Whats the best place you've been in the Philippines? (Cities, museums, other sights)
LOVE THIS QUESTION.
I've been to a lot of places here and I personally love the old places. I've been to a few beaches but by far, the coolest beach I've been to was at Baler bc it's THE PACIFIC OCEAN. Like, THAT'S INSANE and I surfed there 😌
I went to Vigan when I was 10 and I want to go back bc as a kid, I never appreciated it. All I cared about was going back to the place that we were staying at bc behind it was the beach 😂😭
There was this science museum thing at Marikina and I went there bc it was a field trip and I LOVED EVERY SINGLE MOMENT OF IT. It was interactive and shit and my young self was so happy.
I went to Bataan when I was 15 and it was beautiful and the hotel we stayed at was fancy and the architecture there was amazing and it was definitely my aesthetic. AND THE MALL NEXT TO THE HOTEL HAD THE MOST AESTHETIC ARCHITECTURE EVER. It was like renaissance or smth.
My fave place in central Manilais definitely Intramuros.

WTF! Friend of Rio States What Really Happened The Day of His Death! What Ever Happened To THIS Version of Spider-Man? Will There Be A Season 4 of The Rose?! #QNA
Image from Pivot Spider-Man Season 5, Episode 3 entitled Crisis on Infinite Earths, Part 1 (released December 10th, 2019)
As we all know the Imprint Studios arc of Pivot Spider-Man has gone on 6 years and apparently STILL going strong as the studio plans to continue its series with its original characters and its original plan continues. Fight scenes are being improved, and storylines as well. The series is being built from Rio’s estate and is said to be the BEST work yet since 2017-2018.
Rio confirmed he would be working on animation after he finished the big project he claimed to be working on right before his passing, but he never said what series he would be continuing. However the studio has confirmed they will be re-focusing on The Rose and finishing what the late rapper couldn’t and continue the rest of the season and decide a few episodes left of S3 on whether or not they want to continue the series or end it without cancelling it.
Rio stated months earlier that he hoped the series would reach full potential and continue on for years to come, also confirming a Season 4 but he only spoke on how he wanted to do another season. The studio would usually confirm what shows are getting renewed but they haven’t done it yet due to focusing on Rio’s posthumous album.
NOW ONTO TODAY’S TOPIC
We will be answering a lot of unanswered questions that fans have had since back in 2017 starting off with one BIG question. Whatever happened to Season 5’s Spider-Man/Peter Parker? As we know the beginning of Season 5 started off with a Savitar threat and unofficially ended only 3 episodes in with Spider-Man & The Flash sacrificing themselves at the end of the episode and Dylen getting arrested later on.
All three episodes were back to back right after the premiere of The Rose Season 3, which after the first episode (aired September 21st 2019) did not air again until February 21st of 2020/ five months later. The Spider-Man season was always meant to be continued but was forgotten about due to Rio’s new focus on music & in The Rose.
“I may never stop animating that show, even if it never goes anywhere and it’s just something fun on the side even as a 30-year old, I will probably never stop. Just because it’s mine,” Rio said. “There’s nothing a person should love more than something they’ve worked on for years & years. F**k the views, screw the likes, it’s YOURS. Something for you to continuously be proud of no matter what anybody says. It’s your world.”
Rio did actually answer a question that has a similar answer to this.
“Whatever people feel I forget from the past of the work I’ve done, I haven’t,” Rio laughed, “[really] haven’t. I’m not the old show runner of The Flash *chuckles* I remember everything trust me. If I haven’t spoken on something in a while to answer an old question then it doesn’t mean I’m not aware, it either means it’s coming or I’m legitimately ignoring the plot hole on purpose.”
So it’s actually very possible that Rio was getting to that plot hole of Season 5’s Spider-Man. But since his passing, does this mean the plot may never be solved? Not necessarily. We may have actually already had it solved and not realized it yet. Let’s explain!
Rio & Lovro, the ones who created Imprint Studios, both at one point confirmed that they do have their own cinematic universe. Which means it is possible that Season 5 ended exactly as it was intended. With Spider-Man’s death. Why’s that? Originally, Rio stated that Peter Parker from The Rose is the same version from the Spider-Man series but then later stated that Peter Parker from the original series & the version from The Rose are completely different people. The studio also said that the version from the mini series they’re working on is from a different earth as well, thus to separate their worlds. For now.
Rio first showed us the multiverse by showcasing Warlord Productions, aka The Marvel-Man’s version of Spider-Man during a mini crossover event. As well as Spider 2049 on Catch You On The Flipside, Season 2 of Pivot Spider-Man. I brought this up with one of the show runners and this is what they had to say to clear up all the miscommunication.
“Rio never wanted his version of Peter Parker to be the same version in Pivot Spider-Man, he wanted to keep them together but separate Earths. He really wanted to do a crossover multiverse event, which we were all down for but we all were young teens with classes to take and high school drama 24/7. We just never had the time or the energy to do a project like that.
I’m not really supposed to get into anything that has to do with the multiverse, but because that episode is so dry on it’s ending I will. Rio always intended to finish Season 5 because he built such a great story out of it but after his break up and stopped focusing on animation & focused much more on music. The sad part is that we didn’t know that because of that one major event it changed his life so drastically to the point where he was doing sh*t we never expected out of him, plus he was continuously getting broken-hearted even after her. We didn’t know that it was even possible to pass on with a broken heart, but it happened & now we have to push on with his work even now KNOWING what was on his mind even just hours before passing… he just wanted to make people happy, spread love, and in his own words ‘stay out the way & make music.’ When he said he didn’t want any problems with anybody, he meant it. He was just chillin man… but if I’m being totally honest, even if he had survived I know that he did it because he wanted to. Not because of a b*tch, he already didn’t give a f**k & wasn’t looking for anybody before. What would’ve changed? Absolutely nothing in a matter of hours, absolutely nothing.”
