Bollywood Movies Part CLXXXVI: The Mollywood Takeover Part XXVIII
After his father dies in an accident, Avinash (Dulquer Salmaan) recieves the wrong corpse. With his friend Shaukat’s (Irrfan Khan) help, he travels to Kochi to meet Tahira (Amala Akkineni) so that they can exchange her mother’s corpse for his father’s. On the way, they pick up Tahira’s daughter Tanya (Mithila Palkar) so that she can attend her grandmother’s memorial.
TW: domestic abuse mentioned. Karwaan is a lighthearted and funny road trip that also deals with grieving and reconciliation. It hits the funny when it needs to, while also being serious at the right points. Irrfan Khan, Dulquer Salmaan, and Mithila Palkar are all wonderful in their roles and their interactions really make the movie work. Favorite songs are Kadam, Chota Sa Fasana, Heartquake, and Saansein. None of the songs have subtitles.
When auto-rickshaw driver Raghavan (Anu Mohan) goes missing, C.I. Alexander (Sreenivisan) decides to visit Harsha (Dulquer Salmaan), whose wife Maya (Shikha Nair) was murdered by Raghavan. As body parts without identifying features turn up, Alexander becomes convinced of Harsha’s involvement, but is unable to prove anything.
Theevram is an okay revenge movie. Part of the movie is extremely blue to represent the present, while the normal colored parts represent the happier past. I did not like this color scheme mostly because the blue just made everything look weird. I did like the performances, but the plot was a bit convoluted. Favorite songs are Innariyathe and Puthiyoru Pakalil. Neither song has subtitles.
Afsal (Dulquer Salmaan) is in love with Shahana (Nazriya Nazim), one of the customers at cell phone store, but he is unable to work up the courage to talk to her. When he gains access to phone tapping software, he and his friend Binoy (Jacob Gregory) use it for pranks, but as the number of phones they tap increases, the more worrying it becomes to the police who work to find the phone tappers.
Salalah Mobiles is very silly and never takes itself seriously even when dealing with a serious topic, like the invasion of privacy. While the romance aspect of the film of cute, the film is not well written. For what they were given, the performances are good. Favorite songs are Eeran Kaattin and Rasoolallah. Neither song has subtitles.
#the great venture into Bollywood#becomes the great venture into malayalam cinema#karwaan is dulquer's hindi cinema debut#the most unrealistic part of karwaan was when dulquer salmaan had to pretend he didn't know malayalam#it really drew me out of my suspension of disbelief#with theevram we go back in time with dulquer#favorite of theses is karwaan#i think part of the problem with both theevram and salalah mobiles is that they were their respective directors' first films#with this we end dulquer salmaan for now

The Zoya Factor: Dulquer Salmaan on his Bollywood debut and character details in the upcoming film
One of the most handsome and talented actors of the South film industry, Dulquer Salmaan made his Bollywood debut last year with the comedy drama Karwaan, alongside Irrfan Khan and Mithila Palkar. Now, the actor is gearing up for his second Hindi film titled The Zoya Factor, opposite Sonam Kapoor Ahuja which is slated to hit theatres on 20th September. Based on Anuja Chauhan’s book of the same name, the film will see Dulquer play the role of captain of the Indian cricket team.
In a recent chat, the actor opened up about the response his debut Hindi film received. He said, “The biggest takeaway for many was my Hindi language skills. It was very important for me that they didn’t hear my accent. It’s reassuring because I guess I have the potential to work in all languages. Many were like Why didn’t you do something commercial? More of an entertainer?’ But Karwaan had so much heart when I first heard it. I don’t think I am entitled to any kind of debut launch in any industry. I didn’t do that in Malayalam. Why should I change that trend for Hindi? With The Zoya Factor I am hoping people can see that this guy who played Avinash can be Nikhil too.”
Dulquer went on to share details about his character in The Zoya Factor and stated, “Anuja [Chauhan] has put a bit of all captains in him from Virat Kohli to MS Dhoni. I think we have captured the essence of the book. It’s a nice adaptation and smartly made into a film and Anuja [Chauhan] was a part of it too. Zoya and Nikhil keep locking horns. He’s stubborn about his beliefs and principles which I get because when people tell me why don’t you do a remake of your dad’s films or sequels or major hardcore commercial cinema I find myself having to explain that that’s not what I want to do. I really got where Nikhil is coming from. But he’s portrayed as very cool, brash and suave which is not me at all.”
