wow i had no idea that was the word for it and what it was before! i have seen people taking plushies to cafés, ita bags, and other otaku activities like scrap-booking but i didn’t know that sort of thing was called oshikatsu. and i love how yumechi breaks down the word’s meaning, ‘ oshi ’ meaning bias (like one’s favourite member of a jpop or kpop group) and ‘ katsu ’ meaning activities. so cool!

I have…. so many thoughts about this as a fellow writer and I’m going to try to be concise and clear, but just know from the outset that I 100% agree with Jackie here. I’m not going to dig into what she said about her work and how it was plagiarized, if you want to know you should read her words about that and not mine…. but as a writer I can tell you that all the things she’s feeling and going through are one hundred percent true and valid. I want to speak from my own experience and I hope that helps the conversation a little, and also takes some of the heat off Jackie because genuinely in my opinion she’s getting some rude messages about this that are not deserved.

More of my thoughts about plagiarism and my own experiences as a fandom writer under the cut.

To start, if you are of the opinion that fanfiction cannot be plagiarized or fanfiction isn’t “work” or “writing”, I’m not interested in hearing your argument and my inbox is not a safe space for you to wonder about that. Please google to your heart’s content or keep that opinion to yourself, I’m not interested in debating it and your message will be deleted. Plenty of smart academic people have talked about this before and Jackie has even been so kind to point people in the right direction to do their own research. All I will say about that is this - if you think like that you are devaluing someone’s time and effort and I have no space for it.

Moving on…. if you follow this account and read my work, then you know that I’m an avid fanfiction writer for Ateez. I have written well over 300K words as a writer in this space, and spent over a year working on those fics. Into the Aurora is my longest and probably most known series or work, but I have many other one-shots and short series floating around here too. For my thoughts here, I'll mostly be referencing Aurora. I also have been writing fanfic since I was probably around thirteen, just for other non-kpop fandoms on other accounts. I love to write, I love fandom, I love shipping, and honestly it’s just fun. I can’t really draw or make video edits or do any of the wonderful things other kinds of creators can do, but what I can do and what I love to do is write. It makes me really happy to share that side of my creativity with people, and it touches me deeply that so many people have read my work and responded well.

However, please make no mistake… it is work. It’s work that I’m choosing to do, but it’s still work. Writers take a long time putting together stories and characters. I have pages upon pages of outlines, physically written sketches of the dorms, maps of plot, and hours of research poured into Into the Aurora alone. I enjoy doing it, I’m not asking for a gold star, I just say this because I want people who don’t write to understand how much time writers spend thinking about their work, let alone physically writing it, and then editing it. There is no stroke of genius that comes down and lets me just churn out a perfectly written piece in an hour or two, it’s hours and weeks and months of my life. And then, at the end of it all, we fanfiction writers post it for free. We hope that people love it, but we nervously check for criticism too, because ultimately this thing that we love and are proud of is now permanently on the internet for everyone to judge.

I’ve been very lucky with ITA and my other work, on a whole almost every message I’ve received has been kind and overwhelmingly supportive. That’s a beautiful thing and it keeps me writing. It’s brought me real life friendships, connections with other writers, and a community that to be honest I desperately needed. Any rude messages weren’t too bad, but I did receive some, and it just reminded me that my work isn’t for everyone. I’m confident enough now in my own self worth that I know that’s okay, it doesn’t mean I’m going to stop writing just because some people aren't into it.

But to be honest, the thing that makes a writer want to stop more than anything is plagiarism. I’ve never spoken about this publicly on my platform because it never felt like the right time, but if you know me very closely or if you read as much Ateez fic as I know some of you do…. then you’ll know Aurora and some of my other work has definitely been "used as inspiration". I’m not going to name those fics or tag them here, I personally don’t want to engage with that nor have I reached out to these writers directly like Jackie did, so please don’t ask me for links or names. However, if they’re reading this post as closely as they read my work… I’m sure they know who they are.

The line between inspiration and plagiarism is a blurry one, especially in fanfiction where tropes exist so prevalently... and it’s not like we’re going to go suing each other even if we could. But let’s be real…. you know plagarism when you see it. Into the Aurora is by no means an original concept, it is fully couched in a trope that people like to read. To be reductive, it’s the classic “down on her luck female MC is seen as special by group of hot/famous/interesting men and ‘adopted’ into their lives” trope. It’s no different really from all those WattPad fics people make fun of…. did my MC’s parents sell her to One Direction? No…. but is the essential idea of the MC coming to live with a band the same? Yes. That’s inspiration, utilizing a trope or concept, and it’s what almost all fanfiction is based on. I just want to be clear that I’m not pretending Aurora is some great original work of literature, but that doesn’t change the fact that it’s still mine. Using that trope is not plagiarism, and using Aurora as your inspiration for writing a polyteez fic is not plagiarism, but there have been too many coincidences in some works to call it “inspiration” just like Jackie experienced with HC.

