You're an og manga reader be for real, you didn't care for Levi as a character at first, right? Just curious, cause I too when I first started reading Attack on Titan, Levi honestly didn’t stand out to me much in the beginning, typical edgy side character. It wasn’t until the 57th Expedition arc that I really saw him in a new light

I actually wanted to answer this one because I found it funny. To explain my first impression of Levi’s character, we need to take a little trip back in time.

To the glorious year of 2013.

I was 14 years old, heavily into anime, and part of the Edgy group at my high school. I used to write fics on fanfiction.net for another fandom, and I was actually somewhat popular there. I was improving my English for an exchange program in England that… never happened. At the time, canon x reader fics weren’t all that common, especially in the anime fandom. Most fics of that style were for One Direction! Since I knew English, I could read the few canon x reader fics out there, so I took the trend and started writing the same concept, canon x lector, in Spanish.

ON THE COMPUTER THE GOVERNMENT GAVE ME. This is important because I got a “netbook”—basically a very tiny laptop, almost like an iPad 11' with a keyboard. Thanks to that, I could start watching, reading, and writing more, since the only other computer in the house was my brother’s, and I could only use it in “emergencies.” So yes, on a government-issued (and technically monitored) computer, I started writing and reading fics.

All my friends kept pushing me to watch Attack on Titan, which was airing at the time. Winter holidays came (July-August in Argentina), and my friend and I had a sleepover tradition to watch anime and read fics together. Back then—to show you how old I am, lol—there weren’t just “fanfic.net,” “deviantart,” or “quotev.com”; there were also BLOGSPOTS that people used like webpages to post fics. We used to participate on one that was neon pink, had a glitter kitty cursor, and posted BL fics in Spanish.

It was on that blog where my friend and I found a fic where a bunch of Attack on Titan characters moved into a cheap apartment building, only to find they were all neighbors (it was a modern AU). Nobody cared about age gaps back then, so Levi was dating Eren in the fic. And it was HILARIOUS: the building was a disaster, they spied on each other, they fought to get their money back because it was a scam… and the best part? They voted Levi to be the “Community Representative” to annoy Erwin, even though Levi didn’t want the job at all. They thought he had the perfect “shitty character” to go up against the real estate company.

So, Levi would walk into building meetings calling himself the “president” and Eren his “first lady.” The fic was SO good that my friend and I decided to check out the original anime (which was still airing at the time, by the way).

At first, from the way Levi was described in the fic, I thought he was Eren in the anime, so my friend and I were pretty confused. Then he actually appeared for the first time, and I remember thinking, “…he’s not that hot.” But then he had his first line, and I instantly fell in love. Season one ended, I needed more, and my friend and I decided to start reading the manga.

So, I’ve always liked Levi! …even back when he was just a random character in a fic that made no sense, haha. Ahhhh, those good old golden days, when I used to argue that Levi’s name wasn’t “Rivaille,” when I watched YouTube edits with “TikTok” or “Gangnam Style,” and when “snk on crack” was a thing. Smut was called “lemon” if it was explicit, and “limón” if it was just kissing. Taylor Swift had just released RED. My phone wallpaper was Levi’s dialogue to Eren in Spanish: “You have amnesia and your daddy goes missing. So convenient.” Because reading the word “daddy” was hilarious.

You had to be there to get it! I couldn’t tell my edgy friends I liked Taylor Swift because that was for the “popular girls,” and we were the edgy girls. Sigh—I was such a pick-me, insufferable teen… like all teens, lol. That’s why I always tell people to write whatever they want and enjoy it. You never know—maybe some random crack modern AU fic could lead a 14-year-old girl with no internet supervision to develop a lifelong obsession, haha.
