Favorite Film Books of 2017 by Kimberly Lindbergs
With the holidays fast approaching I thought I would recommend an eclectic selection of my favorite film books released in 2017 in case you’re looking for gifts to please the cinephiles in your life. My picks include a variety of reading material for all budgets and tastes including many titles that are closely linked to films currently streaming on FilmStruck.
Unchained Melody: The Films of Meiko Kaji by Tom Mes
If you appreciate Japanese cinema you’ve undoubtedly encountered the work of Tom Mes. Mes was one of the founders and editors of the highly influential and much missed Midnight Eye website. He’s also written or co-authored a number of books about Japanese cinema including Agitator: The Cinema of Takashi Miike and Iron Man: The Cinema of Shinya Tsukamoto. His latest offering is the first English language book focusing on the career of the beloved Japanese actress and recording artist, Meiko Kaji. It’s a slim but essential volume jampacked with information about Kaji and the Japanese film industry that made her a star. The book is published by Arrow Video, which has released many of Kaji’s most popular films on DVD and Blu-ray including LADY SNOWBLOOD (’73) and LADY SNOWBLOOD 2 (’74), both of which you can stream on FilmStruck.
Eat What You Watch: A Cookbook for Movie Lovers by Andrew Rea
Foodies, film fans and home chefs will enjoy this collection of recipes based on food seen in movies. The book was compiled by self-taught chef and filmmaker Andrew Rea, creator of the popular YouTube cooking series Binging with Babish, and it includes creative photos that accompany his recipes and celebrate the movies that inspired them. You can cook up some of Charlie Chaplin's dancing dinner rolls from THE GOLD RUSH (’25) or make mouthwatering tonkotsu ramen inspired by TAMPOPO (’85) while streaming the movies on FilmStruck. The book is published by Dovetail Press and available from Amazon and Barnes & Noble.
Lost Girls: The Phantasmagorical Cinema of Jean Rollin edited by Samm Deighan
This richly illustrated collection contains an assortment of insightful essays focusing on the work of French horror and fantasy filmmaker Jean Rollin. The contributors are all female film journalists, critics and scholars who offer a unique and at times, distinctly feminine, view of Rollin’s filmography. If you’re already a fan you’ll appreciate the thoughtful consideration given to his output by contributors such as Kat Ellinger, Heather Drain and Alison Natasi and if you’re unfamiliar with the director, the book is a wonderful introduction to Rollin’s multilayered body of work. Lost Girls: The Phantasmagorical Cinema of Jean Rollin is published by Spectacular Optical and is available to purchase on their website.
Cats on Film by Anne Bilson
Author and film journalist Anne Bilson’s latest book is a smart, shrewd and at times laugh-out-loud study of cats in film and the various roles they’ve played throughout cinema history. The book covers an impressive 100 movies in all including a number of titles now streaming on FilmStruck such as THE THIRD MAN (’39), THE LEOPARD (’63), THE SOFT SKIN (’69) and HOUSE (’77). If you love cats and enjoying seeing our feline friends on screen, you’ll appreciate Bilson’s keen-eyed observations. Cats on Film is available on Amazon and you can find updates at catsonfilm.net
Eisenstein on Paper: Graphic Works by the Master of Film by Naum Kleiman
Many FilmStruck subscribers are undoubtedly familiar with the films of pioneering Soviet director Sergei Eisenstein (BATTLESHIP POTEMKIN (’25), ALEXANDER NEVSKY (’38), IVAN THE TERRIBLE PART I & II [‘44-45]) but some may be unaware that he was also a skilled and prolific artist. Eisenstein sketched regularly, and this dense, gorgeous coffee table book collects more than 500 of his illustrations and graphic works including storyboard ideas for his films. Kleiman wrote the informative text that contextualizes Eisenstein’s artistic endeavors and director Martin Scorsese provides the book’s foreword. Eisenstein on Paper: Graphic Works by the Master of Film is published by Thames & Hudson and is available at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.
Italian Gothic Horror Films, 1970-1979 by Roberto Curti
Film historian and writer Roberto Curti delves into the macabre, surreal and sexy world of 1970s Italian horror cinema in this welcome follow-up to his previous book, Italian Gothic Horror Films, 1957-1969. Both volumes are required reading for serious-minded genre fans who should admire Curti’s passion, broad research and attention to detail. Born in Parma, Italy and currently based in Cortona, the author’s background makes him the perfect guide to help readers navigate the dark corridors and spiraling staircases found in the work of filmmakers such as Antonio Margheriti, Pupi Avati and Mario Bava who is currently the focus of a director’s spotlight on FilmStruck where you can stream several of his films. The book is published by McFarland and can currently be purchased on their website or at Amazon.
Slapstick Divas: The Women of Silent Comedy by Steve Massa
If you think women aren’t particularly funny and have contributed little to the history of cinematic comedy, film historian Steve Massa is here to prove you wrong. His latest book provides a refreshing and timely consideration of the female comedians and funny ladies who appeared in silent films. These talented ladies have often been overshadowed by their male costars but in this densely illustrated collection of biographical sketches the author spotlights an impressive 450 women who worked tirelessly in front of and behind the camera during the silent era. FilmStruck subscribers should recognize a few of the names that appear in Massa’s book including Edna Purviance who starred alongside Charlie Chaplin in many of his most beloved films and Bebe Daniels who worked regularly with Harold Lloyd. Slapstick Divas: The Women of Silent Comedy is published by BearManor Media and is available on their website and at Amazon.
Agnès Varda Between Film Photography and Art by Rebecca J. DeRoo
An intimate scholarly look at the life and work of French feminist director and artist Agnès Varda, who is often referred to as the “mother” of the French New Wave. Dr. DeRoo teaches courses on visual arts and history at the Rochester Institute of Technology and she was given unparalleled access to Varda as well as her archives while compiling her study. Her new book offers readers a fresh perspective and new appreciation for one of France’s most admired filmmakers. It’s also a great companion while you’re enjoying the large selection of Varda films available on FilmStruck. The book is published by University of California Press and is available on their website and at Amazon.

