AvA6 EP1 SPOILERS

Alright peeps I'm joining in this chaos and you should all fear me This post has no plan or path this is just a ramble analysis of things I notice in the new episode so :D

EXPECT MAJOR SPOILERS, PLEASE WATCH THE EPISODE FIRST ^-^

Ok so like first off guys- maybe like- don't fire your glitch weapons in the middle of a crowded city?? This seems like a bad idea?? You guys are worse than the Avengers when it comes to collateral damage smh

Ok but Chosen stopping mid-chase to save that civilian by destroying the debris really goes to show how he's improved as a character, this guy went from destroying Alan's PC, to rampaging various sites with Dark, and now to this. Glad to see him as a proper hero now :D

I'm happy to see the ice powers coming back cuz after that one time he froze the Firefox I thought they just forgot about it lol

Chosen is Zeus now Also he just like creates a glacier 2 seconds later cool

Also quick shoutout to Alan's Desktop organization He has come a long way

I find it funny how much everyone focused on this clip in the trailer especially, like "Oh no does Orange get mad at Alan again?? Is this related to Vic???" and the reality of it is "lol wanna fight me guys?" "Sure sounds fun :D" Alan you have bamboozled us again

I find this moment rather interesting So after Alan pulls up the thingy and sends them all flying then crashing down, Red appears to be acting like they hurt their head and Yellow notices and crawls over to see if they're ok (Awwwijascsdhljw) but as soon as they do Red just punches em?? However then Yellow puts their hands up in a way almost to be like "whoa whoa it's just me" and then Red accepts the comfort. Idk I just find it interesting, like Red is still in fight-mode after the sparring match and doesn't quite register that it's Yellow touching them at first XD

Chosen: "COME ON DO IT, DO THE EYE THING" Orange: "WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT IDK HOW TO DO THAT" Chosen: "YES YOU DO JUST DO IT, LIKE THIS:" Orange: "AAAAAAAAA" *Tries to do laser-eyes with every ounce of focus they have*

Red: "uhhh are they ok-" Green: "Maybe you should stop them?" Blue: "yeahhh maybe-" Yellow: "Hmm, yes. Interesting"

Chosen: "UGH FORGET IT YOU'RE COMING WITH ME" Sticknapping 101

Aight but like where did this guy (Btw I'll call him Striker cuz that name was going around and it's cool) get this stuff? Has their group attacked a Desktop before and managed to steal enough UI to make this guy OP? Cuz he uses a lot of really crazy stuff during this fight and I can't help but wonder what poor animator woke up just to find the entire UI on their software missing lol

I love how Chosen really just pulls the "Throw the kid in the pool to teach them how to swim" on Orange and his powers here lol Then to Chosen's surprise it does not work "Aw shoot the kid is drowning now I gotta save them smh"

YEAHHHH ART POWERS Ok but actually though I find it interesting how differently the Pencil tool works outside a Desktop, like usually Orange like speed-draws the whole entire thing but out here it's like Ah yes, line scribble = E e l I mean it actually kinda makes sense, in the 3D world it'd be really difficult to draw anything really so the Pen just changes function a bit based on the environment

Poor Green does not enjoy climbing it seems :(

This guy can forever one-up everything "Ok but have you beat up a shark with your bare hands and won?

Ok but this guy's style is just like tribal or primitive and it's honestly pretty cool I have no clue what to call them though so that's up to the rest of the fandom to decide ':D

Also someone else on a different site suggested the name "Warnman" for this guy cuz he looks like the typical hazard sign guy who's always showing the dreadful things that will happen if you don't obey the sign and I think the name fits so Warnman is honestly my favorite of these guys just cuz of how wacky they are lol

Also this guy has to be like Anime Stick or something I do not understand this dude at all but they're sick

Let it be known that Warnman is canonically 2D

Dude how much charge do those electro-bullets hold if that thing is STILL zapping Chosen This poor guy Also the way Striker fights throughout this whole scene is so cool

I find it interesting and I think Alan pointed out in the reaction video (really funny btw you should go watch that too) That Striker is totally just messing with them before that, like sure he probably has to be close to the target to use the Pause attack but I like to think he was enjoying the fight before that and is only just doing it now cuz he's bored lol

Aight so the Rocket Group is the one hunting Chosen I wanna know though- why Chosen specifically? Are they just after all Hollowheads with the powers or is it just Chosen they want? Maybe they're after all of them but Chosen is the only one with a super known presence? Also who are these guys?? They seem to be just some independent group but do they hold any sort of actual authority over Stick City? Man I have so many questions

How do you pause fire-? Does it still burn? I assume not cuz I think it woulda burned the guys bringing him by now Man that's wacky but cool Also another question here is like, is that white box a containment unit or some sort of display case? I'm thinking more along the lines of containment but like he's already paused and they left the door open I think??

Aight now we're getting to the theory-fuel Why are they studying all this UI? Where'd they get this UI? Why do all these sticks look exactly the same??? Like I get that it's just supposed to represent a large group of workers and stuff but they are all exactly the same shade-

A h a A h a a a . . . VICTIM???? VIC MY GUY WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE HOW ARE YOU ALIVE?? LIKE I GET YOU'RE PROBABLY MAD AT ALAN LIKE KILLING YOU AND ALL BUT WHAT DO YOU WANT WITH CHOSEN AND EVERYONE?? I have many questions Also I am wondering if all the UI decor in his office is just art or what, are they trophies maybe? They probably had to get the UI for Striker's setup somewhere, did they raid Desktops before? Are those trophies from animators he's beaten? Man Idk but this is so interesting My final take on the episode: AAAAAAAAAAAAAA LET'S GOOO AvA 6 HYPEEE :D

I've been feeling discouraged about my art recently. Could you possibly give me some tips?

Ok I wanna preface this by saying I am by no means a professional or even "good" artist, BUT I shall try!

These are all tips by a digital artist so I can't help much when it comes to other forms

This got long so under the cut, 20 ART TIPS TIME LETS GOOO

1.Try to draw most days, or at least once a week. The more often the better BUT I don't mean like hardcore, a complex drawing every single day (recipe for burnout right there). I mean like even just 30 seconds of SOMETHING. You can draw shapes, maybe fill a page with circles. There are programs u can find online that give you like a min to sketch something and challenge yourself in a really short time frame. Guess what?? When you draw often you're building those neural pathways (I think) and the more you do it the easier it'll get

2. Don't obsess over making stuff look perfect on the first draft... or at all. I recommend making a "draft" layer or 2... or 3 over the initial sketch. The more you go over it and change stuff, the better it'll be. Also, If you spend hours on it and still hate it?? Who cares! You put in the work and now you have an idea out on paper that you can go over some time in the future and improve if you chose to.

3. DON'T DELETE STUFF!!! Unless it's literally just mindless scribbles, save everything you draw. Like I said, you can go over it again and improve it someday. You can also look back at it in like a year and compare your art to see where you've improved! I deleted all my old art from beyond like a year ago and regret it so much. Don't berate yourself for the stuff you need to work on, be proud of what improvements you've still made

USE REFERENCES!!!!!!! Please just do it, I know it's annoying but I promise it helps so so much

4. Invest drawing tablet, preferably one with buttons that you can map to undo, sketch, fill and such. This will make drawing sooooo much easier (and faster). My quality of art has improved just from drawing the same thing and redoing it like 20 times at a time, and it takes way less time when I can just click a button to do that. It might seem daunting at first but it quickly becomes instinctual. This is the one I got and I'm quite happy with it! It's got good sensitivity, a pen you don't have to replace batteries for or even recharge, and it's mid-range so not wayy too expensive. However, if you're just starting out, I'd recommend this (I got the corded version but I assume it's about the same) since it's small, cheap and you can focus on just learning basics like improving lines n such.

5. Use a bigger canvas size. I started out with 1000x1000, and that's still fine for smaller stuff and doodles, for better quality I recommend bigger sizes. If it's too small it'll look all weird and pixel-y

6. THERE ARE LITERALLY SO MANY FORMS OF ART, maybe the one you're trying just isn't something you vibe with! There's mosaics, digital, traditional (and all the many sub-categories of that), sculpture, photography, etc. All are equally valid and you will improve in your craft if you choose something that 1. you enjoy, 2. are consistent with it!

7. SEGEMENT OUT THE LIMBS drawing DCA stuff for over a year has helped me improve on anatomy sooo much literally just because it forced me to think of each part of a limb in terms of segments, shapes- for instance, instead of an upper arm, I think of a tube which connects to a circle that allows it to rotate and another tube... followed by a weird shape for a hand that connects 5 smaller tubes, whiCH ARE THEN SEPERATED IN TO 3 TUBES EACH. Yes it sounds confusing but breaking it down like that instead of just trying to figure things out helped an absolute shitton

8. Have some kinda hobby that makes you draw frequently. For instance I have a discord sona I draw a new pfp for every month or so. It's a simple design and since the pfp won't show many flaws I can pump out lots of art for it in a small timeframe and I find it relaxing. I've actually improved a shitton just drawing pfps This is one of my first pfps from maybe 2 yrs ago compared with one of my most recent ones

(yes I'm a bit of a furry deal with it) It's cute, there's nothing wrong at all with it! However, you can see how things have changed.

