Wish Songs
Ok. Let me make it clear: I haven't watched the movie "Wish" made by Disney. I'm planning on doing it, but after seeing so many reviews and hearing plot summaries (including from my best friend, Titatotrix), I'm having a hard time getting around to it. However, I'm going to do it so that I can insult this film legally.
However, as part of getting used to the idea of watching this animated crap, I started by getting to know the songs... and oh, these songs alone hurt me so much that I have to share it.
If by any chance there are Wish fans in the room, I'm sorry - but there is nothing good about this movie. Well, maybe one or two things. You'll see soon.
By the way, just by listening to the songs and analyzing the lyrics, music, framing, colours, and in combination this with the stories I listened to about the plot and the logical errors pointed out - I came up with a certain conspiracy theory (no, not that the script was written by AI, and the graphic design of the film was too - but that's a good conspiracy theory too.) However, I will present it in another entry - when I finally watch this damn movie. And for now, the songs.
---------------------------------------------
Welcome To Rosas
youtube
Oo, "The Family Madrigal" but worse. Well, the music is ok, but the whole thing is so... secondary idea. In other words, from the middle of the song, when I was just listening (not watching yet) to it, I felt like "this is the opening song, which makes a rude exposition sung by the young main character of the movie with the choir and (probably) choreography - WHAT DOES THIS REMINDER ME?".
---------------------------------------------
At All Cost
youtube
A love song at the beginning of the movie? Oh boy, one of them will turn out to be the bad guy here! (Reference to Frozen, in case anyone didn't catch it.)
This is a love song. Don't tell me otherwise. In addition, it's a very boring love song, where in the second verse (when Asha's vocals came in) I was like "is this still going on? why?". But it's a love song and it's one of Disney's worse and more boring love songs.
Wait... Isn't she minor and he isn't married? FFFFFFF!
---------------------------------------------
The Wish
youtube
Ok, this one is quite catchy and enjoyable, listening to it doesn't make me want to bang my head against the wall. Although Polish (my native) version is terrible both in terms of lyrics and performance.
youtube
Still, it's a pretty cool song that I haven't been able to get out of my head for a few days now and I've been humming the chorus. So taken out of the plot context and without the verses, it's pretty cool.
In the context of the movie, this song makes no sense at all. And I know this without even watching the movie itself - I know this from the first song, which presents Rosas as a paradise on earth. WHAT IS TO CHANGE HERE? Seriously, am I the only one who feels like the main character is a spoiled brat who's angry that she didn't get what she wanted, so now she's bitching at everyone and has to fuck something up? (But more about this when I watch the movie and write down my conspiracy theory. Wait for it :3)
---------------------------------------------
I'm A Star
youtube
This song exists. This could even be a reason to want to scratch out your own eyes 'cause they bleed anyway. Ears too.
The lyrics are so stupid that all I heard was "blah blah cute talking animals, 'cause a princess has to talk to animals".
---------------------------------------------
This Is A Thanks I Get?!
youtube
WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT?! The first lines of the text - where before was the king a self-absorbed narcissist? And what caused his reaction to the light show to be "someone is trying to betray me, so from now on I will be evil"?! Ok, this song is not only stupid, but also terribly done - in a completely different style, not keeping the atmosphere of the movie. I was counting on more songs in the rhythms of "Welcome to Rosas".
Apart from the plot - my first association: Maui and his song "You're welcome"? My second association when the chorus and choruses came on: that terrible song with reindeers from Frozen 2, which I stubbornly push out of my brain and pretend it doesn't exist. Disney, why, when you plagiarize your own works, choose something like this?
Let's get back to the plot of the song, 'cause this is where I started to wonder... Magnifico sings that he fulfilled 14 wishes in one year - how big is this damn city if he didn't exceed the limit by fulfilling 10-14 wishes a year? My point is... how many people turn 18 there every year? The city doesn't look like a metropolis with a million inhabitants! And there are quite a lot of unfulfilled wishes there! How come, I ask?
---------------------------------------------
Knowing What I Know Now
youtube
Yay! Finally! A villain song! And it's quite cool, seriously... catchy, rythmic, really nice. Although the Polish text version hurts a bit, especially with strange text connections.
youtube
Yes. This is a villain's song. And no one will convince me otherwise. Look at the colours. Look at the tone. Look at the manipulation of images and information by Asha, Star and that irritating goat. Look again at the colours. And then play "The Mob Song" from "Beauty and the Beast." I don't give a damn what the song is actually called - for me it's called "The Mob Song 2".
