For the Star Trek asks:
48. Name a song or music genre you think Seven would like.
38. The La Sirena crew is thrown back in time to the Cretacious period. How do they handle it, who threatens the timeline the most, who is saddest when they have to leave, who is most knowledgeable, who stands out the most, etc.?
Send me Star Trek Asks 🖖💕✨ WHAT AN ASK! 🥳✨ Let’s start with the music one before embarking on what I can only describe as “Hey you, what if you combined your special interests? You're welcome! <3”
Name a song or music genre you think Seven would like.
If I’m being biased, I’d say Pachelbel’s Canon in D Major, because that’s what she plays on the piano for Raffi in my Saffi fic Overlap. But Seven and music is a hard one because we have so little to go on. The only time (I think) that we see her choose music for herself is in Human Error (S7E18) where the episode opens and she’s practicing the piano on the holodeck, playing Chopin's - Nocturne Op. 72 No. 1 in E minor. I’m EXTREMELY NORMAL about this choice of song. (hang on - we need visual aids…)
Tumblr media
Continued under the cut!
RIGHT. So this was composed in the early 1800’s when the piano was going from a concert instrument to something that you could own (if you were, like, extremely rich) so there was a shift in what composers were producing from stuff that could only be played by virtuosos, to music that could be played by someone recreationally as part of high society social life. Also, the sustain pedal was a fairly recent development in Piano Technology™️, so the piano could now sound smoother and the notes could blend into each other more. (Stay with me here - we’re getting to it)
LET’S LOOK AT THE NOTATION SHALL WE The piece (and the Voyager episode) open with only the left hand playing the bass clef. It’s in a minor key, so it sounds tragic and the instruction says this should be played ‘Sempre Legatissimo’ - which is SO EXTRA because ‘Legato’ is ‘the notes have no space between them’, and ‘Sempre Legato’ would be ‘there should ALWAYS be no space between notes’. But the ‘issimo’ suffix adds ‘VERY’ into this so ‘Sempre Legatissimo’ is ‘there should ALWAYS be no space between notes LIKE- NONE AT ALL BITCH- YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED’. In practice this means each note is held for a little bit longer after pressing the next one, so there’s a high degree of overlap. Under the notes we can also see ‘Ped’ and ‘*’ for when the pedal should be depressed and lifted; it’s very regular and very mechanical.
As for the melody we can see it’s labeled ‘Expressively’ and ‘<’, so played expressively, emotionally and increasing in volume. Later on the melody also has examples of contrapuntal writing, where there's more than one ‘voice’ in the melody that weaves together. (I’m getting there, I promise!)
Tumblr media
LET’S PUT IT ALL TOGETHER: We have a mournful sounding bassline that arrives first; one that is by design constant and unbroken, played as smooth and connected as possible; something which is achieved through the application of new technology used in a very regimented way. THEN after we hear this on its own, the melody comes in, very quiet but expressive and gaining in confidence, and during the piece we have that melody take on different voices but that work together (sometimes even in a major key) moving the tone from tragic to uplifting.
For me this is some BEAUTIFUL Borg/xB imagery. That baseline represents the unbroken, technologically interconnected, regimented and ultimately tragic nature of The Collective, and the melody mirrors Seven’s difficult journey to individuality. It's also interesting that Seven chooses a piece written at a period of social change in terms of the use of the piano; and specifically one where the type of music was written as something to be preformed as part of the socialising rituals of the upper classes - and in this episode she uses it as the background of her fantasy romance with Chakotay.
The fact that (even though in the episode, Seven is on the holodeck with no visible Borg implants) the ‘Borg’ part of the nocturne is played with Seven’s left (augmented) hand, while the melody is played with her ‘human hand’. This make me completely feral and leaves me wanting to chew furniture.
OK, ON TO THE NEXT ONE
The La Sirena crew is thrown back in time to the Cretacious period. How do they handle it, who threatens the timeline the most, who is saddest when they have to leave, who is most knowledgeable, who stands out the most, etc.?
