when jaehyun was told you would be a guest MC with him at mcountdown, he was elated. the boy was basically bouncing out of his seat and thanking the lord for hanbin and sohee having schedules.

you two had only stopped to say quick and polite greetings to one another at the hybe building elevator, but that was the extent of your interactions. jaehyun was really curious about you. partly because you debuted around the same time as boynextdoor, but mainly because he found you extremely talented (and beautiful) and wanted to get to know you better.

you had just reached your greenroom when jaehyun came bouncing up to you like a puppy to start talking to you.

"hi y/n, how are you today? it's nice to see you again and work with you today!"

jaehyun was barely hiding his excitement, making you laugh softly at how enthusiastic he was.

"it's nice to see you jaehyun, and i'm doing well. i'm excited to be able to work with you today!"

you shot him a bright smile and were quickly ushered away by your manager and makeup artist before you could even ask how jaehyun was doing in return. not that jaehyun minded. he was just glad he got to talk to you.

you and your makeup artist were basically like sisters. it was no secret to her that you found jaehyun cute and funny, leading to tons of teasing the moment you found out you'd be doing daechinso live and mcountdown hosting with him.

"don't make your cute little crush obvious on live, but just be yourself. you'll do great. this is a good experience for you"

she said earnestly, giving you a gentle side hug while you nodded and went to the couch with jaehyun and the other staff for daechinso live.

you and jaehyun exchanged glances and smiles before turning your attention to the staff who told you what to do.

"it's all simple stuff. we just talk casually together with the guest. you'll do great"

jaehyun shot you a sweet smile back in response to your nervous one, patting your shoulder lightly to calm your nerves.

"i don't know why i'm so nervous. i watch daechinso live all the time"

you admitted as you took deep breaths to calm down. for being an idol, you were still very nervous on camera and with other people. jaehyun perked up at the mention of you watching live often.

"you do? why haven't you ever guest starred on it?"

you turned to him in surprise. unit names were mainly for idols who were already super close. the two of you being in the same company didn't necessarily mean you guys were close, so you were confused. seeing your surprise, jaehyun backtracked and rushed to explain what he meant.

"the unit name for me, hanbin, and sohee is shine meongddocat. since we're hosting, we need a unit name for us"

he explained hastily and started second guessing his, what he thought was risky, question in his attempt to get closer to you. you let out a small "ohh" of realization and smiled. you glanced at the array of costumes on the table you and jaehyun would have to wear during the live.

"if we wear these we can be tanghulu"

you joked as you held out a strawberry hat to him. jaehyun laughed and put it on while you put on a matching strawberry hat.

tons of different idols walked by and you tried to hide the fact that you were so amazed at seeing all of them. unbeknownst to you, jaehyun smiled at the way your eyes lit up when seeing idols you both looked up to since you were kids. it seemed unreal to jaehyun at first too. you two had only been dreaming to get to where they were, and now you were finally here.

"who are we having with us today?”

you whispered to jaehyun while the staff got ready to start the live.

"i don't know. it's a surprise to us too"

jaehyun laughed and shrugged, sitting close to you in case you guys had to squeeze a lot of people on the couch.

suddenly, bang chan, han, felix, and seungmin of stray kids walked in and introduced themselves. upon seeing them, you and jaehyun bowed over and over together in unison until they laughed and told you two it was okay. it was even more embarrassing when you guys remembered you two were dressed as strawberries bowing profusely.

the live started and showed the five of you standing up around the little coffee table and the couch, introducing yourselves.

before sitting down, jaehyun subtly nudged you to sit on the end of the couch rather than be squished between everyone. a soft smile spread to the corners of your lips, grateful for how considerate jaehyun was.

the six of you went back and forth, exchanging comments and jokes about your careers, experiences, and just overall having fun. jaehyun noticed you fiddling with the flip sequin pillow, unconsciously swiping back and forth between his face and the normal design. he thought it was endearing how you were so nervous playing with the pillow.

“so, i heard you’re a main rapper and a main vocalist, is that right?”

chan asked you two and you both nodded in fear, knowing where this was going. felix let out small laughs when he saw your guys’ faces.