See how the lines are a lot more even, less jagged? The proportions of the shoulders are much wider, the ears aren't just popping out of the hair, the shading makes a bit more sense and isn't just thrown around at random. There's also a broader range of color, with a few bright highlights to catch the eye, colored shading I think as well. The former is just like 3 simple colors. These are all things I learned from drawing pfps consistently.

9. CONSISTENCY IS KEY!! And FUN, if you have fun drawing it'll be a lot easier to do frequently

10. Whether it's drawing pfps, blorbos or landscapes, find something that brings you joy and it'll be MUCH easier to stick to. Draw, draw a lot, do not worry about "good" art and "bad" art cause there's literally no such thing. Compare what you draw now with what you do in like a year or two from now and I promise, if you're consistent, use references and are patient, you WILL amaze yourself with how much you improve.

11. Challenge yourself! Join secret santas (assuming you know you can complete it within the allotted timeframe), draw your friends' sona/ocs (if they're cool with it), do palette challenges, do monthly stuff like drawtober or whatever it's called (BUT I don't recommend doing something every single day for a month cause again, gonna cause mega burnout)

12. Draw when the inspiration comes, it will move your hand. These days I make much better quality art that I'm proud of when I just let inspiration flow through me instead of begrudgingly making myself draw. You shouldn't be forcing yourself!! If you are, you probably are burned out by either drawing too much, feeling a lack of confidence or some other stuff going on irl. Inspiration comes naturally, and when it doesn't it's prolly your mind trying to communicate that something's up. If resting a week or two doesn't help, take a deeper look at your life and see if the artblock is a symptom of something else (for me it's most often depression).

13. At the same time, sometimes you just need to start. Kinda on the previous point of lacking confidence, often we scare ourselves out of even trying. It might feel insurmountable. Nah, try. If all you can do is a wobbly, vague sketch?? You got the idea out!! Start drawing fuckin eyeballs or something, just start. Sometimes the hardest part is just facing a blank canvas and putting a couple lines on it

14. Not all brushes are equal. Some just make drawing easier- at least for me. I dunno the science behind it but when I use my sketch brush (it's got a similar look to pencil) rather than my lineart brush it makes drawings just... look better. Also using thicker lines in general helps. Why?? NO CLUE, maybe thinner ones just show flaws easier or intersect better or something.

15. Music or some other distraction can help, idk why. Some days I like to have a movie/show/podcast going in the background for a mild distraction that keeps me slightly stimulated on other stuff even as I draw- maybe it increases brain activity or??? No idea. Sometimes just listening to music. Sometimes I need total silence. Do what works for you! Give lots of different stuff a try, you may love drawing while listening to a podcast in the background

16. Take breaks!! The pomodoro method works with art as well. Every 25 mins or so, take a 5 min break. Get up, stretch, get some water, maybe watch a yt vid. Call ur friend and tell them you love and cherish them. Then get back to it and you will feel oh so refreshed. After maybe 3 rounds take a 15 min or longer break and then repeat if you still feel like it

17. SLEEP IS INCREDIBLY FUCKING IMPORTANT you will see a deep decline in the quality of your art when you're tired, plus you just feel like shit and art is about feeling good and expressing yourself. Sleep is important, even tho yes I stay up too late drawing most nights, I do my absolute best to get at least 7 hours of sleep every night, as should you!!

18. DO NOT BE SCARED OF STICK FIGURES AND MESSY SKETCHES, they're actually the best way to start bc 1. it's a quick way to get an idea out before you forget it 2. the finished piece will actually look a lot more fluid since you weren't spending all that time obsessing over making the first draft look perfect- which often just makes it look stiff. You can do a whole lot with stick figures. Focus on that good ol' line of action.

19. Random but when drawing the face, I like to first make a circle and then like a "mask" over it for the actual face. For me it just makes sense. Then two lines, one up/down and one left, right, it'll make it easier to align the eyes and ears. In general, the ears usually go where the "mask" begins and just below the left/right line

20. Finally surround yourself with people who encourage you. I grew up in an environment where people would gawk at stuff my sibling drew and ignore me bc they were ~naturally talented~ and it made me not want to draw at all.

Well guess what?? Now that I spend time with people who encourage me and genuinely care about my interest in art I've improved a lot bc I have the motivation, the joy of showing ppl who care about me new pieces. If people in your life aren't encouraging you, or gods forbid insulting your art (excluding constructive criticism that you've explicitly asked for) then TOSS EM OVERBOARD THE BOAT OF LIFE and find people who will treat you with the love and respect you deserve

P.S

This isn't a tip, just a recommendation: Chicory, a colorful tale. It's a game where u play as a cute lil dog who gets a magical paintbrush that lets you color the world. The only issue? You have no ~talent~. My gods, this game struck a cord with me.

Feeling like you don't have any talents that come naturally to you. Being overlooked even when you try your best. Feeling like a complete joke when you try to pick up the brush (or in this case stylus) because there are so many "real" artists and you're not one of them.

Also the things people say and how they can affect you even when not intentional. Damn. It's just a beautiful game. It's made by the same people who made Wandersong, another absolute banger game with a character who is seen as a joke and I cannot recommend them enough.

bonus tip bc why the fuck not: OVERLAYS!!!!!!! In clip paint studio you have all these layer options, I can never memorize what they all do so I just make like an ombre color layer over my base colors and try all of them to see what looks cool

Not to sound like?? Pretentious I guess?? (Although I don’t like that word) but something happened to me and my art this year

Like for years I had been reluctant to do traditional art bc I thought I’d suck at it, it’d been so long and my digital was fine, so what was the point? Then I realised just how burnt out I was, had been for a while, and just crashed.

During that crash I picked up an old sketchbook that I had only doodled on like 2 pages in and tore them out. I was just trying to get myself to draw ANYTHING. I got coloured pencils instead of graphite bc I always found just grey drawings boring, and it works so well and getting me engaged in traditional art.

It’s at the point now where traditional art is my favourite medium and I feel genuine joy doing it again. I’ve become excited about new mediums and tried a bunch of new materials, my drive to draw hasn’t been this strong since I was a kid

I’ve also stopped trying to box my art into one specific style, no longer trying to be a furry artist, or a kids book artist or any ___ artist, just an artist. I can draw in so many different ways, I need to stop feeling like I need to choose one to roll with forever. Letting this happen has helped improve my art and my relationship with my art so much and I hope it’s noticeable, it is to me at least. It’s given me more space to experiment and kinda merge these styles in some areas and I’m really enjoying it

The possibly pretentious part, but I feel this stuff is important, is that I’m actually buying books for the art AND READING THEM, AND ENJOYING THEM. Bc of my adhd I kinda stopped reading all together when I was 12, I had no interest in books anymore or cared to absorb physical art or even learn art history and stuff like that. But now it’s like I’m suddenly refreshed, seeking new things and engaging with art around me and I love all that stuff. I even have an interest in like fine art and wanna go to galleries?? Something I never thought I’d wanna do

The question “what do you wanna do with your life?” Has always confused me and I’ve never had a solid answer other than “survive”, but I was thinking about it the other night and it just so easily popped into my head “I just want to create and consume art for the rest of my life”, and now I’m trying to get into the local art scene

I’m just rambling bc this is the best I’ve felt, creatively, in a painfully long time. But if you’re feeling burnt out, just put the pen down for a lil bit and try something else

you hear someone walking on your ceiling, and suddenly someone crashes down! Oh its berri nvm. SO LIKE,,,,, ANY ART TIPS/TRICKS/WISODM THAT YOU HAVE OH GREAT CAT WITH HANDS???👀👀👀

*catches u and cradles u in my arms* young flower bud, let me endow you with the wisdom of Me.

Lol jk tho i barely draw at ALL believe it or not, but that doesn't mean I'm talented or anything. I just keep a few points in mind, and i hope these points are helpful to anyone who only picks up the pen occasionally, yet passionately;

1) Dont be afraid to take risks and try new things. This can take a lot of your time, and you're not gonna be pleased with the first one or two redraws. It is going to take a LOT of retries. But it's fun if you like a challenge, and can make you feel proud even if it kinda looks sloppy, because hey! Progress is progress, and when you're doing something you've never done before, its a lot easier to see yourself go from zero to something. And in the end? You're learning a lot more than you would from drawing what you already know how to draw.

2) Take the time to look at tutorials. Tutorials for drawing methods, for how to use your art program, for how to reduce distractions in your environment, etc. Even if some or a lot dont work, you may just find a few things that change your entire experience and make things SO much more efficient.

