Enlightenmonth - Day 1-4: Friends/Family

Summary: Koushirou has gathered the courage to ask Hikari the question of questions - and is now facing the task to ask the other Yagami sibling an equally important one.

„She’s really rubbing off on you, isn’t she? Actually going home early? Who are you and what did you do to the real Koushirou?”

 Koushirou couldn’t help but snicker at that commentary coming from the door of his office; Taichi was leaning against the frame all casually, waiting for his friend, work partner and future brother-in-law to pack up his things.

 There was something soothing about the scene as well as his words, Koushirou thought – or rather, he tried to convince himself of that.

 “I just thought it’d be nice to re-establish an old tradition”, he replied while shouldering his bag. They had been working on another presentation for a meet-up with the Japanese government, combining Koushirou’s most current research results on distortion tracking with Taichi’s recently conducted speech on “Benefits of positive promotion of Digital gate switching”.

 In order to celebrate the finalization of their presentation, Koushirou had decided to invite Taichi to an after-work “beverage of choice”.

 That had been his official wording at least, not mentioning the fact that there had been something else he had wanted to get off his chest…

 “Oh, does that mean it’ll be your treat tonight?”, Taichi grinned while they left the office, stepping down the stairs of the office building. “Just like the old days?”

 Another snicker – there used to be a time when they had gone out on late(r) night “dinners” much more frequently during their early days of university, eating and drinking out together with Yamato and Sora. Quite a while ago…

 “Well, your paycheck should look a lot more comfortable than it did ten years ago…”, Koushirou teased back, causing Taichi to clutch his chest as if to pretend to have gotten shot.

 “Oooof, that hurts.”

 “But… I guess it’s the least I can do. And it really has been a while.”

 Especially since he had proposed to Hikari a few weeks ago, after they had been together for over five years now. Taichi had been noticeably quiet since then – neither in the working nor in the usual bickering department, that was for sure. However, they hadn’t talked much about the engagement and Koushirou couldn’t prevent himself from wondering why that was the case.

 Due to his relationship with Hikari, he had grown even closer to the entire Yagami family throughout recent years, which was a change he had thoroughly welcomed, now that they were in their early thirties, more settled, more ready to focus on other things in life than just work and Digital World affairs.

 It hadn’t been easy, especially in their early twenties, when Taichi had begun to distance himself from basically everyone around him, including Koushirou – and it had taken a while for him to figure himself out again, daring to face his inner demons and allowing himself to open up to his loved ones again.

 Koushirou had been thankful for that – between trying to figure out how to get their Digimon partners back and falling head over heels for the sister of his best friend, it had been hard to reconcile. And even though Taichi hadn’t exactly given him the impression that he was somewhat disapproving of him dating Hikari… Koushirou simply couldn’t shake the possibility that Taichi deliberately avoiding the topic now was a sign of him closing himself off again…

 “Come on, what’s up?”, Taichi interrupted his thought process, making him realize that he must have been silent for a while himself now. “Something’s on your mind, isn’t it? Spill it, you’re an honorary Yagami now after all.”

 Twilight had emerged already and Koushirou took a look at the purple sky over Odaiba, taking a deep breath. If only they had already been at the restaurant, maybe he could have used the additional time to collect his thoughts a bit better.

 Koushirou Izumi was an honest person – heck, he could be incredibly blunt, even painfully so, when things were urgent, when he had to make use of his problem solving skills, facing illogical and difficult circumstances. Sharp, analytical, precise.

 Nevertheless – when it came to his own feelings, regardless of how “illogical and difficult” they were, being honest was a lot more tricky. And in moments like these, he hoped that Hikari had actually been rubbing off on him. It had taken him months of preparation, tons of encouragement from Tentomon, several re-written proposals (and unused date-ideas by Mimi) to ask her the question of questions.

 Her brother was an entirely different story right now.

 “… Then you should know that, as an honorary Yagami, I do need to collect my own courage here and there.”

 The words came out all naturally and he saw Taichi hesitating before opening the door to their favourite restaurant.

 “Huh? That’s not like you at all though?”

