Mistakes I see very often communicating with Finnish learners (especially puhekieli)
VERB + accusative/genitive/partitive I know that choosing a genitive or a partitive is difficult and many people might choose to use the wrong declension, however, what I have noted is many people somehow forget to put the noun into any declension. This results in sentences like
*Ostin kakku. (I bought a cake) *Leivon leipä. (I bake a bread) *Otit selfie. (You took a selfie) when the correct sentences should be Ostin kakun. Leivoin leivän. Otin selfien. Do not be afraid to decline your nouns!
Overusing / not using the “Se on…” construction These are two different problems. Some people who speak English as a first language might say *Se on todella kuuma tänään. (It is very hot today.) when the correct sentence is Tänään on todella kuuma. The other issue comes to sentences like Hankin uuden auton. *On todella mukava. (I got a new car. It’s very nice.) when the sentence should be Hankin uuden auton. Se on todella mukava. A sentence must have a subject - existential sentences like when you describe weather do not need “se” even though English has it. The moral of the lesson, do not directly translate from English.
Using possessives in puhekieli We do not use the possessive suffixes in puhekieli. Therefore saying *Mun kirjani on hyllyssä (My book is on the shelf) would be incorrect, and instead Mun kirja on hyllyssä is correct.
Mixing puhekieli, dialects and kirjakieli in a way that makes no sense contextually/just would never happen with a native speaker A sentence like Me haetaan sinut! (We will get you!) is fine (mixing me&sinut (kirjakieli) with passive of hakea (puhekieli)) But a sentence like *Minä oon menos skurul veli. (minä (kirjakieli for I) oon menos (puhekieli for olen menossa, am going) skurul (old stadin slangi for raitiovaunulla, by tram) veli (new stadin slangi for bro)) Would be highly unlikely.
Using the abessive, instructive, comitative cases in puhekieli, not shortening the other declensions. The “proper” puhekieli variants for the three cases are “ilman NOUN(partitive)”, “NOUN(genitive) kanssa” and “mun/sun/sen/meidän/teidän/niiden NOUN(nominative)”. So you would say Kakutta > ilman kakkuu/kakkua Kakuitta > ilman kakkui/kakkuja Kakuin (singular) > kakun kanssa/kaa Kakuin (plural) > kakkujen kanssa/kaa Kakkumme > meidän kakut Kakussanne > teidän kakuis(sa) Please note that different dialects influence puhekieli. I would personally not use any of these, instead my dialect would produce Ilman kakkua, ilman kakkuja, kakuŋkaa, kakkujeŋkaa, meijjän kakut, teijjän kakuissa My way of speaking is close to creating a comitative…
Opening a diphthong puhekieli-style in one word and not doing it in the second one Example: *Haluun lukea (I want to read) or *Haluan lukee The most correct form is Haluun lukee (puhekieli) or Haluan lukea (kirjakieli)
This is however a thing that native speakers might also say, maybe starting a sentence with one type of speech, then thinking about the social situation further and code-switching midway. You want to learn the correct form nonetheless.

Kinda fucked up in a wondrous way that, as time passes and video games become a more and more expansive artform with forks upon forks in genres and subgenres and subsubgenres, thus games upon games upon games, there is the very real possibility that you are one of perhaps 15-ish people playing a specific video game in the whole world at any given time. I mean, I play Way of the Samurai 4 habitually, and apparently there’s around 16 other people that also do so (unrelated, there’s around 16 people in the world I want to kiss with tongue), and I’ll wager I’m perhaps the only one, or perhaps in the single digits, that still plays Kakutou Densetsu at some points in the day whenever I boot up the old workhorse.
Happens with movies, happens with books, especially books I’ll wager, but damn, it’s crazy to me to think that years ago, many years ago, a group of people got together and worked their asses off to make this game, and then decades later, maybe they even forgot about it, but there’s still someone, somewhere, on the surface, playing it, enjoying it, experiencing it. There’s always someone in the surface.

Watching episode 2 of Ranma reboot and it remains like a blast from the past.
Gonna be posting spoilers and screencaps to talk about it, so all of that's after the jump.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm sorry that I didn't appreciate the slapstick of the original manga because Rumiko Takahashi is kind of brilliant at it.
This gag sets you up to think Akane's about to hit him for yelling misogyny at her early in the morning, but then out of absolutely nowhere his fucking dad erupts from the aether and clocks him for it instead.
