The third edition of the Ghana National Gospel Music Awards was launched at the Rexmar Hotel in Kumasi on the 7th November, 2019 from 4:28pm to 6:09pm.
The Launch was headed by Peter Kwabena Dwobeng ( Sergio ) C.E.O NGMA – Daniel Agyin ( Goldmann ) a representative from MUSIGA – Benjamin Ocran, Programs Director Nhiyra FM 104.5 – A representative of Fronkophone ( Sponsor ) and Issac Antwi ( DEDE ) Marketing Manager Love and Nhiyra FM.
After the opening prayer by the M.C, he introduced the heads on the high table and called the C.E.O of NGMA to set the ball rolling – this was what Sergio said in brief.
The third National Gospel Music Award is organized by Global Except Recovery Limited in collaboration with MUSIGA which would handle the Academy formation, supervision and coalition of the votes. Over the years the award scheme has gone through series of improvement and this year, with all the controversy around the awards, we have parted with the Musicians Union Of Ghana ( Musiga) to increase the credibility of the nomination and awarding.
In as much us we can’t control all the controversy surrounding some of the awards, we are a board made up of industrial gaints and the academy whose job is to handle the voting ( A board is made up of over 300 people across Ghana, under MUSIGA). The award scheme is opened to all gospel musicians to submit their nomination online for free through their website http://www.ngma.com.gh . This year awards category has been changed and broken down into three parts: The Main Awards ( 15 awards ) – Industrial ( 5 awards ) and Life Time Achievements. Sergio went on to say that, the awards are going to be 60% Academy voting and a 40% public voting because the scheme wants industrial people and the fun base of each and every nominee to choose the deserving winner but not enclosed family and friends.
On how the awards are going to be promoted this year, Sergio said they will use most of the media tools available for publication of the agenda which includes Radio and TV ( not only Multimedia), Blogs, Graphics and hopefully a national tour.
Sergio finally said ” The purpose of the awards is to acknowledge gospel industry and it’s contribution to the Ghanaian music industry as a whole. Since most of the award scheme do not focus on the gospel fertility, we have put together a scheme to honor the hard work of the main stream and the up and coming. Not just with plaques but lots of surprises which support the career.”
Goldmann also contributed by calling all the gospel artiste from A list to the up and coming to support a scheme designed to honor their works and to give them leverage to enrich their profiles. He finally suggested to the award board to create more platform for the promotion of the gospel artiste who would contribute to this NGMA awards.
Mr. Ocran finalized on the list of nominations which is a total of 20 nominations and how one qualifies to be nominated.
Kindly view the full list of the category and the full details.

Questions from the attendees were addressed by the head in charge and these are some relevant questions and it’s answer.
Q. Will the NGMA awards be ever held in any other region aside Kumasi ( Ashanti Region )? Answer by Goldmann – The Ashanti region is the head of gospel music in Ghana so this award scheme has it’s headquarters in Kumasi so we have together as a board agreed to station everything here in Kumasi.
Q. Why the Hybrid category and do the award scheme wants leverage from lives like Samini, Stoneboye, Kofi Kinaata, Shatta Wale and amongst others?
Answer by Mr. Ocran : The Hybrid Category is defined as a category which awards gospel song that is done by an artiste(s) who is/are known for other genres of music aside gospel music. The song should enjoy some airplay. So the purpose of this category is to appreciate songs that preaches the gospel in as much as the personality is not a gospel artiste but has a song that sells the gospel lyrically.
The MC finally read the timeline for the awards.
Forms will be available online for free, submitting starts from 11th November, 2019 Monday. ( Fill the details and upload the supporting content ) and will end on the 26th November: the closing date.
Nomination will be out on the 10th December, 2019. After the Academy review.
1 February, 2020 will be the main night. The closing prayer was said and the launch was brought to a successful end.
