It's Manuscript Monday, and today we're exploring how to pick the right platform for publishing your book. Let’s break down IngramSpark, Amazon's KDP, and Kobo.
Amazon's KDP offers incredible reach and exclusive promotions like free eBook days and Kindle Countdown Deals. The catch? You must stay exclusive to Amazon for eBooks during these promotions.
IngramSpark is perfect for getting your book into physical stores, offering great print quality and wide distribution. But, it comes with higher setup costs and a steeper learning curve.
Kobo excels in international markets, especially Canada, and doesn't require exclusivity. However, it has a smaller audience compared to Amazon.
Thinking of using an aggregator? They distribute to multiple platforms for convenience, though they take a slice of your sales.
Choose based on where your audience is, the book type, and your preferred involvement level. Each platform has its perks! Personally, my favorite platform is KDP, but what's yours and why?
Got questions or tips about self-publishing? Drop them below! Let’s help each other out. Happy writing!

hey! can you link me to where i can find the god key? i would like to ask my local library if they'll get it for us. also- any plans on an audiobook for it?
No plans for an audiobook currently! I love audiobooks but they're expensive to create and as an indie author I just can't justify it currently :/
Links:

I love my e-reader. I take it to work and every time I travel. It’s nice having so many book options and that it connects to overdrive so I can have library books on it too. I will admit I still buy physical copies of books (either special editions or copies of books I read on my e reader and loved)
I’m in Canada so our big book chain, indigo, has one called Kobo which has its own store so I don’t have to use kindle/amazon. Maybe there a uk bookseller has a similar option??
(responding to this ask so I'm not spamming everyone but have read and appreciate everybody's asks!!)
thanks! there seems to be a lot of love for ereaders overall so I'm thinking it's a good move. kobo is the name that keeps popping up so I've read some articles and it seems that it's better suited to me since it means I can import ebooks from different sources (which is especially useful since my main library doesn't use overdrive which appears to be the only library system supported by either brand). I'll have more of a look into the different models :)

Part 3 Entertainment - Books Part 2
I finally(!) learned about Stuff Your Kindle Day (SYKD), which is a bit of a misnomer as it's
Not amazon- or kindle-exclusive
Multiple times throughout the year
but it's a day where indie publishers/author promo groups all sell free books at once, adding up to dozens or hundreds (and sometimes thousands) of free books at a time, for a single day. If you were thinking about getting some ebooks to help pass the time at consults/after surgery, it wouldn't take very many out of those large number of free books to have plenty of reading material. I've been able to confirm that, outside of the US, this is also available in Canada, the UK, and Australia. Other countries may be participating as well, but I'm struggling to confirm one way or another, and the same book may not be free in all regions.
It's worth mentioning that Kindle, Apple, Nook, and Kobo all have free apps if you don't have an ereader (or would rather use a tablet than have a dedicated ereader), and that all of these storefronts are, to my knowledge, participants in all of these events. I will say that I was initially hesitant to get an ereader and waited a long time to get one, but I don't regret it. I have been, in particular, VERY vocal in recommending them to people who struggle to read paper books because you can change the font/font size/margin to make them more accessible, including using the OpenDyslexia font.
SYKD originally was romance-exclusive, and the "official" STKD events are still heavily romance-focused, but there are other publishers and groups coordinating similar, smaller events in other genres ("Book Blast" seems to be the current popular name for discount events not associated with the original group running SYKD).
If you know me at all, I am a pretty prolific category romance reader (especially at places like the doctor's office, where a romance novel is a nice time-waster that doesn't require wifi and allows me to not be fully immersed while I listen for my name to be called), so I'm quite excited for the official announcement for STKD, likely happening in March. In 2023, for some measure of comparison, SYKD happened on March 31, June 30, September 20, and December 27.
Romance Bookworms is the home of the "original" SYKD and allows you to sign up for email alerts (or substack) when they announce the dates for 2024, which are a closely guarded secret. SYKD is the largest of events by FAR with about 2,000 books available in the December 2023 event. Romance is the primary genre, but other books in other genres are free for SYKD as well. Several sources indicate that Romance Bookworms has sections on their SYKD listings specifically for BIPOC authors and for books that feature LGBTQ+ protagonists.
Romance Book Lovers is an unrelated group that is hosting a Romance Book Blast, with the next listed date as April 23.
The Cozy Mystery Book Club has coordinated several Cozy Mystery Book Blasts in the past, including in January of 2024, with the next event listed publicly as April 25.
Witchy Bookworms coordinates the Witchy Book Blast, which ran last on January 27 and already has the next date listed publicly as April 27.
Fantasy Book Dragons just ran their first "Stuff Your Kindle with Fantasy" event in January and have mentioned plans for another event in June with no date announced yet.
YA Bookworms runs a similar YA-focused event, the last one I can find info on happened on October 7. They also have a substack.
Terrify Your Tablet seems to run on October 31 only each year (This is the same event as Spook Your Kindle; they changed the name to clarify that it's not amazon-exclusive).
Thriller Blast appears to be a similar event for mystery, suspense, and thriller books, with a similar hook of waiting on an email announcement for dates and no clear indication on the landing page when the last event was held. I also wasn't able to confirm anyone participating it in via reddit, or anywhere else, so your guess is as good as mine.
Romance Audiobookworms also runs a similar event for audiobooks, Stuff Your Earbuds, with an event announced for spring but the date still unannounced, just like SYKD. This is still a relatively new event, unlike SYKD.
There's a lot of whining online about the quality of the books available for these events (especially SYKD, which I'm sure is unrelated to the fact that it's mostly romance and the general feelings most people have about romance as a genre), but the fact of the matter is that books available on kindle, especially for free, vary wildly in quality all the time no matter what. I've quit reading a lot of duds in the year I've owned an ereader, but I've read a lot of things I liked, too, and I assume the offerings for these events are a similar mixed bag.
Considering how many new events have cropped up in the past 18 months or so, I'll be excited to see in any new author groups decide to run similar promotions in the future or whether more groups decide to align with SYKD.