First off, this question is everything! There are a few things we need to straighten out before it can be answered properly. Unlike PIC S2 I care about time travel consistency (pardon the shade) and while going from the 2400’s to the 2000’s is still a big jump, it’s nothing compared to going back millions of years. Our arm of the galaxy isn’t remotely in the same place it was during the cretaceous. Dr. Jessie Christiansen has a great video demonstrating this here.
Tumblr media
So if the Earth is at 6pm on this galaxy map, then the cretaceous period was between 3pm and 11am. To put that in Trek context:
Tumblr media
That's as far away as Earth is (6pm) from the Delta quadrant (12-3pm) That’s A Long Way.
So for this experiment, we’ll have to assume that the Sirena crew are traveling a considerable distance in space AS WELL as in time.
With that settled we’ve got to think about where they’ll go. Historically the Motley Crew end up either in France (La Barre specifically) or California. So we’ll check out both options.
In the cretaceous period the sea level was much higher, and so lots of Europe was underwater. So here’s La Barre:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Aaaaaan it looks pretty underwater in the Anglo-Paris Basin. The islands around here are full of examples of island dwarfism (with ‘regular’ dinosaurs getting smaller to adapt to less resources) but the skies had FUCKEN HUGE azhdarchids, flying around between islands and eating dinosaurs, sometimes WHOLE. Behold my ultimate fear (not the giraffe):
Tumblr media
(Illustration: Mark Witton/www.markwitton.com) ...No thank you. So how about California?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The same high sea levels that have La Barre underwater also split what will be the Americas into a collection of island continents. South East Canada and the North East of the US are in Appalachia. In the west the spine of the Rockies makes what will be the Pacific NorthWest, Mexico and Guatemala into the continent of Laramidia. Where Starfleet Academy will be (and most of California) is underwater, and even if Sirena landed on the western coast of Laramidia there would likely be some Very Steep Mountains and harsh weather as it's where the ocean meets the landmass. A better landing spot (if Rios can even land his ship - which is debatable) would be on the east of the continent. This coast bordered the Western Interior Seaway - a shallow sea that covers what will become the Great Plains.
With the ship landed… on to the actual questions!
How do they handle it? Knowing the Motley Crew… probably with a high degree of competence, with some utter idiocy thrown in. I’m imagining they’d need to figure out some sling-shot-round-the-sun-situation before its ASTEROID TIME. It would be fun if the replicators don't work and for them to have to hunt or forage food. Bonus if Emil gets to say “I’m a Doctor, not a paelo-botanist”
Who threatens the timeline the most? Probably Hugh. Either of the xB’s presumably have elements in their implants that are non-native to the planet, and that’s without considering if their nanoprobes are operational or not. Hugh’s reclamation results (and others at the BRP) seem a lot less sophisticated than Seven’s, so I’ll go with him. Can you accidentally transfer nanoprobes to a T-Rex? No one needs to find out. (A T-Rex with an eye laser would be amazing though, even if it did destroy the future.)
Who is saddest when they have to leave? Elnor for sure. He’s much more suited to the Very High Temperatures than the rest of the crew and I have no doubt that he would befriend a small hadrosaur and want to take it home.
Who is most knowledgeable? Gonna assume it’s Seven, Hugh or the Holos. It’s interesting to think what they would know about dinosaurs - our own understanding has come so far in only a few hundred years. We only got the WORD ‘dinosaur’ in 1841. Who knows what the average person in 2399 would know about the past. I’d love to know!
Who stands out the most? Well most of them are bipedal mammals (ish. Are Romulan’s mammals? Are synths-that-are-medically-indistinguishable-from-humans, mammals? If you can make mucus you can make milk, right?) so I guess they all stand out. The holo’s are another matter, because of their lack of matter! I wonder what the increased oxygen in the atmosphere would do to the refraction of the holo emitters - if they left Sirena’s door open for the breeze?
Thanks @song-spero for letting me ponder these things! I had a blast. Congrats if anyone makes it all the way to the end ;)

Fandom Asks for 2022, presuming I can remember what actually was last year
You know what, I get no asks so I ask myself because why not? If I feel like doing something then just do it. Fun can be had. There are no limits. This is my tumblr and I can ramble as I please haha.
