Not to dig up old discourse but I was going through this blog and woof. You had some pretty obsessively upset anons here, huh? Personally, I love the surge in sad/pathetic/victim MCs - it feels cathartic. Especially if all the misfortunes can make the MC either numb or really fucking mean.

Not like, "let me take revenge and (re)gain some power" mean, but 1. "I'm hurting so I'll take it out on the people who still care about me" or 2. "I might not be able to hurt you back physically, but let me devastate someone you love emotionally" or my favorite 3. "I'll make you love me only to reveal you mean absolutely nothing to me, even though you'd still be able to beat me to death with your bare hands afterwards" mean. Examples for each three are MindBlind (1 being cruel to Nick and/or Sally), Crown of Ashes and Flames (2 romance Helios, 1 be cruel to Lancelot) and Defiled Hearts (3 romance Marcus).

Bonus point for unhealthy coping mechanisms like sleeping around, drinking or self-harm (through others or themselves). And sometimes it's upsetting for sure, but that's what the more empowering and/or feel-good IFs are for! I love binging WIPs that make me miserable and then re-reading Fields of Asphodel or One Knight Stand (with a cuckoo MC) or Jolly Good 😂

Sorry for the long message and for dredging all of this up, I'm a new (and a little obsessed) reader so I had to binge.

Oh yes, we were not short on drama here in the early days 😭 it came to the point where I had to block people. Insanity. And I agree! I do messy slightly tortured characters who make messy decisions. I know it’s hard to stomach being small and powerless for so long, but to me it builds (messed up) characters that either make it or break it. :D and like I always say, if people want a story where the main character has more control and power, they can find it elsewhere. Our MC here is very much the underdog with much to prove and more to lose ☺️

But I will admit being mean and cruel to my characters make me sad 😔 but it won’t stop me from doing it haha 🤣

Rewriting DC Monkey Prince & Nezha: Characterization (it’s really bad)

I previously mentioned how I believe Marcus Sun = Gene Luen Yang self-insert, and it only gets worse.

Marcus' character is established through relation with other characters. Marcus is being traumatized by Batman. Marcus is being bullied by Riz. Marcus is being told off by Kaya. Marcus is being wrongfully attacked and kicked around by Big Bad superheroes.

Then Marcus gets superpowers, and he immediately uses them for selfish revenge. He is then saved by Zhu Bajie, who forces him to be a superhero.

Marcus seems very reactionary, only getting the story moving because of plot convenience.

The poor writing isn’t just limited to Marcus. The original characters are bland and lacking in depth. Kaya is a generic love interest who does next to nothing about her bully brother. Riz is an over the top bully who gets redeemed for no reason other than giving a pointless arc closure.

All of the DC characters have been misused and mischaracterized, all for the sake of making Monkey Prince the star of the show.

A rule of writing is that characters have to be distinct. If you can replace Character A with Character B, and there would be no difference in behavior and action, you’re doing something wrong.

The biggest issue (as always) is Batman. Yang did not write Batman. He did not even write, to quote OSP, “the Punisher in a silly hat.” He wrote an edgy wannabe with delusions of being the Punisher.

Batman is also incredibly dumbed down, falling for the "you got your fly down" trick, and the whole “Marcus’ Batman trauma” subplot goes nowhere. After appearing for the first few issues, Marcus just moves on to hating and dumping on the Dark Knight to hating and dumping on other superheroes.

The only exception to Marcus’ “I Hate Superheroes” is Supergirl, who only serves to be the generic love interest who needs to be a “Damsel for the hero to prove their worth to”.

What did Kara do besides show up, pick a fight with the protagonist, flirt with said protagonist, fawn over how “AMAZING” the protagonist is, then be the “Damsel in Distress” for protagonist to save?

Marcus as a character is a bit bad (not just in terms of lackluster characterization). Marcus flirts with Kaya and Kara on sight, which is kinda creepy. He never bothers to discuss or work on his "I Hate Superheroes" trauma, which means this plot line goes no where, but is forced into relevancy by contrived encounters with superheroes. He never questions the morality of what his parents are doing, or find ways to help them not be henchmen.

Does he have any actual flaws that he recognizes and improves on? Does he overcome his trauma in a meaningful way? Does he take any action of his own?