“i think we should do freestyle rapping between you two. i’ve seen you rap before. i’m confident you can rap better than our jisung”

chan said mischievously as he gestured between han and jaehyun. you froze and looked at jaehyun as he looked at han in pure adoration and fear, shaking his head in refusal to chan’s comment. this was NOT part of the script but jaehyun was so awestruck he didn’t care.

“okay staff-nim drop the beat”

jaehyun summoned his swagginess and put on a pair of sunglasses. he looked ridiculously adorable as a strawberry with sunglasses on but he still ate regardless.

“i think he lost”

seungmin laughed, gesturing to his own member who looked betrayed while the rest of his members agreed. again, jaehyun adamantly refused to accept his supposed win and bowed repeatedly to han.

“and for miss main vocal, pick a song and seungmin will duet with you. i get a lot of comments on instagram live saying they want to see you two specifically duet”

felix added and you thought for a moment.

“should we sing jungkook’s standing next to you?

you glanced back and forth between seungmin and jaehyun, who had a wide smile on his face at the mention of his role model’s song. seungmin nodded and the staff started the music, jaehyun adding adlibs every now and then.

you and seungmin duetted, singing all the high notes together to showcase your guys’ vocals. you watched the others on the couch whistle and smile at how well you both did harmonizing together. jaehyun did the dance for standing next to you while you guys sang.

“that was great, as expected from two amazing vocalists”

jaehyun praised and clapped as did the other members who especially praised your vocals on such a hard song.

you continued to talk to the members about their fanbase, knowing how much most idols loved their fans to death. you yourself would know because you’d be nothing without fans.

When yn got to practice, the boys were running warm ups. Gunwook yelled over for her to join them, and she walked up after placing her things down. The team huddled around her, asking how she’d been, Ricky nudging for Gyuvin to step forward a bit. 

Gyuvin joined in their talk, standing a little closer to YN, smiling down at her as she spoke. The team asked YN about her student council stuff. The team picked up on her and gyuvin’s shared glances, their little smirks at each other, and how they subconsciously stayed closer to one another. 

Through their small talk, yn and Gyuvin could tell hanbin wasn’t in a good mood. He looked from one to the other, noticing how the two of them exchanged glances from time to time. Jiwoong called for them to get back to work, and YN went back to the bleachers to get started on her homework. She’d look up fron time to time to watch their drills, waiting for one of their breaks so she could talk to gyuvin. 

About an hour in, with a few breaks between to get some water, she heard Jiwoong call their official break. The team had fifteen minutes to go off and do whatever they needed to do. YN expected Gyuvin to come and talk with her, but after a few minutes there was no sign of him. She got up and went to talk to gunwook, asking about whatever came to mind. 

Soon, she felt a tug on her arm, and turned to see Gyuvin, who looked a little frantic, pulling for her to follow him. She obliged and let him tug her away, doing her best to keep up with his fast pace. When they got out of the gym, she saw Gyuvin scan the area before his eyes landed on something. Someone. He tugged on her again and sped up, telling her to follow. Hanbin was on their trail. 

YN didn’t know why he was following them, all she knew was that she was being dragged along by gyuvin. She picked up her pace to keep up, his hand warm around her wrist as he led her away. 

They’d look behind them a few times, seeing hanbin still following them, a little faster since he realized YN was with gyuvin. Gyuvin looked slightly frantic, yn looked puzzled. 

Gyuvin snagged her around a few corners, eventually ending up behind the bleachers, both of them panting from the run. 

“Wanna explain that?” YN asked, pushing her hair away from her face. 

“Yeah, sorry,” he sighed. “Uh, Hanbin was trying to interrogate me about hanging out with you. Trying to get me to talk, i guess,” He smiled, amused by their little chase. “What did you want to talk about?”

YN smiled. “Hanbin,” She sighed a bit and Gyuvin stood up a little straighter. “He texted me last night saying he didn’t like that we were hanging out. He said you wouldn’t be good for me,” she pursed her lips and Gyuvin frowned. 

“Why?”

“I have no clue,” YN smiled. “He’s an enigma,” she slumped against the wall behind her, looking up at him. 

