Automotive 3PL Market: Outlook, Opportunities Amid Global Supply Chain Challenges - UnivDatos
According to a new report by UnivDatos Market Insights, the Automotive 3PL Market is expected to reach USD 494.75 billion in 2032 by growing at a CAGR of 8.38%. Outsourcing of logistics and supply chain management activities is on the rise in the automotive industry as manufacturers and suppliers look for ways to cut costs and improve the efficiency and flexibility of the automotive supply chain. Third-party logistics providers have seen increased business from automotive makers and suppliers of auto components because the latter are outsourcing their warehousing, transportation, customs brokerage, and distribution activities, thus enabling them to concentrate on value-added activities such as designing, developing, and producing automobiles.

KEY GROWTH DRIVERS:
The Automotive 3PL market is on the rise for several reasons such as the increased supply chain operations’ complications, inventory tracking requirements that are becoming more and more real-time, and the ever-increasing pressure toward cost reduction. This latest trend has therefore seen manufacturers outsourcing their complex supply chain systems involving suppliers of automotive parts, assembly plants, and distribution networks from 3PL services. Furthermore, the emergence of EVs and self-driving vehicles as new logistics models also presents added complexity that only a few third-party logistics know-how and technology address. To this, supply chain management companies are beginning to adopt automation systems, IoT devices, and AI solutions for demand forecasting for precise delivery of supplies, shortening of delivery times, and prevention of possible mistakes. They are important in meeting just-in-time delivery systems which are important for the automobile industry to keep its inventory expenses low while orders continue to be processed.
Latest Developments
· In October 2024, CEVA Logistics acquired a joint venture company from Bolloré Logistics and Horoz Logistics named Horoz Bolloré Logistics founded back in 2000. The full acquisition of Horoz Bolloré Logistics as CEVA has the potential to further strengthen the range of services we provide in Turkey that will help enhance our international logistics product portfolio.
· In October 2024, CEVA Logistics, a global third-party logistics company, and Almajdouie Logistics, one of the most prominent end-to-end logistics solution providers in the Middle East region agreed to form a joint venture in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA).
· In July 2024, The DHL Supply Chain penetrated the United States retail out zone with new additional stock in Troy Michigan. The new facility also provides touch-screen kiosks for staff-assisted and automated self-service besides other services and DHL branded products such as Bubble packing material, packing tapes, and branded moving boxes among others that will make and create the right customer retail sensation.
· In December 2023, CEVA Logistics of the CMA group closed the acquisition of GEFCO. As a part of this adjustment and in line with its deal with GEFCO, CEVA Logistics has said that it creates a specific finished vehicle logistics organization.
Transport Segment Gaining Maximum Traction in the Market
The transportation segment is expected to experience significant growth in the forecast period owing to core functionality, as it moves raw materials, goods, auto components, and finished products from one place to another. This is happening due to increased globalization, as it allows components to be manufactured components in one part of the world and sold to another part of the world. This requires a smooth and efficient transportation system and hence, the services for the automotive 3PL increase. Moreover, the automobile and transportation industry are booming due to the emergence of electric vehicles. Major countries around the world are accepting these new energy vehicles and providing subsidies for greater adoption, which has boosted the demand for automotive 3 PL services. Developing countries such as India, and Indonesia may have manufacturing units for these vehicles, but mainly they are importing from other nations. For instance, in 2023, according to the report by Volza, India imported 12,967 shipments of electric vehicles from Mar 2023 to Feb 2024 (TTM). Companies operating in the market are expanding their logistic services to fulfill the market demand. For instance, in April 2024, Kuehne+Nagel expanded its spare parts logistics for BMW. The company is one of the leading logistic providers and now manages a 170,000m² spare parts fulfillment and delivery centre in Wallersdorf, Germany.

Conclusion
The automotive 3PL market is on pace for steady growth around the globe due to the adoption of new technologies and emphasis on efficiency in supply chains typical of the automotive sector. Emerging trends such as increased demand for electric cars, increasing trends of e-commerce in auto parts, and the adoption of sustainable solutions are new opportunities for 3PL providers. Based on the current developments, it is evident that the establishment of strategic partnerships, and investment in sound technologies will be the key force in sustaining growth in this fast-growing market.