The only arc he goes through was the vague "I don't believe in myself, I don't know who I am" which gets resolved after 12 issues with little to no change in behavior or thought. All the changes is he has arrived at the "I don't know what the future holds, but it will be frickin' wicked" stage.

I hate this self-actualization ending. It’s very Mary-Sueish, especially since there are loose plot threads that were never tied up.

For Devil Nezha, I'll already ranted about him here.

It’s the same problems as the DC characters. He’s an interchangeable baddie who can be swapped with any other character, who only serves to make the heroes look more awesome and good for defeating him.

What’s worse is that many of the Devil Nezha stories were written by non-Chinese people, and it shows.

Fixing This in 新神榜：孙太子

There is how I would redo it in my rewrite:

I would scale down the world to just Gotham. There will be a consistent cast of characters to show up, and enough time to flesh them out as individuals. Give Kaya and Riz some actual depth and growth. It also gives Marcus the opportunity to interact with Batman's Rogues.

Since this is just going to be focused on Gotham, I might not include Shellestriah, but I could write a one-shot with her later

Give Marcus' "I Hate Superheroes" an actual arc. He needs to confront Batman, the source of his trauma, in order to have growth.

Address the "Evil Grandpa Ultra-Humanite" and "Parents are Evil Henchmen" storyline. Give them resolution. Give Laura and Winston some character beyond "Good Parents".

GET RID OF SUPERGIRL. She's been butchered into being Yang's self-inset fantasy "generic white bread damsel in distress", and I hate it. Yang should have just stuck with Kaya, or no love interest.

GIVE MARCUS AGENCY. He needs to want something of his own. Since he's staying in Gotham here, it gives him more opportunities to try to be the hero that he thinks Batman isn't. Give him opportunities to have meaningful relationships with characters other than Zhu Bajie.

For Nezha, my plan is to split him into two characters: Devil Nezha, and Li Yunxiang.

Li Yunxiang, under the guidance of Yang Jian, arrive at Gotham in hopes of collecting Nezha's weapons and help Yunxiang escape Heaven's watchful eye.

Devil Nezha, the understudy that Heaven took in when the original was banished to Earth to be stuck reincarnating. He was a pawn of the Celestial Court, held in place by the Huntian Ling. When he found out the truth, he tried to rebel, only to be sealed away in a tomb.

I have big plans for Devil Nezha that I won't spoil.

MAKE BATMAN COMPASSIONATE AND SMART. He does research about the strange crimes and sudden wave of demons. He does his best to provide guidance to this monkey superhero who hates him for reasons he doesn't understand. He learns about the Shugel-Shen situation and tries to offer them a legitimate job at Wayne Industries, where they can do good. He meets Li Yunxiang, De Zheng, and Yang Jian.

TIME. but, I wouldn't put it under the Good Zack Moments Category. Like, it's the one (1) singular episode he and his brother switch places to where I actually don't mind Cody and kinda wanna deck Zack (no pun intended lol)

Okay, now I'm gonna go mostly in order (yes, I've seen it enough times that I can do that, my life is very sad lmao)

- Flowers and Chocolate, which is the episode where Cody's girlfriend, Barbara, and their friend, Bob, visits, is good just for the sheer fact that the bi Zack vibes are immaculate. Especially when you take into the consideration the running gag in the original where Bob straight up thought he was dating Zack. (Yes, I can elaborate if need be)

- it isn't necessarily a good Zack episode per se, but the part of me that lives for platonic Zondon will not allow me to skip the episode SeaHarmony which is when Zack and London use the singles' cruise to set up Moseby and Ms Tuttweiller so they're distracted by each other and Zack and London can do whatever they want lmao I'm sure Cody and Bailey have a b-plot but I don't remember what it is jdjcjd

- Maddie on Deck. Don't feel like I need to explain why that's a good Zack episode, but literally. Was going to try to get through this list without wanting to cry but I've already failed, like it's literally been like six years and he pretty much knows by then that they'll never be an item but he still tries so hard to be her prince or her knight in shining armor, and just to make her happy because he wants to see her happy, literally why is he the best boy in existence??? 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺

- Both The Wrong Stuff and Splash and Trash demonstrate once again that Zack will do anything for anyone just to make them happy, I'm GOING to cry

- I like In the Line of Duty just because I want to cry whenever I see Zack in his little hall monitor uniform. Also, he bullies Cody in one scene and that's always fun

- I like Roomies just because it showcases Zack's big heart, like he's literally just ready to give Marcus the childhood he never had after knowing him for like 2 days??? I love him so much????

