luke and percy character foils go CRAZY. percy is literally thinking about the gods the way luke does. where they branch off is how they execute those ideals. but everything percy has been saying these past episodes about the gods is exactly the words luke uses.

need to talk about tennis player annabeth

the game is all about strategy. know your opponent and figure out how to beat them. annabeth does that on the daily already, either in battle or sparring for practice. she's extremely perceptive and would immediately clock her opponent's quirks, maybe how their backhand is weak. and while she would still do good in doubles, I think she would really thrive in singles.

she would not play a team sport like basketball or soccer. not that she's not a team player, but she prefers only having to rely on herself and maybe one other.

she's already skilled with her hands from wielding a knife and various weapons since she was practically a baby. she'd love tricking her opponent with slices or underspin.

her reflexes are naturally quick for a demigod and she's definitely a fast runner, which would be really useful for singles where she might have to run all the way across the court.

I also think percy's brain would short circuit when he sees her in a tennis skirt

anyway I just think if annabeth ever played a sport in high school it would 100% be tennis.

annabeth and percy, and their relationship with betrayal.

annabeth convinces herself that her father once loved her. but he betrayed her when he found a new family to love. athena, who annabeth worshipped wholeheartedly. who never doubted her mother, who blindly defended her. all for athena to send monsters after annabeth because her pride was wounded. her own mother betrayed her. annabeth, who has never known unconditional love, who has only found it in luke castellan. and he is going to betray her.

percy who has had his entire world upended. he felt a sense of betrayal as his mom, the one person who loves him unconditionally, revealed his parentage. grover, the first person percy ever truly became friends with, who lied and got him kicked out of school. percy meets someone who is kind to him, and that loyalty is latched on immediately. percy, who has been told a friend will betray him. percy, who is fiercely loyal to his friends, who would sacrifice the world to save them.

percy and annabeth feel so alone. they put their faith in people who have, or who eventually will hurt them. they trust the wrong people, and because of this, they are tentative with each other. this just makes their bond all the more stronger as they realize how they truly aren’t alone when they have each other.

it's so frusturating for rick to write about percy like he's incapable of using his brain without annabeth's help. there are dozens of examples of him coming up with plans and succeeding, but are we forgetting ttc? the book where annabeth was absent for 90% of it and had percy coming up with plans on his own? alright then.

thoughts on percabeth characterization in wottg (or lack thereof)?

oh my godddddd. first of all I just have to note how hilarious it is that everyone forgot about this book a week after it came out. anyway. percabeth’s characterization in the new books versus the show versus the original books is so interesting to me. with allegedly being very involved in the writing process of the show, you’d think rick would be even more aware of how he wrote his characters and translate that to new books. now i’m not saying 17 yr old percabeth should act the same as 13 yr old percabeth. you’d think they’d grow, right? wottg percabeth just doesn’t have that spark and I was honestly confused seeing ppl gush over them in this book. every time I thought they were about to have a talk, just a moment to themselves, the scene ended. how do you set up several scenes for your fav couple and just. end it. it’s extra strange bc I loved them dearly in cotg. but in wottg,,, where’s the friendship? they remind me of those couples in school that have been together for years and don’t seem to enjoy each others company. they’re currently together because… uh…. if this was my first introduction to percabeth, having no prior knowledge of their relationship, I would question how much they even liked each other. yeah, they love each other. that’s great and all, but do they like each other? it’s like percy and annabeth became caricatures of themselves. haha percy’s dumb. annabeth has an idiot boyfriend that everyone knows she’s too good for. this is the shit you read on wattpad, not a published book. I think the worst moment of all was when annabeth seemed to realize for the first time in her life that percy was intelligent. girl you’ve known that since you were twelve fucking years old. I also think percabeth suffers in this book bc annabeth didn’t have much of anything going on. she was kinda there. percy had an emotional moment, grover had several emotional moments, but there was always prepared annabeth, ready to save the day from her helpless boyfriend and friend. rick isn’t known to write female characters well, but annabeth has mostly been the exception to that. what happened? if cotg was bad, this would be a different story. and I know pjo tumblr likes to tussle about the quality of anything written after tlo, but I genuinely really liked cotg. there was a lot of heart. the shift from a good story to the nothingness of wottg was really disappointing. I wasn’t expecting much, but, like, can rick at least pretend to try? there’s a lot more to say but we’d be here all night.