More Coffee
As I promised I went to four different coffee shops this past week in my effort for a simple morning ritual. This week I spent about the same amount of money but, there was some sticker shock to be had. The four shops are within my transit to work from BART, so how did Philz, Illy Cafe, Bluestone, and Blue Bottle were on my list this week.
My journey began at Philz, a renowned coffee shop with two locations on Market Street. Opting for the one near the Ferry Building,I realize Philz is known for its pour-over coffee process, which takes a little longer an actual 60 seconds longer than the machine grind, pump and drip. Each Philz Coffee is featured by a bright yellow, stainless steal, light beachwood and a chalkboard accent to lend a sense of the original authenticity from its "humble" beginnings.
I was promptly informed that my mocha would not have any whipped
cream on it and while my disappointment wouldn't cause too much distress I was bemused would my world actually crumble at the loss of whipped cream. It was a Monday, so anything is possible. My drink was announced and I picked it up from a nameless barista and while I am sure an employee of Philz I was not sure the barista wasn’t following me around from store to store as nothing distinguished them from the customers except by location.
Blue Bottle, a long-standing favorite, holds my number three spot on my coffee needs. I adore their Nola iced coffee, even on a chilly day, and on any day one can find clean lines in their locations.
The simple design of a blue bottle on a white background is prevalent quiet richness. The Nola iced coffee has natural sweetness and soft leather undertones that I appreciate as the atmosphere allowing me to slow down and enjoy the moment amidst the shop authenticity.
The next day, I made my way to Bluestone Coffee near the Palace Hotel on Market Street, I expected efficiency and a focus on coffee. What might come as a surprise and maybe my own hubris is that as I write this I just discovered that Bluestone is Australian Coffeehouse and its reputation is prestigious. However, I encountered a kiosk setup with two hardworking individuals. It became apparent that there was a labor shortage, and the barista stationed behind the coffee maker repeatedly directed customers to use the kiosk, despite their inclination to approach the open counter.
The small nook along Market Street on cold and windy morning where Karl the Fog lingered in Union Square. Bluestone turned out to be the most expensive coffee shop on my journey, and unfortunately, the experience fell short of my expectations.
I collected my coffee, the second employee was meticulously preparing
an avocado and egg toast with microgreens so delicately placed that it seemed the greens were still growing. I had to inconvenience the employee to retrieve a French pastry from the display case. There was no inclination or offer to heat up the pastry just annoyance and that is expensive for one to appreciate the hard work of such an esteemed reputation.
Finally, Illy Cafe where the display of Italian and European pastries was
so enticing that I could practically feel the calories adding up as I glanced at them. I indulged in a mocha accompanied by a warmed chocolate croissant, resulting in an expensive
combination of coffee and pastry
Illy Cafe's bright pops of red, elegant decor, and comfortable seating created a sense of normalcy in paying a premium to enjoy a cup of chocolate-infused espresso and steamed milk. Illy Cafe gives the quiet rich feel of where business deals are made and life long friends enjoy sitting down and connecting. It may inch up in my go to spot.
The mochas and the Nola were all good coffee and where the Australian, Italian, American versions of espresso drinks are contrived to fit in our waiting palms it begs the question of Coffee being a commodity that is fueling an actual economy.
My last look will be the breakdown from the seed to the porcelain cup because right now, today, May 26, 2023 at $180.85 for Coffee futures.