howdy, one for ill be your favorite drugs? no pressure,
Fandom is spn and gender preference is male, I am a gal adhd and a handful of scars cause I don't sit still and clumsy- friends say Im charming in a way? I can argue with 10 people at once and win. I also am like.. a hobbyist? I pick up on many things I can do and adapt easily to that- people say im intimidating at first but truth be told Im just shy. The funny contrast to that is Im a people pleaser- Rebellious and a rule breaker in a fun typa way yet very caring. Other than that my demeanor will depend on the atmosphere and people in a room. I do have a hard time paying attention and remembering some things and accepting gifts of any kind- I attempt to give all my attention and love to my s/o though, Im on board with anything they want. Had my heart broken once before and hopefully wont happen again
love ya writing dont stop 😊❤
I ship you with Gabriel!
The two are totally a couple that does the weirdest shit together - like you mention offhandedly that you'd like to try rock climbing or something like that and suddenly you're in a parallel reality of his and hanging off of a wall (with pillows underneath in case you fall obviously). He definitely encourages any hobby you pick up because he's even worse at sitting still.
I feel like it took you two a while to warm up to each other, mainly on Gabriel's part. Because he didn't want to care anymore, y'know? But then you came along and you got flustered so easily when he threw flowers in your face to mess with Dean (just go with it, in my head you're like one of Dean's ducklings (Jack/Claire like? You know what I mean) and messed up that whole plan. Okay, maybe a little bit because he wanted to see how much Gabriel can make you blush in one day too.
You two are the couple that is dedicated to each other to the point that no one even dares to get close to you. Gabriel will absolutely fuck up any person or creature that dared to leave a scratch on you
That was a bit all over the place and horribly late, I hope you still like it

hello!! congrats at reaching 400+ followers!! I saw for your event you were doing a ship thing, and I was hoping I could get one?
Fandom: Supernatural
Preference: Male :)
I really like reading for the most part, and if I get really into a book I absolutely refuse to out it down!! When I get excited I have a habit of showing it with my body, like when a song I really like plays ill kinda do a small spasm thing or when im talking i mive my hands around a lot. I like talking about things I enjoy but I also LOVE listening to other people talk about something they like as well.
I like spending quality time with people, whether it just be us doing out own separate things or us doing something together. I just really enjoy being around someone I care about, but i also like to have my own time, ya know?
Sometimes when things get overwhelming, I kinda just close in on myselfi guess?? I'll become quieter and talk less and sometimes I'll try to get away from people if I can. it happens a lot when people like yell at me.
I'm sorry if this is too much ejejrj take your time and thank you!! :D
Thank you babe!
I ship you with Castiel!
Honestly, I think he'll be in love with you before he even realises what being in love means. You're just so captivating to him and if that isn't the most pure form of love for his Father's Creations that he feels when he listens to you ramble, then he doesn't know. But soon the in-love feelings follow as well and from that point there is no going back for Cas.
He's very big on quality time too, leaves you your room whenever you need it and comes closer at every opportunity you give. Sometimes a bit overbearing, but he never means to. Cas LOVES to share every new thing he learns about with you. You two basically just ramble at each other whenever you feel like it. Three hours of straight up jumping from one topic to the next
Cas vows to never raise his voice at you when he notices what kind of effect a yelling Dean has. That day the Righteous Man and his angel certainly Were Not Friends.
So yeah, you two are the couple that one maybe doesn't notice as such because you don't throw it in people's faces but your love is as deep as it can get. Pure and full of adoration and respect for each other

