sandra vs the DRES2 subtitles, mid 10s gay pop culture and the void *cracks knuckles*
disclaimer: i was really sure i was not going to write a dissertation this week... i was wrong
the way everyone was so sad when samantha left? i'm in p a i n even if i do agree samantha going home could be seen from miles away, i think in an overacting challenge the true unforgivable thing is being unremarkable *pointedly looks at marina and diamante*
also i will be that bitch and say it: the curse of macarena still lives but it would have lived anyway had jota been the one to leave bc they're all from the same region of spain (jota and estrella are from jerez and maca and samantha from san fernando and both of those places are in the region of cadiz in andalusia... as a curiosity, the only other queen from andalusia is carmen but carmen is from sevilla); estrella glueing her wigs w super glue of all awful things (sagittaria was reading her for that in twitter lmao literally going WHAT WAS THE REASON) makes sense bc with this track record? yes bitch i'd be terrified as well of a wardrobe malfunction
venedita being called putankhamon (pun for whore and tutanchamon) w her mummy look ep2 and iconic in this last one makes sense with my fantasy i am not going to lie to you (even if i'm still surprised she won over estrella)
when they start to dedrag and sethlas says 'a otra cosa mariposa' (to [do] other things butterfly) it's a coloquial way to say the topic of conversation is finished (the closest thing i can come up with as far as coloquialisms in english go is bob's your uncle for british)
venedita saying in the confessionals que pasará que misterio habrá is a lyric from a popular song by raphael (are you truly hispanic if you haven't had a grandmother or auntie torture you with this or with julio iglesias growing up?)
whoever is coming up with the ridiculous entrances to the workroom: que sepáis que os quiero 💞 things i need in my wardrobe: juriji's patent red boots and marina's beret and jean skirt/jacket thingie
when marina explains what happened with juri last week: there's references to donde estás corazón and aquí hay tomate which were two long running gossip tv show from the 00s
when the alarm for the rumail plays and juriji says the alarm gets her excited (cachonda) it's the same word that can be (and in fact is more often than not) used for horny and it's used very much on purpose for the double entendre; the second part of the sentence (porque eso siempre da mucho morbo) doesn't necessarily translate to get me hard but it does very much translate to gets me horny as well, we know juriji's op status as per ep1 (and that she's a self described perpetually horny bitch) but i think that translation was a little bit questionable
this week's challenge is a rusical (deluxical? supresical? i will see myself out) inspired in la llamada (lit. the call but the official name in english is holy camp!), an actual musical made by the javis that premiered in 2013 as a stage show (as a curiosity, supremme played god in the latest revival a couple of months ago) and that had a movie inspired by it from 2017 that was nominated to 5 goyas (the spanish cinema academy awards).
the movie is in netflix if you want to watch it but the gist of the argument is: two girls that have been going to the same catholic camp every summer since they were girls, directed by two nuns; a well meaning older one that wants to teach the kids at camp about faith with the help of music and an innocent novice that is a fan of the 80s band presuntos implicados with a couple of doubts about faith; the main character, one of the girls, starts to have apparitions of god... that for some reason is singing whitney houston songs, the movie lives and breaths absurdist humor but it's really cute
the guest judge of this week is la prohibida; guys, you don't understand, i have been expecting her to appear in this show since they announced season 1; she was by far the most famous spanish drag queen prior to drag race (arguably still the only one that does frequently have tours both in spain and latam w any sort of regularity even if it's now nichier to know of her and her music than it is to know about the show) and she was the most speculated person to be the host of the show besides supremme (her, supremme and pupi have been working together for a long time, but out of the three of them, she's probably the one that is better known for her singing; pupi and supremme are also singers but pupi is better known for her comedy and supremme for her hosting... out of the 3 of them she was definitely the best known overall however, even by straight people)
sharonne saying la prohibida is god on earth after cher? i concur, if you were gay in spain in the mid 10s, that is a very damn accurate assessment
alright, i think i got most of the fangirling out of my system, moving along the subs for her intro video are a bit off; she said "lo prohibido atrae and la prohibida distrae" (the forbidden attracts and la prohibida distracts); her name is literally 'the forbidden one' (or well... one of them; her character is actually named amapola lópez; amapola as a singer calls herself la prohibida... i promise to you this is actually relevant they mention amapola somewhere after this)