“That’s just so weird, why would he think that?” Gyuvin furrowed his eyebrows. “I haven’t done anything wrong, have I?” 

“Not that I can think of,” She shrugged back at him. “Maybe he’s just weird about it because he knows both of us,” 

“Yeah but he’s not rizzing either of us up, why should he care?” He asked. 

“I asked him the same thing yesterday,” yn sighed. “It’s frustrating, you know? Just being judged for who I like,” 

“Yeah,” he nodded. “But I can prove him wrong. I’ll show him that he’s wrong, that I am good for you,” he smiled at YN, through his slight nervousness at the thought. “If he’d just give me the chance, i could show him-”

“You don’t need to prove anything,” YN interjected, putting her hand on his arm. “What Hanbin thinks doesn’t really matter to me. And it shouldn’t matter to you. I like you regardless of Hanbin’s opinions on it,” 

Gyuvin felt himself smile. “Cool,” he sighed a little and relaxed upon his words. “Then, that’s all that matters to me,” 

The two just smiled at each other for a minute, taking each other in as the muffled noise from the gym around them got louder. Unspoken words filled the air between them, as both of them realized how close they were to one another. 

Their silence was broken when Gyuvin spoke her name, his hand moving up to tuck her hair back a bit. “YN, I… I really like you,” he told her, his voice soft as his fingers played with the hair he’d tucked away. “You make me feel… good,” his words fell short as he looked at her. “You make me feel happy- i look forward to being able to see you, I love being around you, I-” he stopped his ramble and sighed. “I just need you to know that,” he smiled a little, his other hand finding hers and squeezing it lightly. 

YN smiled, looking down at the ground. “I like being with you too,” she looked up at him, a little sparkle in her eyes as she looked at him. “The feeling’s mutual,” her smile made his heart warm, his hand absentmindedly staying close to her, still fiddling with her hair. 

The two looked at each other, reaffirming their feelings that had only grown through the weeks. Neither of them wanted to go back to whatever they were before, awkward conversations, friendly jokes, and stares across rooms were not what YN and Gyuvin wanted. 

And Gyuvin knew what he wanted. 

He stood up a little straighter, the hand resting in her hair laying gently on the back of her head. He looked at her, and sighed out whatever hesitancy he could push out of his system. 

“Can I kiss you?” He asked, voice quiet, eyes flickering down to her lips, then back up to her pretty eyes. 

There was silence, the question surrounding them as they stood. And even in the silence, YN nodded her head.

He leaned down slowly, squeezing her hand as she stood on her tiptoes a bit to meet him halfway. YN’s eyes closed as she felt them getting closer, soon feeling his soft lips against her own. She took in a soft gasp, letting herself relax and bringing her hand up to rest on his cheek as they continued. Gyuvin moved his hand from hers, and wrapped his arm around her waist, holding her close, not breaking the kiss- as if he’d wake up from a dream the moment he let her go. 

Outside on the court, The other teammates were hollering for Gyuvin, their break had ended a few minutes prior, and they needed their point guard to continue with their drills. Luckily for Gyuvin, when he got back, there was no suspicion he had just spent a good five minutes kissing Hanbin’s little sister.

Love for Love's Sake | Things You Didn't Notice #9

(okay it's not an episode number this time i just still have many details to point out oops pls let me go)

I swear. I thought I'd stop mentioning small details because I already wrote like 10 posts on Tumblr translating and explaining all the cultural stuff regarding this show and the obsession is already becoming embarrassing, but I rewatched the last episodes again and I've got tiny. Little. Details. That I can't help but point people to once again. Because damn, the amount of thought put into this show!

(trigger warning: first part talks about suicide and depression, next ones are linguistic and cultural)

The Black Suit & The Sea

I would've asked Koreans I know about the significance of such symbolism but they are celebrating Seollal (New Year) today and I don't wanna ruin the festive mood asking about "how would people dress for suicide" x)

But after watching this scene, I recognized some strong parallels in Korean media depicting depression, suicide and one's decision to end their life. One of it is bridges and jumping (if you don't know what Bridge of Life is, ask me and I'll share, so this post wouldn't become too long) but another one is sea.