As of late, I have been enamored with shopping malls.
No, no, I really must correct that. I detest shopping malls, which obviously explains why I keep finding myself inside of them. I love to see and be seen but I just can't stand crowds. I dread passing kiosks. They accost you. If I had wanted to buy whatever sugar scrub you're selling, I already would have. Everything smells like pretzels. There is a place selling cheesecake. I love cheesecake. The cheesecake itself isn't the issue. The menu is simply too long and you really can't expect me to read all of that when I just want cheesecake that I don't even need.
I don't need a lot of things. However, I want them.
I digress. Malls are wretched -utterly wretched- and it's no wonder they're dying out. I've become fascinated because they're dying out, even if certain ones don't realize that yet. It's best exemplified by department stores, the big ones, of which I used to be an enormous fan and which I still am but only the very nice ones where I can spend my paycheck in one go. It's much nicer to spend someone else's paycheck in one go, of course, but I'm an angel and would never, ever do such a thing, not even if a kindly benefactor took pity on me and decided to gift me an entirely runway-ready wardrobe and a new bedroom set with a fresh set of silk sheets to go with it.
Visiting a department store used to be quite the glamorous affair, you know. They had a sense of style, of drama. It seemed like they were much bigger then, much grander, and the escalators. For some time, I worked briefly in a store -I dare not name it because it'll date me and apparently age is considered quite embarrassing here for reasons unknown to me- selling perfume, mainly to very well dressed ladies and significantly less well dressed gentleman wanting last minute gifts for said ladies, and I had to take three flights of escalators to reach my area. It was fantastic. I was sheltered -very, very sheltered, not sophisticated at all, easily impressed- and I'd never seen anything like it before. I'm still very fond of escalators, even if I'm afraid I'll catch the hems of my pants in them.
And the lights! The lights! They had a lovely jewelry section, really superb, and they had all these pretty lights reflecting off of everything and the loveliest marble floor and a very nice skylight and when you passed through it at the right time of day, all the displays gleamed so nicely. The jewelry was nice too, of course, because I wouldn't want to work any place that had ugly jewelry, but those cases were so nice. They had a darling little café too -completely unaffordable, I've never seen such an expensive salad in my life- and I liked to spend a lot of time in there ordering cookies and tea and observing the latest trends in hats. Hats really ought to come back into vogue because they add such an air of drama and mystery. People nowadays think they're so daring in fashion but where are the hats, hm? Where are they? If you add any sense of fashion, you'd be wearing a hat and it'd be completely over the top. If you can't be outrageous, then what's the point?
It's all so boring now. You go into a department store and it's half-abandoned at best and you can't find anyone to ring you up at all because only three people are working the entire floor. There is always a waffle maker on sale and no one will ever buy it. The fashion hasn't adapted in twenty or thirty years unless you're at one of the very upscale department stores certain people in my life don't like me visiting because they think I'll make bad financial decisions and even then, the menswear is always so, so boring. It makes me weep. Where are all the colors, hm? There's still some fun to be had in the sort of clothes marketed towards young men but after a certain point, it's all drab button downs and maybe bowling shirts if you're feeling edgy. Disgusting. After a certain point, you have to choose between no pockets and no color (gender is fun but gendering is so horrid) unless you pay a tremendous amount of money or make your own clothing, which, of course, costs a tremendous amount of money itself because the price of cloth is outrageous. Trust me, I know.
Anyway, they're all half-dead and completely unglamorous now. Maybe they never really were that stylish to begin with and maybe I was simply easily impressed, but no, no, I believe that they really were better. You have to adapt to survive, you know. It turns out you can't stay the same way forever. The department store model isn't sustainable in this day and age, especially if you never update the stores to match modern tastes. At very least, update the merchandise, please. I feel as if I've seen the same paisley pink pant suit on clearance in at least three separate decades.
They're awful. Horrid. I still find myself walking through dying department stores quite often, especially ones that haven't realized they're dying yet. I do generally avoid purchasing any clothing there as a proprietor of my own boutique (if you need a last minute card for your mother, please visit; I'll save you) and as someone who can generally make something better anyway, but my accomplishments don't extend to materializing my favorite colognes out of nowhere. If I don't smell like vanilla musk at all times, I will dissipate into the aether.
My latest haul because apparently people share this online:
A rollerball of my favorite scent
One candle, rose petal ice cream
Five containers of bobby pins
An eye mask, unicorn design
An anti-aging serum. The sales person was very persuasive. I don't know what I'm going to do with this. I look like this on purpose.
A Bluetooth speaker. I already hate it.
Several boxes of assorted candy
Hair ties, velvet
A tote bag for carrying flowers in
Several interesting rocks from a store that smells like the 1960s
Scented water that you spray on your face when you'd like water on your face. My god, why haven't I been in the face water business?
Love and kisses,
Me
#my online diary#I have been forced to start an online diary because CERTAIN PEOPLE in my life who will remain nameless#believe that I spend too much money on notebooks.#I spend the appropriate amount of money on notebooks.

Informal City: 2 Days To Go!
The International Summer School Informal City: Temporal-Autonomous Utopias opens up topics on how the transformation of the system over the past thirty years has affected changing patterns of behaviour, values, and beliefs about living and understanding cities on the case study of Koper, Slovenia.

Examples of temporary use of empty spaces and staging of new city venues with content that is open to all city users will seek to create new urbanity based on inclusive social integration, social solidarity and ecological inclusion on the basis of participatory cooperation.

The research work will be based on an analysis (with the aim of understanding) of the current situation in Koper. Participants will have the opportunity to discuss in open public platforms through contextual interviews with various interested publics, and later through methodological processes of inclusive social design to develop potential concepts including urban and architectural planning. This can serve the Municipality of Koper as a basis for the municipal spatial plan. Based on a well-thought-out and in-depth realized process, a new vocabulary will be defined for residents, spatial users and policy makers in order to create a common language for spatial development.

