Wait, which animals raise livestock?
Several species of ants will 'herd' aphids around (a type of plant lice)- even picking them up and putting them back with the group if they wander off. The ants will attack anything that approaches their aphid herds, defending them. The aphids produce a sugary excretion called honeydew, which the ants harvest and eat.
Some ants will even 'milk' the aphids, stroking the aphids with their antennae, to stimulate them to release honeydew. Some aphids have become 'domesticated' by the ants, and depend entirely on their caretaker ants to milk them.
When the host plant is depleted of resources and dies, the ants will pick up their herd of aphids and carry them to a new plant to feed on - a new 'pasture' if you will.
Some ants continue to care for aphids overwinter, when otherwise they'd die. The ants carry aphid eggs into their own nests, and will even go out of their way to destroy the eggs of aphid-predators, like ladybugs.
--
Microhylids – or narrow-mouthed frogs - have an interesting symbiosis with Tarantulas.
While the spiders could very easily kill and eat the much-tinier frogs, and DO normally prey on small frogs, young spiders instead will use their mouthparts to pick up the microhylid frogs, bring them back to their burrow, and release them unharmed.
The frog benefits from hanging out in/around the burrow of the tarantula, because the tarantula can scare away or eat predators that normally prey on tiny frogs, like snakes, geckos, and mantids. The tarantula gets a babysitter.
Microhylid frogs specialize in eating ants, and ants are one of the major predators of spider eggs. By eating ants, the frogs protect the spider's eggs. The frogs can also lay their eggs in the burrow, and won't be eaten by the spider.
So it's less 'livestock' and more like a housepet - a dog or a cat. You stop coyotes/eagles from hurting your little dog/cat, and in return the dog/cat keeps rats away from your baby.
--
Damselfish grow algae on rocks and corals. They defend these gardens ferociously, and will attack anything that comes too close - even humans. They spend much of their time weeding the gardens, removing unwanted algaes that might overtake their crop.
The species of algae that they cultivate is weak and and sensitive to growing conditions, and can easily be overgrazed by other herbivores. That particular algae tends to grow poorly in areas where damselfish aren't around to protect and farm it.
Damselfish will ALSO actively protect Mysidium integrum (little shrimp-like crustacians) in their reef farms, despite eating other similarly sized invertebrates. The mysids are filter feeders, who feed on zooplankton and free-floating algae, and their waste fertilizes the algae farms. Many types of zooplankton can feed on the algae crop, and the mysids prevent that.
While Mysids can be found around the world, the only place you'll find swarms of Musidium integrum is on the algae farms that Damselfish cultivate.
Damselfish treat the little mysids like some homesteaders treat ducks. Ducks eat snails and other insect pests on our crops, and their poop fertilizes the land. The ducks can be eaten, but aren't often, since they're more useful for their services than their meat.
--
There are SEVERAL species of insect and animal which actively farm. They perform fungiculture and horticulture: deliberately growing and harvesting fungus and plants at a large-scale to feed their population.
Leaf-cutter ants and Termites both chew up plant material and then seed it with a specific type of fungus. The fungus grows, and the termites/ants harvest the mushroom as a food source.
Ambrosia beetles burrow into decaying trees, hollow out little farming rooms, and introduce a specific fungii (the ambrosia fungi), which both adults and larval beetles feed on.
Marsh Periwinkles (a type of snail) cultivates fungus on cordgrass. They wound the plant with their scraping tongue, then defecate into the wound so their preferred fungus will infect it and grow there. They let the fungus grow in the wound a bit, and come back later to eat.

Comforting Chris Redfield After a Mission
Chris Redfield x GN! Reader
Word count: 1075
Warnings: reverse comfort, shower, mentions of injury, infection, and bugs. Cuddles, food, mentions of first aid, mention of minor character death, angst, slight ptsd for Chris
Summary: Whenever Chris comes home after a mission he has a checklist that the two of you follow
A/N: I’m so excited to start posting about Chris! I am so excited for Death Island!