My interpretation - Koreans wear black suits to funerals, so if someone is headed to the sea in a black suit, it might mean this is the character's attempt to "have" their own funeral before finally ending their life. Why do I think this combination is somehow significant?

Because I remembered a music video one of K-pop artists I like (Kim Hanbin) made, after he experienced the downfall of career, extreme hate and rejection from the public, and severe depression. His whole album Waterfall tells Hanbin's personal story, dark thoughts and his battle to survive during the time when he was gone for 2 years, but in the music video for this album (illa illa) he is seen emerging from the sea in a black suit – metaphorically regaining his music and, most importantly, desire to live. Watch with lyrics!

If we think, this is how you depict suicidal thoughts/attempt in Korean media (of course, Love for Love's Sake was even more blunt in telling us the meaning), then Myungha wearing black suit wasn't just for the pretty or dramatic picture. More than that, we see him wearing the black suit for the whole last evening – especially when he goes to finally meet his mother.

Which tells us Myungha has already decided to disappear from this world, and was determined to do it on that day, and his mother rejecting him and pretending she doesn't know her son might not have been just the last straw... but it definitely could've been Myungha's last attempt to find anything in his life worth staying for, worth not going through with his plan.

Anyway, what a scary but beautiful symbolism.

Let's talk about something happier! More heartwarming!

Do you remember when we talked about the carefully placed movie posters in previous episodes? I payed more attention to the background this time when in Episode 8 Yeowoon ran to the cinema searching for Myungha in his world. And what an amazing discovery! When Myungha starts existing again and calls Yeowoon, the movie poster behind Yeowoon says "Guardian" (보호자).

And I already said in another post that Myungha in previous episodes admitted himself being Yeowoon's "guardian, protector" in the exact same word. But now this word is shown next to Yeowoon! As Yeowoon is the one who changed the main mission and has now declared himself Myungha's guardian and protector and will do his best to make him (his favourite pereson/bias/blorbo) happy. They have now both become guardians for each other. This. Goddamn. Show.

And I also want to shout out the VFX & Production team for this show – all the visual effects are very down to earth, gentle and not over the top but enhancing the series to the max. Like, maybe you wondered where on the screen does it say "Monday, August 14" and "Saturday, August 12"? Well, as expected, you see it on four monitor screens above the box office – the date, the ongoing movies (yep, still our favourite two fake movies) and available dates etc.

But when Yeowoon and Myungha agree to meet each other in the exact system time, they are facing each other without a barrier, and the screens are now counting down the time until the Game End. Instead of normally showing movies, like in the previous shot, it says "Time remaining: 3 hours, 23 minutes, 15 seconds". It was either done with VFX or practically, but still, the thought of incorporating system messages into the actual background is insane and I'm always happy to discover such details.

I don't know how many of you have motivational stairs at your schools, we definitely didn't have this but it's quite a popular thing in Korea. They put popular and uplifting sayings for students on each stair, sometimes they even quote motivational phrases from idols, like this:

And it's interesting that when system gets broken and Myungha is about to disappear, we see the deep cracks coming through the stairs, we see ruined school BUT at the same time the quotes in the show are so obviously in our focus. And they are already written (see screenshots above) in Korean and English, but I'll still write down: one is saying "Stay hungry, stay foolish" and "If you dream it, you can do it, you will succeed". So, perhaps... motivational quotes from sunbae?

And the last moment isn't heavy on translation but I still want to talk about it because cool Korean culture!xD You see the gang grilling meat on the roof (it's called samgyeopsal and it's very popular to have for gatherings), and then Myungha makes a "ssam" and feeds it to Yeowoon – but Sangwon steals it.

Ssam is a wrap, you grill meat then put it on the salad leaf, add other ingredients (like mushrooms, sauces, garlic, green onions etc, there are many side dishes) and then you wrap it in this sort of salad sack and eat it. It's very tasty and unusual combination. But the thing is! There is no way to make it for someone else and leave it on their plate so if you make a ssam wrap for someone and want to give it to a person, you literally have to feed them (like Myungha does with a very fond smile). This is why it's often seen as a romantic gesture (aka feeding someone from your fork etc) and why it's hilarious that Sangwon steals this ssam from Yeowoon (because he wants and he gets Myungha's affection and he's not above being a brat about it!)