So there were 25 questions and I'm just going to see what I feel like rambling about because I do just feel like rambling this evening. I'm having thinky thoughts about fandom because I miss it. I'm in one of those "fuck it, there's no point" kind of moods. I made plans for the year and I am doubting myself. I don't think I can do it. I don't think I have the skills or the spoons. I wasn't good at fandom shit either but hey I had the excuse that it was just for fun, so it didn't matter. I mean it mattered, and it ate at me that I was never as good as I wanted, but it didn't mean doom.
Thinky thoughts!
1) Favourite characters this year
Tumblr media
Breanna Casey - Leverage: Redemption. Now I love Leverage and I do love Redemption but the vibe is off. I can't put my finger on why but it's not quite right. I have speculated that it feels like the whole show is a bit exaggerated, like everything is cranked to eleven. However, Breanna is a delight. She is smart and sarcastic, a total nerd, I'm more Parker's generation than hers but I feel like she represents my viewpoint on the state of the world. Also she's gay and might be asexual (hello laptop sticker) and so that's even more like me.
Tumblr media
Erica Ortegas - Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. The moment I saw this character I thought I would like them. I love their haircut and their humour and they are badass and there is just never enough of them. I thought my favourite character would be Number One but might be a tie. For all that Ortegas has a criminal lack of screentime, they steal every single scene with awesomeness. Also this show is the prettiest show in the world. It looks incredible on my TV.
2) Favorite ships this year
Tumblr media
Like LOTS obviously because I am a multi-fandom obsessive but Trek and Seven and Raffi were a surprising addition. I wasn't expecting it and then bam, they have taken over my brain and hello I didn't need a new fixation but yes just think about nothing else ok? Fun fact! I actually made this gif ^^ because Saffi Prompts is something I helped organise (it's on hiatus atm) and I also put together the Saffi Bingo which didn't see really any traction at all (I sent out cards but I think I saw one fill and that's it). But hey I was all in with these guys.
What makes me so freaking sad is my list of projects for them is HUGE. Like so many drawings and I started writing fic. I have partly plotted a huge season long novel-length rewrite starting at the end of season one, and going beyond season two. I LOVE that idea so much and now I have quit fanfic it is never going to exist. It built on what season one gave us with Soji and the Romulans. Maaaaybe I might have drawn a little teeny tiny bit on Stargate but c'mon replicators and Ancients and it's too damn easy and too much fun.
Oh! Oh! And let's not forget my Raffi on Voyager. I had a crapton of notes and that was just for Seven's first season. To be fair the fic started life as just an image of them kissing in a Jeffries tube and then I gave it plot. I had thoughts and feelings and sometimes I think too deeply about certain episodes and get mad and this is how fanfic happens. Like I'm not even sorry.
I'm not sure how many thousands of words will never see the light of day. Maybe if my drawing skills improve enough I can do one of the dozen drawings I have on my list for them. At least I am still doing fandom art.
3) Favorite TV shows to watch this year
I really want to say Picard but honestly the version in my head is better. Probably shouldn't say that but honestly it was criminal what season two did to Elnor and Soji and just generally. It threw out amazing stuff from season one to focus on an "out of nowhere" storyline about Picard's mum which just ugh.
Honestly the show I have probably watched the most faithfully has been the original Leverage. It is my comfort show and I can rewatch it a bazillion times and don't care.
Tumblr media
4) Favorite books read this year
Dragon Gate! Dragon Gate!
Ok I read 42 books last year. I made a real effort. Considering a couple of years ago I probably didn't even read 1 I have come a long way. Anyway, Lindsay Buroker is who I want to be when I grow up as a writer. Rarely ever before have I read something and just wished so hard that I wrote it. Usually I don't vibe with stories that way. I can love them to death but always with an element of "but I want to fix you" but her writing style is similar enough to my own but so much more skilled that I am inspired, and motivated (when I'm not having crisis of self-faith that is) because man I want to write like that.
Dragon Gate is what happens if dragons and magic and all the fun of airships meets Stargate. When I tried to do this writing thing back in 2016 I indie published 2 novels in a series that was basically magic meets Stargate as a general description. So if I do say so myself it's a great premise. My interpretation was very different of course, I mean it started out on Earth and there were aliens but I digress.