when the javis are explaining the parts there's changes to all of the names from the original holy camp. they make puns with all of the names from the original; la llamada turns into la llamadrag, the name of the camp is la brújula (lit. the compass) and it turns into la brujudrag, the girls' names were maria and susana and are now maricorn (obligatory maricon pun; maricon = fag, marina's character) and susanal (pun with possessive adjective of they and annal so their annal in spanish... and sucking-annal in french, thanks for that one juri, is diamante's character), the novice estrella plays was named milagros (lit. miracles, it is an actual name believe it or not, a little old fashioned but still very much in use; the diminutive is milagritos) and here it's mila (another actual name) + gritos (screams); sor bernarda played by sharonne and the founding mother played by onyx have the same names (the subs write onyx as the mother superior but it's founding mother) and instead of marina and diamante being obsessed with reggaeton and electrolatino they get in trouble for doing drag that is a bit different from the norm; and lastly the muses have the official way the franchise translates charisma uniqueness nerve and talent (which i'm a bit sad doesn't spell anything like it does in english <\3 oh well)
when they're assigning roles and diamante and sethlas both want susanal; i keep seeing them translate guarra as ill mannered and i mean... yes, but guarra is a bit more general than that (and a good deal less polite than saying someone is ill mannered); guarra is usually used for dirty/naughty and applied to people it's basically like calling them pig or slob and when sethlas agrees to take uniqueness in the confessionals she says the javis think sethlas can play the part of uniqueness, not sethlas herself (although ofc she trusts their judgement)
when jota and estrella are fighting for mila gritos... jota doesn't say estrella wants the part to annoy her, she says estrella wants the part no matter what (quiere el papel de milagritos por cojones, cojones=testicles) and when sharonne says 'estrella is a superstar' it's a bit closer to 'estrella is too much of a star' (estrella es mucha estrella; estrella = ⭐)
the joke when they introduce carlos marco, the music producer for this challenge, is that he was a singer in a boyband called auryn (which calvo claims was his own drag group)
venedita singing is the representation i deserve 💀 a round of applause for being self aware enough to recognize when you're a terrible singer lmao showing the judges vulnerability
for today's new euphemism for cock we have: sethlas singing the words bocadillos de chorizo (the subs translate it as sandwich but bocatas are made w baguettes so if anything think of it as a meat sub... i think that's explanatory enough)
when they're choreographing and calvo is giving sharonne and estrella their directions... the subs say that estrella makes sharonne nervious bc milagritos is too innocent... poner de los nervios actually is to get on someone's nerves in this context
onyx talking about going to a catholic school further proves my theory that we all share the same trauma bc i could immediately picture the nun she was playing (the representation i deserve lmao) and when juri was saying being a painting was hard she was laughing bc of the coloquial expression for looking a mess is looking like a painting
what's with the editors and the shade music effect this episode it's everywhere
when they enter the workroom the next day, jota is singing antes muerta que sencilla which is a song by maria isabel (it does mean literally what it says, I'd rather be dead than be basic, it is ofc a gay anthem)
the 'yo me he tomado tres cafés y estoy por tutearte' (I've drunk 3 coffees and I'm about to flirt with you in the subs) of sharonne and venedita; tutear would be to address informally (using tu vs using usted; not flirting unless I'm missing a reference to something there)
they hit me where i live with diamante's story, here's a fun fact for everyone that might be curious: even in caribbean countries where it's ilegal on paper to discriminate you for being gay, it's still very much done in practice both socially and institutionally, and there are quite a few countries that still have gay sex as a punishable crime in their penal code (: the DR does not have homosexuality or crossdressing punishable by law but it most definitely does not have a law to punish harassment or discrimination for being lgbt (: do not touch me (nvm adding racism and food insecurity growing up plus the whole immigration ordeal to that bc i will scream; that mechanism of defense to delete those painful things from your childhood is called trauma response, diamante)
there's been a shitton of references to los javis making calls (llamadas) to people when introducing the panel of judges... I guess this challenge makes it self explanatory lmao but it is also in a few different episodes; when ana says the most exciting call she's gotten from them has been to invite her to a party it is bc they're famous for 1) being the two gay men that are everywhere in spanish LGBT media and 2) for having everyone that is anyone in their parties and said parties being wild
alright for the actual musical:
not to be an absolute fangirl but i love you can tell the judges are usually having the time of their lives watching this cast; even with the questionable singing and diamante corpsing all way through the episode, and jota making the weirdest of faces