The first summer school will introduce the topic of water recuperation, the promotion of organic food production methods and the creation of a connected community. It will enable participants to both understand and apply new strategies to shape the participatory process and inclusive lifestyles in cities throughout the post-COVID period.

In addition to the listed activities in the new center of culture Libertas, we created a series of events for the upcoming months. From the iconic Kiosk K-67 relocated in Koper for a special collaboration between Obalne Galerije Piran and Avtomatik Delovišče, to the BankArt project space of VUO program by University of Primorska, Faculty of Education. In order to produce and share the knowledge, content analysis and results will be disseminated through various media: Primorske novice in the monthly Prostorska frka, Radio Koper Koperiskop and WELTRAUM radio show on Indepented Coastal Radio NOR.

In parallel, the urban acupuncture table for the future will be tested for the community. The table will be a stage to address the audience, while participants will share food, exchange informal ideas and open new cultural dialogues. The table is also an infrastructure where the production and distribution of food is celebrated, which is an introduction of an ecologically more conscious community.
With the international summer school, participants will gain experience in working in interdisciplinary teams and learn about ways to develop social innovations. In other words, participants will learn skills that will help them become agents of change and better team players in interdisciplinary groups while working on projects with tangible social effects. Therefore, the curriculum systematically focuses on improving the soft skills of the participants, presenting them with the best work methodologies through both theory and practice.

As an answer to growing economic and social problems in all their complexity can only be a comprehensive and multidisciplinary intertwined solution that grows out of cooperation and interdisciplinary participation.

UAU! (Urban Activation Unit) Temporary Utopia aims at reaching and being reached by a truly global audience, overcoming geographical and cultural differences, in order to contribute to finding possible answers to some of the relevant urban issues of the present times.

We believe ‘everything is architecture’ and consider the latter as one of the last remaining humanistic activities, in which one can read the traces of many subjects, processes and compromises. The architectural project can still be considered as the convergence point of many different knowledge which must find a balance in order for it to be realized. Temporary Utopia is born from our interest in those alternative forms of pedagogy, capable of collecting and interpreting the many signals coming from communities around the world, asking for more just and accessible spaces and cities where everyone feels welcome and that everyone can equally call his/her own.
We aim at using collective intelligence and mutual exchange through design, in order to amplify people’s voices beyond ordinary borders, thanks to an educational program that is as complex and fun as it is solid and coherent. In said process, both listening before acting and having fun while doing is essential. By consequence we consider any design form as necessarily suspended between sustainable play and achievable dream, that’s why we believe in utopias as essential in order to rediscover the pleasure of architecture, outside academies.