3) If you're drawing for others, draw a lot of it for yourself. When you dont draw that much, you dont keep that much attention. Especially if your blog is mostly reblogs lol. There may not be enough people responding to all the effort you put into your art for them to enjoy, so you have to make sure you yourself enjoyed it. If you're like me and you need a lot of time for your unsteady, unskilled hands to put to use the drawing techniques you just learned from that YT video, it's gonna be. Stressful. Part of making that stress the good kind (because believe it or not, it exists) is looking forward to what you're doing, whether it be the journey or the end result. But, with that in mind...

4) Take breaks, don't overdo it. Slow down. Take a deep breath. Scribble on another drawing you're never gonna show anyone. Stand up, get a drink, sleep- heck, take a day off drawing! If you're worried that your passion is going to fizzle out before you finish your project, just know that doing it all at once can cause burnout, especially for someone who doesnt draw often. Dont just make good art; make art a good experience.

5) Admire your own art. Go on. Go ahead. Let the dopamine flow through your brain at the sight of your masterpiece. You know you wanna (at least when it's fresh). By inspecting your art closely, it gives you the opportunity to see what you like about what you've done, and what couldve gone better. I decided that I rather liked adding stupid lil elbow bumps to my characters, but realized i could make them too bumpish. Also, looking at your art for a while instead of leaving it behind immediately just kinda.. makes all the effort seem more worth it, somehow.

6) You don't always have to try to improve. I dont think i need to explain this one. Just try not to pressure yourself into always improving. Improve when you wanna, regress when you feel like it, and stick to your standards when you're up for it. Again, make art a good experience.

7) Art isn't always in the aesthetic. If you keep that in mind, depending on what you're drawing, you can make your art leagues more interesting by adding other features of art. Interesting facial expressions! Quirky body language! Way too many swirlies everywhere! Ugly angles! Jokes! Symbolism! Things that arent exactly pretty, yet still meaningful. Or maybe something completely meaningless, yet still fun. Etc. In my very humble opinion, ive always preferred jokes within art and clever designs over pretty colors and clean lines. People will love your art for whatever you put in it, so long as you do it with heart and passion. And you'll love your own art more for it, too. (I love laughing as i struggle to keep my lines straight for my joke comics)

8) Finally, don't try to be super original. I'm not saying you should steal other people's ideas, or that even trying to be original is an impossible endeavor. I'm just saying that the point of art was never to be original. I cant say what the point is exactly, because i'm not a real artist lol. I draw to get my ideas across, whether or not theyre cliche and overused. I just wanna share with people. Perhaps others have similar ideas they wanna share, or they have reasons entirely their own to make art. But the point of art is not to be original - so dont stress about it. Think about why you really make art, and how that makes you happy.

There are a billion more contextual pieces of advice i could talk on, but in my limited experience, this is all i can think of so far. Thank you for asking, berri :3c i think it's real cool how you're collecting all the bits of advice you can from everyone.

(How I Learned) How To Read Irken: A Guide

Okay, I’m finally making this post.

If you’ve been following me for a while, you might have caught on that I can read Irken. When I started, I was completely confused over wether or not I was teaching myself correctly, how long it’d take, et cetera. But I’ve finally hashed it out for myself, and I thought:

Why not make a guide for anyone else who wants to learn but has no idea where to start?

So that’s what I’m doing. Some disclaimers, though:

- This is what worked for me. It may or may not work for you, I’m not sure. I think it’s a pretty good method, though.

- Reading Irken and Writing Irken are two different skillsets. I’m gonna show you how to do both, but don’t worry if you’re better at one than the other.

- This will probably take a while of daily (or near-daily) practice to learn. It’s not impossible, it’s not super challenging, but it’s not super easy, especially if you have memory problems like I do. (For context: I started in September. But I also have a really shitty memory so, like. It might take less time for you.)

Okay! Let’s do this!

First off, you’d probably do well downloading the Irken font for practice purposes. Messing around with it and typing in it is fun, and can help!

You’ll also need a notebook. It’s not required, but having it all in one place is super convenient. (And, if it’s tiny enough, you can carry it around whenever, and also have it on hand to whip out at cons.)

The first thing I did was write each individual letter over and over and over again. This is what’s at the start of my notebook, and writing the letters over and over helped me remember which were which. I also had to focus pretty hard on what letter this actually was, this is tedious as hell but it’s not something you can do mindlessly.

This is what my notebook looks like. Don’t worry about those simplified versions of the letters yet, but you’re gonna wanna leave room for them. Don’t worry about learning simplified/handwritten until later, it helps recognition if you really have to focus on actually drawing the letters, at first.

(And yes, I know my pen is really smudgy. And that my H’s suck.)

After this, three letter words are your friend. Pick just, common three letter words you know, and write them down a lot. I have just, the Irken for “THE” written in the margins of my class notebooks a TON. Once you feel like you can remember that word well, go onto another 3 letter word with a different set of letters. Recognition = good, so pick something you like, use all the time.

While I was doing this, I tried to string together Irken letters I knew into like, coherent phrases. I was very bad at this at first. Acronyms are your friend here, lmao. (I don’t think I can count the number of times I’ve written ‘u r a qt pie’ in my notebooks.) It doesn’t matter what you write, just that it makes coherent sense.

There are gonna be some uncommon letters that are gonna be hard to practice, like W and Z, off the top of my head. For Z, that was easy. I just wrote ZIM over and over and over. For W... I used UWU. You laugh now, but the absurdity of it cements that I will always recognize those two letters.

Four letter words are also good. (Please, absolutely write “FUCK” over and over in order to remember letters. I encourage it.)

There is also the absolute cuntwaffles. Y’know how in English, b, p, d, g, all look kinda the same? Yeah, Irken has that too.

The I and Z don’t look that similar now, but good luck without a translation guide. By this point, you should have memorized a good chunk of the Irken alphabet, and be able to recognize some others when you see them. If you’ve been writing common three- or four-letter words, it’s likely you’ve been using letters very common in the English language. Which brings us to our next stage, and the actual fun part:

READING!

You’re gonna want a translation guide on hand in these early stages, you will need it. The main goal of this stage is to read anything in Irken you can get your hands on- but start small! Fanart with Irken in it was a godsend to me. It’s not that long, so it’s not overwhelming. I did need to look up some letters at the beginning, and I read really slowly, but that’ll change quickly if you keep up with it! The specific fanarts I used are:

@inimoose ‘s The Last Irken comic, specifically chapter one: part one, and chapter two: part two have a lot of Irken. But I’d recommend reading the whole comic; it’s good!

@xryn-art ‘s Linguistic Au’s first comic has a good chunk of Irken! The other comics do have some, but it’s all translated. Still good practice, though, if you wanna... read them......... ;) ;) ;)

Yes, this segment was partially a way for me to plug my favorite fan-artists, (or at least the ones that use Irken,) sue me. It’s my guide and I make the rules here.

(I am very sorry if I bothered any of you by @’ing you.)

But just some sources isn’t enough, so I introduce you to browser fonts. And changing yours to Irken.

It will not effect everything in your browser, and it can be toggled on and off, so don’t worry. If you really want, you can download a separate browser to change the font of, and leave your normal one be. It’d be convenient if you could, since having your browser font be Irken is inconvenient if you need to use Wikipedia, like, ever.

Here’s a guide for that, for Chrome, Firefox, Opera, and Internet Explorer for some reason. You’ll see four options to change, I just changed all of them. Not every page is going to have Irken on it, though. For me, Wikipedia is all in Irken, and so is TV Tropes. And some Tumblr blogs (PAKet Dimension’s is one, just in case you need a reason to go back there ;)) But it might be different for you.

Whatever it is, now you have a nice way to practice. I read Wikipedia articles on stuff I already knew about (so I wasn’t completely lost and could figure out what letters I didn’t know were from context clues,) but not a page I’ve read before in recent memory- you might just be recalling what the page said, instead of actually reading it.

And about the absolute cuntwaffle letters: yes, this will help you in recognizing which are which. Seeing the letters in context is always going to be much more helpful than just, a bunch of meaningless squiggles floating in the void.

At this point, I personally am much better at reading than writing Irken. It’s one thing to know a letter when you see it, and another to recall it and write it down from memory. Right now, I’m trying to write song lyrics and dumb little phrases in Irken, to improve my writing skills. Again, nothing too long, don’t overwhelm yourself. This sounds stupid, but Vines are good. When I don’t remember a letter, I just leave it blank and look it up after I’m done.

Another thing that helps is having a friend to practice with, or someone to just give you Irken phrases for you to translate.

Once you’re around this stage, you can try to learn simplified/handwritten Irken. You can also try to learn it before this, I started it around when I started reading fanart for practice, it’s up to you. This guide is a good starting point, but you don’t have to follow it exactly. This is your handwriting, do what feels natural for you!

(Also, don’t even worry about speedwrite Irken. That has no place in this holy land and frankly I am scared of it.)