Tumblr media
You and Chris always had certain rituals for when he would leave for, and return from missions. When he left it was all about you. He would spend the few days before leaving taking you out on dates, pampering you, and running errands. As well he would pick up chores and odd jobs around the house in preparation for you taking over all of it when he was gone. He didn't always have prior warning to when he would be leaving, but he always spent whatever warning time he did have with you. When he returned, that time was for him.
The transition back to civilian life was always hard for him, it had been his entire career. Even back when he was in the air force coming back home was often more stressful than active service, but you made it easier. Much easier. Whenever possible, Chris would call you ahead of time to let you know that he was on his way. Sometimes you had days notice, other times you had just a few hours. However much time you had you always made sure that the house was clean, and usually had a meal prepared. To be honest Chris didn't really care either way about the state of the house, or the presence of a home cooked meal, but he did appreciate it greatly. It helped to free up space in his mind so that he could focus on comfort.
Once Chris was in the door you had a checklist. This was extremely important to help him with the transition. For him it was like a reset for his body and mind. That checklist went as thus:
1. A hug. Extremely important. He needed to know that you were there, that this was real, and that he was back home.
2. Food. If there is one state in which Chris can not function properly, it's hunger. Even though cold, wet, and injured he could still push through and focus on the task at hand, but if he was hungry then nothing else was going to happen until he got some food. Sometimes he would have had something on the way, but if not then you always had something ready. Eating with you also helped him ease back into a domestic mindset.
3. Shower. More than likely he had gone the entire mission without a proper scrub. There might have been running water and a bar of soap, but he had more than likely been far from the creature comforts of a hot shower, with a messaging nozzle, and moisturizing body wash with a good scrub from a luffa.
4. Body check. More often than not, you would join him in the shower for the body check, where you would meticulously search his entire body for anything. Cuts, scrapes, bruises, injuries, ticks, mites, lice, and or infections. Anything that needed to be addressed. Usually he would have been looked over by some kind of medic before he came home, so any major issues would have already been taken care of. But this was much more thorough. You were the only person he would ever let get this close. And the fact that you trailed little kisses around his body didn't hurt.
5. First aid. You had learned some first aid specifically for this. You learned to treat all sorts of minor issues. Dressing and redressing wounds, removing ticks and mites, treating infections, and you would dutifully care for any issue that arose from the body check.
6. Cuddles. It didn't matter if he came home in the middle of the day, or the middle of the night, this man is gonna need cuddles. Curl up on the couch or in bed, it doesn't matter. Depending on how the mission went and how Chris was feeling the cuddle position would change. If he was feeling more insecure and scared he would be the big spoon and hold you close, protecting you. If he was feeling more sad, and helpless he would lay on top of you, allowing you to rub his back and play with his hair. Cuddling was usually done in silence as he preferred to focus his attention on you and your breathing, but he wouldn't complain if you wanted to play some music or watch TV. The more physical contact the better.
7. Don't talk about work. During the transition back into civilian life, Chris would be very sensitive. He would be very quiet, hypervigilant, and skittish. It wasn't a good idea to talk about his mission during this time. So you two had agreed that you would wait one full day before talking about it. And you two had agreed that one full day was one wake up to the next. Which sometimes resulted in more than 24 hours before talking about his mission, but that was fine with the both of you. Even after one full day you never pressured him to talk if he didn't want to
8. Talk about work. This last step was not part of the original list. In Fact when the two of you first started doing this he hated talking about work. He would avoid talking about it at all cost, and even when he did he only gave sparse details. But as Chris has gotten older he's found that talking about work can actually be really cathartic. He now finds it important to talk to you about what happened during his time away. The good and the bad. He's gotten more emotional over the years as well. At first he tried to stop it, but you let him know that it's ok to be upset and angry, it's ok for him to cry and to shake. As he talks, you're there to guide him through his emotions, and then to bring him back to reality when he's done.
