Quote
Pre-poll surveys, exit polls, and analyses of election results emerging from Karnataka have all made it apparent that the highest preference for the right-leaning BJP – which, at least symbolically, frowns upon freebies – was shown by the wealthiest and most educated segment. Preference for the left-leaning Congress and JD(S) – which campaigned on the plank of welfare schemes – increase as we proceed to the poorer and less educated segments. Three of the four districts in Karnataka where the BJP managed to win a majority of the Assembly seats are Bengaluru Urban (16/28), Dakshina Kannada (6/8), and Udupi (5/5), districts that constantly top the Human Development Index and per-capita income rankings in the state, statistics that indicate a higher concentration of the rich. Everywhere else, the Congress and the JD-S won a majority of the seats. This dissonance in the voting pattern can be attributed, at least in part, to the increasing inequality between the rich and the rest, in Karnataka and across India.

[ad_1] GG News Bureau Bengaluru, 23rd November. The Congress emerged victorious in all three assembly bypolls in Karnataka, dealing a blow to the BJP and JD(S) while reinforcing its position in the state. The results, declared on Saturday, saw Congress candidates defeating prominent rivals, including close family members of BJP and JD(S) stalwarts. In Shiggaon, Yasir Pathan defeated Bharath Bommai, son of former Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai. Pathan’s win marks a significant upset in Bommai’s stronghold. In Channapatna, BJP turncoat CP Yogeshwara triumphed over JD(S) leader HD Kumaraswamy’s son with a massive margin. Congress’s Annapoorna Tukaram secured victory in Sandur, defeating BJP’s Bangara Hanumantha by 9,649 votes. Shivakumar Hails “People’s Mandate” Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar celebrated the victories, framing them as a rejection of opposition allegations and a sign of support for Congress’s governance. “This is a message from the people for what Basavaraj Bommai’s government failed to deliver. Only two things work: development and guarantees. The people have spoken, and this is just the beginning. We will return to power in 2028,” Shivakumar said. He further credited the success to Congress’s welfare initiatives, such as the Gruhalakshmi and Gruhajyothi schemes, which he said had a direct impact on people’s lives. “We are spending ₹55,000 crore for development and the welfare of the people. This victory is proof that these initiatives resonate with the masses,” he added. A Blow to the BJP and JD(S) Shivakumar didn’t hold back from taking jabs at the BJP and JD(S), asserting that their attempts to target the Congress leadership had backfired. “Kamala (the BJP’s lotus symbol) should stay in the lake, and the JD(S) plough belongs in the field. The people have rejected the baseless allegations made against Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and other Congress leaders,” he quipped. The loss in Shiggaon is particularly significant for the BJP, as Basavaraj Bommai had earlier expressed confidence in retaining the seat, citing his 36,000-vote margin from the last election. Meanwhile, JD(S) leader HD Kumaraswamy had campaigned aggressively in Channapatna to secure a win for his son, but the result was a stark setback for the party. The Karnataka bypoll results come amid the announcement of assembly election results in Maharashtra and Jharkhand, as well as bypolls across 48 assembly seats and two Lok Sabha constituencies in 15 states. Early trends in Karnataka had initially shown a lead for the BJP in Shiggaon, but the Congress gained momentum as counting progressed. With this sweep, the Congress not only cements its grip on Karnataka but also sends a signal to the BJP-led NDA and JD(S) alliance ahead of future electoral battles in the state.   The post Congress Wins All Three Karnataka Bypolls, DK Shivakumar Calls It “A Message From the People appeared first on Global Governance News- Asia's First Bilingual News portal for Global News and Updates. Raipur News
Latest Raipur news on September 03, 2023.
Calling tribals vanvasi is an insult, according to Rahul in poll-bound Chhattisgarh.
Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi slammed the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the BJP on Saturday, stating that referring to tribals as 'vanvasi' is an insult to them.
"The true meaning of tribal is the original inhabitants of this country, those who originally owned and have first rights to the land, water, and forests of the country." "However, the Bharatiya Janata Party has coined a new term for tribals - 'vanvasi,' which implies that tribals should be restricted to the jungles only," Rahul Gandhi said while addressing a meeting of party members in Raipur, the capital of poll-bound Chhattisgarh.
However, this is not the first time Rahul Gandhi has expressed interest in the 'Vanvasi and Adivasi' issue. He has been addressing the issue since the RSS referred to tribal communities as 'Vanvasi' rather than 'Adivasi' in 2022. When Rahul Gandhi's Bharat Jodo Yatra arrived in Madhya Pradesh in November, he chastised the BJP and RSS for using the name 'Vanvasi' for tribals and demanded an apology from them. During last year's state elections in Karnataka and Gujarat, he also emphasized the subject.
Speaking at a government event in Chhattisgarh on Saturday, where assembly elections are set to take place later this year with Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Telangana, Rahul Gandhi said it was the Congress government that implemented PESA.
"The BJP wants tribals to stay in the jungles, but we say you should have the right to 'jal-jungle-zameen' (water-forest-land) as well as the freedom to pursue your dreams." This is the basic difference between the BJP and the Congress, according to Rahul Gandhi.
"Before every election, BJP leaders come out with the number of seats they will win," he said, "but the people of Karnataka have shown that they have the right list only and voted for the Congress." He asserted that the Karnataka results would be replicated in Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh, where assembly elections are scheduled for November this year.
He cited a recent news story on Adani in which he stated that because of Adani's tight relationship with the Prime Minister, he (Adani) has sent thousands of crores of rupees to other countries and obtained greater stock market values. "This money isn't entirely Adani's. It belonged to someone else, but PM Modi refused to launch an investigation. Adani is currently acquiring infrastructure, airports, and possibly even trains. Is everything handed to only one person?" According to Rahul Gandhi.
According to the Congress politician, Chhattisgarh is the heart of India, and young people should commit to making it the country's logistical center by constructing the necessary infrastructure so that things are processed and made here and then shipped to other states and nations.
Rahul Gandhi accused the BJP-led Centre of working for the welfare of the country's 2-3 billionaires on Saturday, saying states run by his party will have a government of the poor, not Adani's. Gandhi told a Rajiv Yuva Mitan Club convention in Nava Raipur, Chhattisgarh, that the country cannot advance with hatred and violence. It will continue to march forward by bringing everyone together in love, he said.