And that’s... pretty much it! Most of the process is just... practicing a lot.

If this post does well, I might make a server for people who wanna learn Irken to practice together and stuff. It all depends if anyone even wants to learn Irken.

Also, if you wanna learn Irken numbers, here you go. But start with letters first, worry about numbers later. These are never used, aren’t even in the Irken font, and three of them look a lot like those cuntwaffle Irken letters.

Parent!Paranoia Sanders Sides AU!

No explanation, but I'll probably give the backstory later. For now: memes of Paranoia being an A-class parent and a chaos gremlin. (okay it started as memes but then just ended up as fleshing the AU out)

Paranoia, worried abt his kids: I'm uhhhh gonna go to my room see ya later light sides

Paranoia, sneaking back into the subconscious to check on his now teenaged children: I'm gonna leave duke a r a t that I found and thought looked cool

Paranoia, decorating for halloween bc "oh I'm sorry it's just the *sniffles * homesickness and we a l w a y s decorated for halloween" knowing full well all of his decorations are spider and witch themed bc they all like the salem witch trials

He leaves ONE fake snake in romans cereal and the lights just. Lose it. Hes kicked back into the subconscious to be chaotic with his kids, no new side, just the hours upon hours of film hes gotten from the bugs hed placed around the unconscious and a plan for the next several movie nights

He gets back and honesty is w h e e z i n g bc he was watching through the cracks and they make a fail compilation of the light sides

It takes like two months for the lights to just go insane with him around not due to yknow paranoia but bc hes such a gremlin

Patton asks if he was raised by wolves and he shoves mr sparkles at patton saying "take the issue of how I was raised up with my father, a-hole!!"

He doesnt actually curse he just yells "A-HOLE" so loud his kids can hear

They dont find out he's a dad until hes summoned and hes making cookies or smt with the kids and hes in a bright orange stereotypical witch outfit,,, corset and all and an apron that says "worlds most chaotic dad" on the front

And hes talking to one of the kids like "duke you can only put dish soap in your batch nesty cant digest it like you can"

Patton has an apron that says worlds least chaotic 'dad' courtesy of paranoia he made it himself(read: he stole pattons good apron and scribbled over it in sharpie)

Paranoia is always close to cackling when around the lights bc theyre newbs to any chaos

Roman and remus are twins but roman is the kind of kid to promptly forget abt anyone and logan n patton knew remus less than a day before he "disappeared" aka ran to the subconscious to explore and theyve just kinda blocked him out

Logans fine with it and actually likes the decorations tho he has asked if they had to be so brightly coloured and if there had to be so much glitter

I say decorations but hes a secret gremlin at heart and is super close to snickering at all times bc of the pranks

Also yes paranoia mildly dads roman it's great but he dads in an older sibling type way

So pat and logan are all "hes fitting in as an older brother well" and they tell him abt their approval of his older brother chaos and hes just like "no this is how I am deal with it nothing to do with brothers" bc hes not telling them abt his kids he doesnt trust them

Hes up at like midnight complaining with logan abt how patton doesnt let him be full chaos gremlin and logan says "mmmhmm did your parents in the dark side let you go wild with the chaos" and paranoia just,,,,, looks at him, dead in the eyes, and says "I dont have parents"

Cue logan being confusion

Paranoia, who genuinely didn't have parents: my parents are mr sparkles and the cat we've had for my entire life

Logan, who doesnt know they had a cat and is now worried bc "are you taking care of it???": ???

Paranoia: it's great for keeping the Others in line tho I just say "do your chores or no snuggle time with ms peregrin" and they do their chores while I'm making dinner

logan, incredibly confused: i don't know what you mean but ok

Paranoia: yeah theyre dumb but it's the level of dumb youd expect from my idiots

Or he slips up and refers to them as his children/kids and logan, not realizing they have an Actual Father/Sons relationship/age difference(paranoias abt.late 20s early 30s, remus defies all logic and has been about 9-10 for a few years now, and dees like early teens) just says "huh how.interesting would it be to have to deal with people your age that immature" and paranoias just. "Y e a h t h e y r e t o t a l l y t h e s a m e a g e a s I a m"

Duke is very much baby and upon seeing duke eating glue paranoia and honesty the idiots decided to try it too

theyre so dumb dsdhdhdhjsdh

They AREEE and paranoia, after discovering that duke has the h a r d i e s t immune system they decide to test exactly what he can and cannot safely eat bc he may be dumb but hes also def a Dad and he just wants to take care of his kids and if that includes making sure that duke can safely consume toilet bleach then so be it

Duke can eat almost anything short of actual cyanide but cyanide just makes him sick like stomach bug sick

He somehow gets a fever,,,,, he has it for like half an hour and paranoia is amazed

Hes in bed,,,,, paranoia makes him soup,,,,,, hes all better and running around again

Paranoias parenting rules:

Dont murder your brothers pls

Do your chores or no snuggle time with ms peregrin

Glitter is always a yes

Insults are fine just make sure you dont overstep and make your brothers insecure

It's a nice system for making chaos but keeping it manageable

They're all printed then the last one's scrawled in glitter gel pen and duke wrote a reply that said (I'm sorry yall dont have as good an immune system as I do)

There was a whole passive aggressive arguement on the bulletin for the next week before it got taken down to make room for dukes art

They eventually started just putting them up over each other and using magnets instead of thumbtacks

The entire bottom portion of the walls are painted in chalkboard paint so theres no unerasable drawing on the walls and the rest of the paint is magnetic so they can hang pieces everywhere

Dukes improving rapidly tho and doesnt like looking at his old art all the time so paranoia holds onto the drawings in several filing cabinets in case he ever wants to do redraws or needs his original prints to make something in the Imagination

Paranoia: if it tasted like lemons or citrus you need to stay off of most foods, stick to crackers and broth- don't eat anything heavy until you're sure you wont throw it up

anon this is. genuinely this is four months late and i am so sorry for that NFKDJGMKGLJ but on the bright side i didn’t forget !!!!!!

anyway i would like to add that this fic is sneakily (heavily) inspired by Influencer by littleficlets on ao3 yes i’ve talked about it a hundred times before no i will never stop anyway. please enjoy this silliness and keep in mind that when i started writing it it WAS pride month so it made a little bit more sense. just. pretend it’s still june. and like. that there’s no virus adfgjfkgjkgjdf

“You’re going to blind people,” Michael tells Luke as he dabs glitter on his cheekbones.

Luke frowns briefly at him before returning to his reflection. “You’re just jealous.”

“I’m serious. There are lights on you, like, for most of the show. You’re going to blind all of our fans.”

“With your beauty,” Ashton (un)helpfully contributes from his bunk, where he’s doing something that’s probably makeup, but Michael’s not sure. “And overall sexiness.”

“Thank you,” Luke says.

“No,” Michael says. “With your fucking glitter. We already know you’re gay, Luke.”

“It’s pride month,” Luke says, pouting. “I’ll be as gay as I want.”

Michael rolls his eyes. Like Luke needs to keep telegraphing that he likes guys. But if that’s how he wants to express himself, fine. He can glitter it up all he likes.

Michael doesn’t feel like he needs to go all out with the pride makeup, but Luke had kind of insisted that they do a pride makeup night at least one night of June, so here they all are, in various states of undress as the tour bus chugs along, and occupying every mirror or iPhone front-facing camera in a desperate attempt to put on makeup on a moving bus. It’s not easy.

On the bright side, Michael had had the foresight to do most of his own makeup before they hit the terrible roads. Now the bus keeps jerking, and every so often they’ll hear Ashton cry out “Ow! Fuck!” after the bus jolts one way or the other. His own fault for trying to do makeup in his bunk. Michael is pretty sure he’s trying to, like, save his look so he can stun Luke, but more power to him.

Luke will drool over him no matter what anyway, so it’s a pretty futile effort, but whatever.

Anyway, Michael’s more invested in what Calum is up to. Calum, sweet, beautiful Calum, who has been staring at his own reflection in his phone screen for about ten minutes, trying again and again to put on his eyeliner. They learned early on in the process of experimenting with makeup that you should do your eyeliner last, but thankfully Calum hadn’t heeded that warning, because whatever other makeup he might have put on would have been wiped away with Calum’s first failed attempt at eyeliner.

In the beginning it’s kind of hilarious, watching Calum struggle. Michael loves him — honest — but the sounds of increasing frustration as he keeps fucking up are hysterical. It doesn’t help that he looks kind of silly every time his hand jerks from a sudden bus movement that draws a long black line next to his eye. But now it’s going on ten, maybe twelve minutes, and at least Luke’s made progress with his glitter. Calum is still sitting there on the couch, looking more determined and fed up than ever, eyeliner pencil poised next to his face.

Michael takes pity. He’s not a monster.

“Hey,” he says, sitting next to Calum.

“Not now,” Calum says.

“Don’t be rude,” Michael says. “Let me help you.”

