or your requirement to maintain Fido warm through the winter. 5. You’re not Giving Them a Reason to Open the Email What types of subject lines would be you currently attaching to your mails? Are you creating something compelling or just something mundane? If you're not tempting your emails to start with tantalizing subject lines, your emails might be sitting unopened in their inbox. 6. You’re Sending Them Irrelevant Emails Would you be currently segmenting your email lists according to what kind of pets that the client owns, although it requires just a bit of work? If you're sending emails with the content out on caring for dogs, however, the recipient owns a cat, they are unsubscribing, or a lot more prone to ignore your emails, not click in your calls-to-action. Make sure your mails are as important as possible to your subscribers by segmenting them based on a pet style. It will enable you to target distinct audiences and provide content your subscribers will need to learn. 7. You’re Landing in the Spam Folder If your emails are ending up in the junk folder, then there exists a high chance they didn't see by that your readers whatsoever. Please give a look at our site to writing compelling email subject lines to prevent becoming redirected into the dreaded spam folder. 8. Poor Email Design If your target customers lack the motivation to see your mails, there might be something very wrong with all the design, appearance, and texture of those. Savvy marketers should get an arsenal of attractive email templates, which best appeal to their target prospects. Using logos, pictures, colors, call to action buttons, and different elements should disperse nicely, and experimentation in the design must emphasize. Here are we illustrated some solutions you can Opt. for your next email campaign: i) Recognize Your Audience Figure out what kind of messages your audience appreciates. Organize your message together with your readers utilizing the hints below: Segmentation: After the first attempts, begin a survey to divide your audience into classes depending on the info that they want to receive, like new services promotional offers, and more. Use tools, for example, QuestionPro and SurveyMonkey to produce great surveys. Once you send emails that targeted, you don't just build faith but generate more clicks and conversions.Buyers Personas: Maximize conversion for your email campaigns using broad buyer personas. You can use consumer persona templates for this plan.Personalization: As shown by a Litmus Software report, personalization is one of the latest new trends in email marketing. Thus, customize your emails with behavior timing, and customer personas triggered messages. ii) Keep It Short and Sweet Readers view emails on their cellphones, which usually means you have two seconds or not to catch the audiences' attention. Interest is also lost by your subscribers if you include a lot of messages in one email and utilize a good deal of words from one note, or your email possesses a clear activity thing. Instead, keep your message short and sharp. Your target should be to get your message across in a minimal amount of words. iii) Improve the Subject Lines of Your Email Research by Experian discovered that personalized email subject lines increased open rates. According to HubSpot, subject traces that had less than 30 characters enjoyed the highest opening rates. Remember, your messages will not reach your audience if the subject line doesn't catch their consideration. To make sure your emails work better, use a subject line analysis tool such as "Subject Line” to figure out what works better for you. iv) Measure Your Email Marketing Results Always gauge the performance of your email marketing campaign. Keep an eye on stats for example: Total clicks for your email campaignNumber of unique opensUnsubscribe ratesConversion percentageNumber of clicks from individual email formats and content styles v) Make Sure Your Emails Are Mobile-Friendly Your mails should load on different screen sizes. Else, you won't ever find the success you would like to attain. You can utilize a simulator similar to Previewmyemail or EmailOnAcid to check how your messages appear on screens. It will help you avoid any mistakes. Additionally, try to balance the artwork. Remember that 88 percent of smartphone users use their device to assess emails, and that number is merely going to increase with time. Final Thoughts Like SMS lead generation, a successful email marketing effort may go a long way in helping your small organization experience development. Follow the actions given in this guide to speed the procedure for improving email marketing ROIs and conversion rates. Read the full article