After Karnataka results, BJP faces internal rift in Telangana
A few months ago, the BJP was looking to steam ahead in Telangana and make a splash in the Assembly elections scheduled for later this year. But following the loss in neighbouring Karnataka in last month’s state elections, the party seems to have lost momentum in Telangana too. At the centre of the party’s troubles is the unhappiness of senior leaders Etela Rajender and Komatireddy Raj Gopal…

‘Will win 150 seats’: Rahul Gandhi's prediction for Congress in MP election
Gandhi addressed the media after the party's 'election preparedness meet' in Delhi, attended by top Congress leaders, including party chief Mallikarjun Kharge.
Tumblr media
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday predicted that the party will win 150 out of 230 seats in the upcoming Madhya Pradesh assembly election later this year. “Karnataka election result will be repeated in Madhya Pradesh,” Gandhi told reporters after the party’s meeting on election preparedness.
“We had a detailed meeting just now, and our internal assessment indicates that after securing 136 seats in Karnataka, we are now projected to win 150 seats in Madhya Pradesh,” Gandhi said, as quoted by news agency ANI.
In a video shared by ANI, when asked about the Congress party’s chief ministerial candidate for Madhya Pradesh, Gandhi chose not to provide a direct answer but emphasised the party’s goal of winning 150 seats.
Kamal Nath who served as the state chief minister during Congress’ short-lived government in the state between 2018 and 2020, said, “We discussed the strategy and the issues on which the party should contest these polls. We are all of the opinion that we will enter the poll fray unitedly.”
Preparing for upcoming elections in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh
Besides Rahul Gandhi, Kamal Nath, Digvijay Singh, and AICC general secretary KC Venugopal, met party chief Mallikarjun Kharge to discuss the upcoming assembly election in the state.
According to news agency PTI, Rajasthan Congress leaders were also slated to convene in Delhi, including chief minister Ashok Gehlot and his former deputy Sachin Pilot.
Both Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh are set to hold elections by the end of this year. Currently, Rajasthan is under the governance of the Congress party, led by Ashok Gehlot, while Madhya Pradesh is governed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), with Shivraj Singh Chouhan serving as the chief minister.
Congress promises for Madhya Pradesh
Congress, last week released a list of ‘five promises’ to the people of Madhya Pradesh ahead of the assembly election:
1. Gas cylinder at ₹500
2. ₹1500 to every woman per month
3. 100 units of free electricity, 200 units halved
4. Farm loan waiver
5. Implementation of old pension scheme
Rajya Sabha MP Digvijaya Singh had earlier said that Madhya Pradesh Congress president Kamal Nath is poised to be the party’s chief ministerial candidate for the upcoming 2023 assembly election.
The assembly polls are expected to take place at the end of the year. In the 2018 elections, the Congress emerged as the largest party and formed government under Nath’s leadership. But in 2020, Nath was forced to resign after his government was reduced to minority due to resignation of 23 Congress MLAs owing allegiance to Jyotiraditya Scindia. The BJP later formed the government under Shivraj Singh Chouhan.