“Absolutely not.” Calum briefly lifts his eyes from his phone screen to glare at Michael. “You’ll just draw a dick on my face.”

“Well, that can’t look worse than what you’ve got going on.”

Calum turns the glare up.

“I’m joking,” Michael says. “Look, you’ve already got raccoon eyes from all your failed attempts. Let me just do it for you. I’ve been doing eyeliner for, like, six years. I’m a pro.”

Calum gives him a skeptical look. “Your eyeliner in 2014 was awful.”

“Yeah, but I’ve improved,” Michael wheedles. “Please. I’m begging you. It’s agony watching you fail this much.”

“You love watching me fail,” Calum grumbles, but he drops his phone into his lap and caps the eyeliner pen, and Michael knows he’s gaining ground.

“Yeah, but I also love proving that I’m so much better at something than you are.” Michael holds out a hand. “Gimme.”

Calum looks cross, but he hands over the eyeliner pen. Victorious, Michael sets it aside and says, “Let me take off all this leftover smudgy stuff first,” and pulls a makeup wipe from the open pack between Calum’s knees. Calum sighs, as if Michael’s not doing him an immense favor, and looks up at the roof of the tour bus so Michael can get at the black smudges under his eyes.

“Cute,” Michael says when he’s finished. Calum blinks a bunch and then looks at the makeup wipe, streaked in black. “Can I blow on your face?”

“Keep it PG!” Luke chides over his shoulder. Michael flips him off.

“Don’t blow on my face,” Calum says.

“The makeup wipe stuff needs to dry before I can put your eyeliner on.”

“So let it air dry.”

“That’ll take too long.”

“Patience is a virtue, Mikey.”

“You would know,” Michael says sagely. “You did try for almost fifteen minutes to put on this eyeliner, after all.”

If looks could kill, Michael would be a goner.

"I'm breaking up with you and suing for emotional damages," Calum says.

"You don't mean that," Michael says, leaning in to sweep a fluttering kiss on the tip of Calum's nose.

"Try me," Calum mutters.

Michael decides to let him be bitter for the moment, because priorities. "At least dry your face off."

Calum pulls his t-shirt over his face and wipes aggressively at it. "Good?"

Michael grins. "Aw, baby's learning to follow orders."

"Shut the fuck up."

"You love me," Michael says, and then, "Don't speak, you'll mess me up." Calum rolls his eyes. "And don't move or I'll stab your eye."

Calum huffs. Michael waits for him to still before leaning in with the eyeliner pencil. It's true he'd been pretty bad at eyeliner back in 2014, but Michael hadn't been lying when he'd said he's improved. That's mostly thanks to Lou teaching him the proper way to put it on, during the Where We Are Tour, but Michael has also practiced enough times to feel confident as he puts the pencil to Calum's face. It's also easier because it's not liquid eyeliner; that's a whole different boss battle.

Calum stays dutifully quiet as Michael works, breathing hot against Michael's wrist but saying nothing. Michael can't help but feel like this is weirdly intimate, which is strange since they've literally fucked, but somehow this feels deeper. The fact that Calum trusts him with a semi-sharp object near his face is pretty profound. Luke would never.

Finally, Michael pulls back, admiring his own handiwork. "Damn," he says. "You look hot."

Calum's lips pull into a smile, although he's obviously trying not to. "Thanks," he says. "I'll take it from here."

"You do kinda look hot," Luke puts in. Apparently he's finally finished his glitter and is now standing next to the couch.

"Don't call Calum hot, I wanna see!" Ashton calls out.

"Then come out here, asshole!"

"You come here!"

"Nope, sorry," Calum replies, grinning. "Just have to wait and see."

“I’m done anyway,” Ashton grumbles, and a moment later there’s a clattering noise. Ashton clumsily slips out of the bunk and straightens up, stretching his arms above his head. Michael’s pretty sure he hears something crack.

Luke whistles lowly. “Shit.”

Finally Ashton’s gaze lands on Luke, and he smiles bashfully. “You look good.”

“You look amazing for someone who did all of his makeup in an unlit bunk on a moving tour bus,” Luke returns, tripping over himself to pull Ashton into a kiss. Michael rolls his eyes. At least Ashton’s efforts have been rewarded.

Michael, on the other hand.

He brings his eyes back to Calum’s, still kind of floored by how good he looks with eyeliner, with the way it makes his eyes even more intense. “Are you gonna kiss me?”

“Not if you’re a little bitch about it,” Calum says, but he’s already leaning in, one hand warm against the back of Michael’s neck.

“Hey,” comes Ashton’s voice a moment later. “Let me see Calum.”

Michael breaks away irritably. “Can you not? We’re trying to make out here.”

“Hey, you do look hot,” Ashton tells Calum, ignoring Michael. Michael hits his leg.

“Go away, asshole,” he says. “Leave us alone.”

Ashton grins. “Don’t worry, Mike, you look hot too.”

“I know that,” Michael says, although he takes the compliment to heart anyway, because he likes when people think he looks good, and he values Ashton’s opinion more than most.

(His own boyfriend excepted, obviously.)

“I need to finish doing my eyes anyway,” Calum says, giving Michael a quick kiss on the cheek. “Or you can do it, if you’re so inclined.”

“I am,” Michael decides. He smiles and reaches for the glittery eyeshadow pot balanced on Calum’s thigh. “You’re so pretty, you know.”

Calum blushes, deep red. “Stop it.”

“You’re absolutely gorgeous,” Michael says quietly, “with or without makeup. I’m the luckiest guy on the planet.”

Calum exhales, smiling as Michael reaches for his face. His eyes flutter shut and Michael sweeps the shiny eyeshadow over his eyelids. “Love you,” is all he says, and Michael smiles, too, because that’s really what he’d been getting at.

What is your physical and digital workspace like when you’re working on your story?

LOL it really depends on what stage I'm in of the process - My storyboarding space is at home, as comfortable as I can be, a beer and some food at the ready and pure silence. The cats have to be freshly fed, otherwise I'll be harassed and lose my headspace entirely LOL. I usually work on my story boards digitally, just at a very small scale, with my script/outline on my computer and working on my ipad! The double screen helps a LOT, although i would just print out the script if I had access to a printer, haha. When I'm working on the actual page itself, it's a very different story. I usually just try and work on it in tiny little batches during the day when I'm stuck at home, and usually work around the animals as best i can, lmao. Truthfully, I really prefer to be in a coffee shop when I'm working on finishing pages, it makes me so much more productive than i am in this house with so many things to take care of right in front of me, but, obviously, that's a bit difficult to do these days. ;; I usually reserve food and drink until after I pass a milestone in inking/sketching to help motivate me to keep going for as much as I can before taking a break, and I need some kind of music or video playing in the background to keep myself from being absolutely bored out of my mind. My shading process, since it's in black and white, is very easy and i can finish it in one setting, easy, no matter what I'm working with. I also work digitally for my pages, of course, although I don't need more than my ipad and clip studio for it!

I work almost entirely in the corner of my IKEA couch at home I used to work at a proper desk with a Cintiq, but when I switched to Procreate on an iPad, I migrated to the couch and surrounded myself with a nest of clothes and blankets and books and... here I am, bein' cozy. With terrible posture But when I was between jobs last year, I did rent a little coworking space down the street so I could get out of my pajamas and go get comic stuff done there. It was a godsend. I like drawing at my favorite coffee shop every so often too, but I tend to hide my work while I draw, and there, everyone can look over my shoulder The coworking space had a tall artist desk that was rarely used, so I often grabbed that one. Not cheap, but to stave off cabin fever, heck yes, worth it.

My old workspace was in the basement of my home in canada and it was always perpetually freezing even in the summer and i was frequently visited by spiders so my current workspace is a huge improvement in that regard. I do miss my old ergonomic desk chair though. I'm definitely not the kind of person who can draw in bed or on the couch. I need to be in workmode and having a designated space just for that is necessary for me to get in the right headspace for that.

my workspace rn is just my desk with my laptop and my drawing tablet. my laptop is stacked on top of a pile of books so i can see the screen (otherwise my tablet blocks my line of sight). it's kinda simple

Depends. I have a Cintiq Mobile Studio, so I can draw pretty much every where and sometimes in the oddest position, but most of the time I am on my desk with the cintiq hooked up to a second monitor so I don't have to look down so much.(edited)

For Wayfinders: Thumbnails are somewhere cozy and the only physical work. Me and Q sit and plan them out together. The rest of wayfinders are made on Photoshop, and flat colors in clip paint studio. In the world I would love a nice studio place in an office with others. During corentine I have been working from home, and I am not that good at it, being quite the extrovert. Before corentine I was in a artist residency where I worked on Wayfinders which had a workstation and all the programs we could need. It is so nice and me and Q are going to return there when it opens up again!

my current space is uh.... a bit better than my last one. I used to work on an old writers desk for a decade and I did most of my comic work sitting there cramped up with my desktop taking most of the space. Now I have an L shaped desk where I have my desktop on the shorter end. The longer end it's my pen, pencils, and watercolor stuff. my display tablet occupy the space at times so switching from digital and traditional without worrying about setup hassle is a lot better than what I dealt with before lol.