Can Divorce Papers Be Mailed?
Making a decision to get divorced is not always a mutual decision. In situations where you have to deliver the divorce papers to your spouse, it can be quite a tense situation. The thought of breaking the sad news of divorce to your once trusted love of your life is daunting.
However, you do not just wake up and give out the divorce papers. This can land you to jail. It is good to read this article before you send the divorce papers. There are so many ways of sending them and one of them is mailing.
What is mailing?
Mailing is a process of sending a package via postal order or other mailing services. Mailing requires a mailing address for the sender and the receiver. There are numerous types of mailing services rendered by the United States Postal Services. A major determinant of such services is the load capacity in the deliveries. Let us look at some of the modes of services rendered by this office.
Express mail
Considered the quickest mode of mail delivery, this type guarantees swift delivery period. Most deliveries done through this method arrive before the day ends. In most parts of the nation, express mail is convenient as it also operates over the weekends and holidays.
Parcels are charged depending on their weight. Needless to say, this mode of delivery is costly compared to other modes.
First-class mail
Out of all modes of delivery, first-class mail leads in terms of popularity. It is considered all-inclusive since it facilitates the delivery of items such as ordinary envelopes, all types of cards, packages and even postcards.
However, it has its specifications regarding the size of any parcel to be delivered. Letters mailed through this mode have to have a stamp, which goes for 44 cents. Standard size postcards can be mailed at 28 cents. For the cards and envelopes, each size has its own charges. For instance, a 6 inch long card can go for 44 cents.
Priority mail
This mode of delivery consists of a single flat rate for each delivery. A flat rate simply means that the amount is fixed and constant throughout. Packages are not charged as per their weight, but rather on the type of flat rate packages which you will use to put your delivery. This method allows a maximum weight of 70 pounds.
A good thing with this method is that you have the flexibility to send several items for a single cost. Priority mail usually takes one to three days to reach the destination.
Media mail
Media can refer to any mode of relaying information. When it comes to making deliveries, media can be in form of printed music, books, videos, audio tapes in DVDs and CDs. This mode is considered profitable. However, it has its downside in that deliveries normally take a longer duration, from 2 – 10 days.
Media mail has its own specifications, like the other modes. Charges depend on the weight. There is also a restricted capacity. Packages that weigh 35 kilograms/ 70 pounds or more are not allowed.
USPS marketing mail
This is a type of mail used for the packages which do not require the other types of mail services. The package should weigh 16 ounces or less. Mailers use this method to send packages like:
Printed matter, flyers, circulars, advertising.
Newsletters, bulletins, and catalogs.
Small parcels.
The minimum quantity for sending a package via this method is 200 pieces or 50 pounds of mail. There is no single-piece USPS Marketing Mail postage. In USPS Marketing Mail, there are prices for letters, flats/large envelopes, parcels, Marketing parcels and Parcel Select Lightweight parcels.
The are other extra services that can be used with these services including: electronic USPS Tracking, bulk insurance, and return receipt for merchandise. USPS Marketing Mail, USPS Marketing Mail parcels, Marketing parcels and Parcel Select Lightweight parcels are not forwarded or returned unless you request it with an ancillary service endorsement.
Forwarding and return services may result in additional fees or postage.
International mail delivery service
There are services offered for the packages that are sent overseas. These services are expensive because of the shipping fee. The size and the weight of the package depends on the mode of shipping being used. Either by the sea or by plane.
Email
This is an electronic form of sending a mail. It is done over the internet. The sender has an address as well as the receiver. The information send through email is in form of files like images, documents, videos, as well as text. Email addresses are created under different service providers like:
Gmail
This is the best free email provider service currently. It is simple and user-friendly. It has over 10GB of free storage, it has an excellent spam filter and it also enables access via mobile access.
Yahoo
It is among the best free email services available on mobile phones and over the web. The services they offer include: instant messaging, SMS texting, social networking and email storage. A single email can occupy up to 50 files or 100MB size.
iCloud mail
iCloud takes your Apple ID to sign in that you use with your iCloud account. iCloud Mail gives you full access to your emails that include folders of Inbox, Sent, Drafts, Trash, VIP, Archive, Junk. As iCloud Mail is linked with your Apple ID, you can access to your contact list also.
Outlook.com
Thi is the reinvented hotmail. It builds off the power of outlook on PCs and Macs. its user interface is very tidy as it does not have display ads. It built up is based on the latest trends in the internet communication. You can use this email to connect to social networks, and also integrate with skydrive which helps you access office web apps for word, powerpoint, and excel
Mail.com
Mail.com offers most of the important email features that you might be thinking about. Most importantly, you can select the email domain name that will suit you best from over 200 domain names e.g. [email protected] , [email protected] etc
Can divorce papers be mailed?
