Sometimes I have a good-natured laugh over how I ship jayroy. It's either a) in an au where I fully and more importantly, willfully ignore most of the canon in order to be funny, or b) in an au where both of them are +25 years old and have their shit sorted out and where I might ignore some things because I disagree with the writing choices made by DC on a metatextual level and disregard them as incomprehensive horseshit

I know it’s been said in other reblogs, but I’m going to say it again: the movies cast great actors without ANY consideration for the characters’ ages. And therefore made it impossible to see what life stages they should have been in though I bet a fun meta could be made about how their depictions are a visual representation of Harry being an unreliable narrator as he sees them as more mature than they really are, even if that certainly wasn’t the films’ intent.

According to Wikipedia, Kenneth Branagh was born in 1960 and the second film was released in 2002. In other words, he was probably forty during the actual filming.

To be fair, Lockhart was born in 1964 so it wouldn’t have been as noticeable an age gap if the films were made during the books’ time frame.

But seriously, the weird casting in Power Rangers has messed with my head. Especially Ninja Storm. Learning just how much older Jason Chan was than his cast mates last month really came as a surprise. And now I can’t ship Tori with anybody because I found out she apparently turned eighteen during filming (that seems worrying until you remember Turbo). I just... believed the show when it implied all six Rangers were within a few years of each other. That shouldn’t have been a problem when I went to Wikipedia to look at the actors’ ages when Sally made a remark about her being a teen during filming in a special feature!! And now I’m kinda angry with myself for missing the age gaps despite knowing the show probably did its best to downplay them. I mean, the show clearly highlighted Tori/Blake as a probability, and his actor was mid-twenties at the time, so I want to blame the show for egging this sort of stuff on. Seriously, what were the writers thinking??? Wait, I don’t want to know.

I watched Ninja Storm in 2018 and completely missed it and I still don’t know why. I knew Jason was roughly a decade older, but I thought Sally was in her early twenties, not her being her character’s actual age unlike the rest of the Rangers. I just presumed that the actors are at least twenty when filming in the franchise. In another exception, apparently Time Force was basically a bunch of late teenage actors, making their great performances all the more impressive. I’d have to double-check before saying it was everybody.

I am THIS close to just shipping Cam (Jason Chan) with Kimberly (Amy Jo Johnson) to obtain a similar dynamic without any of the offscreen discomfort I now know about regarding my prior ships involving their PR characters. I checked this time and she’s about a year older. Just... let me have this as a replacement ship.

I do get why movies & shows sometimes fudge the ages, but there really ought to be a limit and if an inaccurately aged actor is the best choice, then explicitly change the character’s age. Please??? Because otherwise viewers’ perspectives on what certain ages ‘should’ look like get all out of sorts and cause all kinds of issues. And knock off the MASSIVE age gaps because they almost never imply a healthy relationship and are messing with people’s heads that they are acceptable. Sam/Jack is an outlier, not proof of an acceptable range. Media isn’t reality, but knock off the weird handling of ages because they end up causing problems and basically nothing else.

Uh, sorry for airing my frustrations, but I do have trouble guessing ages and these sorts of scenarios only make it worse. Anybody have any advice on what to do?