 There was a certain glimpse of worry in his voice and Koushirou didn’t like that – he had heard the same tone coming from Hikari countless times before, whenever he had been pulling allnighters or had – subconsciously – forgotten to eat properly. All those bad habits he had to face and fight, all the little steps he had to take towards opening up himself. For the sake of the people he loved and adored – and wanted to protect.

 “…. And I like you better when you yell at me for misusing the goggles or bluescreening your computer.”

 However – it was funny how easy it was for both Yagami siblings to make him smile and forget all his grim thoughts.

 “You haven’t done that in years, so it doesn’t count”, he grinned, feeling a bit more light-hearted and so he went past Taichi through the door, straight to their usual spots, waiting for him to follow.

 “You know what? You’re right, there’s no further need to dance around the topic any longer…”

 Sitting at the table now, facing each other, waiting to order the first drink for the night, Koushirou looked straight at those hazel eyes in front of him, expecting him to spill the beans.

 “Yeeeeah?”

 Another deep breath followed, anticipation clearly audible in Koushirou’s voice when he finally made his proposal – the second one this year:

 “Taichi-san, may I ask you to be my best man?”

 Taichi just blinked a few times – then he sank deeper into his seat, sighed a deep sigh, followed by a bright grin of… Relief?

 “… That took you waaaaay too long, man.”

 “It was harder than asking for Hikari-san’s hand, to be honest”, Koushirou replied as if he was on autopilot, as these words were the ones he had been meaning to say for, indeed, way too long. Granted, he had been a million times more nervous when asking Hikari to marry him – but at least he had been more secure about her answer.

 Which seemed to baffle Taichi just as much as it had him, as his eyes had just widened significantly before he eventually cried out loud:

 “What?! Why, what did I do? Did you actually think I’d say no?!”

 “It was at least a valid possibility in my head!”, Koushirou returned in the same manner, feeling cornered and even a little embarrassed – no matter how often he had been playing the potential conversation in his head, he couldn’t get around explaining it in a satisfying way. “You have been rather non-talkative about the whole topic and even though… I do know you’re not opposed to your sister becoming an Izumi, I couldn’t be a hundred percent sure you wouldn’t say no.”

 “That doesn’t make any sense?!”, Taichi barked and Koushirou wished for a waiter or waitress to come to their table and give him some space to sort out his thoughts. Taichi on the other hand seemed very eager to get this straight – and suddenly, it bursted out of him completely: “Wait a minute, I sure as hell hope for you that you’re not holding me accountable for something I said, like, twenty years ago?! Man, I was twelve, I wouldn’t have let ANYBODY marry my sister, you should KNOW that!”

 That statement made Koushirou blush even more in embarrassment – he couldn’t deny that a certain conversation had played a role in his thought process. Way back then, it had been a harmless joke between their friends right after they had left the Digital World for the first time, with Mimi having brought up the possibility of any of the Chosen Children dating each other. One of those possibilities had been Hikari ending up dating Koushirou – and even though he hadn’t even considered actively confessing to anyone at that time, a simple statement made by Jyou had been stuck in Koushirou’s head ever since:

 “Wait a minute! If Hikari-kun was with him, you’re gonna end up being his older brother in the future, Taichi!”

 “If that happened to me, I’d refuse!”, Yamato had snapped, causing Taichi to get all heated up and sour:

 “Hey, are you picking a fight or somethin’?! Anyway, whatever. I wouldn’t allow their relationship anyway.”

 “I am well aware that it sounds silly, that’s why I needed to clarify!”, Koushirou eventually confessed, silently cursing his splendid memory. This was not how he had wanted this exchange to go, even though he should have been able to predict it…

 Leaning back into his chair, Taichi sighed once again, shaking his head.

 “Koushirou, look. Our mom has accepted you into our family way before you and Hikari were even a thing and, honestly? If you hadn’t picked her, mom would probably have made me propose to you, just to have you as a part of the inner circle, I swear.”

 Hearing that, now it was up to Koushirou to blink at Taichi; he had always been aware that Yuuko was doting on him, but he definitely hadn’t expected her to be that… Committed. Even more surprising to him was the fact that Taichi’s voice had calmed down more and more while elaborating; genuine eyes were facing him, giving him an expression of openness, amusement and… Warmth.