'what are you doing with that mustache we're not going to a party of toñi moreno' she's a lesbian tv host (the joke here is that she likes drag kings i guess)
when sharonne wakes up marina and diamante they mention torremolinos: this is a town in the south of spain very much like palm springs for drag? If you're well established (... and of certain age) you start to set camp there, it's a very common holiday destination for lgbt people
'dont pull an inti and don't pull a dovima' (for those of you watching this one that haven't seen S1; inti self eliminated herself and dovima is infamous bc she did not think of any of her looks as things she had to be able to walk in... and for not being particularly good at anything except looking pretty -It's a joke even amongst the cast-)
the black & white is an actual gay club in madrid
kika lorace is another famous drag queen (the guest of snatch game last season)
supremme de luxe in intimísimo: name of an actual show of supremme (and a ref to the fact that she constantly says she does close contact/style cabaret when she performs)
when sharonne tells milagritos to do what she did in the ele ele... the LL is another well known gay club in madrid
ritual torremolinos is a gay hotel (guess where and famous for what)
hasta luego maricarmen (see you later, maricarmen; maricarmen being a coloquial way to say maricon) is a meme bc of belen esteban (a trash tv personality and the unofficial queen of spain, when spaniards get angry online 9 times out of 10 there'll be a belen esteban meme they'll quote)
malú is a singer, and the niece of paco de lucia
when the muses tell marina she's got the potential of a star and marina asks 'bertín osborne?' bertín osborne is a singer and tv host known here from the spanish version of a singing show called stars in their eyes in the 90s
'avon llama' (avon is calling) is the slogan in spanish of the cosmetic company (is it the same in english? probably but I'm not going to look it up so i'll just write it down anyway)
gula gula is a restaurant that offers drag shows (madrid)
ana torroja is a singer; better known for being the lead singer in a band from the 80s called mecano
los presuntos implicados is another band from the 80s, they make jazz/folk/electonic music
the paraíso bath house they refer at the end of the show also exists (madrid)
the continuity error with sharonne's habit having the white collar in the final scene and sometimes not having it bothers me a lot but if anyone has ever deserved a double win it was sharonne and estrella for this challenge
marina was also just so good in this? she just shone so bright in this episode i just 🥰 and i'm obsessed that sethlas is in her platforms and she still just looks roughly around the same height as everyone else (and gorgeous although her accent and estrella's singing in english made me giggle)
okay, runway things:
when juriji is on the runway, ambrossi says loco ibiza lo comía, it's a lyric from an 80s song (literally the name of the song) and prohibida says piazza san marco in italian (she lived in italy for a while and i do know she's got at least one song in italian if not an entire album i believe); "there's too many people in versailles today" is from sofia coppola's marie antoinette (and a real life quote but my mind immediately went to the movie)
onyx comes out in a flower bud but the sub says cocoon? (as a fun fact, capullo, the word for flower bud, is also used to call someone an asshole); mr. kubrick what would you do? said by ambrossi is the name of an album by la prohibida; ana says she's margarita seispechos (six tits) in a reference to margarita seisdedos (six fingers) the mother of a spanish singer named yurena; not a clue what is this thing about a sabrina and cubans tho 1
nothing on venedita; troll-op is the perfect pun for putroll lmao (but i agree with vene; not her best look)
jota: calvo says she's from la manga (from the sleeve; a reference to la mancha... like the place in don quixote and the region of castilla la mancha); ambrossi calls her carmencita polo (carmen polo was the wife of franco and she was infamous for being obsessed with necklaces; polo is also the word of chemise in spanish); when jota is leaving calvo says eres tan travesti (you're such a queen; the name of another prohibida song.... which is actually about someone being a drag, not so much a queen which is a shame is not the translation they chose bc the pun was right there but i digress) and a few things from her confessional are not what it says in the subs (but they do mean roughly the same)
sharonne; supremme says 'oh there's feathers we love it already'; feather=camp/effeminate/very gay; trapped in her space capsule is a reference to another prohibida song (or several she's got a thing with space this is like six songs of hers as far as I'm concerned but terchová particularly if my memory isn't playing tricks on me) i loved this look so much
sethlas did that oh my god; blanca y radiante va la novia is a lyric from a song by antonio prieto; the scream of 'im getting married!' is a reference to la veneno
diamante first comes as a kinder egg (chocolate eggs w toys inside... pretty sure everyone knows them but they were banned in the us bc choking hazard so we're mentioning them); ana saying manda huevos is literally translated in the subs as throwing eggs and it basically means 'i can't believe it/bollocks!'; 'she plays with what comes out of her balls' lo que le sale de los huevos means with whatever she wants,
