Ruby Gillman is desperate to fit in at Oceanside High. She tutors her crush in math, but he doesn’t seem interested in her otherwise, and she can’t hang out with the cool kids at the beach because her mom forbade her from ever getting in the water. One day, though, Ruby breaks her mom’s rule and discovers that she is a descendant of warrior Kraken queens and is destined to inherit the throne from her grandmother, the Warrior Queen of the Seven Seas. For eons Krakens protect the oceans from the power-hungry Mermaids. To make matters worse, Chelsea, the new popular girl at Oceanside High, is a mermaid. “Ruby will ultimately need to embrace who she is and go big to protect those she loves most.” (Universal Pictures)

Lana condor, Ruby Gillman herself, our star, turned 27 yesterday, may life bring nothing but goodwill to her from so on and so forth.

And as for Toni Collette, Agatha Gillman, aka best mom in the seven seas, happy Mother’s Day! Hope she has a great day today, and a great day every day of every year!

Finally got around to watching Ruby Gillman. From the immediately recognizable voice of narrator (and Grandmamah) Jane Fonda to the talented multicultural, multinational cast of voice actors (Trevin’s artwork is so clearly Eduardo Franco, I love it) I thoroughly enjoyed this story of family secrets, awkwardness and otherness and claiming your true identity.

The existence of several queer side characters gave me shipping hope (until the big reveal), but Ruby’s relationship with Connor is actually adorable, so I’m not mad.

Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken will be released on Blu-ray and DVD on September 26 via Universal. The 2023 DreamWorks computer-animated family action-comedy is currently available on PVOD and hits Digital on August 29.

Kirk DeMicco (The Croods) and Faryn Pearl co-direct from a script by Pam Brady (South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut) and Brian C. Brown & Elliott DiGuiseppi (Lucy in the Sky). Lana Condor, Toni Collette, Annie Murphy, Colman Domingo, and Jane Fonda star.