CTEC502 - Creative Tech Vlog
Our first assignment was to create a 4 minute vlog explaining my path to creative technology and how I envision my future within the industry. This was my take (Which ended up being a bit longer than 4 minutes but I had a lot to say and 4:30 minutes was the best I could do hehe).
youtube
Transcript:
Everyone has a life, it is what we do with it, as individuals, that makes us unique and gives us the possibility to create a meaningful impact in our society and even the wider world
Kalimera, Talofa Lava, Hello. My name is Elias Kaleta and I am currently studying a bachelor of Creative Technologies at Auckland University of Technology. I have travelled a long path to end up to where I am today; A path that ranges from studying English and Media, Film & TV to Psychology and Computer Science. I studied most of these things because I thought they were, “tried and true” career paths where I would go right through it and have a job lined up. The issue was, I wasn’t passionate about it. Throughout high school and my first attempts at university, I would do great at the practical aspects but when it came to exams, I struggled. I find myself to be a very hands-on and kinaesthetic learner but the current educational system forced me to think that theoretical learning was the only way I could succeed in my chosen career path. After all these failed attempts at learning, I realised that maybe it wasn’t the content that I wasn’t enjoying, but the way that it was delivered. So I decided it was time for a new environment and four weeks into Creative Technologies at AuT and I can already tell things are different..
When I first enrolled into Creative Technology last year, my friends and family bombarded me with the question, ‘What is Creative Technology?”, and I would always respond, “It’s like a mix of design and computer science”. It wasn’t until recently I realised that couldn’t be more wrong of an answer. Sure, to some extent it encompasses elements of design and computer science, but creative technology is so much more than that. A generic but truthful answer, is that it is a multidisciplinary course which gives one the skillset to look at one issue through many different viewpoints. You see, at first Creative Technology seemed like such a hard thing to describe when all along, it was right there in the name, “Creative. Technology.”. It’s about finding new, creative and innovative ways to utilise pre-existing technology in our work, our art and just our lives in general. An example (though it may seem like an odd one), would be the issue of brushing your teeth in the morning and having a coffee ready for work; why do one at a time when you can do both? Create a toothbrush that when it is being used, it turns on your coffee maker so it is ready for you once you’ve finished the classic 2 minute brush. Okay, that may be a bad idea but I’m learning that, that’s okay. Bad ideas actually don’t exist, they’re all a part of the creative process which leads to better and more complex ideas.
A reason why Creative Technology is so unknown, is because it’s a rather new term. In 1993, Bran Ferren was one of the first people in the cooperate world to be given the title of a ‘Creative Technologist’ as a part of the Walt Disney Company. Disney’s CEO, Michael Eisner, relayed a message from Ferren which was that his broader mission, “…is to dream about the future and to show us new and innovative ways to tell stories.” [1] something I think perfectly describes the mindset a creative technologist should have. Ferren then went on to work on many different projects within the Walt Disney Company such as; Some amusement park rides like the Tower of Terror ride and the Indiana Jones Adventure ride, as well as many on-air television projects.
Now, Creative Technology is changing everything. An example of this is the way companies are marketing their products; companies like Coca Cola. Coca Cola has used technology to allow the consumer to interact with the company right from their phones with their ‘Sip and Scan’ campaign that allows the consumer to scan their bottle and win prizes. They have also implemented different interactive activities around the world like in Japan, where someone can play a dance-dance-revolution type game in order to receive a free coke can. [2] It is ideas like this, that make me excited to pursue a career in Creative Technology.
I’m hoping that this course will give me the opportunity to expand on my creative thinking and that it will supply me with the knowledge and direction to finetune my practical and mental skills. I want it to challenge me to criticise the way we use technology in our lives and find ways to change it for the better.
I have had a long, tiring path up to this point, but I finally feel like I have direction and that my career in Creative Technology will consist of projects that will benefit my society, my country, or even more eagerly, the world.

Ways to generate leads in a trade show

While it is true that social media today has transformed the game of promoting and marketing of business through online platforms, you cannot replicate the importance of certain old-styled professional events. Exhibitions or trade shows to date remains as one of the most effective forms of marketing strategy that can help you in enhancing your business and bring in some genuine connections which can help in boosting it. So if you are quite new to the concept of participating in exhibitions or trade shows, we have listed certain ways that help in making the most of your exhibition and generate new leads for you. Read below to know more about them: Create an impactful preshow campaign at times you could do everything just right when participating in an exhibition however still not generate any leads. This is so because the kind of work that you do which leads you towards the trade show is also far more important. This means that strategizing a proper preshow campaign place a very important role in order to make your participation on the day of the event a successful one. For this reason, you need to create a comprehensive campaign that will help in creating awareness about your company and most importantly generate good traffic to the booth. Make sure that you do not keep this promotion until the last minute. This is so because people need to know about your business and hence running a campaign at least a month before and a trade show or an exhibition is very important. Noodoe EV Moves US Headquarters To Irvine – Offices to Facilitate North America Expansion
IRVINE, Calif., March 25, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — Noodoe EV, a global leader in electric vehicle (EV) charging technology, has relocated its US Headquarters to Irvine, California. The announcement was made by Noodoe CEO Jennifer Chang. Noodoe’s move to larger quarters is in direct response to growing demand for its EV charging technology in North America. The new address is 9351 Irvine Blvd., Irvine, Ca 92618.
“After an extensive search, we chose Irvine for its incredible talent base in all things tech.” says Chang. “Like Noodoe, Irvine is growing fast. Like the city, we’re high tech, meticulously planned and diverse. We couldn’t think of a better place to expand our EV technology in North America than basing our headquarters here.” The new headquarters features a large kiosk demonstration area and adjoining warehouse.
Last year, Noodoe recorded a record number of installs in the North American market, including EV charging stations in casinos, hotels, parking lots and shopping malls. The company also launched “Powered By Noodoe,” a technology partnership program giving businesses everything they need to enter the EV charging market. The company wrapped up the year by “electrifying” L.A.’s iconic Biltmore Hotel with ten charging stations.
Noodoe was also recently named recipient of an award by Taiwan Excellence, a leader in promoting and recognizing innovative brands and products. The annual ‘Excellence Award’ represents the highest achievement awarded given to companies bringing revolutionary and high quality innovations to market. Noodoe was singled out for its service automation solutions (EV charging stations) that transform parking lots into hands-off revenue generators. Comments Chang, “Developers need to see Noodoe EV not only as a provider of EV charging technology, but a profit maker for all their properties, big and small.”