Anyway, I'm now reading through as many of Lindsay Buroker's books as I can. Perhaps I'll subconsciously learn to write better through eagerly absorbing the words with my eyes. I mean it's not likely but one can dream.
5) Favorite song, album, or artist to listen to this year
According to iTunes Replay it was Set It Off or Linkin Park or Simple Plan or Panic at the Disco. Although I think my stats got a little warped as I decorated my house this year and my hands got paint on them. So whatever album I set to play in the morning, was repeating all day because I couldn't touch my phone.
11) Biggest squee moments of the year
You mean people don't use squee anymore? Sorry I'm a little stuck on the fact that there was an explanation attached to the question. Anyway! I have to go with a late arrival of the announcement of Jedi: Survivor because OMG I want that game so badly.
Tumblr media
After playing Fallen Order I must have googled daily for months hoping there would be some kind of confirmation of a sequel. Once that happened I think I stopped my daily googling but I kept waiting for news and now there's a date!!! (March 17th)
Honestly Fallen Order was the best Star Wars game I have played bar none because the lightsaber combat made sense. Lightsabers are one hit weapons - when they hit - and so having them whittle down a healthbar never felt good. The combat in this game is just epic. The story is great too and the characters (special shout out for BD-1). I can't wait to play more.
24) Fandom resolutions for next year
Last Question! Honestly I don't know because I don't know. Ok no that's not an answer but look I reblogged that "year of the OTP" thing and I want to do it. I have a Leverage bingo card and I have IDEAS and I want to do that. I have signed up for the Bering and Wells exchange (due February 14th) and the Bering and Wells Big Bang.
I want to do ALL THE THINGS!
But time, and spoons, and other commitments, and spoons (always with the spoons). I can't do everything and wanting to do things doesn't magically make them happen. Something has to give, something always does, and so I guess that's my resolution - to decide NOT to do things, because I actually can't do them. Which is super fucking sad by the way.
I'm not good enough. I can't do it all.
Buuuuut I really kinda want to.
It would be so freaking cool to make the projects that live rent free in my head a reality. Perhaps rephrase the resolution to something a little less miserable. Like a suggestion to pace myself, to not over-commit, to think before jumping in with both feet, to not let my single-one-track-obsessive-fixated-mind lead me down an unsustainable path.
And to stick with my resolution to quit fanfic, because burning down all my glorious plans, and opening up those documents again will not serve me longterm. However, much I wish my fanfic ideas could be made reality.

I'm sorry but I think you are missing the point of a several of those examples you just listed
First off Kirk and Spock were in the 1960s. For them to have been gay would have been unheard of, unthinkable. TOS has its issues, of course, and it doesn't hold up to modern scrutiny, but it was pushing so many boundaries at the time, especially with race, with women's rights, with social issues that weren't talked about on TV at the time
The whole point of Outcast isn't that conversation therapy works. It's that conversion therapy is bad. It's that conversion therapy is horrible and wrong. It's meant to make the viewer recoil at what happens to Soren. For the 80s/90s this would have been a very hot take and a very boundary pushing story line
Yes The Host doesn't handle the queer story line well, but that doesn't mean it was behind the times. Also, not staying with your partner after a transition is a thing that happens. People are not obligated to go against their own sexuality for a partner
Again with Jadzia and Lenara. It's the same thing as Outcast. Rejoined is an episode about how it's stupid and wrong to not let people be with someone they love. That's the entire point. There is a whole line from Kira who says she doesn't understand why they're not allowed to be together. It's not saying being gay is bad. It's saying that homophobia is bad. And it was groundbreaking. It was one of the first wlw kisses on TV. Ever. It was so controversial at the time that many places censored it. The crew received hate mail for it. It was so important to the queer people watching it as it aired. Do not ever downplay the importance of this episode
Yes, there are major issues with Kira only showing attracrion to women when she's evil, but again, you cannot separate the episode from the era in which it aired. This was the 90s. This was when being gay ruined careers. This was when few, if any, shows were even including wlw attraction. Plus, the show runners and actress have since agreed they should have done it differently. That doesn't change the fact that it was boundary pushing for its time
Sex change for comedy was again, par for the course in the 90s. That doesn't mean Ds9 was behind the times. Ds9 was always pushing the envelope, seeing what they could get away with