Plagiarism doesn’t even have to be stealing language directly either (which I’ve unfortunately seen people do), it is stealing the essential parts of a work that make it what it is. For Aurora that has manifested in similar to identical storylines, MC backstory, characterizations of the boys or their relationship dynamics with the MC, structure of my posts, and/or dialogue and mannerisms. In my own experience, there have been a few of these fics floating on tumblr, AO3, WattPad etc. that are clearly taken from Aurora. When all these threads start to come together and make a work, I cannot express to you how hurtful that is as a writer. All that time and care that I mentioned suddenly is reduced. It makes it hard to publish new work or new chapters…. because if I do, will they steal that too? Negative thoughts creep in…. what if people who like my work like theirs better? Is it worth continuing? Should I say something or am I being dramatic? After all… it’s just fanfiction. But at the end of the day, it’s my life and my time and my effort, so it does matter, even if those negative thoughts sometimes say otherwise.

Ultimately, what this all comes down to is that writers, particularly fandom writers, consistently have their time, talent, and opinions devalued. The drive to write and create for free in a fandom space isn’t an ever flowing spring, writers go through highs and lows. As someone who hasn’t published anything in over two months, I can tell you right now I’m in a bit of a low. That’s okay, that’s natural, but truly one thing that never makes it easier is finding your work being plagiarized. It’s an exhausting feeling, and frankly it just hurts. I’m not sure what else to say honestly, but watching Jackie field so many messages about this I couldn’t just sit here quietly.

Speaking for myself only, I’ll say this. If you love my work, thank you so much. If you draw inspiration from my work or the way I write, I’m beyond flattered and I am so happy you also feel the pull to write. We need more writers in this fandom, it’s fun and I’m so happy to have more work to read and more people to talk to. If you draw more than inspiration from my work, please know that I am aware of it. I read a lot of fanfic in this fandom, and I promise you that even if you don’t see me liking or interacting with your work, I’ve seen it. I don’t want to talk about it with you, I don’t want to debate, but please know that it’s not an okay thing to do and it doesn’t feel good or flattering, it hurts.

Jackie did the hard thing of saying no. She set a boundary and tried to handle things quietly and privately, but ultimately the record should be set straight. As a writer on this platform, I just want to lend my voice to the conversation to say that she’s absolutely correct and has every right to feel the way she’s feeling or respond in the way she’s responding or not responding. If you want writers like Jackie, and myself, and many, many others to keep producing work, please treat us with respect, I think that’s all we’re asking for.

As I sit here writing this, my heart is racing and my hands continue to shake. I am devastated. My heart is filled with anxiety. I have been made to feel guilty for being plagiarized.

But I think it’s fair to be honest with myself, and with all of you.

As for the recommended shoujos, I highly suggest Kimi ni Todoke, Kaichou wa Maid-sama, Bokura ga Ita, and Lovely Complex! Those are all older shoujos but to me that's like the golden age of shoujos 2000s-2010s, now a days we don't get many new good ones but luckily next year is looking so good!! there's already gonna be 3 manga adaptions of shoujos in Janurary and Feburary (they are The Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague, Yamada-kun to Lv999 no Koi wo Suru, and A Galaxy Next Door!) ((im definitely checking them all out)) and Ouran Highschool is such a classic I highly rec finishing that one!

omg ugh, if I had the money for fashion I would 10000% dabble in k-fashion!! I just love how fashionable their outfits are while at the time looking for fancy, clean, fresh! Cardigansssssss yes yes yes, if I also had more of those I'd be drenched in cardigans but I wear a lot of hoodies during the colder months! omg yesss k-fashion beauty is so pretty but also so expensive (for good reasons haha). i also love hoodies during winter!! they are so comfy and warm and i always wear them at home :D omg yes fall is a wonderful season too, it's the perfect balance between warm and cold. although in my area, it gets super cold in the morning and then gets warmer at night, so it's the opposite from you!! i always dress warmly when i go to work and then end up suffocating from the heat later on in the day >_<

hi hi, it's your secret santa! 🎁 the week is basically the start of the holiday season for many people, so i hope no matter if you celebrate that you can cherish the this time and can at least round out the season and the year in your own way of celebration, may it be fun or communal or restful (or all of it!) <3

i just love hearing you talk about the shows you love, that's why asking you questions and reading your answers is so much fun! kinnporsche also got me in all its messy, sometimes weird, sometimes boastful, always a lot of fun and action and emotional glory! vegaspete has something to it that is so compelling, i so agree with you, and just to see the dynamic play out was quite the journey. they really put all the tropes in one basket and said, let's just see where this gets us at the end of the day (and somehow it worked and i think it's in no small part to the actors too) ... and vegas deffo had it all from his hannibal lecter moments to getting a tray to the head and somehow finding love at the end as well. whew. that really was a show.

hello again stranger! 💕 yeah crimbus is breathing down my neck and i’m so stressed out lol. it’ll all work out somehow. also the moon sickness is upon me and it’s REALLY wringing me out. bleh. 

i’m glad you like my ramblings! i’m not very good at meta or anything, but i do love to run at the mouth about stuff i love. yeah, i was not expecting to love kinnporsche but then vegas and his good hair and blousy shirts and pathetic tendencies bewitched me and now i’m a mess. i indulged in a bunch of spicy vegaspete fic over the weekend because i deserved a treat. 

i do! i love nct! they’re my first kpop group, really. i’d managed to outrun the kpop wave for a long time, but then one day i was on here and a gif was on my dash, and i was like, “WHOMST IS THIS???” and a helpful anon informed me that it was taeyong from nct and their video for “make a wish”. i finally remembered to check it out a few weeks later and.........i haven’t been the same since lol. i also love monsta x (i saw them on tour earlier this year), exo, shinee, and bts.