marina also did that; i think that calvo's commentary when she leaves the runway (rubia y criminal) is a reference for the title of legally blonde in spain (una rubia muy legal; a very lawful/law-abiding blonde)
estrella; ana starts to say gentlemen prefer them [blonde, duh] when estrella is in the gentlemen prefer blondes pink number that has been imitated to death, the second look is from the seven year itch and the last look, i thought the swimming suit was from some like it hot but some like it hot is set in the 1920s so i think it's just a generic 60s black swimming suit (could be wrong)
when estrella talks about seeing calvo in física o química (the tv show the acting challenge of season one is based on); right, i will probably go to gay hell for this but i hated that show with passion because guess who tried to make every college research paper about gay stuff and was deeply disappointed by what passed for gay representation... anyway, my personal opinion aside; física o química (physics or chemistry) was a teen drama serie that ran from 2008 and 2011 and it dealt with literally everything you could think of for the genre (relationships, sex, unwanted pregnancies, racism, homophobia, drugs, alcohol, and relationships with teachers and parents) in a very realistic manner (which includes being unable to give lgbt ppl happy endings because this is still the late 00s and nobody in that show had heard of therapy... unless ofc you mean conversion therapy) it is very beloved by the lgbt community here despite that because it is the first legitimate teen representation a lot of people had so it is a cult series (the challenge last season was not the javis going on an ego project lmao there's legitimate complains about it feeling like they're the only lgbt people that mainstream media allows bc they're in a lot of spanish lgbt content either as actors or directors or producers but they are unequivocally the gay referents for easily two generations now even if it is definitely at least not just them nowadays and they're right... estrella is now a referent for many other people as well)
i do not usually condone violence but i will say that when juriji and onyx were both in the bottom for this challenge? i was ready to throw hands 💖 there's an interview released little ago in which supremme says she had to get up from her seat in one episode to say she did really have no actual reason to send someone home bc they were all really good and she knew she and the other judges were sending people to the bottom for very tiny details (idk which episode it was she didn't say but whichever it is i hope they don't edit it out bc honestly what a mood)
when they're waiting for deliveration and sethlas realizes juri is crying she calls her chimichurri (like the food) and marina says 'por mi coño estoy en el top' the subs translate that for 'by god, i'm in the top this week', that's pretty accurate, she's swearing on her pussy though, just a note in case you were confused by the idiom
when the judges are deliverating, supremme says now that we're alone we can open the hair salon rather than the beauty parlour (bc chop chop ✂️)
when jota is gassing herself up pre lipsyncing in the confessional she says 'me la voy a comer con patatas' (lit. i'll eat her up with potatoes) it means i'll win easily (i'll eat her up/have her for lunch) not give it her all like the subs say
the song they're lipsyncing this week is la prohibida's most famous song by far, it's still played in gay clubs, there was a time i was veritably sick of hearing it everywhere i went even if it does hold certain nostalgic value for me now, my favorites of hers were always ganas de matar and mujer de bien javier calvo getting his fucking life watching them lipsync??? that was me in a prohibida concert in 2016
alright what is it about the wigs this season (and with this one we are 4 for 4 with cadiz queens having wardrobe issues... which further confirms estrella glueing her wig down w super glue might be over kill but she def has a genuine concern there)
i don't think jota being a folklorica is a detriment to her in this challenge nor in general, even if i didn't love the overacting this ep; the runway just sealed it which is a pity bc that was such a good look too it sucks it didn't work
there are literally no words for what spanish cultures owes gitanes (i might dislike the toros and flamenco stereotype but flamenco as an art form would be nothing nothing without the contribution of romani people and it should be acknowledged and celebrated) but beyond that i'll just miss her on the show period; she did announce she'll be releasing a song with la prohibida the same day after the episode went live, i can't wait to see what she does now
#i don't think i'm particularly knowledgeable about a lot of things but then dres happens and i remember i do#only it's about incredibly niche stuff#last week it was film history and this week it's me reliving my baby gay era bc of la prohibida#(this is also me evading my feelings for the day bc i was sad earlier and idk how to cope with emotions like a normal person)#drag race españa#rpdr spain#drag race espana#rpdr#rupaul's drag race#personal#sandra's translator era