 “Needless to say that I couldn’t ask for a better brother than you. In my book, you’ve always been an honorary Yagami, no matter what I may or may not have said when we were kids or whatever has happened years ago. Even if Hikari will take your name in the end.”

 There it was again – the Yagami way, never failing to make Koushirou smile.

 “That was incredibly cheesy, Taichi-san”, he said, a gentle laugh escaping his own throat, taking all the heaviness with it.

 “Oh shut up, you’re the one who made this a problem in the first place! I was afraid you’d ask Mimi-chan or Sora or even Takeru to be your best man or woman or… Whatever…”

 “Did you really?” Koushirou’s smile widened; if he read in between the lines correctly, Taichi’s main worry seemed to have been that Koushirou wouldn’t have picked him as his first choice. So the reason why he had been quiet about everything was probably that he had felt… Left out. Now he felt even more silly – they had never been the best at talking about their feelings with each other, but all of this was almost too ridiculous to be true. “Takeru-kun is already occupied as Hikari-san’s secondary bride’s maid, right after Miyako-kun.”

 “I guess I should have seen that coming, huh?”

 The smile simply refused to vanish from Koushirou’s lips now; Hikari had encouraged him to finally ask Taichi, pushing him to take the step himself… Now he was pretty much certain that she had just intended to nudge him towards losing all his second-guessings with “exposure therapy”. And she had probably known all along – proving once again that he had placed his affections correctly.

 “Taichi-san, I always intended to ask, it couldn’t have been anyone else but you, so I shouldn’t have… Doubted.”

 “Glad to hear that”, Taichi chuckled, finally waving at a waitress passing by. “Soothes the fatal wound a bit.”

 “I’ll make it up to you, I promise.”

 “So… Your treat then?”

 Never before had Koushirou craved for a drink more than in this moment. Not to play down any uneasiness or cover up the silence – but to truly and genuinely celebrate the occasion with his future brother-in-law.

 “Definitely my treat then.”

IT'S TAIORA TIMEEEEE!!

honestly i want to keep this on my draft a little longer (*cough* maybe i can save it for taiora week *cough*), but @dutchforstrangers gave me some encouragement to let this out a bit faster... so here it is.

remember when i said on my koukari mixtape that my playlists are gonna be messy in terms of the storyline? well, this is the messiest. i think i kind of overthink this playlist because i want it to be perfect. it's my ultimate otp after all. i really hope this turns good.

two of the songs are already included in @patamonn's mixtape post, which you should all check it because bree's works are awesome. aside lynn, i want to dedicate this playlist to my sora sister @sorasfishing! i hope you keep thriving in anything you do and don't forget to get some rest :D (although this playlist is more up to beat and not really suitable for leisure time lmao) (well, taiora's the kind of couple who's full of spirit anyway)

01. wonder - shawn mendes

i was struggling to find a way to start this playlist. most songs i had gathered somehow would sound better if i put them in the middle. this song suddenly appeared on my suggestions and i remembered the first time this was released, i... didn't really like it lmao.

but now i love it so much. the music is majestic and very... taichi-like, if i can put it that way. the last beat of the drums sounds adventurous and seems like a good prologue for a journey ahead.

and yeah, what better way to start other than our main guy wondering what it's like to be loved by the beautiful lady who owns the sky?

02. used to you - mxmtoons

i was thinking of two mxmtoons songs for the playlist: either this song, or falling for u. although falling for u sounds more fitted to the theme of "realising you have feelings for your best friend but too afraid to tell him" (you should totally listen and check the lyrics here), i settled on used to you because of two reasons. first, the music of falling for u is too cozy for this rather rock playlist.

second, for me, used to you has a more... personal touch? i mean i can put falling for u for a takari playlist and it'll still be a good fit, but used to you is more of a taiora song. in the official commentary, the song is told to be about the turbulence of a new relationship. but in my point of view, this could be about how sora became too used to taichi's presence.