VR Challenge User Experience Research at Mercedes Benz Pop Up
We stopped by the new Mercedes Benz pop up shop in Orange County, CA, to check out their future retail auto showroom concept for high end luxury customers. Similar to the Tesla stores it was located inside a shopping mall with only a few select vehicles to check out, but unlike the Tesla stores, Mercedes new attraction are their VR driving stations, where you can sit inside a car simulator and test drive the newest AMG roadsters on a series of renown raceways. VR experiences are becoming more and more common in retail, with similar AR experiences already being done by from Audi, Porsche, and a few other auto makers. The Mercedes Benz VR driving experience graphics were actually a bit cartoonish compared to what’s out there in the VR world today, but the store itself was beautiful, had a strong branding presence and the feeling of luxury, with classy touch glass kiosks, an omnichannel portal to check other models, live DJ creating an upbeat vibe, and a private design studio to build your dream car! Mercedes Benz is promoting the store by offering a $1000 credit to customers if they purchase a car at this location. The pop up opened on April 1st and will run through May 26th. Check it out if you’re near South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa. The shop is located right next to the carousel.

Installing a tea vending machine for the office is a great way to offer your employees a convenient and hassle-free way to get their daily dose of tea or coffee. The installation process is relatively simple, and all you need is a few things to get started.
The first requirement is a 230V 16 AMP 3 Pin Socket. This is a standard power socket that is found in most office spaces. You will need to ensure that there is a socket close to the area where you plan to install the vending machine. This socket will provide the necessary power to the vending machine, and it is important to ensure that it is functioning properly before you begin the installation process.
The second requirement is a 20 Ltr. Water Jar or RO Connection. This is necessary to provide water to the vending machine for making tea and coffee. If you do not have a 20-liter water jar, you can also connect the vending machine to an RO system. An RO system is a water purification system that is commonly used in offices to provide clean drinking water. Connecting the vending machine to an RO system ensures that the tea and coffee made by the vending machine are made with clean and purified water.
Once you have the requirements, you can begin the installation process. The first-time set-up time for the vending machine is approximately 45-60 minutes, so it is important to set aside some time for this.
Finally, you will need to configure the vending machine settings using the mobile app-based control. The vending machine comes with a mobile app that allows you to configure various settings such as the amount of sugar, milk, and water used for each cup of tea or coffee. Once you have configured the settings, you can start using the vending machine. Overall, a Cherise tea vending machine is a great investment for any office looking to boost productivity, reduce time wastage, increase employee satisfaction, improve employee relationships, and promote corporate wellness. Scott Kildall on Data, Water, Territory and What it Means to Be Human
Scott Kildall is a new media artist who has been working at the intersections of art, technology, and education for the past 15 years. He works with datasets related to the natural sciences, questioning how they interact with human civilisations. We are very excited to welcome Scott, who joins us from San Francisco, for our four-week intensive course Data & Society. It will take place 3-28 June, 2019, at our home-base in Berlin. In this interview we talk about data as a medium, water, and being a human in today’s time.

