The year was 1555. Portuguese colonial power was at its peak in the 1500’s. They destroyed Zamorins of Calicut. Defeated the Sultan of Bijapur. Took away Daman from the Sultan of Gujarat, Established a colony in Mylapore, Captured Bombay and made Goa as their headquarters. And while they were at it, pretty much unchallenged, they even ruined the ancient Kapaleeswarar Temple to build a Church over it.
Their next target, the super profitable port of Mangalore.
Their only bad luck, just 14 kilometers south of Mangalore was the small settlement of Ullal - ruled then by a feisty 30 year old woman - RANI ABBAKKA CHOWTA
Initially, they took her lightly and sent a few boats and soldiers to capture and bring her back to Goa - Those boats never came back.
Shocked and enraged, they sent a huge fleet of ships this time, under the command of much celebrated Admiral Dom Álvaro da Silveira - The admiral soon returned, badly injured and empty handed.
Thereafter, another Portuguese fleet was sent - only a few injured from the crew managed to make it back.
Then the Portuguese went on to capture the Mangalore port and the fort anyways, perhaps planning to tackle Rani Abbakka Chowta from the convenient distance of the Mangalore fort.
After the successful capture of Mangalore, a huge army under João Peixoto, an experienced Portuguese General was sent to Ullal.
The brief was simple: Subjugate Ullal and capture Abbakka Chowta.
The plan was foolproof- there was no way a 30 year old lady with a few men could withstand the might of an army of thousands with advanced weapons.
The Portuguese reached Ullal and found it deserted. Abbakka was nowhere in sight.
They roamed around, relaxed and thanked their stars - Just when they were about to call it a victory - Mrs Chowta attacked with 200 of her chosen men - there was chaos all around and many portuguese lost their lives even without a fight
General João Peixoto was assassinated, 70 Portuguese were captured and the rest just ran away.
So if you’re Abbakka Chowta, who’s just defeated a large army of aggressors, killed a general, captured fighters and defended her city - What will you do?
- Rest and enjoy the moment right?
- Right?
- No!
Rani Abbakka Chowta, rode with her men towards Mangalore that same night, and laid a siege of the Mangalore fort - She not just broke inside the fort successfully - but assassinated Admiral Mascarenhas the Chief of the Portuguese power there and forced the remaining Portuguese to vacate the fort.
She didn’t just stop at this but went on to even capture the Portuguese settlement at Kundapura, a full 100 kms, north of Mangalore - Just to make a point.
The Portuguese finally managed to get back at Abbakka Chowta by convincing her estranged husband, to betray for money. She was arrested and put in the prison where she revolted again and was killed while trying to escape.
Abbakka Chowta was a Jain who fought against the Portuguese for four decades, with an army comprising of both Hindus and Muslims, a full 300 years before the First War of Indian Independence in 1857.
What did we Indians do to her, as a mark of our respect and gratitude? - We just forgot her.
We didn’t name our girls after her. We didn’t even teach her stories to our kids.
Yes we did release a Postal Stamp in her name, named a boat after her and erected 2 statues - yes just 2 statues in the whole of India for someone who should be our national hero.
The Indian Coast Guard ship ICGS Rani Abbakka the 1st of a series of five inshore patrol vessels built at Hindustan Shipyard Ltd is named after Abbakka Mahadevi.
We might have got to read a chapter about her in our text books, had she been a European or an American.
Many talk about her being the last Indian to have the power of the agni-ban. In all this cacophony, our generation has lost a great hero - a great source of inspiration.
Still wondering why you’ve not heard about her yet?

Exploring Chennai in One Day: A Local's Guide
Chennai with solitary sojourners is by large the majority overendowed development which is highly adaptable to the construction of the village and the mall. While the shopping and temple hopping are lower on the bucket list of many others who visit the city. A Chennai local myself, I have designed a couple of one-day schedules to make sure that the visitors would get a real sense of Chennai with an already antiquarian treasure to bootit is historization, culture, and ecology. People from other nations and Indian states will also find these to be good suggestions!
The Amazing East Coast Road (ECR) Journeys
First off, if you are an early bird and love the day you would not want to miss a sunrise at Elliot's Beach. Also, make sure you to include the Sebastian Schmidt Memorial and the Broken Bridge in your must-visit list. Then, go to the ashram of the elephant (Vinayaka) and the temple of the Marundeeswarar in Thiruvanmiyur. List of the places which include Crocodile Bank and Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary which is perfect for birdwatching. Mahabalipuram, being a UNESCO world heritage site, is an almost necessary-and-essence-to-experience place with its spectacular cut-out rock monuments. After a picnic in Mahabalipuram beach, take your family to Crocodile Bank or Dakshinachitra in the afternoon. How about a half-day at the Dakshinachitra museum of living traditions or even visit the Crocodile Bank? The sun sets behind a rock here which is called a Shore Temple. It stands magnificently and is distinctly visible from afar. Catch
2. British and Dutch Heritage
Start your trip at Royapuram Station which is the Indian subcontinent's Oldest operational station. Explore the Armenian Church, the Madras High Court and the Dravidian style temple- Kapaleeswarar Temple. Turn left on the ECR to stop and look at one of Sadras (Sadurangapattinam) or Alhambra (Alamparai) was the stronghold of the Dutch.
