character: hi. i've been spending my entire narrative being told i'm not actually a girl, but i'm very sure that i am. the literal point of my story is that i have chosen an identity that defies other characters' impressions of me as a boy, and that identity is of a girl.
fandom: this character is nonbinary!!
other character: hey there! i actually don't have any sort of strong attachment to my gender even though i've been put under a lot of pressure to act like it, and my presentation tends to include both masculine and feminine qualities.
fandom: this character is definitely a trans man for sure.
different, third character: what's gender?
fandom: cis boy! <3
anyone: uh. so, wait, that first character is literally a trans girl?
fandom: WHY DO YOU HATE NB HEADCANONS
#i just think it's sus. that's all.#like of your options...wouldn't it make more sense to choose someone whose relationship to gender is consistent with a nonbinary headcanon?#wouldn't it actually make LESS sense to pick a character with a significant canon investment in having a specific gender?#ESPECIALLY one they have to fight for?#i mean if the idea is 'slap an identity on a character for literally no reason' i already hate that game and don't want to play#you can certainly have well-defended headcanons that are not directly supported by the text#but if you're fighting the text to specifically ERASE an identity that is literally IN THE TEXT#then like i'm sorry but to me you're no different from every character who's ever told her she's not really a girl.#rant post#kinda anyway
