“Most people just call it ‘sleeping’.”
It’s meant half teasingly, but there’s uncertainty underpinning the sentiment. Pregnancy hadn’t been easy for Madeline, and even that had seemed far less trying than her actually giving birth. Geoffrey had allowed himself to believe, in the aftermath, that the worst of it was over. His wife was alright -- in rough shape but alive and slowly but steadily recovering -- and so was his daughter.
But Madeline as a new mother has been her own force to reckon with. Even in the days of London’s epidemic he’d known her as the type to spread herself thin, work herself to the bone in pursuit of aiding others. He sees the signs of her running herself down again, but he’s finding it more than a little challenging to convince her to take a break and take care of herself. Fretting over the baby is understandable -- he’s found himself living with a new baseline of worry for the sake of this new life in his hands. But to do so at the complete detriment of herself won’t do any of them much good before long. So in a rare moment where he catches his wife dozing off in the chair set beside Aoife’s crib, he carefully slips the baby from her arms, covers her with a blanket, and makes his way quietly out of the bedroom.
When she wakes, he’s seated in the living room, Aoife sleeping soundly in the crook of his elbow while he reads a book open on his knee. He frowns when Madeline sounds distraught and insists she must have slept for hours -- glancing at his wristwatch, it hasn’t been more than a half hour since he sat down.

“You need to rest, love,” he insists gently, closing his book but not moving from his seat so as not to disturb Aoife. “You fed her right before you fell asleep, she’ll be fine for another hour or two at least.” And considering that milk isn’t her only source of nutrition, it’s not as though she’ll starve without her mother. Geoffrey cants his head towards the direction of their bedroom. “We’ll be okay -- let me take care of my girls for a change.”
