modern torture to me is the nosferatu lovers being obsessed with orlok while disliking thomas and thinking ellen's feelings for orlok were pure love not influenced by any negative impact he might've had on her life (which, if you ask these same people, there was no negative impact to be had)

#i'm not saying don't like orlok - i don't think that really matters #but i feel it's very disingenuous to the story we were given to act like orlok only represents ellen's forbidden urges and desires #and her being with orlok is what frees her while being with thomas is what brings her down #getting some real self-insert vibes here lol because that is not how ellen feels! she loves thomas!#but i do think ellen's relationship to orlok and her ending with him is powerful and transformative #it just so happens that powerful and transformative can come from anywhere and anything - even things that hurt you!#in general i think it freaks me out that this movie had very obvious and frequent depictions of SA #that are ignored because it's 'gothic' thus not SA? apparently?#kind of can't wait for nosferatu hype to die down so i don't have to keep seeing these same readings over and over again