Description
#1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts begins a new trilogy of adventure, romance, and magick in The Awakening.
In the realm of Talamh, a teenage warrior named Keegan emerges from a lake holding a sword—representing both power and the terrifying responsibility to protect the Fey. In another realm known as Philadelphia, a young woman has just discovered she possesses a treasure of her own…
When Breen Kelly was a girl, her father would tell her stories of magical places. Now she’s an anxious twentysomething mired in student debt and working a job she hates. But one day she stumbles upon a shocking discovery: her mother has been hiding an investment account in her name. It has been funded by her long-lost father—and it’s worth nearly four million dollars.
This newfound fortune would be life-changing for anyone. But little does Breen know that when she uses some of the money to journey to Ireland, it will unlock mysteries she couldn’t have imagined. Here, she will begin to understand why she kept seeing that silver-haired, elusive man, why she imagined his voice in her head saying Come home, Breen Siobhan. It’s time you came home. Why she dreamed of dragons. And where her true destiny lies—through a portal in Galway that takes her to a land of faeries and mermaids, to a man named Keegan, and to the courage in her own heart that will guide her through a powerful, dangerous destiny…

THE BONDS WE BREAK by Scarlett Cole
Release Date: August 28: Apple, Nook, and Kobo August 31: Amazon and Kindle Unlimited
Rae When Uther "King" Hills, president of the Iron Outlaws MC, shows up at my home, I know it's for one thing. Revenge. My life for my brother's, a traitor to the club. My sacrifice to ensure his loyalty. But I know a thing or two about tragic kings. They never win. What I didn't know was how they can steal your heart in the process of trying.
King Rae Miller is my enemy's little sister. And I intend to ruin her before I toss her back at her brother's feet. Even as my actions tear my club apart. Except this Shakespeare-quoting fire-cracker has me seeing ghosts. I don't scare her. She outwits me at every turn and has a body I can't get enough of. The fact I want to kill every person who ever hurt her is irrelevant.
Only, when she's at risk because of me, I pray the bonds I've broken can mend themselves. Because without my club, we don't have a hope of surviving.
TW: References to past self-harm (cutting) and abuse (not sexual), dubious consent, issues with food preparation (not eating disorders), praise kink.