With the checklist complete you still keep a close eye on him for the next few days. He might have injuries that need to be treated, and emotional scars that need attention. You're always there helping him along his way. Eventually he settles back into normal life, and the two of you cohabitate once again.
This checklist has helped not just him but you as well many, many times. Especially after Jill's supposed death, her return, and Piers' death. But the list was put to the ultimate test after Chris returned from Romania.
To be continued…

Household Pests: Seven Tips For Getting Rid Of Them
Pest control is a topic that most people must become familiar at one point or another due to an unexpected infestation. Information is the key to managing the thorny dilemma common pests can pose. Apply the advice that follows and prepare to be victorious when confronting pests within your own home.
Having mice in your home can be a real turn off, not mentioning they carry diseases. In order to exterminate mice in a family-friendly way, use disposable mouse traps. Line the mouse traps with peanut butter to attract mice. After the mouse takes the bait, the mouse trap should slam shut, and you can safely dispose.
If you're a pet owner, your pets may be the reason pests keep coming back. Take the time to keep your pet's food bowls clean. If any water from their dish is spilled, wipe it up immediately. Store pet food in plastic containers rather than the paper bags they come in. All these things can attract bugs.
Install a cap on your chimney to prevent birds, squirrels and other nuisances from entering. Not only do these animals' nests present a fire hazard, but the critters themselves can carry lice and other parasites. The cap acts as a barricade, keeping intruders out while allowing smoke to pass through.
When it comes to eliminating pests, make sure you start this process at the beginning. If you are dealing with pest issues, try to determine and remove the factors which keep them thriving. Pests may be drawn to your house because water, food and shelter can be found there. Try to fill cracks, clean food sources and block entry to your house.
Pest likes to hide in cracks and small crevices. You should get a caulk gun and fill all the small hiding places you can find. Check for new hiding places regularly and replace the caulk if you need to. You can spray paint over the caulk if you want to conceal it.
If you want to avoid attracting small rodents, bugs and other pests, you want to be careful what you leave sitting around. Make sure that food is put away into containers and stored properly. Also make sure that crumbs are cleaned up and garbage is put away. A lack of attraction will surely keep those pests away.
Knowing how to get rid of the pests in the home will help you get these pests out of your home for good. Use them and remember them for the next time you hear the pests doing their thing. Soon, you will not have any pests getting into your cabinets because they will all be dead.

Jailhouse Rock
'Went to a party in the county jail
had an orange cellmate who couldn't make bail.
Sent out a request, asking for some money
So he could avoid being another con's honey.
Let's Rock!'
Donald, Donald, Donald. I had promised myself not to write another blog about you, but when you are searching for gold dust in the mountains and a large nugget rolls past you have to pick it up and run with it. Carpe Diem. (For those of you who were never an altar boy or didn't study Latin in school this does not mean go buy fish for ten cents.)
The Donald is angry. So angry in fact that his first thoughts upon being indicted were 'how can I make money from this? Guess what, he is. Regardless of what you think of him you have to admit he knows how to play people and pull cash out of their wallets. He could have been a very successful TV evangelist.
It's not that he won't need money. Au contraire. (wow. Three languages in one blog) Things can get pretty expensive for him where he should be going. I have taken the time to put together some of the expenses he will be facing, making cash a premium.
Conjugal visits. Based on his history this will cost him $130,000 per visit. That is for his satisfaction. If he wants to satisfy the other cellmates he can do that for free.
As an ex-president he has to have around the clock secret service people with him. He is not sure if he has to cover the cost personally for their lodgings but he figures $20 million should cover it.
To avoid head lice he will need to see a prison barber on a regular basis. I am quite positive that will also require some hush money.
Now that she is free I can see Melania running up his credit cards quite a bit.
Uber Eats and Skip the dishes will be charging a premium to get him his fix on KFC and McDonald's into the facility.