3. Nature Lover’s Day
Depart at first light from here at Pallikkaranai Marsh Lands after the birdies had left their hatcheries. Seek Keerti Food Plaza and Matruchhaya for additional birdwatching and the globally acclaimed Adi Kesava Perumal Temple to secure one of the world's largest and oldest banyan trees. As evening comes, either go to Adyar Estuary or Kelambakkam for birdwatching. Have your last few moments near the quieter Sholinganallur Beach. If you're there from January to March, you can join the "Turtle Walk" in Neelankarai organized to save the Olive Ridley Sea Turtle eggs.
4. Adventure and Activity
Trekking spots such as Tada, Nagari, and Nagala, are among the key trekking spots in Chennai.
5. Alternative Adventure
One of the things to do when visiting Chennai is the Climbing of Pallavaram Hill. It is the best spot to enjoy the planes taking off at the Chennai airport. Diversifying your outdoor experiences could be a good idea if you visit the abandoned stone quarry at Ottiyambakkam to take a swim or go for speed boating and kayaking at Mudaliyarkuppam if you are in Mudaliyarkuppam.
6. Southward Journey
I can't help but feel awe at the prospect of visiting Arignar Anna Zoological Park where the Lion and Deer Safari takes place. New temples to explore in Madambakkam - Dhenupurishwarar Temple and 10th-century inscriptions at Uthiramerur, are both sights to check out on your next journey. One of the options for ending your day in Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary is watching the sunset over the water and birds taking flight.
7. Northward Journey
Go to Madras to get mesmerized by the appealing draws such as the Madras High Court and Armenian Church and then proceed to Pulicat where you can enjoy a relaxing boat ride and also do birdwatching. Pass by the Dutch Cemetery and Annamalai church to witness the total number of flamingos present there. If you are among the lucky ones, you can get a chance to see a rocket taking off from Sriharikota.
8. Marina and Mylapore
If you start your walk on Marina Beach, you will have a great experience and will also make a point to go up to the Marina Lighthouse during the visit. After that, you may head for the Santhome Cathedral, Kapaleeswarar Temple, and Sri Ramakrishna Math. Take advantage of the Margazhi Festival in Mylapore, which is held in December and January and is dedicated to dance, drama, and music.
9. Food and Shopping
Treat yourself to a traditional Tamilian breakfast served at the famous Saravana Bhavan where global vegetarian gastronomy has been a priority since 1981. Walk down the street jewelry/accessories shops where you could buy items that you like and taste young tender coconut water, later. Check out the decorations available at Vijaya Temple and Shanti and also, visit Rangachari or Radha Silks (Rasi) for an amazing hen party pre-wedding celebration shopping spree. Grand Sweets & Snacks and The legendary Adyar Anand Bhavan in T Nagar are two of the top restaurants that offer excellent vegetarian food. You can purchase products from the revolutionary multi-storey building that opened in Pondy Bazaar very recently. Besant Nagar is a great place for meals, with its street food stalls and the popular Murugan Idli Kadai serving the best food in the city that’s almost open throughout the day.
10. Day Trip to Kanchipuram
If Chennai is no longer competitive in the race for sightseeing, plan to visit Kanchipuram. The Mission is a non-profit organization that uplifts the transgender community among other social projects that include agriculture and animal welfare in Bengaluru and Kanchipuram. You might want to visit several temples as the nectar of paradise is hidden there and remain for the most part unaltered. Additionally, you could also be among the tour group who visit cooperatives where you.
11. Day Trip to Pondicherry
If you enjoyed Mother Nature’s beauty to the great extent in the Mabam Church, then why don’t you head along and visit Pondicherry to get a taste of French culture? Explore its resort buildings and beach, as well as cafes and food joints near the beach and Pondy.
Public transportation is provided by buses, trains, Ola, Uber, autos, and share autos. Hiring a car for a day is also a convenient option. If you need a place to stay, you can find hourly hotels in Chennai where you can check-in or check-out any time, including FabHotel Pearl, Hotel Ammu Palace, and Zingle Stay, whose flexibility will not disappoint you.

Bhavatha
It has taken some time to even comprehend/ come to terms with reality. Everyday I would contemplate writing only to again go back to thinking “ Is she really no more? “ and that would end in a spiral and ultimately I would not even start to write. Shell shocked / felt like I was slapped on the face/ paralysed - terms won’t suffice to describe what I feel about her passing.