Don't believe me? Look at Asha's face in every other scene. This is not the face of the good character, but the face of Scar in the song "Be Prepared". Her way of scaring other reminds me of Mother Gothel from "Tangled" (Mother Knows Best). Damn, this is a villain song like no other! And I like it :3
---------------------------------------------
The Wish (Reprise)
youtube
It only exists to add choruses and 'cause they didn't feel like explaining why all these things were happening.
---------------------------------------------
Well, we've come to the end. Two relatively good songs, all the rest are autoplagiarisms or painful experiences for the ears and/or eyes.
You have the right to have your own opinion - this is mine. Please, respect it.
You can also guess from my comments what my conspiracy theory is - I honestly can't wait to present it, but this - in addition to watching this terrible movie - requires me to review a dozen other Disney films and take appropriate screenshots to my argument was coloured with illustrations. Lucky I have Disney+. Wait for this! I think it will be worth it!

~ 💖 ASK GAME 💖 ~
📷 What's set as your phone's lockscreen?
It is currently just... a totally black screen. My sensitive eyes cannot take bright lights.
🍫 Cheese or chocolate?
Cheese. Cheesey cheese cheese.
I do like dark chocolate, but it's gotta be cheese.
I should also say that neither cheese nor chocolate like me very much.
✨ Do you have any nicknames?
Had, maybe. But not really anymore!
🎵 Last song you listened to?
On Melancholy Hill by the Gorillaz
✏️ Have you ever written fanfiction?
Oh yeah, way back in the day. My first attempt was in high school, writing a Star Wars fan fiction about rogue sith who started their own clone army based off of Darth Maul's DNA.
It was absurd, but it sparked my love of writing.
😏 Are you on discord?
Nope!
💛 Do you have any piercings?
Nope!
🐰 What do you think says the most about a person?
How they answer this question, ironically. It requires them to be introspective, and it requires them to identify traits that they admire or desire in their life. How they answer this question can be very telling about who that person is.
But okay, instead of beating around the bush with meta answers, I think... how people react to adversity or stress is the most telling trait. Do they push through it? Do they express anger, sadness, or detachment? Do they lash out at those around them?
There is no end to adversity and stress. If somebody can handle and direct that pressure well, then they are better than most.
🍪 If you were a cookie, what kind would you be?
I really like oatmeal raisin cookies. Or chocolate chip! Those are my two favorite cookies. They are great!
Therefore, I would probably not be either :x
🐶 Are you more of a dog person or a cat person?
At this point, I could be either. I've lived with both. I love both.
🎧 Headphones or earbuds?
Headphones, for sure. Earbuds hurt me >:(
🌼 What's the last thing you said out loud?
"Oh shit!" (I was playing a game and I fell into a hole)
🙃 What's a weird fact that you know?
In a room of 23 people, there is statistically a 50% chance that two people in that room share the same birthday.
🦉 Are you a morning person or a night owl?
Night owl, 100%
🧸 Favorite place to nap?
In my bed?
🏳️‍🌈 Are you a member of the LGBTQIA+ community?
I'm as straight as most people, I guess. Maybe a touch of non-binary, mostly just because I find the concept of gender to be... archaic. That said, I still present as a cisgendered male.
🦋 Describe yourself in three words.
Hungry, tired, stressed
👖 Jeans or sweatpants?
Sweats, please.
🥤 What's your go-to Starbucks order?
I don't usually order from Starbucks, but I like their mocha frappuchinos.
🧡 A color you can't stand?
None! All colors are excellent (or repulsive) in different contexts.
 What's your most prized possession?
I have few possessions, all are expendable.
Okay, maybe the one thing is a book I am currently (and almost done) reading. It's really only a "prized" possession because it's given me hours of guilt-free escapism. I'll need to get a new one soon though.
☕ Coffee or tea?
Tea, but I drink more coffee, for the utility.
🦖 Favorite extinct animal?
I've always liked the idea of prehistoric giant sloths.
🌙 How long have you been on tumblr?
I don't even remember. Spent a long time away.
🌴 Desert island item?
Probably the most helpful would like... a tarp or something.
🐸 Describe your aesthetic.
Insomniac homeless hacker creep desperately avoiding eye contact
🔮 What's your dream job?
I'd still love to develop prosthetic limbs for underprivileged people. Seems... incredibly unlikely at this point, even as a hobby.
🌿 Describe your favorite outfit.
All of my outfits are some combination of a hoodie, t-shirt, and sweat pants. Mix and match.
🎤 Is there a song you know all the lyrics to?