I'm glad the days I had to curl up and draw with no privacy are long gone now

I’ve got a little drafting table where I draw all my comic pages. I’m messy with my pens so they’re kind of strewn about until I start to lose them. Then I put them back. I’m not particularly neat. I spend most of the comic process off the computer, so most of my digital work is just on an iPad where I can sit anywhere. I try to keep good lighting around my drafting table and there’s always loose eraser shavings all over.

I have one long desk at almost three meters. On the left side is all my coffee and tea supplies, in the middle is my work space and on the right is my dining table xD I get everything done from there, despite having a mobilestudio so I COULD sit anywhere and work, lol. It's a blessing during holiday seasons to be able to bring it everywhere, but at some I like my designated working space. My workspace is a big, broken corner desk I managed to lug out of an old apartment when it was gonna be trashed. Before then, I'd just draw in bed. I don't remember, but I'm pretty sure the folding chair I sit at is a similar affair. It's got a Dollar General throw pillow on it so I can at least say I'm trying to save my back. The top of the desk is a mess of mostly old bottles and cans, pencils, incense ash, and my old tarot deck. I love this setup dearly. This is the first time I've ever had my own desk space, much less a space I can decorate or leave as messy as I want. Got my own art up on the walls with sticky tack and all! Also the cat's scratching post is directly behind me, because we've learned the cat won't use it unless it's as in the way as possible. What can ya do, lol.

I got spoiled with an adjustable desk. It is six feet long, and has a whiteboard top for noodling with dry erase markers

my main computer is set up on an adjustable stand so it floats over the desk, and then I have my cintiq, which we tried to mount on a similar stand but then it was just too heavy

I keep my dice collection nearby because fidgeting helps think things through sometimes

and rolling to make odd decisions never hurts

lately during the quarantine I've been sharing the office with my spouse so we've had to establish rules over when it's okay to bug each other(edited)

I suppose I'll talk about my setup too :) My main setup is where I do digital art. I share an office with my SO, so we both have workspaces on opposite walls from each other. I work on a corner desk that holds my beefy computer, two monitors, and a Huion Kamvas GT-191. That's where I draw my comic and pretty much everything else done digitally. Ngl, it's a mess right now. I have comic notes and location floor plans in sketchbooks and DnD character sheets spread out all over the surface, and random pens and sticky notes. In the corner of the room, we have a nice large-format printer where I produce prints for conventions. I actually sketch my pages on an iPad pro in Procreate, so during the sketch phase, sometimes I'll just bundle up on my couch and do it, or before quarantine, sometimes I'd sketch on the go. My other workspace (which hasn't gotten much love as of late tbh) is a drafting table in the corner of our living room. I keep a tabletop easel on it and my Copic markers, as well as whatever I'm working on at the moment. (RN it's some ink washes.) The drawers hold all my ink, pencils, erasers, etc. Next to the drafting table is where I keep all my large charcoal, graphite, and oil pastel drawings (mostly school projects), and my large paintings. Other than that, I have a nifty little cart where I keep painting supplies :) I will say, this setup is by far an enormous improvement from my previous setups.

it rly is a steep learning curve when it comes to digital art, ive gotten comfortable w my art program over years of use but like, trying to use most other interfaces totally mystifies me, so i def understand that it can be intimidating!! just like with any other skill, tho, persistence is key above all, so dont be discouraged and keep at it, first and foremost!!

idk if i really have any useful tips, but ill try to think of some things that could hopefully be helpful!!

im self taught and more of a hobbyist than anything, so when it comes to like..... more technical stuff, idk all that much. but!! one good thing is that digital art is much more common and better understood than it was when i was getting started, so theres a lot of info out there for anything you might wanna know, and a variety of methods that other artists have tried and tested.

google is ur best friend if anything seems to be going wrong!

one thing it took me some time to learn is not to stress too much about making complete, finished, polished pieces every time. youre learning!! focus on getting used to drawing while looking up at a screen and the different steps youll need to take, build the skills that will enable you to make more refined pieces further on. the fluidity of your penstrokes will improve w time, dont fixate on getting it perfectly right on every piece

get the hang of how your tablets proportions translate to the workspace on your monitor, get comfortable with the pen pressure and how it affects your line weight, and try to learn the shortcuts on your keyboard for the main tools and actions that you need (ctrl+z is ur best friend after google tbh)

get your workspace organized the way that you like it. the way that it looks when you start it up tends to have a lot of extraneous tools and windows to showcase the functionality of the app that can seem intimidating, but you dont have to use every single one. your tablet should also have options for you to adjust things like the pressure sensitivity in the pen. get ur settings how you like them!

one small habit to keep in mind is to zoom out every once in a while as you work, especially when youre just learning to do digital lineart!! keep an eye on how the whole thing fits together. you dont want to overwork one part of the canvas, only to zoom out and see that it doesnt work in the grand scheme of things, or is unrealistic for you to do with the rest of the piece

a lot of ppl have the misconception that digital art is like ‘cheating’ at art, but thats totally not true!! the things that youve learned about art irl apply to your digital work, and this extends to any exercises you might do, or exercises that you might not have needed irl but will help you to learn how your skills translate to a digital environment

DONT FORGET TO SAVE!!!!! WHENEVER U THINK ABOUT IT AND WHENEVER U GET UP FROM THE COMPUTER!!! HIT THAT CTRL+S!!!!!

other than that, idk....!!

once you get the basics down, dont be afraid to mess with the different settings. layers, opacity, filters, new brush sets, and all sorts of things like that can help you make your art, but they arent The Difference between a good digital artist and a bad one, so dont feel like you are wasting time without them. tbh some of the best digital painters ive ever seen literally just use the default brush and eraser and nothing else afowejoaj but they are definitely worth exploring

nothing rly comes to the top of my mind, but i hope any of that was helpful!! this is more about like, settings and tablets and stuff, but i actually wrote a bit more about this a few months ago, with more detail abt coloring and a little bit about brushes there, as well!!

hmmm… well to usually set the mood would depend on the type of story I’m writing, if its horror/really angsty shit then I’m definitely going for dark themed music, if its something fluffy n cute- then im gonna go for some really happy upbeat music, so to set the mood- it’d usually depend on the genre

Ooooh fuck this is a tough one, Im too lazy to link it but- in my Yan!Henrik story there were some parts I ABSOLUTELY loved and felt were p damn good and in the werewolf story I wrote as well, some good parts in there too, but I definitely feel more fond over some of the scenes in the Yan!Hen story than any other one

Honestly, I’m pretty open to genres, like- fantasy, science-fiction, etc- the whole shabang- im not too picky bout any of them-

hmmm I guess like- wouldnt it technically be in third person with the way I write, for the reader its always You and or they, I always keep a story gender-neutral so that way all readers can be who they want to be in the stories, it can give them a better chance to imagine themselves in said position, now if i got a specific thing to do, male, female, non-binary, etc- then yeah I’d do that

backstory: how did you come to love writing?

That’s a- actually kinda simple tbh- its not an interesting story- At first I was actually unsure about it, but then- the more I wrote, the more I got super into it- It was just… super fun to me after I did it for awhile

It’s a hobby for now, but I do wish I could open commissions- but hmm its been like, maybe 5-6 years by now, maybe even a bit longer

critic: what’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received about writing?

Oh god I’ve received TONS of good advice from people, especially when it comes to some of the German I use for Henrik, I will admit… I’ve been severely slacking with learning my German, and I…. I deeply regret it tbh, but- I never mind and am actually grateful when someone corrects me when using a word incorrectly in a sentence or whatever

Maybe the time is coming...

In which I talk about the future of this blog under the cut--

Lemme start off saying that I really, really love this blog. It’s not a waste of time or any such thing to me.

Lemme also say that this is not definite, and even if it is, it still applies to months in the future.

Reasons I might end Nightly-Noivern

If you look back at my art from the beginning, there’s been a massive improvement. However, lately my skills have kinda... plateaued. This is mostly because I don’t have the time to make art that pushes my skills while remaining daily-- stuff like backgrounds, interesting angles, lots of characters, or using harder materials (markers, pens, paint, etc), or simply the act of drawing other things I’m bad at (like humans). In order to get the time to draw high quality art regularly, I’d have to end nightly-noivern (or make it not daily).

I feel very... unmotivated. I get a lot of asks from the ask memes and stuff I send out, but a lot of those... aren’t appealing to me, at random times. And I don’t know why, and then I just end up feeling guilty about it. You’ll notice that a lot of my posts the last few months have been askless.