the first verse is somewhat a description of sora's insecurity. as she grew up, she wanted to become a better part of society (that was why she turned to tennis, dressing more femininely...). this kind of thought is a bit overwhelming, and knowing sora, of course she would overthink them. since 02 did taiora very dirty we never knew how taichi really felt about these changes and i am pretty sure that sora actually wanted to know his opinion because he knew her the best.

move on to the chorus: "i've been spending all my time, sitting by the phone just waiting for a call. i used to wanna be alone 'til your name was in my phone, now i'm getting kinda used to you." look, i still believe that sora's an introvert. but if taichi called her, she'd be there in a heart beat. (also, think about that scene in tri where she got so stressed with taichi informing his soccer game a little too late. bet she'd been waiting for him to invite her from the very beginning.)

03. you're the best thing about me - u2

this is just a general love song, but the line "i'm the kind of trouble that you enjoy" is very cheeky i can imagine taichi saying it to sora with so much confidence.

04. beautiful to me - olly murs

if you're listening to this playlist on spotify, i will kindly suggest you to switch momentarily to youtube because for this specific song, you have to watch the music video so you can get a more taiora vibe.

the video is about two childhood friends that always there for each other but never really talks about the feeling until one of them is almost getting married. get it? (although yeah, the girl is more of a badass than sora and the boy is too aloof as taichi's counterpart.)

the song itself is just the singer trying to convince the girl that she is beautiful no matter what. i always feel like sora has a lack of confidence about herself, so this is taichi pulling her into a realisation.

05. thunder - boys like girls

this is a tribute to our war game (a.k.a. THE PEAK OF TAIORA CINEMATIC UNIVERSE), especially the dub version with that "you say you love thunderstorm." i think when you look at the chorus of this song, you'll get it why i put the song here.

06. she is love - parachute

i have to choose the full band version because the og version is too slow. the title seems to be... a description of sora? i mean she IS love, right? :p but yeah, i think this song is an illustration on how sora will still take taichi despite his recklessness.

spoiler alert: one of my digiweek submission will be taiora with this song :p

07. built to last - mêlée

i was in doubt whether i had to put this song on this playlist, but the line "you are the sun in my universe" convinced me. also, "all of our friends saw from the start, so why didn't we believe it too?"!? gee. everyone saw it, you two. you are meant to last indeed.

08. best friend - rex orange county

okay, this is the part where everything gets a bit... bittersweet.

picture this: sora gets a boyfriend. idc who the boyfriend is, but it's definitely not taichi. this is the perfect song because taichi will surely regret why he didn't confess to sora earlier. still, he wants to be her favourite boy no matter what. even the part when the singer says "but i still wanna break your heart and make you cry" is just taichi's way of joking.

09. give me a try - the wombats

this is actually my favourite song on the playlist and funnily, i found this song accidentally when i first built this mixtape. we can ignore a rather "miserable side" of this song and just take this song as taichi's way of convincing sora that they could be such a fantastic pair together.

also, on a separate note, there's a long distance relationship theme implied in this song. i never really explore this theme, but i always wonder how married!taiora will make their marriage work because taichi will surely travel a lot with his job as diplomat.

bonus tracks: i love you - billie eilish

it took a long time for me to finally decide to put this song. i want the closure to be very slow and solemn, because most of the songs in this playlist have been very upbeat. i realised that most songs are in taichi's pov, so i thought about searching a song from sora's pov.

i was thinking about gabrielle aplin's please don't say you love me. however, the tempo was still too fast somehow, and i got the impression that the girl in the song wouldn't let the relationship between her and this particular man to be more than just friends. and there's no way i let this playlist to end like that. enough with taiora not being canon.

this billie eilish song should be listen as a company to two other songs, and if you listen to all of them together, it's actually a pretty depressing storyline (maybe triggering, so i suggest not to google if you don't feel comfortable). however, if you listen to i love you as a stand-alone song, i think it can still be a good fit.

quoting from one source, this is a song about "something that happened near the beginning of a romantic relationship, but a little bit after a friendship." i think this song can be interpreted as sora's reaction when taichi finally CAME TO HIS SENSE confessed to her. her first thought would be he was joking ("maybe won't you take it back? say you were tryna make me laugh"). sora's the type who concealed her emotion, so to hear the words as blatant as "i love you" would make her very vulnerable.

yet the song ends with a realisation that she also loved him. and that is why i put an ellipsis on the lyrics above: i want to leave my playlist for an open ending!

