Hundreds of years in the future and thousands of light-years away, Mazu from Three-Hills practices her culture’s ancient art of sculpting spirit guides for the dead. But when technology from beyond the stars encroaches on her people’s lives—and deaths—what will happen to her art?

Personal work inspired by greatest writer ever aka Ursula K. Le Guin's short story Winter's King. You can find it in The Wind's Twelve Quarters, it's set in the same world as The Left Hand of Darkness and it's... well, brilliant, like pretty much all her writing.
“Thus, although the best known picture is that dark image of a young king standing above an old king who lies dead in a corridor lit only by mirror-reflections of a burning city, set it aside for a while.”
And then, as she often does, proceeds to break your heart.
At first, I wanted to make 3-4 illustrations for this story, but found a way to put all scenes into a single piece. And I believe that actually works better, given the cyclic nature of the story.
I'm not done illustrating Gethen. Genly Ai and Therem Harth rem ir Estraven: you are next. Once I finish the commissions I'm working on and have the time and energy for personal art, that is.

Happy Birthday to the GOAT Ursula K Le Guin, who would've been 95 today.
Tumblr media
She was one of the great American writers, along with a great feminist, anarchist, and daoist. If you've never read any of her work, I highly recommend reading The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas. It's short at 5 pages, and is a great sample of her exceptional prose and ideas:

If you want to read one of her great novels, The Dispossessed is my favorites
The last thing I will recommend is Margaret Killjoy's eulogy for her:

I still can't believe there are people who haven't watched Planetes, I can't believe there are so many of them. They don't know about that time when Claire Rondo textually, literally, led a communist revolution in space. They don't know about hating Hachimaki, understanding him, loving him, and then hating him again. They don't know about that episode that represented the crude reality of science and research in third world nations... they don't even known part of the main plot and themes is all about imperialism (not even subtext, it's explictly discussed). They don't know about Ai Tanabe, the girl who did nothing wrong. They don't know about the opening which you will sing along until you die. They don't know about that time Fee Carmichael Saved Space.
THEY DON'T EVEN KNOW ABOUT FEE CARMICHAEL PERIOD. HOW CAN YOU NOT KNOW ABOUT FEE CARMICHAEL. WHAT KIND OF SOCIETY ARE WE LIVING IN.

Sci-fi reimagining of Morgane Le Fay from Arthurian Legend! In this version, she is a cyborg rather than a fairy, and her talent for magic is instead the ability to interpret vast amounts of information.
I spent an ungodly amount of time trying to settle down on the colours.
I think I’ll try something nature-themed next. Expect lots of plants. I have three different ideas in mind right now – explorers who have stumbled upon an ancient civilisation deep in the wilderness; survivors traversing a post-apocalyptic world where nature has re-claimed everything human; some sort of clearing in a wood with fairies, except they are the original, dangerous, scary, child-stealing kind. Let’s see how this pans out, I don’t draw full scenes very often, let alone ones with dense vegetation!

Aaron Tveit is dying to work on a big Epic World building fantasy project. (16:30 interview)
Interviewer: You're great in the show [Earth Abides]. Hopefully you get a Game of Thrones style role coming your way in the future cuz I'd love to see you do it. Aaron: Thank you! Red Rising. That's the one I want to see. [laugh]
Also on portraying Charlie in new TV series Earth Abides (11:00 interview)
Aaron: I was very excited to do it. I've jokingly said to people but I'm actually serious like if could just play like Gary Oldman as bad guys my whole life, I would be so happy.
Watch full interview here. [I think this is the best interview for Earth Abides press so far.]

:)) Hello :) I am procrastinating on sleeping, so I bring more teacher AU queries
Do Fantine and Joly get along? :O
and Did R manage to get his trousers up before Javert caught him and Enj in the closet, did he get caught with his pants down a second time? 😭
eheheh ty once again Emile!! I think Fantine would absolutely adore Joly; she was so happy and jovial in her youth too, so I think she would see herself reflected very well in him 🥹 she was quite shy at first but once she learns that he was the one who finally helped Combeferre with his phosphorus experiment (😨), she was instantly like "so...I heard you have a liking for unorthodox science experiments...👀"
As for Enjolras and Grantaire....their escapade unfortunately didn't end that night 😔:

Enjolras is never PDA-ing ever again.

“When asked to “define the difference between fantasy and science fiction,” I mouth and mumble and always end up talking about the spectrum, that very useful spectrum, along which one thing shades into another. Definitions are for grammar, not literature, I say, and boxes are for bones. But of course fantasy and science fiction are different, just as red and blue are different; they have different frequencies; if you mix them (on paper—I work on paper) you get purple, something else again.”