I'm sure you can already sense it anyway without me telling you about romantic/close-friend implications, but I thought you guys might wonder why are the guys fighting over the salad leaf.

Another funny thing – Sangwon mentions "There's a saying, 'Don't scold dogs while they eat'". This is a Korean proverb "밥 먹을 때는 개도 안 때린다" ("You don't hit even a dog when it eats") which means that, no matter how annoying you find someone, no matter how angry you are, you can't scold this person while they are eating. Eating is a very important cultural thing in Asia, of course, so do not have arguments at the dinner :D But it's funny how Sangwon uses old proverbs to be mischievous and steal Myungha's love without consequences xD I adore him

I swear, this gotta be my last post about all the details in Love for Love's Sake. There is one more scene with the mirror and a caption, and I'm very curious if it means something because it was seen twice, during system breaking down scene as well, but it's either in Chinese or Japanese and I can't read it.

step two — make him good ol’ baked home goods

you trusted gunwook with your life after all. well, not after the kitchen fiasco that was.

“uhm, is that supposed to be bubbling?” you questioned in concern watching the “cookies” bake in the oven.

“i don’t think so,” he trailed off in fear. “just how many tea spoons of baking powder did you add?”

“i think, around 3?” you replied.

“that can’t be right, then why is the-“ realization flashed through his eyes.

“oh man..” he started.

“what did i do.”

“well, you may have used table spoons instead of tea spoons.” gunwook stated re-reading the baking instructions.

he pointed his finger to the top of the ingredient list. “also, we used baking powder instead of soda.”

to make the situation even worse, the smell of smoke entered your nostrils.

“there is no way…” you raced to the oven and fished the tray of slightly burned cookies.

of course at the worse timing ever, gyuvin enters the kitchen, clearly looking for whatever he can stuff into his mouth.

“yay cookies!” his eyes lit up. “i love home made ones the best!”

“gyuvin wait!” but you and gunwook were a little too late. as gyuvin munched into the baked good that didn’t even deserve to be called a cookie.

gyuvin’s face went from joy to confusion to pure disgust.

“oh wow guys this is the best thing i’ve ever tasted!” he managed to cough out.

“dude, you can be honest.” gunwook deadpanned.

“i need a moment.” he mumbled making his way toward the bathroom.

in the distance you can hear the faucet running as gyuvin attempted to get any taste of that concoction out of his taste buds.

“great! i gave him food positioning!” you slouched onto the floor in defeat.

step two. failed.

and so the saga continued. gunwook would come up to you every day with a new plan to push gyuvin closer to you. of course, most. well. all of the attempts resulted in failure.

gyuvin gasps loudly, as if offended by the words. y/n just chuckles at his display, turning around to stare at his tall boyfriend, who pouts. "i'm just saying, your going to college you don't need all this stuff!"

"yeah, i'm going to college" y/n states like a matter of a fact. "i need everything".

"everything?"

"everything".

gyuvin blinks, narrowing his eyes and giving his partner a judging stare. y/n lightly punches his shoulder, and gyuvin sighs. "okay! okay! you can pack everything".

y/n was originally gonna pack on his own, he didn't really even want help, but gyuvin insisted on helping, and wouldn't take no for an answer. since y/n had procrastinated for super long and now college starts in two weeks and he hasn't even packed half his stuff yet.

he has maybe one box packed, and he was only reminded of it today when hanbin screamed in his ears with a megaphone telling him that he starts college in two weeks.

so now, here y/n is, trying his best to decide what to pack as gyuvin just looks at his stuff, seeing what he could find. "you have so many books! where do you even keep these?"

"in my shelves, obviously".