(but if it were up to me, i'll surely put a happy ending for them ;>)

Fanfic recommendations!

Like the things I write? You’ll love the things @lightchildofthespring writes! She’s been going through a stressful time lately and it’d be wonderful if you showed her support. Especially since she’s such a fantastic writer! Here are my favorite short stories by her.

Sorato fanfiction

Eternity - 1,500 words. If you are a fan of Sorato, or if you really love Sora and Yamato’s characters, you MUST read “Eternity.” It is one of my two favorite one-shots in the world. It reads like a fairytale. The story is all about why Yamato loves Sora so much and there’s a beautiful metaphor that I don’t want to spoil. "Eternity” is written in English and Spanish.

Majestic - 1,200 words. “Majestic” is the first story I read by Koukacs, and it gave me a marvelous first impression of her. Apparently she dashed it off in one afternoon. It complements “Eterinty” very well, as it shows how Yamato is able to support Sora when she needs it. "Majestic” is written in English and Spanish.

Jyoumi fanfiction

Koukacs is the queen of Jyoumi, as they are her OTP. Which shows her impeccable taste. Her love for Jyou and Mimi always shines through.

Starting line - A collection of seven drabbles about Jyou and Mimi as they begin a romantic relationship in college. I love them all.

The dance - 695 words. Just my guess, but this MIGHT be the Jyoumi drabble that Koukacs is proudest of. Or maybe it’s the one that I’m just proudest of her for writing.

Smiles - 1,000 words. Smiles is precious, a lovely exploration of Koushiro and Hikari’s characters, and you will love it even if you are the most ridiculous Taishiro fan in the world (that would be me).

Singular - 595 words. Besides “Eternity,” “Singular” is my other favorite one-shot. It’s a poignant portrait of Koushiro before he goes to the Digital World. It’s sad, but it moves my heart more than any other fanfiction.

part 1 of lovers in japan series track-by-track commentaries;

since the beginning of june, i've been curating some songs that i think can be associated with my favourite pairs on my twitter. as the digiweek is coming and one of the prompt is "music" i was thinking to wrap them all into a playlist for each pair.

but... i end up having five playlists, and i don't think i want to put them all on digiweek because i actually have another fic entry for day 3. so i'm gonna save one for digiweek, another for a specific otp week (take a guess!), and the others for... well, day-to-day post like this.

you will find the playlist on my lovers in japan series. the name was taken from coldplay's song. please note that my playlists will not be arranged chronologically, so you will see the 'storyline' is kinda messy. i arranged them according to how i think the order of the songs will sound good in the listeners' ears, and trust me when i said i have listened to these playlists a million times to make sure that they do sound good.

please also note the songs may have different interpretations, and i know there's gonna be people who disagree with my song choices. as i'm also not that good at translating songs, this is just my take and 1) i can be wrong; 2) you may have a different take.

for this koukari playlist itself, the title and the subtitle are inspired from @skuag's koukari headcanon. ngl i'm so in love with sku's line about koushiro and hikari questioning things around them, and i put the line into this. i hope you don't mind! :D

onto the real commentaries now!

01. must have been the wind - alec benjamin

when i first heard the song, i thought it was about an attempt to save a girl from an abusive relationship/domestic violence. but generally, this song is also about being a friend to someone who isn't ready to talk about his/her own feelings, and that's how i think the dynamic between koushiro and hikari is. they will both be loyal and helpful no matter what to each other ("promise I'm not playing tricks on you, you're always welcome to come in. you could stay here for an hour or two if you ever need a friend").

the whole song mostly told about the girl refusing to talk, but in the last part of the song, it is also implied that the singer won't push her. koushiro and hikari are both very patient, so this song is perfect. another trivia is that this song is about two persons living in the same buildings and koushiro lives in the same apartment with hikari in da:2020 :D

02. venus - sleeping at last

this is just a general, sweet love song with a hint of scientific touch with astronomical metaphors. also, on the line "astronomy in reverse, it was me who was discovered" that i quoted above, i think it can also be interpreted how koushiro is always passionate about finding things, but then love comes and finds him instead.