I doubt the commissary will be carrying orange dye #8 so he will need to bring in a lifetime supply.
He is accustomed to getting free pillows from that My Pillow guy and that well will run dry.
Finally, with no health care in the states he will have to pay for numerous surgeries to have all those Republican heads removed from his butt.
I am hoping he doesn't do anything stupid again so that I can go back to ignoring him but I somehow doubt that very much.
THOUGHT OF THE WEEK: To quote the theme from Barretta: 'Don't do the crime if you can't do the time...'

Since people are asking to understand the actual science and evidence behind statements like "current evidence doesn't show effectiveness of no-nit policies" here, I'm going to offer up on potential factor that I've had background conversations with other child welcfare experts about.
Someone above made a point about absenteeism and No Child Left Behind that I want to draw attention to, because while they're not *wrong* they ARE misrepresenting "combating absenteeism" as uniquely a NCLB policy priority when it isn't.
Absenteeism, particularly absenteeism originating in causes outside the child's control, is one of the leading causes of educational failure in the USA, particularly in districts that lack resource stability/are chronically underserved, districts with substantial undocumented communities, districts with high rates of environmentally caused health issues, etc. Because of how many of these same communities rely on school attendence for nutritional stability for their kids, referrals for aid or medical services, and other systems of access, absenteeism is also highly correlated with child malnutrition, early deaths of many types, and severe medical neglect.
Now, tbc, there are a LOT of ways to go about addressing this vulnerability, and I'm not necessarily commenting on this as the "right" or "best" choice, just that it is one of the more commonly available methods.
If absenteeism is already such a serious problem, it often becomes actively exacerbating of the harm to kids to implement school policies that further constrict access beyond the child's control.
Very few children will be able to successfully treat their lice without the help of an adult either in process or in purchase of supplies. To restrict children from school for lice is actually much less effective at controlling the issue (because it assumes that someone is regularly checking the kids for lice and preventing breakouts when in fact no-nit policies are break out REACTIVE not break out PREVENTATIVE) than for example creating policies and plans that PRESUME anyone could have lice and therefore potentially prevent even unidentified outbreak/infestation.
Additionally, these preventative policies, while more effective, are less easily utilized in ways that further alienate vulnerable kids from education and care.
A no-nit policy means a kid with lice whose family cannot adequately treat them simply does not get educated due to recurrent chronic lice infections. I understand that for a lot of people lice is a show up, treat, done in a week max deal. But for MANY of the kids I worked with in low income districts, lice infections were chronic, recurring, frequent, and pervasive. We had kids who would spend months withdrawn from school because of an outbreak, finally manage to get treated and re-enrolled, and less than a month later they had caught lice again. This could go on for YEARS with some kids spending more time out of school than in on lice removals alone. Switching to actual preventative policies worked wonders for them (yes, in part by addressing absenteeism. Funny how being malnourished can also make you more vulnerable to disease and parasites)
I was watching The Great the other day with my wife, and there was an episode about a smallpox outbreak that included the line "for the nobles, we try [to treat smallpox]. The serfs we burn." A character argued against this in favor of "varialation" [an early version of vaccination] for the country's poor and is asked "why? They're serfs. I don't want to die."
It's easy, at our current state of medical expertise, to assume that whatever is happening must simply be best-practice for health because why would we still be in the dark ages when we beat smallpox as a species?? But many of the ways we navigate health care, especially for the chronically underserved regions in the world, still sounds a lot like saying "the serfs we burn".
Even if we assume that no-nit policies WERE the most effective way to control nits, how many of us are actively considering our priorities in seeking the "most effective"? Much of public health policy is NOT in fact about what has the most frequent rates of success, but rather what preserves the greatest access to basic need meeting for the whole population. We OFTEN make public health policies that are "less effective" because we consider the costs of the "more effective" policy too high in terms of the harm it would have on vulnerable people in the community.