They played Garak gay on purpose. They wanted to do more, but were afraid they wouldn't be allowed to. And again have since said they wish they'd done more. They did what they thought would be allowed at the time. As stated above, this was the 90s. There were limitations to what was allowed. This was not a Star Trek failing. This was a network TV failing
You cannot view these things outside of their historic context. You cannot hold them to modern standards. They were not behind the times. They were at the forefront, they were addressing issues other shows wouldn't touch. Yes, they stumbled, yes they could have done better, but that doesn't mean they weren't important or progressive when they aired
(I haven't watched disco or lower decks, so can't speak to those. My only defense of Voyager again is that it was the 90s, the show was struggling, and they couldn't afford to do something controversial. Also won't even attempt to defend Enterprise lol)
This is why you should be angry at Picard, bc other Star treks did so much more for their time periods. Other star treks were breaking boundaries with social commentary. Star Trek has always been about pointing out political issues. Picard doesn't do that. Saffi is disappointing bc it isn't much better than what we got 30 years ago, and there's no excuse. All the points you listed from early trek have the excuse of being constrained by what the time period and network would allow. Picard has no such excuse
At the end of the day, I am just a straight cis girl, so take my words with a pinch of salt but everything I have learned of Season 3 Saffi so far makes it sound like the most homophobic sapphic ship in existence 💀
Like, why is Seven and Raffi's relationship still stuck in the "yeah, so we broke up" phase? Wasn't that the exact same arc of their relationship in the last season? Why are we treading the same path again? Like, I do understand on-again-off-again relationships and see their potential but this.... doesn't sound like that. This sounds more like "off again for 95% of any given season, on again at the literal last minute when the writers remember about us." Why couldn't this season have shown their relationship in a new phase? How are viewers supposed to care about a relationship if they are never seen together in the first place? Why are we supposed to be the ones to fill in the gaps instead of the writers? I have literally read fanfics with better chemistry between these two when the authors had nothing but a single scene of dialogue exchange and some (mission important) consensual hand tying to go with. And then these writers, at the end of the day, will pat themselves on the back for doing the bare minimum in "representation"

Star Trek Picard S1 Ramblings
Not that anyone from CBS will ever see this or even care if they did – once you create art you create a critic. I’m the critic and I am not a “toxic fan” for not praising every little detail from Star Trek Picard Season 1.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Spoilers<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
So ST: Picard ended its first season and I have spent the last week or so thinking over the series. There was so much and yet so little I am still finding it difficult to find the words to describe how I feel about it.
Tumblr media
Lets start with the pilot (Season 1 Episodes 1, 2 & 3.)
First and foremost, I despise 3-episode pilots. They are almost always a waste of time, and the story can almost always be condensed into 2 episodes. This was no different for Picard. I understand that this was meant to set-up the world of Picard and also allowed new fans to be introduced to the world of Trek, but it seriously delayed the plot.
I also believe that if you are new to Trek, you don’t really need a whole lot of set up. The basics can be conveyed rather easily; Picard was a part of a Space Navy called Starfleet. He lives on Earth, it’s a paradise in the 25th Century. He’s being asked for help from a stranger and that will launch him on an adventure that takes him back into space. Honestly, Trek is easy to slide into.
What could have been:
This is the part of my review where I get to Fannon my own idea’s.
Season one as it was could have been completely different and still lead into the events that we had. I would start my ret-con around the attack on Mars.
Tumblr media
Pew Pew
The Pitch: Its is only a few months before the Hobus Supernova explosion will reach the outer Romulan colonies, killing hundreds of millions. Admiral Picard is attempting to oversee the final phase of the operation when he discovers a Romulan Spy in Starfleet Ranks. He sets out on a search to discover the true identity of the spy and stop their plans to hijack the Synth construction workers. Along this adventure he meets with Dr. Soji from the Daystrom Institute – a genius cyberneticist, and his trusted friend Raffi who discover the plot may be more sinister than just hijacking of synths, and may hold a dark fate for the planet of Mars.