03. hesitate - steve moakler

"i've always been the kind to contemplate but you like the kind that don't hesitate, so excuse me while i fall for you." yes. this line is just perfect for koushiro who is very polite and easy to get nervous, and i bet he's very nervous to start a new page full of love. also, i thought the first line when the singer says "the human heart is a scary part in fact" is koushiro-ish because it sounds somewhat biological, iykwim.

04. you can - david archuleta

i (maybe even most of us) often associate koushiro as someone who have no room for romance. even if he does, he will be very careful about it; talk about someone who is very conventional and believe in one true love/soulmate. so that's why when someone as wonderful as hikari comes in picture, he must be thinking this is worth the wait. 'cause if anyone can make him falls in love, she can.

05. livewire - oh wonder

livewire. electricity. koushiro. yes. however, this song is actually more from hikari's side. the first line, "i've been depending on the overgrown" is like her depending too much on taichi. "i've been pretending all my shots are blown, cover my heart up never let it show"—again, with the issue of concealing her feelings. "oh so heavy the water, falling down down deep down" ...well, somehow it fits the dark ocean, eh?

06. (they long to be) close to you - chord overstreet

so i really want to put this song no matter what because it's a simple, sweet, innocent love song—and gee, koukari is such an unproblematic pair! however, the carpenter's version has this line where it says "that is why all the girls in town follow you all around" and i think it's better to reverse the situation because... well, hikari is more popular than koushiro, right? the song can also be used for takari with the "so they sprinkled moon dust in your hair of gold and starlight in your eyes of blue" but the innocence is just screaming koukari for me.

07. take care of yourself - maisie peters

i think this is the most important song on this playlist. the whole song itself is like things that hikari wants to say to koushiro. i remember @seventeenlovesthree once said that koushiro is very lacking sleep, and we know it's because he keeps working and researching. we even see in tri how he couldn't take better care of himself, with messy workstations, fashion 101 with takeru, and that horrendous dark circles. and when someone told him to just take a rest, he would refuse—saying that the world was in danger and it's more important to save it.

please also highlight these two important lines, which can also be good for yourself:

"you don't get a medal for the last one awake"

"and i hate how you're going through hell when you've never let anyone else, so cut off a little slack and roll all your cavalry back"

08. bright - echosmith

similar to venus, this is just a simple love song with a dash of moon and planets in the refrain. also, remember that koushiro's first kanji in his name is hikari, which also means light (bright)!

09. love u - shye

this is similar to must have been the wind, except it's more of hikari's point of view. koushiro is someone who's also struggling to reveal what he feels, but hikari won't ever push him and wait until he's ready. also, i've mentioned before in my headcanon that hikari texts koushiro more often, but once he gets busy, she will not disturb him and just patiently wait until the morning follows. this song is the perfect description.

bonus track: there are many ways to say i love you - sylvan esso

at this stage, you may probably know the general theme of this playlist is koushiro and hikari loving each other very subtly. i often said that they are not the type of couple who says 'i love you' blatantly, and this song is a conclusion on how they profess their love to each other!

sa • ku • ra: what can i say? it’s my otp, first of all, and although the topic is very sensitive, i think i managed somehow. at least i have to appreciate myself for being brave and write something a little bit out of my comfort zone.

an early visit: because koukari needs more love [!!!] i just love the subtleness between the two of them. it’s very natural somehow. they never really mentioned about koushiro’s real parent on the series, so i decided not to explicitly write the surname. but it has been my long-time headcanon that koushiro the diligent son will always clean his parents grave every obon.

a walk home: i’m super into this fic because it’s my first time writing about hiroaki’s relationship with his child!! tbh i’m not really confident about writing a child character because i feel like i have lost all my youth innocence (HAHAHA???) but i think i did chibi!takeru just right.

iridescent sugar clouds: FIRST DRABBLE HERE! have to give a little credit because it’s sort of my first english drabble (i think i wrote hdylyst before this, but anyway...). you can’t just hate taichi being goofy to sora, right?