All The Troubles In The Universe Just Sitting At My Doorstep

This is a Superwholock fic which I had big plans for that features Mollstrade as the main couple. Basically Molly is related to the Winchesters, and the Doctor is a friend of the family, and they have to head off a Dalek invasion and a demon possessed Moriarty.

Any Press Is (Supposedly) Good Press

This is a Sherlolly fic where they're both movie stars, but Sherlock has a reputation of being a "bad boy" and Molly is a wholesome former child star. He asks her to spend time with him to get the paparazzi off his back, and she agrees. I really do need to work on this one more.

Every Journey Always Brings Me Back To You

This is a Bleach fic with Uryu/Orihime as the main couple. Basically Uryu heads to California for college and keeps in touch with Orihime, and when he realizes that her like in Japan is making her miserable he offers to let her stay with him in California. I think I may enter this one in next year's WIPBB long round.

Heads Will Roll

This is a Star Trek: AOS fic where Spock is asked by his father and Spock Prime ask Spock to go on a diplomatic assignment where Spock is then framed for murder. This is also on my list of fics I desperately need to work on.

Make A Wish

My "Sixteen Candles" Sherlolly rewrite! Basically Molly is in the Molly Ringwald part, Sherlock is his love interest, John is the geek and Mary is Sherlock's current girlfriend. I think I need to watch the movie again before I can write some more, and thankfully I found my portable DVD player last week so I can do just that.

Merry Christmas (And A Not So Nice New Year)

A bit of drama in my mostly fluffy Khanolly series where the two of them are friend with the Doctor and Rory and Amy, and Sherlock and Khan share the same DNA. I have no idea where to go next with it so it's on the back burner for the moment.

Super Secret Spies & Stuff

This is another Star Trek: AOS fic, with the Spirk pairing being predominant and Spock being Kirk's roommate who is also a spy keeping Kirk safe. I have to reread the first chapter and look at my notes, but I may update this soon.

The Cursed Dragon

This is a loose adaptation of Mercedes Lackey's "One Good Knight" that is a Sebolly fic. Molly falls in love with a dragon after she escapes his clutches...only to find out things aren't as they seem with the dragon or with her mother's court. I'll probably pick it up again once I re-read the book.

The Spy & The Spymaster

A Sherlock/MCU crossover. Basically, Yelena is stuck between a rock and a hard place and needs money to get out of it, so she takes on a contract to kill Mary Watson. Mycroft gets Natasha to head up Mary's security team, and sparks fly between them. I think this was the last WIP I updated before my writing urges went splat on the ground.

The Tale Of The Ruined Vacation

Part of my "The Family Business" series, which is a crossover between Elementary and Sherlock (the Sherlocks are cousins born around the same time, who share a name). Basically, Lestrade goes on vacation to New York to spend time with his girlfriend Joan but they all get super involved in a cross-jurisdictional case.

The Trek Into Darkness

Another book adaptation! This time, it's a Star Trek: AOS fic very loosely adapting the second book in the "Elenium" trilogy by David and Leigh Eddings, with Khan as a dragon who's been cursed to shapeshift against his will, and it's all Marcus's fault. I definitely have plans to update this one soon.

To Fight For The One You Love

And yet another book adaptation...sort of. It's more inspired by the world portrayed in Jayne Castle's "Harmony" series, where colonists from Earth have been stranded on an alien planet for a long time and adapted pretty well. Khan came with the original colonists, and Molly is just now showing regenerative abilities that may make her immortal like Khan. She's also got the ability to deal with dangerous "ghosts" in the alien tombs. I may update this one later this week.

What Could Have Been, What Will Be In Its Stead

This is a Sherlock fic where Sherlock and Molly were together and he's killed before they can get engaged and he finds out he'd be a father. Mycroft, who's loved Molly from afar, steps into the role as a friend that eventually blossoms into something more. Not sure where I want to go with it so I need to stew on it some more till I've got a clear vision.