The answer is yes. But you have to know which mailing method to use first. Before you embark on a specific mail, set yourself to know what you need to send and what method would be easy and cost effective for you.
You also have to consider which method is suitable for your spouse that they can receive the divorce papers in an efficient way and within a short duration. The following are the main mail methods that can be used to send divorce papers
First class mail
You can send the petition to your spouse through their postal address together with an acknowledgement form where your spouse will be required to sign, date, and send them back. If they do not return them by the specified method, you might be forced to use another method to send the papers
Certified mail
Using a certified mail requires you to send the divorce papers along with a return receipt for your spouse to sign. This return receipt is then mailed back to the sender and serves as a proof of service in court.
There are other methods of sending divorce papers to your spouse. Below are some of the methods you can use to serve divorce papers apart from mailing them.
Acceptance of service
This is where the divorce papers are delivered to your spouse by a person who is over 18 years old. This person should not be your child. Your spouse should sign and key in the date in the acceptance of service paper in order to confirm that he or she received the petition.
Personal service by sheriff
You can get a sheriff and pay them to deliver your divorce papers to your spouse. The person serving the divorce papers should fill a proof of service which is eventually served in court. This person does not have to be a sheriff. You can hire a professional process server
By publication
If all the other methods fail, the court can allow the service to be made by publication. This can be carried out by announcing the divorce petition in a newspaper where your spouse live for a certain duration of time. For proof of service, you will be required to return a copy of the newspaper notice together with a statement of how long the publication ran for.
Factors to consider before divorce papers are mailed
Before using the mail to send your divorce papers, there are factors which you have to consider. Look keenly through the factors and ensure before you send the documents, you are well prepared for the benefits and the consequences
Child custody
The law stipulates that children under the age of 18 are minors and therefore both parents must decide on their custody. There are four main types of custody that the court can grant. There is the sole physical custody in which the minor is under the supervision of one parent.
The second type of custody is the sole legal custody where one parent will make all the decisions concerning the welfare of the minor. The other type of custody is the joint physical custody in which all the parents will have physical contact with the minor at separate times.
The last type of custody is the joint legal custody in which all the parents can make decisions concerning the wellbeing of the minor.
Property settlement
Going through a divorce can be a painful and stressing at the same time. Property settlement makes it even harder. The first import thing the court is going to consider while splitting property is whether the property is communal or non-communal. Communal property refers to all the income that was earned during the marriage period. On the other hand, non-community property refers to all the assets and income earned by the individual spouse while alone.
Child support
If you are going through a divorce and there are minors involved is mandatory to include the child support clause. The support is compulsory whether the parent is unemployed or is nowhere to be found. Different states have different laws that dictate the guidelines for payments.
The settlement amount is pegged at certain levels depending on the amount of time spent with the minor and the level of income of the concerned parent. The pegged amount can include or exclude the following expenses, child care, health care and insurance, travel and visitation costs and special education and related expenses.
Spousal support/ Alimony
The other important item to consider before serving the divorce papers is the spousal support. This kind of financial support is sometimes referred to as alimony. Alimony is either based on the sole decision of the court or the agreement between the partners. The purpose of it all is to ensure sustainable income of the spouse who is not employed.
The cost
Before sending the papers to your spouse, consider the method to use. Will this method fit the size and the weight of your papers? Will the charges be pocket friendly for you? How long will it take for your spouse to return the proof of service document? These are what contributes to the costs of mailing. If you can meet the costs, then you can send them and even better of, you can choose the fastest method of mail delivery to fasten the process. It all depends on your budget
Divorce in Utah
Mailing is the most convenient way of sending your divorce papers since it does not involve other people and it is less expensive. However, you should choose your mailing method advisably and wisely. Do not just wake up in a day and decide to mail your spouse petitioning for a divorce. Have a solid reason and stand your ground. If they do not accept the divorce papers mailed to them, then use another method out of the ones listed above to serve the divorce papers.

Can divorce papers be mailed?
youtube

This method allows a maximum weight of 70 pounds.
youtube

Can divorce papers be mailed?
youtube

This method allows a maximum weight of 70 pounds.
youtube
International mail delivery service
youtube
There are services offered for the packages that are sent overseas. These services are expensive because of the shipping fee. The size and the weight of the package depends on the mode of shipping being used. Either by the sea or by plane.