Tell me a bit about what brought you to the work you’re currently doing. Did you always have an interest in working with data?
My dad was a famous computer pioneer and one of the gifts he gave me was the DNA of a math-scientist combined with a distinct curiosity about life. I taught myself to code in my 20s and ran a small software company during the early dot-com years. It was here that I begin to comprehend the structures of hidden data.
In the 90s, I quickly discovered the role of an engineer: solving technical problems and building things for the specifications of others, to be uninspiring. Also, because I have deep concerns about the economic inequality of capitalism, I never felt at ease in a corporate landscape, which is where this kind of work usually takes place.
I left that world and slowly got trained as an artist, embraced new methodologies for thinking, and built my life around creating artwork that repurposes technology in various ways. However, from my early years, that peek into the underbelly of code, the way things are stored, archived and who owns them, has stuck with me ever since.
Data used as a medium, how did this begin for you?
In 2012, I took a full-time job at the the Exploratorium, a world-famous museum of art, science, and curiosity in San Francisco and worked there for about 18 months as a New Media Exhibit Developer. I felt like I needed a break from the art world because I was bottoming out psychologically and this job was an opportunity to work with scientists and create exhibits in a forward-thinking institution.
Much of my work there involved co-developing interactive kiosks that involved data in some way or another, both on the screen and off for the Life Sciences Gallery. It was specifically the physical data visualization work I did that inspired me. For example, I worked on an artwork called Tidal Memory, which was a series of 10-foot high columns of water, 24 in total. I wrote code and developed electronics that scraped tide buoy data and pumped water into each column to match the current tide level. Essentially, it acted as a life-sized tide table, which changed each day.
When I left the Exploratorium at the beginning of 2014, I returned to making artwork and began generally to work with data in some form or another. Beginning with an art residency at Pier 9, Autodesk, I began working with code and digital fabrication, specifically 3D printing. I was amazed because I finally could easily combined the two practices: writing code and building physical objects into various forms.
I left that world and slowly got trained as an artist, embraced a new methodologies for thinking and built my life around creating artwork that repurposes technology in various ways.
New media art is constantly changing in relation to new technologies. As a technologist and artist, do you have a specific practice for consolidating your technical choices and artistic concepts?
For me, technology is like a material. I’m a generalist with tech and am very good at a lot of things: electronics, 3D modeling, code, fabrication, etc. but an expert in none. It’s relatively easy for me to quickly master an emerging technology and because I am self-taught, I pick up tools in a chaotic, unorthodox way. So, the technology itself is less important than how the technology expresses itself in current culture.
For example, this year I’m doing some new work in VR now because the tools are accessible but the field of artistic expression is still wide open. And, more importantly, VR creates a simulated physical space that feels like reality but it’s entirely like an interior psychological space, and so is rich in so many ways.
All my work involves the tension between territory and technology. As new technologies get introduced but before they are co-opted, territory — physical, economic, political and so on — reconfigures itself. It’s at this point that I try to leverage relevant technologies to make new work.
I’m just trying to do my little part, which involves bringing art to a wider audience. This teaches imagination and creative critique, which I believe helps with the political problems in a way that give people hope and helps shape an alternative future.

I see that fluidity is a major theme in your work. Using liquids as a medium in Cybernetic Spirits (2018), in Sonaqua (2017), sonifying water quality and in Water Works (2014) you investigate the water infrastructure of S.F. Is fluidity something you think about in your life and practice?
I’m more excited about water than fluidity. Water is the basis for all life and ecosystems. We tend to forget that waterways are interconnected. It’s an easy (free) material to work with but also so difficult because it leaks everywhere. The political issues are huge: ownership, containment, pollution and more. The aspects of water are so multi-faceted. So, it’s something that I’ve been returning to recently.
The Cybernetic Spirits artwork uses a similar technology with an entirely different conceptual framework. This work separates fluids from the body — using things like blood and breast milk — but also puts fluids like gasoline and kombucha into the same electronic organism, so it’s more about machines and the physical expression of fluids we worship than water issues.

Another major theme in your work, which you mention, is territory and technology. In one of your most recent works, Flagscape (2018), you use United Nations data to construct a virtual world of economic exchanges. There are no geographic borders, rather, a world defined by trade. How else are concepts of territory, boundaries and nations applied in your work?
The overarching theme for my work is around the interplay between territory and technology. Data is one part of this larger conversation. With Flagscape, I’m doing more explicit investigations around borders and national identity and looking at transnational trade in VR. As you fly around different pieces of data related to a particular nation, you hear that country’s national anthem. All of these sounds similar: puffed up grand gestures that utterly fail when you fly in VR free from military parades and border checkpoints.
With territory and technology, the artwork ranges from geographical processes to absurd gestures. For example, Strewn Fields, depicts how meteorite impacts data as etchings into stone. Asteroids don’t care about national boundaries and what this work does is to capture a one-time kinetic event — a rock descending from space and impacting the earth — as a static object that will last for centuries.
Other work such as Moon v Earth (2011, reprised 2018), is not at all a data-related work, but rather depicts a narrative of a moon colony run by billionaires which asserts its independence and then wages a war on Earth. As viewers, we see only fragments of the results (in the form of an analog-augmented reality artwork).
It's sometimes hard to imagine how we can use and apply data to communicate certain issues and ideas. Do any previous student works which come to mind, which you can share with us?
I teach data-visualization in San Francisco to design students and there, we take a more traditional approach of starting with Tufte and introduce them to marks as symbols for expression of data. These students are completely new to visualization and are looking for careers in design, so it is professional-based with a practical inquiry into effective design techniques as well as talking about eye-tracking, bias and a host of other relevant issues.
My personal passion in bringing data-visualizations into physical space and the the most exciting project I’ve done thus far is working at an American Arts Incubator in Bangkok in 2017. There I taught a month-long workshop and produced an exhibition for 20 Thai students along the theme of river health and physical data sculptures.
Much of the process was around ideating and thinking through forms, doing experiments, and then finally producing the final exhibition. One effective project by the students was called “River Voices”, which was created in collaboration with members of the Ladprao community, who are affected by the health of the Chao Phraya River.
They conducted two interconnected workshops during the project development period. For the first one, they collected data through a t-shirt exchange where community members dipped their shirts into local canal water. They then printed a map with data collected from the t-shirts. For the second workshop, they worked with children from the community to draw their stories of river life and health. Finally, they designed “healthy ingredients” onto a “River Detox” logo, which they printed on new t-shirts and gifted to all community workshop participants.