So perhaps in addition to asking if it's actually effective (it isn't, and in many ways can be worse than doing literally nothing at all by discouraging lice outbreak reporting) we should be asking if we are willing to sacrifice the nutrition, medical care, and future of the children most dramatically impacted by no-nit policies. Is that a cost we as a community are really willing to pay for a "reducing spread" of lice? No nit policies simply redistribute the risk of outbreak from effectively-served kids onto under-served kids, and taking them away may increase SOME kids time spent with lice, but not in a way that carries the lasting damage of the no-nit distribution of cost-carrying.
This kind of question comes up a lot. "What sacrifices are we accepting as reasonable for the success states we're getting?" In part because it is a question "scientific progress" really seems to dislike asking. Everything from the destruction of indigenous land for research purposes (archelogical work, research/data collection centers like telescopes and nuclear testing sites, etc). We argue that value is added, but we do so as if the cost is already inevitable. We can choose to treat costs as too high to be justified by any progress, and often do. So for whom do we make that assessment? And for whom do we decide suffering is already inevitable?
CDC voice: "I know I said we'd do something about covid if it got very high again, but we have real tough jobs to do, like removing the recommendations that children with head lice or watery diarrhea be sent home to prevent further spread of their illness."

The Importance of Professional Lice Removal Services
Head lice infestations can be a distressing experience for individuals and families alike. These tiny parasites, often found in the hair and scalp, can cause itching, discomfort, and social stigma. While numerous over-the-counter treatments are available, the efficacy of these products can vary, leading many individuals to seek professional lice removal services. This article explores why professional lice removal services are crucial, examining their effectiveness, safety, and additional benefits they offer compared to DIY treatments.
Understanding Head Lice Infestations
Head lice are tiny, wingless insects that live on humans' scalps and hair shafts. They feed on blood multiple times a day and reproduce rapidly, making infestations challenging to eradicate without proper lice treatment. Common symptoms include itching, a crawling sensation on the scalp, and visible nits (lice eggs) attached to the hair shafts.
Challenges with DIY Treatments
While numerous over-the-counter shampoos, lotions, and combs are marketed as effective treatments for lice, their success can vary widely. Factors such as incorrect application, incomplete removal of nits, and lice resistance to active ingredients can contribute to treatment failure. Moreover, chemical treatments may pose risks, especially to individuals with sensitive skin or allergies.
The Role of Professional Lice Removal Services
Professional lice removal services offer several advantages over DIY treatments:
Expertise and Experience

Navigating the world of lice removal can be overwhelming, especially when trying to understand the intricacies of lice removal price and lice removal service cost. At So Long Lice, we strive to provide clarity and affordability in addressing lice infestations, ensuring that families and individuals can access effective solutions without financial strain.
When contemplating the cost of lice removal, several factors come into play, each influencing the overall price. These factors include the severity of the infestation, the chosen treatment method, the number of individuals requiring treatment, and any additional services needed for comprehensive lice eradication.
The severity of the lice infestation is a primary determinant of the Lice removal price. Mild infestations may require minimal intervention and fewer products, resulting in lower costs. Conversely, severe infestations may demand multiple treatments and more extensive measures, leading to higher prices to effectively address the problem.
Treatment method also significantly impacts the lice removal service cost. While over-the-counter products may appear cost-effective initially, they often provide temporary relief and may not eliminate lice and nits thoroughly. Professional lice removal services, such as those offered by So Long Lice, utilize advanced techniques and products for comprehensive lice removal, ensuring long-term results despite a potentially higher upfront cost.
The number of individuals affected by the lice infestation directly correlates with the overall cost of removal. Larger families or groups may necessitate treatments for multiple individuals, increasing the total expense. However, So Long Lice offers tailored pricing packages for families and groups, making lice removal more accessible and affordable for everyone.
Follow-up care is another consideration that impacts the lice removal price. Ensuring that all lice and nits have been eradicated may require additional treatments or screenings, which can contribute to the overall cost.