I’ve stopped getting a lot of interactions. That’s fine, feel no pressure, but interactions were a big reason this blog exists. I think the community in general has stopped sending interactions because there’s simply so many blogs, haha.

I have other more story and higher quality art based projects I wanna work on that nightly-noivern saps my time/energy from. Stuff like fanfiction, ask blogs, and general art pieces.

A lot of my higher quality art gets kinda... ignored. Again, this isn’t a pressure on you guys, but it is a bit demotivating to see stuff I don’t spend a lot of time on (ie the picture redraws) get 2x more notes than stuff I do spend a bit of time on (like the fusions).

Ways Nightly-Noivern may continue differently

I might have some sort of weekly “quality art” post, where I draw something very well, with different materials, backgrounds, lots of characters, etc. I might also try varying up small things-- like angles-- and improve on stuff I have issues with (like drawing the characters on-model).

M!As might be a big help-- I wanna learn to draw humans? Bam, they’re human for a month. Unfortunately, that’d make 2+ months where they’re not normal, including the normal halloween M!A I wanna do, and a poffin M!A I still need to do (but that will only last ~10 asks). Y’all would have to be okay with that, and it’s alright if you’re not.

I’ll probably start asking for more interactions. Just, dumb stuff. Fighting, hugging, playing... etc

I might make it not-daily, if push comes to shove and my time is constrained.

Lastly, and this being the worst case scenario if nothing really works, I might end this blog. I’d keep it around-- I’m too much of a sentimental beast to delete this sort of thing. Even if that happened, though, I’d still draw the characters on my main-- @sylph-feather-- and maybe they’d even cameo in other stories I have to tell. Either way, this ending would likely not be for months, unless something drastic happens.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this, or other ways to keep this blog going!

Quick story time

So.. this post doesn’t really have all that much to do with Seán, but then again, it does and I have to start somewhere. Anyway, back in - what was it, February? - I found Seán’s youtube channel through a Sanders Sides video, actually. I checked it out, found Say Goodbye and became instantly infatuated. I also had the strong urge to draw for the first time in a long time. Now, thing is: I wasn’t very good at it, which is why I quit a few times in the past. I especially sucked at drawing men but I just really wanted to draw Seán and Anti. At first, I was scared but eventually the creative energy got too much and I had to let it all out. I was especially scared of colouring it - I sucked at that too - but I decided to be courageous and to just do it. And I actually.. kinda liked the result. Here you have those two lovely drawings:

(Let’s not talk about those, shall we) (Also, sorry for the terrible quality of the pictures, my phone camera sucks)

Well anyway, the result of me liking them was that I wanted to draw more and more. I was super giddy that I not only managed to shade it “properly” for once, but also that i drew a guy and he didn’t look, um, weird.

So I did it. I drew every day - sometimes the results were horrible and I had to put my sketchbook down for a bit. But I still managed to draw something every day. I forced myself to draw things I was uncomfortable with drawing - I coloured nearly all of my sketches and I tried to draw lots of guys so I would become familiar with their anatomy.

And guess what: I did see the progress. I didn’t think I was very talented at art - I was pretty average, not too bad, not too good. But with lots of practice and all that creative energy I had from discovering a new passion of mine (cough youtube cough), I did make progress. And seeing that I did encouraged me further.

I started drawing a comic, which taught me to draw the same character again and again. I got new pens with the intention of colouring said comic - didn’t work out, but I was still crazy about learning to use them. I started to follow more artists on tumblr - not only because I wanted to see the youtube-fanart, but also because I learned so much by just looking at their art. I took part in turqoisemagpie’s art project for Seán. And I kept it up. I was also not content with a lot of things, which led me to want to improve even faster.

You wanna know the reason why I’m rambling about all this? Well, look at my most recent drawings of Seán and Anti and compare them.

In about 4 months, my drawings changed. A lot. And I’m not super talented or something. I just... kept it up. Because it made me happy. Because I wanted to do it.

I guess the point of this super long post (that probably nobody will read but hey, why not post it, Liss) is that I just wanna say: Do what makes you happy. Don’t let anyone stop you from doing what you want. If you wanna draw, do it. It might not look the way you want it to look in the beginning, but that’s normal. That’s human. Don’t stop because you feel you’re not good enough - you are. I.. had to learn that myself.

And finally, to come back to Seán - all of that kinda does have to do something with him, because.. well, he was the one who motivated me to draw. He was the one whose creativity was almost infectious. He was also the one who told me to never give up. He doesn’t know any of those things, but.. thank you. You helped me discover something I love.

How do you properly channel your energy? That's a personal problem I have and I think a problem others have as well.

I’m answering this under the assumption that by “channelling” you mean “draw up energy to work with, to be put into objects or sent out into the world itself.” If that is not what you were looking for, please feel free to send another ask and clarify what you need help with.

There’s a lot I wanted to say in this post, and I don’t know that I said it all, but please bear with me, it’s long. If you don’t wanna read it all, and just want some techniques, there are a couple at the bottom, but I couldn’t find too many, so if still needed I can try to share what I do too. But this is important enough to me, at least, that I felt I should say it.

I can’t say there is a “proper” way. Like, there are common techniques that work for a lot of people, but that doesn’t mean they work for all. And this doesn’t just apply to channelling, or any one particular branch or method of magic - this is all encompassing for witchcraft in general. I can only say what I know from my own experience, but that doesn’t guarantee it to be something that everyone else clicks with or can always do.

A lot of these things really take practice, and the skill doesn’t always come immediately. I feel I got lucky, it only took a few weeks before I started feeling energy, for example, but I have heard some people say it took them longer, if they ever did. I feel that is important to keep in mind as well - the progress isn’t always instant, or immediately recognizable as progress, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t happening, and that what you’re doing isn’t necessarily failing or incorrect, it does take some time.

(On a crazy off to the side note, it’s also hard for me to tell you any way to do this right now, because I don’t know what you’ve already tried, and I may say “do this” when you already know it doesn’t work for you, but I didn’t know it didn’t work for you. Which is why I’m giving a very generalized answer.)

But, for example. Channelling my energy has a lot to do with sensing it, actually feeling the energy flow to know I am doing it. A lot of people can’t physically feel metaphysical energy when they use or work with it. And that is cool - you don’t need to actually feel it to work with it. But then my method won’t be of any use to them, because my method heavily revolves around that aspect.

(It isn’t the right way, or the only way, and I acknowledge that - it’s just my way, and I know it won’t work for everyone, but as long as it works for me, that’s what I need for my craft, because it isn’t about anyone else. It’s by me, about me, for me. And it’s great if other people can use my stuff and it works for them, that’s why I share it, just in case it can; but I also know it won’t click with everyone, which is okay, it just means they need to find something else, which I can try to help with too.)

Or, another example, visualization - a lot of channelling methods say that is very important to do. Not everyone can do that either, though. Just because they can’t visualize, doesn’t mean they can’t channel energy. But that particular way to do it won’t cut it for them.

I have a lot I want to say on this, but my brain is scrambled. I’m sorry. I hope I do this justice, say it right, don’t come off as blunt or rude, because it isn’t my intention. I just wanna make something clear as I can.

In the end, there is no “proper” - at least, no universal “proper” - that applies to everyone and everything in witchcraft. If it works for you, it’s proper for you; what is proper for you in magic, may not be for other people, and that is okay. What works for you may also work for a lot of other people, but it is okay if you are one of the few it doesn’t work for - it doewsn’t mean you can’;t do magic or witchcraft at all, it just means you need to do something different for the same results.

Like, think about how many people draw. And how many different styles you see of drawing. And how, looking at every person’s drawing technique, there may be similar aspects in some, but everyone still does it kinda differently, but they’re all still drawing in the end - in the end it’s all still art, no matter how they got there. There’s even so many names for it, that may also depend on what you’re drawing or how you do it - sketching, doodling, drawing, penning; caricatures, cartoons, realism, abstract. So many different ways to get there, so many different titles and styles and whatever, but it’s all still art in the end. That is how I see witchcraft and magic.

And, like art, I believe it comes down to personal experimentation with various techniques to find what works for you. Each artist experiments with tutorials and stuff, or just wings it, to see what works for them, to get a style they like - same thing with witchcraft.

Here are some tips that I have when trying to find out your way of doing things, that may be useful for other things too, but right now I’m just focused on witchcraft. Just tips, no strict rules or “have to”s, just things I think may help you. If you like it, try it; if you don’t give a fuck, don’t. Just thoughts, opinions, ideas.

◆ Find out where your problem is in that area. This is why recording what you do and how things play out with your spellwork can be so important - you can look back to try to pinpoint exactly what it is that didn’t work out, so you can either fix it or move past it. So: what aspects of channelling techniques have not worked for you in the past? Visualization? Feeling the energy?