Can you tell me about Xenoform Labs? How did this come about?
In August 2018, I left my part-time job at Autodesk, where I was running their electronics lab in their Pier 9 maker environment and was trying to figure out next steps. After some soul-searching, I decided to open up my home in San Francisco to artists from other parts of the world to experiment and shape new work, rather than to refine and show it.
I was inspired by the idea of doing something on a smaller scale and have ample space in my house for my own studio and hosting others. To make it simple, it’s an invitation-only art residency program for new media artists — people who work with art + technology with criticality — from outside of the Bay Area.
It provides free housing and a studio space for one month for one artist/couple. The studio includes digital media, virtual reality hardware, media production and light fabrication. I host events for the artists to connect with local thinkers, artists, and curators in the San Francisco Bay Area. The website is: xenoformlabs.com/.
I think there are two things that I’ve learned: first, take care of yourself and second, be open to all new possibilities.
Ok, let’s bring the questions back down to yourself as a human. What are some of the plans you have for the future? Projects, trips, some films you want to see!
There’s always so much to do! I am passionate about mountain biking, so wherever I go, I’ll be looking for that. I hear Teufelsberg in Berlin is a nice spot. For future projects, I’m putting a lot of time into working on audio synthesis with plants sensors, amplifying their electrical activity and creating outdoor concerts and synthesis. I’ll be collaborating on some of this with Michael Ang, an artist and close friend from Berlin in the coming months, and am super-excited to work with him.
This year, I have plans to work in Slovenia, Panama, and Thailand for this project and am particularly excited around engaging with the local people and natural environment.
You’ve traveled quite a bit! Can you share with us some of the things you’ve learned by working with peoples of different cultures, in different settings and with distinct ways of working?
I think there are two things that I’ve learned: first, take care of yourself and second, be open to all new possibilities. The first means that you do things like meditation or centering or having a comfortable pillow or whatever else you need to calm your inner self. I pay a lot of attention to my internal energy and check-in all the time. Then, you can go out and be a superstar with others.
When I mean open to new possibilities, what I’m getting at is that the reality of your experience will be completely different than what others tell you.
When I traveled to Thailand for the AAI project, I was told many things about Thai people, for example that they were always happy and that the culture was extremely patriarchal. Both of these things were not the case.
My Thai students were very close to American students in so many ways. I did discover other aspects that were distinct about my workshop, for example that if someone was stuck, that the others in the group who were faster would stop and help that person out. So, I later translated this into my workshops and teaching styles in more Western countries where this may not be the case since it helps keep the class going and is more rewarding for the group.
What is the change you want to see in the world?
That’s a tough one. There is so much. Right now, we’re in a very troubling set of times, with the rise of anti-immigration fears, climate change, economic inequality and so much more. I’m just trying to do my little part, which involves bringing art to a wider audience. This teaches imagination and creative critique, which I believe helps with the political problems in a way that give people hope and helps shape an alternative future.
For those of us who are interested in data, but are just starting to get our head around it, do you have any further readings, tips or projects to share?
Here are a few resources that are from several different angles:
I like the Data Stories Podcast.
There is a great wiki here on physical data visualizations
The book that I teach in my data-visualization classes is The Functional Art, by Albert Cairo.
For reading about Data and Society, the Bruce Schneier book, Data and Goliath is a must-read.
Data & Society, an intensive four-week program will take place between 3-28 June 2019, in Berlin, Germany. You can find more information on the program here, or apply directly over here.