There are many!
🤎 What color is your hair?
Black. Just black 🤷🏻‍♂️
💌 Do you talk to yourself?
Only when I'm stressed!
💄 Do you wear makeup?
Nope.
🌸 Best compliment you ever received?
Aside from the random superficial "I like your shirt/hoodie" comments?
I don't even remember the last time I got like... a genuine compliment.

Project 1: Snippets
Hooray, my first Studio Arts project! I had a great time working on this- I can't remember the last time I was so excited to work on homework.
For this project, our task was to think about weird things we've heard people say, favorite quotes, song lyrics, et cetera and create images based on those "snippets." Like the Emo trash that I am, all three of my "snippets" were song lyrics. My first one, "Is anyone there? Oh... hi," is a line from Sad Machine, my favorite song from Porter Robinson. The second, "His hair, his smoke, his dreams," is a line from Colors, my sister's favorite song from Halsey. The third, "I'm drowning in a lifeboat," is a phrase used often by death's dynamic shroud.wmv, my mom's favorite Vaporwave artist (you read that right!) I chose those lines for the second and third because I intend to give the final prints as gifts to my sister and my mom, respectively.
Here, I'll briefly break down my process for each of them:
"I'm drowning in a lifeboat"
Tumblr media
I started by creating a physical image. I sketched out the letters in pencil after very carefully drawing margin lines with a ruler. Then, I painted the letters vertically using heavy body acrylic thinned with water to make it appear like watercolor. While the paint was still wet, I photographed the page (using my hair clip to keep it from flopping over.) In Photoshop the following day, I resized and cropped the image, straightened it, added a Gaussian blur to smooth over the pixelation, then applied automatic color fixing operations.
The idea behind this image plays into my interpretation of the quote. I spent a long time painstakingly drawing out the letters and their spacing, but intentionally put very little effort into applying the paint neatly and even used the wrong kind of brush on purpose. Upon seeing this image out of context, one might think that the creator had a fair amount of skill with drawing, but next to no skill in painting. The point of all of this is to illustrate frustration. I interpret "I'm drowning in a lifeboat" to mean "I have the good foundation I need to be successful, so why am I still failing?" This image shows a good foundation in the drawn lines, but ultimately, it fails to be as neat and tidy as it set out to be.
"Colors"
Tumblr media
I happened upon a stack of very old magazines someone left outside of McMaster and decided to use them to create a collage. I cropped the images and pieces of paper by folding and tearing, I arranged them in several different ways to see which configuration looked the best, then I pasted them in place. Despite the final image being in black and white, I used blue ink to write the text as an even deeper reference to the song. Then, I photographed the page in better lighting. In Photoshop, I resized and cropped the image, added a Gaussian blur, then applied a black-and-white filter. It didn't occur to me until days afterward that I needed to cite my images, and I'd put the magazines back in the pile where I found them! Would they still be there after several days of classes and rain? I'll cut to the chase: yes, they mostly were, but I had to do a bit of reverse image searching to find all the information needed. (This was about four days ago, and I'd written much more here, including the citations, but for some reason my post edits never saved so I've had to do all of this AGAIN.)

"Sad Machine"
Tumblr media
For this one, I typed the quote into a Windows command terminal with the intent of the final image having a Vaporwave aesthetic. I tried photographing my computer screen for a more "lo-fi" look, but it looked unironically terrible and I decided to just use a screenshot. I used my computer's Snipping Tool to capture just the part that I needed, and I imported the capture into an 8"x8" blank artboard. To make the text clear and bright, I applied a very heavy-handed sharpening operation and turned down the saturation to get rid of color noise. Opening a new blank layer underneath the screencap, I created a two-color gradient and added color noise. I specifically chose to use blue with RGB values of 0, 255, 255 and magenta with RGB values of 255, 0, 255 (those colors probably have technical names that I don't know) because they're very popular in Vaporwave aesthetics and because I used those colors ad nauseam in my early days of making digital art in MS Paint and GIMP. I know that those colors don't quite print properly, though, but that's still in line with my intentions. Vaporwave aesthetics are characterized by mocking the technological ignorance of decades past and by imagery that can only truly exist on a computer. Imagine, if you will, someone amazed by the capabilities of their first home computer creating artwork to their heart's content using crazy full-saturation colors that simply cannot exist in the real world. They get their artwork printed and are disappointed in how their beautiful cyan and magenta turned out to be some sad pale blue and some dull reddish pink. And so the stark difference between the printed version and the uploaded web version of this snippet plays directly into its meaning.
