Will Do Patti be the game-changer for actresses who turn producers?
While we wish Kriti Sanon the best of luck with her debut film, Do Patti, which will be available on Netflix on October 25, we can only hope that it will be the first of many game changers: a huge success among actress productions!
We say this because, thus far, there has been an alarmingly high rate of flops when women become film producers. Even the few actresses who have turned filmmakers have had a dismal track record at the box office (Simi Garewal's Rukhsat, Hema Malini's Dil Aashna Hai and Tell Me O Kkhuda, as well as the telefilm Mohini and five films directed by Pooja Bhatt from Paap to Jism 2).
There are some exceptions. The exceptions in this list are insignificant, as we will see. Reena Roy's home productions, Muqabla (1979) and Sanam Teri Kasam (1982), were both hero-driven films, whereas Juhi Chawla's co-production, Chalte Chalte, was co-produced with an actor—Shah Rukh Khan—and directed by Aziz Mirza. Yes, Kangana Ranaut's Manikarnika performed similarly. Priyanka Chopra Jonas' regional films, beginning with her smash-hit Marathi début, Ventilator, were profitable, while her Hindi film, The Sky is Pink, was not.
And the Rule! The list of flops is indeed voluminous, extending from Shashikala's Karodpati way back in 1961 (which, according to the late actress, "turned us into kangalpatis or broke!"), Nargis' Raat Aur Din and Sharmila Tagore's Tyaag to the aforementioned films as well as Neetu Singh's Chorni, Raakhee's Pugli, Taaqat (1982) and Zindagani, the Madhuri Dixit home productions, Dil Tera Aashiq (despite Salman Khan!), Yaraana (1996), Mohabbat (1997) and Padmini Kolhapure productions, Dav Pech and Rockford, and (according to rumor) the Zeenat Aman-backed Baat Ban Jaye are also examples.
As is customary, many of these films were "officially" produced by frontmen such as family members, relatives, or secretaries. "But the money obviously came from the star concerned!" says one industry source.
In the millenium, Lara Dutta's Chalo Dilli (albeit a wonderful film), Raveena Tandon Thadani's Stumped!, Manisha Koirala's Paisa Vasool, and Preity Zinta's Ishqk In Paris joined the list of flops. Shilpa Shetty's Dishkiyaoon, Anushka Sharma's highly anticipated NH10, Phillauri, and Pari (after which she chose the safe, OTT route with Bbulbul and Qala), Deepika Padukone's Chhapaak, and Taapsee Pannu's Blurr and Dhak Dhak (all excellent films). As evidenced by some of the examples above, it was not necessarily necessary for the actresses to appear in all of their productions. But that didn't change the situation!
Alia Bhatt made a spectacular debut with Darlings last year, which, like Do Patti, was streamed on Netflix, raising expectations for her next (this time theatrical) co-production, Jigra. However, that film, along with Kareena Kapoor Khan's The Buckingham Murders, collapsed like a house of cards.
The Trade View According to veteran distributor-exhibitor Raj Bansal, "Actresses are not as familiar with the commercial aspects as they should be." Filmmaking is about bringing something positive to the table, and they have their own perspectives on this."
He stated that there will always be stories that no one else wants to produce, but actresses believe they can create the best film for them! "It is always content that will hold, and if that does not, no film is going to work, however big the star," stated the director.
However, Bansal emphasizes the importance of budgeting. "A film like The Buckingham Murders has recovered its investment before the release through non-theatrical avenues and so it does not really matter if collections are not good!" He makes the case. "However, the terrain should be evaluated, and the target audience should not be limited to metropolitan areas. Also, if we look closely, directors such as Hansal Mehta (The Buckingham Murders) and Vasan Bala (Alia Bhatt's Jigra) do not cater to the masses."

Box Office 2023 Recap: Adipurush, Tejas, Kuttey and Shehzada saw over 69% drop in collections on 1st Monday as compared to the opening day :Bollywood Box Office — Bollywood Hungama
Strikingly it is the Prabhas starrer Adipurush that emerges as the biggest loser, recording a massive 78.61% drop in collections. On its release, the Om Raut directorial raked in Rs. 36 cr, however post its opening weekend, on its first Monday the film saw just Rs. 7.70 cr. coming in. The less than appreciative audience feedback seems to have severely affected the business of the film. Coming in a close second is the Kangana Ranaut starrer Tejas that saw a drop of 74.17% with its business going from Rs. 1.20 cr. on opening day to Rs. 0.31 cr. on its first Monday. The third release of 2023 that saw over 70% drop in business on its first Monday is the Arjun Kapoor starrer Kuttey that saw its collections dwindle from Rs. 1 cr. to Rs. 0.30 cr. registering an exact 70% drop.
Following these three releases, the Kartik Aaryan starrer Shehzada and the multi starrer Khichdi 2 that witnessed nearly 70% drop in business. While Shehzada that raked in Rs. 6 cr. on opening day saw a 69.71% drop with Rs. 1.82 cr. coming in on its first Monday, Khichdi 2 saw a drop of 68.18% from Rs. 1.10 cr. to Rs. 0.35 cr.
With Adipurush, Tejas, Kuttey, Shehzada and Khichdi 2 rounding off the top 5 biggest losers at the box office, releases like the Akshay Kumar — Emran Hashmi starrer Selfiee, the Tiger Shroff starrer Ganapath — A Hero is Born, and the Aditya Roy Kapur starrer Gumraah claim the sixth seventh and eighth spot respectively. Selfiee saw a drop of 56.86% from Rs. 2.55 cr. to Rs. 1.10 cr, Ganapath dropped by 56.82% from Rs. 2.20 cr. to Rs. 0.95 cr, amd Gumraah saw a drop of 53.57% from Rs. 1.12 cr. to Rs. 0.52 cr.
While the world of cinema is often filled with surprises and uncertainties, the disappointing box office performances of Adipurush, Tejas, and Kuttey in 2023 highlight the importance of effective storytelling, audience engagement, and strategic marketing. As filmmakers and industry enthusiasts reflect on the lessons learned from these setbacks, the hope remains that future releases will navigate the ever-evolving dynamics of the film industry more successfully.