Bhavatha ,as I know her for over a decade now was a personality who was different from the popular image of her. Anybody would first give her the tag “ Ilayaraja sirs daughter” and naturally so. She would be tagged as “ National Award winner”. Or “ someone who is part of a very illustrious and world famous family” . “ Soft spoken” - yes she is and was all of this . Just that she was more than this.
She loved her father and I think she loved her mother slightly more. But she was quick to break that image of “ daughter of…” and she would prefer to be treated as just Bhavatha. Just another woman on this planet earth. Which was her uniqueness.
Whenever I heard her voice play on the radio I would quickly record and send her a WhatsApp message and say “ love to hear your voice”. Her response almost always would read as “ Hayyo stop embarrassing me” with a smile. She just didn’t want us - who she considered as good friends - to limit her to any of this or to distance her using any of this.
Soft spoken she was. But she was a very strong woman with a very strong intuition and a very clear way of dealing with people and things. She was fair and just. Even if she got temporarily angry or irritated with people or situations, ultimately she would come around and try to smile and recreate the relationship. Am sure people can vouch for this.
Her smile and her laughter- were so contagious it’s impossible to notice Bhavatha without her electric smile.
She and I clicked almost instantaneously the day we met. Providence gave me the fortune of becoming her friend and almost as soon as she saw me she started joking and teasing me as if she knew me for years and that created a natural ease and bonding between us. She was always the welcoming “ Mahalakshmi” into the T Nagar house whether it was during Navaratri or any other occasion or the times she used to invite us for “ Varalakshmi Pooja “ in her married home. We all went there for Bhavatha . Period. Everyone came after.
She would hang out with her various friends groups mostly based on music and work - but with me personally she always spoke about temples. We went to Thiruvannamalai , Madurai Meenakshi, Thiruchendur and locally Vadapazhani together. But her favorite was another temple - which is my favorite too “ Mala when are we going to Kapaleeswarar temple” she would often ask me..
We had our fun moments of pointless banter, aimless laughter, crazy gossips and simply hanging out with no contemplation of the future. Very normal and not five star hangout spots. Her favorite was Woodlands- to the extent the bearers there would ask for her if they spotted me alone. We also had ice-cream joints, beachside laughs and movies at Satyam. Just what normal friends would do in Chennai. All along our minds would be reminding us “ daughter of a legend” but she would always reassure “ Just Bhavatha” just your next door but special friend.
Staying away from Chennai has given me a lot but has also taken a lot away from me. Her passing and me unable to even see her one last time being the biggest loss. I last met her in 2022 Navaratri and after that it has always been over phone. Her last text to me was “ let’s go somewhere to eat” … she would take recommendations from me like the one time we went to the Parthasarathy Swami sabha canteen to have the “ Elai saapadu “ as she would call it. And would thoroughly cherish and enjoy it.
She would often pull me with my craze for Carnatic music and concerts for laughs but she was carnatic trained herself and had a deep appreciation for the art form. As would be evident in her listening and participation of the concerts organised at her fathers place for Navaratri. Her last message to me on Instagram was a clipping of a Sanjay Subrahmanyan concert - I was pleasantly surprised and overjoyed- but did not react much except for a thumbs up- little did I know she would leave the planet a few days after that.
She loved her family- her parents, her brothers, her niece and nephews , her cousins and the extended family. She had very cordial relationships with the musicians she knew and they all consider her their own daughter or sister or friend. She cherished her friends and was there for them in her own ways.
Bhavatha is a true loss on this planet. The earth has lost a very warm and genuine human who brightened life for everyone she was associated with. An irreplaceable loss for her family. An unbelievable and heart wrenching loss for us friends.
I don’t know if I can ever step in to her house and look at a picture of her on the wall rather than her being there to welcome us « I’ll be there by 7 come come » she would have texted just before. And ensure we have dinner with her before we leave. This was our every Navratri ritual. We would freeze everytime when we enter the « legend » zone be it home or the studio where her dad worked but she would be the ice breaker, the « welcomer »the person who united us all!
You’ve taken a little bit of everything from me when you have left Bhavatha. Chennai or your dads music or your voice on the radio , the T Nagar house, Kapaleeswarar Koil, Thiruvannamalai, Ramanashramam… you’ve taken a bit of all this away with you. None of this is going to be the same without you. Ever again.
I know you are in peace already with your mom and probably you left because otherwise you would have to suffer.
But your loss is a rude reminder to me that nothing what I see , I can count on- it can all be taken away in a jiffy. Especially the best things and the best people.
Whatever connected you and me am sure will connect us again somewhere in the spectrum of eternity.
Until then, no am never going to get over your loss!