Ill be your favorite drug, Ill get you high:
i kinda got carried away, im so sorry if its way too long sweets, you can ignore parts of it! pls ignore all the mini vent parts, i dont mean to stain this lovely blog
fandom: supernatural
gender preference: Male !
Right so I am a 5'7 female with redish but brunette hair which is short and fluffy af. I actually am quite chubby.
I am extremely affectionate and touch starved but suck it up so im not annoying (family problems am i right). Will probably cry when feelings are reciprocated while apologizing profusely 👍. wont admit that i look for approval, mostly my siblings. I REALLY love comedy and anything that makes me laugh cause it makes me forget about the world and the shitty things in it for a while. Im talking about all th humor! dry, witty, sarcastic, self-deprication, etc! I do it all everyday. I dont care how stupid the joke was, im laughing at it
Actually quite emotionally drained. Really empathetic but not easily sympathetic but I would try to help and take care of a s/o everyday if I had to. (Im studying psychology! I wanna become a therapist). says absolutely hate love and valentines and etc.. but a big lovesick puppy if im being honest.
Im also very chaotic and giggly evil when I start feeling adrenaline rushing through me. 10 out of 10 wouldnt recommend rated by my brother. 👍
I love music. You'll see me run away with headphones most of the time because it escapes time. As you could tell, I also really love art too! in any form. literature, painting, digital, you get the point. Food, just.. yes, food. Cliche af but big sweet tooth of the family! (weak mfs-)
When the dam breaks, will smother s/o with sheer passion and love. gifts, affection, the words and all that cliche crap. Im not a big fan of jewelry and expensive gifts but Im more into dumb gifts. like.. DUMB gifts. they just make me laugh about how dumb it is, i am telling you, a block of wood would cheer me up! maybe cause i learned to love the small things in life.
~💥
is it bad that I'm halfway in love with you now?
I ship you with Sam Winchester!!
Listen, that man knows what it's like to live with someone who feels so big and has to smother it down so he immediately recognises that in you. And he doesn't judge, he gives you your space and is respectful. But then you start sharing your art with him, maybe initially on accident and Sam is a goner
Like you start opening up about it and he can actually listen to you and let you talk? That's his heaven. Sam is a person who loves knowledge no matter where it comes from and he loves seeing people be passionate.
He will absolutely roll his eyes at your sense of humour and secretly love it. Oh! The first time he feels real panic with you is when he tells you how he feels about you and you get emotional. Sam will absolutely think that he fucked up in some way but keep it buried to calm you
But when you two get together, you're inseparable. As in Dean has to leave the room every time you're sitting together
Sam will shower you in little gifts once he learns how much you love them. A little memory of the newest hunt or a trip in physical form for you to share stories about

I ship you with Eddie Munson!
Trust me, that man will actually melt the second you hand him a baby bouquet - maybe because he knows what it's like to not have much, maybe just because it's you. He would absolutely have had a crush on you prior to you sharing your little things with him simply because he thinks you're cute.
And that you get distracted easily? Eddie absolutely loves that about you! Like when you guys are talking and you trail off and then share something completely out of context? Eddie's hanging off of your lips and takes the topic change in stride. Like I said, he absolutely loves it
That guy is whipped for you, he plays guitar for you in the dead of the night, he lets you teach him all kinds of artistic things
You'd be perfect for each other

• I thought of angels choking on their halos ~ send me three characters and we'll play fuck marry kill (in honour of @jexnrey being back)
FMK JONATHAN, JESPER (SOC) AND NANCY
ANI STOP DOING THIS TO ME MY HEART CAN'T TAKE IT
okay okay, I know I'm predictable but I'll be marrying Jonathan again because I simply could not live with the other two for the rest of my life I think. Then I'd fuck Jesper and hope that this whirlwind won't kill me in the process
And Nancy I will curl up and watch movies with and let her be smarter than me😌
Okay yes maybe she might be the dead option but also not because not Nancy
Are you happy now ani?

FMK SHREK, DONKEY OR FIONA
Okay this one's easier
Obviously marry Fiona, fuck Shrek because he's at least vaguely human (I swear to god if I hear anything about this, I'm attaching people) and kill donkey because I am no pervert
This good ani?😌

FMK STEVE, EDDIE AND JONATHAN
ANI ARE YOU KIDDING ME
Can't I just marry all of them? My poor boys need some love :((
But if I HAD to choose: marry Jonathan (he's my favourite and his family is the best) fuck Steve (dude totally knows how to give me the night of my life but I'm only doing it if he know that there are no strings attached because I don't want him to have to deal with more abandonment issues
Okay please don't kill me but I have to go with killing Eddie sorry. I mean he's dead anyways

Hi I'm doing the thing where you tell a little abt yourself and get shipped with a character (I'd like stranger things and I dont really have a gender preference) I really like making bracelets/necklaces for my s/o's and giving them little gifts, I also LOVE horror movies and horror in general and I'm super physically affectionate (I understand if u cant get around to this but have a good day!!)
I ship you with Robin Buckley!
She'll be so excited when you give her her first bracelet! Like jumping up and down and smothering you with a hug and kisses (and probably asks to make one for you as well so you guys can match)
Will totally watch horror movies with you and get scared halfway through but pretend she isn't "because being scared is for little Steves". Also she'll hold onto you for dear life.
I'm a firm believer of the fact that Robin is touch starved to no end and having a physically affectionate fictional other would probably be her heaven. From your first day on, neither of you can point to a day where you weren't touching at least in some way - it's hands on the other's back or shoulders bumping or knees nudging or fingers in the other's hair... So much physical affection!
