Linda William's Notes:
Based on Mulvey, The “gaze” is a concept where men want to see beautiful women on screen because those men were the producers and the directors. Women are typically on display as objects for an audience, primarily men, to get visual pleasure. Therefore, camera angles were fragmented in a way that fosters over women's bodies to objectify them. I can definitely understand this concept without having to really look into it. Throughout many films, especially horror, women are either naked, dressed provocatively, and in most cases performing some kind of sex ritual in the film.
William describes how in horror films, the sexually active young teens are the characters that become the victims. It made me think why that is. I mean, most men are attractive to young females, so maybe seeing the main protagonists on the screen being objectified gives them this pornographic option. I honestly never understood why most horror films incorporated multiple sexualized females that were maybe underaged. It's creepy to me, and quite predatorial. It makes me wish the production code was still around.
Additionally, William says that most females don’t like to watch horror films, because they are presented as powerless and victimized, or they just can’t relate to the protagonist. #MeToo. Lol. When I watch most movies with a female protagonist and the main antagonist, most of the time the women are stupid. They will fall for any trick in the game, which really pisses me off. That is where I can't relate to any victim in a movie. But I can't lie; some new movies have some strong young women who beat the odds. However, most of the time the female protagonists are dumb. William also brings up a good point that a woman is either displayed as the seducer or the victim. I can bring up two movies that I've watched recently to illustrate both. Films like Scary Movie, where the woman is the stupid victim or films like the new Batman where the Catwoman is a very strong seducer. But, I feel we could all strive to be like this young girl in the movie, Run, where she is resilient in escaping an abusive mother.