Episodes 1 & 2 Would be the set-up. Episodes 5 & 6 would reveal the plot about the Zhat Vash and their goals and Episodes 9 & 10 would have the Mars attack happen, reveal Soji as a Synth and the connection to Data and that he (or some part of him) may be alive.
There are things from season 1 I enjoy, though! I just feel this story was rushed and yet… so poorly executed it felt slow.
Tumblr media
Excuse me, this is my emotional support crew. Where I go, they go. #foundfamily
For Example, my Pro’s:
·      Visiting Chateau Picard
·      Ex-Tal Shiar agents working for Picard
·      Use of real-locations! Real sunlight! It felt more REAL.
·      Swearing (subversive opinion!)
·      The Archives
·      The holograms of Rio’s as the crew (And by extension the use of Holograms more freely in the Star Trek Universe)
·      Elnor. <3
·      Seven of Nine <3
·      Hugh <3
·      Picard and Hugh hugging
·      Locutus (any reference)
·      Soji’s meditation Journey
·      Soji-hulk. Soji-smash.
·      TNG REUNION!
·      7 of 9 tertiary adjunct of BORG QUEEN
·      Spot II
·      More Synths (though less than I was hoping for)
·      Synth alliance (in concept)
·      Picard flying a ship
·      Gay Seven (or, Bi? Not-straight Seven!)
Tumblr media
...My face says “where am I” and my eyes say “not a single thought has ever passed through this head”
And then there are some things that I would put on my Con’s:
·      Soji Dying so early on
·      Jurati / Maddox relationship. Gross. (age difference)
·      Far too little of my favorite Ex-Tal Shiar Romulans
·      Narek. I like nothing about him.
·      The holograms of Rios and their “backgrounds” / Accents
·      Ichebs death!!!! >:(
·      Vjayzl (Don’t know if that’s the spelling. Don’t care. She and her name were terrible)
·      The whole Stardust City episode. Ugh.
·      Narek / Soji Relation-shit
·      Riker and Troi having a dead child because ~~reasons~~ Wasn’t necessary.
·      Borg rebellion too short.
·      Dr. Alton. Should have been Maddox.
·      The flowers? Like??? ????? !!! ????!?!?!??!!?
·      Beacon = Large; shoots beams of light.
·      Tentacle porn Synths (also obvi evil)
·      Ctrl + C, Ctrl + V Starships
·      Gay Seven (or Bi?) **see below**
And that’s it I guess. Overall, if I had to score Season 1 of Picard out of 10, I’d give it a solid 6.5.
There was a lot that could have been done better, and they should have created a more cohesive story that would leave a few threads open for a renewal (before they knew they were being renewed) but have a conclusion to the main arc. The references to prior Trek were nice, but references don’t make for a good story. I hope going forward we get a more tightly bound story. And for fucks sake, someone show Elnor the damn cat! He’s waited long enough!
Tumblr media
Role model and Queen.
** Now some of you may be wondering about the Gay 7 of 9 thing being in the con’s too. Let me be clear. I am Gay, and I support the LGBTQ+ community and its representation in media. My issue is less to do with Seven being gay or bi, and more about how that was literally just dropped at our feet last minute. FIRST OF ALL, she’s clearly been eye-banging Janeway for years. Gimmie that or nothing! I’ll write v-jazzle off as rebound fuck during a rough patch with Janeway.
This part is harder for me to articulate, but I hope y’all will get the gist. Showing lesbians sharing an intimate and non-sexual moment on tv is taking the easy route. Its in the same vein at Catsuits for women on old trek. It is meant to appeal to Straight Boys. In this way, lesbians are generally more accepted than gay men. The flip side to that is, lesbians become more fetishized. That is a separate issue and another topic for another day. It deserves its own post.
If Star Trek wanted to really be more progressive, give us some more gay men in non-sexual yet intimate moments. I know we have DISCO and Staments/Culbur, but there is still such a huge stigma around gay men because TV still equates it with sex. Show me men who just like to cuddle! Get them holding hands and making heart-eyes at each other. Maybe season 2 will open up some possibilities on that front. Until then… if they majorly fuck up what they started with Saffi(Seven/Raffi?? Anyone? Is this a thing?), imma be pissed.