Meet S. Cole: The tattoo across my right hip says it all really. A Life Less Ordinary. Inked by the amazingly talented Luke Wessman at the Wooster Street Social Club (a.k.a. New York Ink). Why is it important? Well, it sums up my view on life. That we should all aspire to live a life that is less boring, less predictable. Be bold, and do something amazing. I’ve made some crazy choices. I’ve been a car maker, a consultant, and even a senior executive at a large retailer running strategy. Born in England, spent time in the U.S. and Japan, before ending up in Canada where I met my own, personal hero – all six and a half feet of him. Both of us are scorpios! Yeah, I know! Should have checked the astrological signs earlier, but somehow it works for us. We have two amazing kids, who I either could never part with or could easily be convinced to sell on e-bay.
I’ve wanted to be a writer for a really long time. Check through my office cupboards or my computer and you’ll find half written stories and character descriptions everywhere. Now I'm getting the chance to follow that dream. To find out about S. Cole’s upcoming releases and giveaways, sign up for her newsletter here

Gaige’s curiosity gets the better of him when he discovers a bookstore on an abandoned street where no bookstore should be. He steps inside and is immediately enthralled by its antiquarian sights and smells. But one book in particular calls to him. The book leads Gaige on a horrific descent into the unknown. As he falls into the depths of its pages, he loses blocks of time, and his friends become trapped inside ancient cellars with seemingly no means of escape.
Gaige soon learns that the ancient bookseller is a notorious serial killer from previous century, and fears that he has fallen into a predicament from which he may not escape. When all seems lost, he finds the one person he can turn to for help—Mael, a sweet teen also trapped inside the book who didn't fall for the bookseller’s tricks. NEW BOOK “WRITING SONGS IN THE STREAMING AGE” REVEALS HOW MUSIC STREAMING IS DRAMATICALLY CHANGING HOW SONGS ARE WRITTEN TODAY
Music streaming is having a profound impact on songs and songwriting….
Songwriters who want to get more plays on Spotify and other streaming platforms need to rethink their approach to songwriting and song structure to meet the needs of streaming audiences. Spoiled-for-choice streaming listeners are increasingly likely to ‘click and skip’ to the next track if a song doesn’t grab them in the first 20 seconds.
That’s the key message of a new book titled: Writing Songs in the Streaming Age – 40 Mistakes to Avoid If You Want to Get More Streams. The book aims to help new songwriters to create more streaming-friendly songs.
“Streaming has not only revolutionised the way people consume music, it is also transforming the way songs are being written and recorded,” says the book’s author Brian Oliver, an experienced music publisher. “Streaming is changing the whole methodology of songwriting. Successful streaming now requires a different type of song.”
Writing Songs in the Streaming Age takes a close look at how the global dominance of music streaming is having a far-reaching impact on songwriting and the structure of songs. It reveals how songs that connect in the streaming world are no longer the same as songs that work on traditional media, such as radio.
“Songwriters are facing a period of great change,” Oliver warns. “To succeed in the highly competitive streaming marketplace, creators need to adapt to the new songwriting conventions that are emerging in this algorithm-driven musical environment.”
Oliver says song structures that have been at the heart of hit songs for over 60 years are now being replaced by a song form that has one overriding objective: Keep streaming audiences listening for at least the first 30 seconds—otherwise a play won’t count as a stream…. the song may be downgraded on the streaming service’s database….and nobody gets paid.
With more songs now being designed to please the streaming companies’ algorithms, Writing Songs in the Streaming Age aims to help provide a better understanding of the changing building blocks of song structure in the streaming age. It’s an era in which the verse has gained a new importance because ‘click and skip’ streaming listeners don’t always stick around for the chorus.
The book examines the essential elements that are consistently found in the construction, melodies and lyrics of the biggest streaming hits. Crucially, it highlights the most common errors made when these key components are built into a song. In doing so, it aims to help new and aspiring songwriters avoid such mistakes in their own songs.
The book provides 40 insightful tips, such as: treating a verse more like a chorus, not making a song too long for streaming, choosing the right tempo for streaming listeners, and genre-blending songs to get onto influential streaming playlists. There’s also a comprehensive Checklist designed to help new songwriters overcome the most frequent mistakes that are made when trying to write streaming-friendly songs.
Writing Songs in the Streaming Age – 40 Mistakes to Avoid If You Want to Get More Streams is now available from Amazon as a paperback and eBook in all territories, and also from leading eBook retailers such as Apple Books, Kobo and Barnes & Noble.

Felix’s news network—the business that broke them apart—is under fire from an unscrupulous employee pointing the finger at Felix. An official investigation could topple their house of cards. The only way to prove Felix is innocent is to pull off their biggest con yet.
But though Felix still has the gift of grift, his reunion with Danny is bittersweet. Their ten-year separation left holes in their hearts that no amount of stolen property can fill. A green crew of young thieves looks to them for guidance as they negotiate old jewels and new threats to pull off the perfect heist—but the hardest job is proving that love is the only thing of value they’ve ever had.