Rahul Gandhi At Congress Meet As Karnataka Chief Minister Dilemma Deepens
Siddaramaiah vs DK Shivakumar: Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi and KC Venugopal are currently holding talks on the Karnataka chief minister issue.
Tumblr media
New Delhi: Congress leader DK Shivakumar made it clear today that he would not back down in a tense rivalry with Siddaramaiah over the Karnataka chief minister’s post after the party’s big win in the state on Saturday. But he said he would not resort to “backstabbing or blackmail”, regardless of the party’s decision.
Siddaramaiah spent much of yesterday in Delhi, where he met with the Congress leadership amid reports that he was closer to the finish line than his younger colleague. “Let’s wait and see. I don’t know,” he told reporters cautiously, asked when there would be an announcement.
Party president Mallikarjun Kharge and senior leaders Rahul Gandhi and KC Venugopal held talks on the Karnataka chief minister issue. Mr Kharge will later today meet both Mr Shivakumar and Mr Siddaramaiah.
The party’s leadership was yesterday briefed by a team of observers on the views of the newly elected Karnataka MLAs. The Congress held a secret vote on Sunday, the results of which have reportedly been presented to the party president, who will take the final decision.
The party could announce the name of the next Karnataka Chief Minister in the coming 24 hours, sources said. The biggest challenge is to bring Mr Shivakumar on board.
Mr Shivakumar arrived in Delhi this afternoon after canceling his visit last night at the last minute citing a stomach infection. “The party is my god…We have built this party, I am a part of it and I am not alone in this,” he said before flying out of Bengaluru.
“We have built this party (Congress), we have built this house. I am a part of it…A mother will give everything to her child,” he added, indicating that he expected the party to reward him for his role in Congress’s Karnataka victory.
But he repeated that he would not rebel. “If the party wants, they can give me the responsibility… Ours is a united house, our number is 135. I don’t want to divide anyone here. Whether they like me or not, I am a responsible man. I will not backstab and I will not blackmail,” Mr Shivakumar asserted.
In polls held last week, the Congress won a clear majority in Karnataka, finishing with 135 seats in the 224-member assembly. Its celebrations were, however, tempered with anxiety over the Siddaramaiah versus Shivakumar contest for the top job, which drags on for the third day without a solution.
Mr Siddaramaiah, 75, is a former Chief Minister and Mr Shivakumar, 61, is the party’s Karnataka chief. Both claim to have a majority of MLAs backing their claim to the chief minister’s post.
The Congress has a tough decision to make, with an eye on the long-term impact, especially on next year’s national elections.
In an exclusive interview with NDTV last evening, Mr Shivakumar said he expected his leadership to acknowledge who was behind the emphatic win in Karnataka.
“Sonia Gandhi told me, ‘I have confidence in you that you will deliver Karnataka’. I am sitting here, doing my regular responsibility. You should have the basic courtesy, a bit of gratitude. They should have the courtesy to acknowledge who is behind the win,” the 61-year-old said.
“I won’t blackmail, that’s not me. Don’t perceive anything. I have my own presence of mind. I am not a child. I won’t fall in a trap,” Mr Shivakumar added.
Responding to Mr Siddaramaiah’s claim that he has the support of the MLAs, he said, “I wish him all the best.”
In the run-up to the election, the Congress was able to project a united front, even though the supporters of Mr Shivakumar and Mr Siddaramaiah often publicly clashed.
While Mr Siddaramaiah is seen to be a leader with mass appeal and completed a full term in 2013–18, Mr Shivakumar is known for his strong organisational capabilities, and is considered resourceful and Congress’ troubleshooter during tough times.
Sources close to Mr Shivakumar, however, insist that Mr Siddaramaiah has “never been a party man and has never won any elections for the party”.

Congress must be willing to sacrifice in West Bengal, says Trinamool Chief Mamta Banerjee
The Congress Party has registered a great win in Karnataka and it is now the CM of West Bengal, Mamta Banerjee who has expressed her wish to support the Congress Party provided they agree to let go of their aspirations in the state of West Bengal and support Trinamool Congress.
The comment from the Trinamool Chief came as a surprise as to date, she maintained a distance from the national party and always talked about the ‘unity and strength’ of the regional parties in West Bengal to counter the BJP party in the coming 2024 elections.
“Wherever the Congress is strong in their respective 200 seats what we have calculated, let them fight, we will support them. But they have to support other political parties as well. If I support you in Karnataka but you fight against me in Bengal that should not be the policy. If you want to achieve something good, then you have to sacrifice in certain areas,” Banerjee said during a press conference.
She further explained the 1:1 formula and said that the Congress Party must be willing to sacrifice in areas where the regional parties are strong and politically dominant.
“Whoever is strong in some places and regions, they should fight together [not against each other]. Suppose Bengal, so we should fight Bengal, Suppose Delhi so AAP [Aam Aadmi Party] should fight Delhi. In Bihar, Nitish Ji [Kumar] and Tejashwi ji [Yadav] and the Congress also should decide their formula,” she added.
She also said that the Karnataka assembly election results have made it clear that wherever the regional parties are strong, the BJP party cannot make any difference.