That's fantastic. It uses the familiar language not just of Ranma and Akane's established dynamic but of tsundere romances in general to set the gag up, and then hits it with a startling and unexpected swerve that still pays it off but in a way the audience didn't see coming.
Speaking of Genma, bits like this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ranma defeats Genma using the "Look, a distraction!" technique and it's funny because he won with what most martial arts anime would consider a cowardly tactic.
But it's funnier when you know the actual art he practices, 無差別格闘流 musabetsu kakutou-ryuu. Separately translated as either "Anything Goes Style of Martial Arts" or "Indiscriminate Grappling". The latter of which is hilariously specific, as 格闘 kakutou can mean wrestling or grappling but simply refers to weaponless styles of hand-to-hand fighting.
He's a fisticuffs brawler by trade, contrasting the various adversaries he faces throughout the series who are mostly tool- or weapon-based fighters, to varying degrees of esoteric oddity.
But what makes this so funny in hindsight is the "indiscriminate" part. Ranma's martial art is built around the idea that there are no rules and whatever gets you to the finish line is fine. This distraction isn't Ranma being cowardly; It's actually part of his martial art. This is how he was trained to fight. XD
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
You know, I actually forgot that Dr. Tofu... existed.
But setting that aside, once I remembered who this guy is, I forgot that he's implied to be an exceptionally talented martial artist. Capable of masking his presence so thoroughly that even Ranma can't detect his movements.
That's really interesting. To my recollection, Dr. Tofu never has a single fight in the entire series. Instead, his expertise simply serves as an explanation for his familiarity with all the wild and bizarre mystical maladies that come his way.
It lets him be like, "Oh yeah, the reason you're deathly ill is because someone hit you with the 5,000 year old forbidden Chinese Slow Death Syphilitic Pressure Point technique. Here, let me apply the three-step acupressure reversal technique that was lost to history."
But now I.
I kinda.
Want to see him fight.
(Has this dude been like the DBZA Popo of Ranma 1/2 this entire time?)
Tumblr media
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA She clocks him with the water kettle to make him respectfully bow.
I did not have the cultural context to understand that joke when I was young.
Rumiko Takahashi is so good at slapstick.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yeah, okay, I don't remember half of what I said about Akane when I was young but I recant all of it. She is so fucking cool.
Imagine if you had to do this every single morning. Every morning. No exception. Just to get to school. At sixteen.
And keep in mind that this is sexualized violence. These guys are trying to overpower her because they think she'll have to be their girlfriend if they beat her up. Every single one of them is sexually harassing her. With violence.
Fuck this entire situation, y'all. I hope she gives them all life-ruining physical injuries that ruin their ability to get scouted as professional athletes at this critical age and turn them into bitter and misanthropic thirty-somethings whining on the couch about how they peaked in high school.
That's probably not how it actually works in Japan. My American is showing. But nonetheless!
Tumblr media
She said "Kuno-senpai". She addresses him formally using his last name because that's a normal thing to do in Japan.
Subtitles, why are you changing the way characters speak to each other? The show is released with a dub and a sub alongside one another. If people are choosing to watching the sub, they don't need you to hold their hand and Americanize it for them.
She correctly calls him Kuno in the dub here. The dub is more accurate than the sub about this line. Don't. Do that.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This guy is such a dweeb he makes Jou-senpai look cool. They nailed Kuno, King Dipshit of the Jackass Mountain Akane has to climb each morning.
This is the guy who came up with the whole "Whoever beats the shit out of Akane may claim her as their trophy" thing. He probably watches Andrew Tate videos and writes internet screeds asking why women don't respect his authority and strength. Fuck this guy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Seriously. He just. Said this. About some girl in another class. And the boys in the school were all like, "Oh, yeah, that sounds reasonable. First one to break her leg gets the girl! Thanks for showing me the best way to express my masculinity, bruh!"
A wacky setup for Akane's personal background but also a chillingly accurate metaphor for how the Manosphere functions.
For his part, it's pretty clear that what Kuno is attracted to is martial strength. He becomes interested in the "Mystery Girl" that appeared after Ranma "fled" pretty much right after she beats his ass.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He's kind of an interesting parallel to Shampoo in that regard. I never really thought of that before, but both of their interests are predicated on how strong Ranma is.