“12th Fail” Triumphs at the Box Office: Vikrant Massey’s Inspiring Film Earns Rs 13 Crore
In a remarkable turn of events, Vikrant Massey’s latest film, “12th Fail,” has struck a chord with audiences, earning a substantial Rs 13 crore at the box office as of November 2. Despite facing stiff competition from Kangana Ranaut’s “Tejas,” this inspiring tale has managed to captivate viewers and carve a niche for itself in the realm of Indian cinema.
Directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, “12th Fail” unfolds the gripping real-life story of a dacoit-turned-IPS officer, delving into the incredible journey of IPS Officer Manoj Kumar Sharma and IRS Officer Shraddha Joshi. Vikrant Massey portrays the role of Manoj, with Medha Shankar playing the female lead, bringing this powerful narrative to life on the silver screen.
On November 2, the film added another feather to its cap by earning an impressive Rs 1.40 crore, bringing its total box office collection in India to a commendable Rs 13.14 crore. Despite the hurdles, “12th Fail” managed to maintain a 12.70% occupancy rate, showcasing its strong appeal among audiences.
The film’s storyline resonates deeply with the aspirations of countless Indian students who dream of becoming IAS or IPS officers. “12th Fail” serves as a testament to the transformative power of integrity, illustrating how one individual’s unwavering determination can bring about significant change in the country. What makes this film even more special is its unique backdrop — it is the first movie ever shot in Mukherjee Nagar, New Delhi, a location that has witnessed the emergence of generations of bureaucrats.
“12th Fail” draws inspiration from Anurag Pathak’s bestselling novel, meticulously weaving together the life stories of IPS Officer Manoj Kumar Sharma and IRS Officer Shraddha Joshi. Through its compelling narrative and stellar performances, the film sheds light on the resilience, passion, and dedication that drive individuals to overcome challenges and make a lasting impact on society.
As “12th Fail” continues to inspire and garner praise from audiences and critics alike, it stands as a testament to the power of storytelling and the ability of cinema to bring important real-life stories to the forefront. With its impressive box office performance and impactful storytelling, the film has undoubtedly earned its place among the noteworthy releases of the year.

Imran Khan on his mental health battle and seeking therapy after quitting Bollywood: “I felt damaged on the inside and I wanted to fix that”
Imran Khan revealed that he started seeking therapy in 2017 after quitting the industry.
Actor Imran Khan, known for his breakout role in Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na, initially soared to fame in the rom-com era but later faced a slump in his career. Despite a period of sparse opportunities, recent public appearances have sparked speculation about a potential comeback. Imran's appearance on the February 2024 cover of Vogue India fuels anticipation, where he discusses his career, quitting the industry after setbacks, and the box office failures.
Imran Khan revealed that he started seeking therapy in 2017 after quitting the industry. “I simply couldn’t be bothered to invest the time, energy and effort required to stay in this profession. I couldn’t bring myself to go to parties and socialize with people in the hope that someone would offer me a film,” he told Vogue India in an interview. “I felt damaged on the inside and I wanted to fix that. If you pull a hamstring, you go to the physiotherapist. You don’t feel good mentally? Seek therapy.”
The actor revealed that he kept his appointments with his psychoanalyst four times a week since 2017. “This was one of those defining decisions of my life. If you speak to someone who has given up an addiction or gone off alcohol,” he said, adding, “they could tell you the exact number of days they’ve been sober. It’s the same for me with my mental health. It’s been 2,500 days since I started my analysis on March 13, 2017.”
Imran Khan appeared in several movies like I Hate Luv Storys opposite Sonam Kapoor, Mere Brother Ki Dulhan opposite Katrina Kaif, Break Ke Baad opposite Deepika Padukone, Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu opposite Kareena Kapoor Khan, Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola opposite Anushka Sharma, and Once Upon a Time in Mumbai Dobaara, opposite Sonakshi Sinha. His last movie was Katti Batti opposite Kangana Ranaut in 2016.