"your room is the size of a cubicle, what shelves?"

y/n scoffs, still looking away from gyuvin as he sorts his clothes in one box and then his pillows, blankets, and bedsheets in another. his attention quickly moves away from gyuvin, whose actually not helping him pack.

gyuvin had been in y/n's room maybe twice in the whole time they've been dating. to be fair, they're always out, doing couple things like buying ice cream at three am, or shopping for sweaters just so y/n could steal them from him, or running across the beach at night.

they're usually never inside, just always out and about.

gyuvin scrunches his nose, staring specifically hard at a random drawer besides y/n's bed. he blinks, looking over at his partner, whose busy trying to figure out how much stuff he can fit in one box, completely turned away from gyuvin.

he opens the drawer, trying to see what's inside. pens, pencils, notebooks, binders, some more books, and a few post it notes. just boring stuff, gyuvin thinks in his head.

he sighs, packing those things in the box beside him, he notices that there are still other things in that drawer, letters, and he tilts his head, trying to get a better look at them.

wait.. are those the letters i wrote for him?

earlier in the year, gyuvin had written letters for y/n, it was a thing he did when they were in the much earlier stages of their relationship, he really did pout his heart and soul into those letters, but he assumed y/n had forgotten about them.

but he kept them, like the corny loser he is.

gyuvin smiles as he thinks about it, laughing to himself. y/n was pretty much oblivious to what gyuvin had stumbled upon, busy trying to figure out how he's gonna put all his extension cords together without tangling them.

gyuvin's mind drifts off to the situation, college, and it puts a sour taste in his mouth. y/n is on the other side of this small room packing, and he's oblivious to what gyuvin is thinking.

yeah they're going to the same college, but y/n is going to get busier, and they can't just be a silly teenage couple anymore, they can't just go out buying ice cream at three in the morning, or gyuvin giving y/n piggyback rides randomly.

he moves the letters over, and sees other things, keychains, small fans, a tape measure(?), shoe laces, a polaroid camera, and a photo album. gyuvin tilts his head, reaching into the drawer to grab the photo album.

he struggles to take it out without making a lot of noise, he's not trying to alert y/n and distract him. he places it on the floor, getting the letters out of the drawer and placing them on the table beside the bed.

he then moves back to the photo album, he's not snooping, no! he's just curious, that's all! that's why he's flipping through the photo album right now. as gyuvin does that, he can't control his smile, because it's a bunch of photos which show y/n growing up.

gyuvin assumes that these photos were taken by his parents, y/n's father was a photographer after all. gyuvin couldn't contain his giggles, because y/n's childhood photos are so funny and cute that he can't help it.

y/n, who was busy packing, turns around as he hears gyuvin giggling, and all he can see is his boyfriend struggling to contain his laugh, looking like he was about to fall back onto the floor with how hard he was laughing. "what's so funny?"

gyuvin tries his best to catch his breath, clearing his throat as he stares at y/n, who blinks. gyuvin, still laughing, turns the album over and displays the photo of seven year old y/n wearing his roller skating attire.

y/n narrows his eyes, and then they widen. gyuvin is horrible at keeping his giggles in, and he leans back as he laughs, completely enamored by the cute childhood photo of his boyfriend.

"you weren't even helping me pack" y/n goes over to him, looking at the photo album. "you were just going through my stuff".

"hey!" gyuvin yells, literally on the floor. "i wasn't going through your stuff, i did pack some stuff, i just for distracted easily!" he laughs, propping himself up on his elbows.

y/n reaches forward to try and grab the photo album, but gyuvin quickly moves his arm before he can grab it. he pauses, and gyuvin smiles in a mischievous manner, giggling. "give it back".

y/n reaches so forward again, and falls forward, on top of gyuvin. "you are such an.. ass".

"no, you love me" gyuvin says, picking up his head to stare at y/n, smiling. "your so cute, you know that? the roller skates might've been a little big on you but—"

also ends up getting good at it (because he’s talented and good at learning new things)

doesn’t like to auto battle, actually enjoys grinding battles

started laughing at you because he got gepard for his beginner pulls and you don’t even have him yet (but you laughed when he lost his 50/50 to himeko of all people so you’re even.)

has a decent amount of characters

you give him so many credits because you keep using his gepard

to return the favor, he uses your characters occasionally, mostly seele.

he likes putting shielders and healers as support characters because "some people need to be able to not die"

easily finds the chests, is a completionist

always updated and knows when new redeem codes are out

very intently focused on the game, you find it hilarious

but since our maknae is very dedicated, you’re quite surprised at his trailblaze level..