He also makes for an interesting dynamic for Ranma, from a gender perspective. Ranma's curse and the constant menace of Kuno forces Ranma to endure firsthand the kind of harassment that Akane has to undergo in her day-to-day life.
Tumblr media
Of course, this being Ranma 1/2, Ranma's going to be getting that from both genders throughout the series. Rumiko Takahashi created a harem dodecahedron for her story, with Ranma and Akane being beset not just by rival suitors but also by rival suitors for their rival suitors trying to kill them and win the rival suitors' love.
Kuno's just one of the crowd.
But it was nonetheless an interesting choice to give Ranma a toxic male harasser as one of his suitors, that speaks to the interesting gender dynamics at play in the series.
One last thing. Something I really love about Ranma 1/2 is the way it uniquely changes the experience of just. Being around water. Like, the ever-presence of water especially in an island nation such as Japan is a constant threat.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
You really don't think about how much water there is in everyday life until you have a Jusenkyou curse.

New Ranma 1/2 Fanfic Chapter: Musabetsu Kakutō Ryū Tenka'ichi Budōkai Chapter 6
The next chapter of my Ranma and Dragonball crossover is now up.
The quarterfinals of the 21st World Martial Arts Tournament continues with Ranma facing off against some mysterious masked fighter who's identity is definitely a mystery.
Tumblr media
Breaking away and holding a defensive stance at a distance, Ranma took a moment to scan over the crowd, hoping to maybe catch the sight of one of her old friends. Unfortunately, she wasn’t able to recognize anyone, and with a small grumble she returned her focus back to her current opponent. Although that was only for a moment as her mind began to wander again as she charged back in. ‘At this point I’d take that one guy with the terrible sense of direction. Ryu something? Right, I had to basically lead him by the hand every time, and he always seemed so grumpy about stuff, but at least he was a good sparring partner. Plus, he had a really cool dog. Yeah, Shirokuro was the best. Ugh, what was that guy’s name? Ryu…Ryo…’ “Ryoga! That’s it!” Her sudden outburst seemed to surprise her opponent just long enough for her to get a solid kick to his head, knocking him to the ground. “The Masked Avenger is down, folks! Has the fiery haired fighter managed to prevail?” The 10 count was started, but the masked boy was able to get up with plenty of time left. Ranma couldn’t help but shake her head and grumble, “Dammit, those other sexist assholes went down way easier than this.”  The boy shot an angry, yet also befuddled look towards Ranma. “What did you just say?” “Nothing, just how much of a tough bastard you are,” the redhead responded while lightly rubbing her sore leg. “The heck are you made out of, anyway?” “No, not that. The other thing. What you said before.” He clarified, pointing an accusing finger her way. “Huh? Oh sorry, I was thinking about a different person I used to know,” Ranma answered with a dismissive wave. “Couldn’t find his way out of a room with one door, but he was still a pretty decent guy though. Oh, and he also had a pair of really cute fangs, just like the ones that…you…have…” The sudden look of realization on the masked boy’s face perfectly mirrored her own. “Wait, Ranma?” “Um, yeah,” the redhead said. “Hold on, are you…” “Oh my,” Kasumi declared to the audience, “it appears that our current fighters may in fact know each other.” “Yes, what an amazing turn of events,” the announcer added. “Oh, and our mysterious fighter is now removing his mask! Who shall we see hiding under-oh, it’s another mask. Wait, he’s removing that one, and…there’s a third one under it.” “Oh, how interesting,” Kasumi noted. “Our masked contestant has certainly gone to great lengths to keep his identity a secret.” “I don’t know, Sis,” Nabiki deadpanned from the side. “I’m pretty sure this guy is just a complete idiot.” “Ryoga, It is you!” Ranma happily yelled out.

PC Engine - Ranma ½ Datou Gansou Musabetsu Kakutou-Ryu!
Title: Ranma ½ Datou Gansou Musabetsu Kakutou-Ryu! / らんま1/2打倒、元祖無差別格闘流!
Developer/Publisher: Klon / NCS Masaya
Release date: 2 October 1992
Catalogue No.: NSCD2009
Genre: Fighting
Format: Super CD-ROM2
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As a beat 'em up, the game is pretty competent, but where it really shines is presentation. The scenes between levels are well drawn and very funny in places and are the glue that holds the game together, this combination makes the whole package greater than the sum of its parts and a fantastic bit of entertainment, especially for Ranma fans.