◇ Sometimes, focusing on those areas, and trying to improve them, can be enough. Like, people say “I can’t do this in magic,” and okay, that is fine. But how many times did you try it before you determined it wasn’t working for you? If a thing fails just once, I can’t say that is a guarantee that that particular technique doesn’t work for you, period - spell failure happens for a lot of different reasons, and doesn’t always have to do with lack of ability. I believe it is best to be sure that those things really don’t work for you at all before writing them off. So, if you find you’re having a hard time feeling energy, keep trying for a while, look up other ways you can do that, keep practicing those techniques, until you can really rule out it just isn’t working at all.

◆ Sometimes there may be more than one area that is causing a problem, or the first area you chose may not be what is actually causing the difficulty. I believe every possibility should be ruled out to figure out what isn’t working and why, as well, before determining something isn’t going to work for you at all. Again, this is when those spell notes come in handy: you have documentation of everything you did, so you can go through piece by piece to figure out what it was - or what it was in conjunction with something else - that didn’t play out as planned.

◇ If things still keep not working, do some more research and see if there is some other way you can do it. Look for alternative methods for the same technique, give those a shot - try to keep in mind remembering what you did so you can figure out what doesn’t work about it for you if that’s what ends up happening. So, if this one particular method focused around feeling energy doesn’t work, and you’re sure it’s the feeling energy part, try a method that focuses on visualization instead, and see if it shows any results.

(Rinse and repeat.)

◆ If you can’t find another way that works for you that already exists, even after all that, if you’ve tried all the methods that you can find already talked about, or from external sources… try to find one within yourself. By this, I mean try creating a unique way, different from what you’ve seen before - or maybe even just tweaked from methods you’ve already tried, keeping things that worked and discarding what didn’t. Honestly, if that is what needs to happen for you to be able to do it, there’s nothing wrong with going off on your own, away from the beaten path, and playing around with what you find there to get something magical to work for you. Just because it’s new, and just made by you right then and there, doesn’t make it “improper” or “invalid” or “less legitimate” than common or well-known methods - if it works for you, that’s really what matters.

(And I know it can be hard to know where to start when creating something brand new, but knowing a lot of theory may help direct you where to go. If you know how the other things worked and why, you can figure out what else might work and how and why based off those. Idk, I’m kinda burning out, let me wrap this up real quick.)

◇ I have found that “starting over” in a various area or technique can help me see things I didn’t before, open new paths or ways of thinking on the subject that can make practicing it completely different than how I did the first time. Try taking a look at energy work in general, not just channelling techniques, and see if anything comes out at you. Look at “beginner” posts, see if anything has changed in your way of working things from those original points, or see if any new opinions or techniques present themselves. There are a lot of blogs making content on Witchblr, and they all have a unique sort of view, that can prove handy in this sort of thing.

Trial and error, and experimentation, are really the keys here, in my opinion.

I really don’t want to say “you HAVE to do all these” or “this is how you HAVE to do it to figure it it,” but these are my suggestions and tips. And again, Idek if these things will necessarily work for you either, but I feel this will be more beneficial than just telling you how I do things. And I can still do that, if you don’t think this answer is helpful. But this is how I would look at your situation, if I were stuck on figuring out a way to do a certain technique - this is how I’d go about trying to find something that works for me. I feel like telling you how to find your own answer may prove more beneficial than giving you one of mine that still might not suit you in the end anyway.

Hey there anon! Thank you for asking! ♥ That is a subjetc I really like talking about cause it’s something that, honestly, is not very easy and can be very different for different people. Getting your art noticed at first can seem like an impossible mission, especially if, like me, you’re still climbing your way towards “essential” improvement, and by essential I mean the fundamentals of art, like anatomy, composition and other theorical stuff. As an artist that is still in the middle of this process, I feel so honored to know someone wants my advice to get through steps I’ve gone through, that means I’m progressing well, so thank you for that ♥ But anyhow, I’ll try to sum up what I feel like are very very VERY important tips for young artists, based on what I’ve learned/self taught myself throughout the years. c:1) Don’t do it to get noticed; do it for fun. Of course, feels so good to get a fantastic feedback from followers and other dear mutuals, it’s just amazing! But it’s a human being fact: when we turn fun into work, it becomes boring and stressful. When I started the blog, I pushed myself to post every single day. I thought that if I was very active, I’d be noticed more quickly. At first it was okay, I learned a lot of stuff really quickly trying and trying repeatedly. But it soon started feeling like another source of pressure in my life. So I went back to how I did before, drawing for fun, doing it cause I love it, cause it’s my passion, working to improve, and it all got so much better. Being noticed should not be your main fuel, love should. And all the rest comes as a consequence of how much love you put in what you do. Not only in art, but everything in life.2) Practice. Practice a lot. Never stop.Right after having fun, improving myself as much as I can is the second main thing I focus. There’s a quote that I like that goes: “May you be pleased with your work, but never satisfied”. Keep on practicing, constantly. I recommend keeping a sketchbook with you, and trying to make yourself draw some sketches on it every single day. But keep in mind: It doesn’t have to be perfect! It shouldn’t be! Make gesture drawings, scribbles, doodles, sketches. Draw from life or from your mind. If you like drawing faces, draw many different faces, experiment shapes and styles. Challenge yourself to draw something you’re not good at. No need to push yourself to make it perfect on your first tries, keeping on trying is the key for any young and specially self-taught artist. If your art achieves what the viewers looks for in quality, it’ll be noticed sooner or later.3) When it comes to getting your art more noticed, focusing on fanarts might make it easier.Okay that might sound weird, but it’s true. Starting out and gaining some popularity as an OC artist is DAAAAAMN HARD. At first, my blog was gonna be OC focused. I kinda gave up cause 1) I noticed I didn’t really wanna draw OCs anymore for a while :’) and 2) As we know, fanarts are much more likely to get noticed than original characters arts. Luckly for me, I love the AoT fandom so much and it was quite easy for me to feel like an active part in it when I started trying. It’s a really nice fandom overall in my opinion, which accepts all kinds of art pretty well, so it’s a good starting point for you. Of course, if your original art is good and innovating it’ll gain popularity with certain ease as well, but it’s not that common for young and begginer artists like us to expect that from ourselves right off the bat so I guess that’s worth saying.4) Find mutuals/fellow artists/your inspirations!Before creating my blog, I’d never been in touch with other artists that produced the same kind of content I do; I did it all just for the sake of doing without really showing anyone and without any critique, just keeping it all for me. Tumblr really changed it for me. I made fantastic friends here, some of which are EXCELLENT artists that I look up to so so so much. Being in touch with other artists, along with making it much more fun to be a creator of content, helps you learn much more about what you need to improve by constantly noticing how they draw certain thing, what kind of style they use and having someone close to you that likes the same stuff you do and might like your art as well!I could go for hours talking about stuff I think are very important on improving your art and bringing people to notice it more, but I think it’d get too long and something like a “lesson” and I don’t think art is something that can be taught to someone in that way. You can teach the fundamentals I mentioned before, but art is something that should come from each individual in my opinion, and growing with it is a different experience for each different person. :3About digital art, I’m still a begginer in that and my traditional art is much better than my digital art in many aspects (except coloring, cause I don’t practice coloring with pencils much and don’t have watercolors yet ;-; ), but from what I’ve learned these past few months, the three most important things are: 1) Get to know the program you use, whatever it is. As a begginer, I’d definetly recommend using Paint Tool SAI. It has some great tools, just enough to start out and make some good art, and it’s not too hard to use. By getting to know your program and it’s settings and tools, you’ll eventually know by heart just which tool to use everytime and how to make things look more natural and flow better. Also, I believe moving to Photoshop or whatever other program that has more tools after getting used to SAI is much easier than picking it up straight away. There’s also the pen tablet of course which is essential in my opinion (I ain’t got time, patience and skill to draw with a damn mouse :^) ). There are some good ones that are not very expensive and do their job pretty well! 2) Don’t get stressed out if your art is not as clean and well done as it usually is on paper. For me personally, learning how to draw digitally has been almost like learning how to draw all over again. It’s not as easy to transfer the ideas from my mind to the computer screen as it is on my sketchbook. I have a messy drawing style by nature, so things like linework and coloring digitally were very tough for me at first, and it took some practice to get to the point I am, in which I still need A LOT of practice and improvement. But my point is, try and try and try again until you get to a point in which it looks cleaner and it flows better, like it does on paper. Play around with different brushes and textures, perhaps you’ll find one that matches your style better.3) PRACTICE! That sounds cliche, but it’s true. It’s the only way to improve. There’s not much to say about it overall, but what I like to do to practice is take some random reference photos and “trace” over them, not like, literal tracing, but turning the body into blocks so I can understand better how joints work, for example, and how they look when bent like this or like that, so when I draw it by myself I’ll remember that and it’ll look much better. There are also many sites in which you can challenge yourself to draw based on certain reference photos in a strict time that you can choose, I’ll link you two of them: x y So, these are some of my tips for you as a young artist to improve your art and therefore get it noticed sooner or later, I hope this was helpful in some way!