As you can see, he was very emotional about the topic of his brothers passing. But was it also right to let us know the truth of his death? Everyone so far has tried to keep the positivity of his memory alive but this news alone leaves us with a scarring image. He confirms that there is no way that the artist would’ve killed himself over a woman, simply because Rio just did his own thing and was a chill person. The rapper had (at that point) been in several failed relationships most of them ending with the girl leaving or doing something stupid to hurt him. At the time of his death he had been single for over six months, no relationships and from what his friend says - he wasn’t looking for one.
“All bro would say is just how he wanted to be happy. But… when he wasn’t dating anybody, he didn’t talk about girls, he didn’t watch the dovey movies, like if we was f**ked up he’d crack a couple jokes, talk about it in music but he just did his own thing. Rio would laugh a lot to cope with anxiety but I’ll never know if he was really ever truly happy.”

Bigg Boss 13 day 128 written update episode 128 February 5: Mahira gets upset as Paras-Rashami talk about his girlfriend Akanksha, Asim reveals he dated elder woman - tv
As the media interaction continued on Bigg Boss 13, Wednesday’s episode was full of shocking and surprising revelations. Here are the top highlights from tonight’s episode: The press conference inside the house continued as the episode opened on Wednesday night. Sidhrath Shukla was asked if he began distancing himself from Shehnaaz Gill after host Salman Khan warned him that was in love, and he responded that not much has changed between the two. They have other issues that they have already talked about, he added.
Asked if her attachment with Sidharth was for the game, Shehnaaz insisted her bond was real, adding that Sidharth has invested time on her which is the reason she started following him. When Asim Riaz was asked about having dated anyone or being in a relationship, he denied it. He was informed about a woman who has been tweeting that she was never iin relationship with him. “There is no girlfriend. Kaun hai ye (who is this)?,” Asim yelled. Asim is told that he has claimed he was in relationship and ended it before entering the Bigg Boss house, but the person in question has been tweeting it was not a relationship. “Mere hisab se Also read: Chahatt Khanna rubbishes estranged husband Farhan’s claims of dating Ribbhu Mehra, calls him a ‘psychopath’“Ek abhi aya hai. Mujhe lag raha 2-4 bhi aur kar sakte hain. Jis hisab se mai raha hu. Koi abhi aa k bolega (I think just one person has surfaced right now but 2-4 more can surface, given the way I have been. Maybe someone will come and say) Asim you didn’t breakup. What I am clear is I love Himanshi Khurana and I am with her,” Asim said.
After the conference ended, the media was asked to vote for their favourite contestants and get that person into the elite club. While Shehnaaz was given twelve votes, Paras Chhabra received nine, Mahira Sharma received one, and Arti Singh none, and Rashami received fifteen votes, making her the third member of the Bigg Boss 13 Elite Club, after Sidharth and Asim.Soon, Shehnaaz was seen crying and an angry Sidharth told her she should avoid getting used if he has been using her. Sidharth and Shehnaaz fought over their answers during the QnA. Shehnaaz asked him how could he say something like ‘Ab Asim ke paas jaegi (Now she will go to Asim)’.
Sidharth asked her, “Shehnaaz ye rone se kya ho raha hai? Maine kya kiya tha? Mujhe kyu bola baat mat karna? (What will you get crying? What did I do that you refused to talk to me?).”Shehnaaz claimed Sidharth said Shehnaaz would go for live in with Paras. She kept crying. Sidharth first insisted he did not say, but eventually he got angry and they ended with an ugly heated discussion and Sidharth said he could also get angry and walked away. After Sidharth left, Rashami hugged Shehnaaz and asked what was wrong. When she held her in arms, Shehnaaz asked her not to, saying, “mat kar fir aata hai dukhda roti hai (Do not ask me, people will say I come and rant infront of you).”Shehnaaz then cried about what Mahira and others said about her. Rashami told Shehnaaz that she should stop giving free help and advice to everyone. Asim then talked to Sidharth, Paras and Arti about his relationship, and revealed he was in a relationship with a woman elder to him. Sidharth joked the woman was 40, and a teacher. Mahira then asked about a doctor and Asim blushed. He first said that was different but then claimed he never dated a doctor. Later, Sidharth went upto Shehnaaz and asked her to get up and spend some time with him. Shehnaaz asked him to clean utensils in return and surprisingly, Sidharth agreed to share the kitchen duties. Arti also told Rashami that she looked happier as a single woman, hinting at her recent announcement that she was done with Arhaan. Paras then talked about Akanksha with Rashami. Rashami said he sounded thankless when he talked about the girl. Mahira was not happy that the discussion was happening. She asked Paras not to speak, neither against nor for the woman (Akanksha) and said he should sort it out with her instead of taking advices from people. Next morning, Paras and Mahira fought over a plate of fruits. Paras then went upto Mahira and tried to get her up. Sidharth, who was right there, asked Paras what was wrong. They then began making fun of her, Sidharth asked if Paras kissed her or pushed her, he even asked if he breathed and that infuriated her. Paras responded that he ate fruits before Mahira, forcing Sidharth to respond with, “Shadi kar le (Get married!).” Bigg Boss then announced that everyone would be nominated for evictions for the week. Welcome to Awards Season Part 1 – A Simple Primer
Not many people realize this, but I’ve been writing about awards and the Oscar race for almost 18 years; I’ve been an expert on the Gold Derby probably for 13 years of those.
Unfortunately, in recent years, I haven’t really had a paying outlet to write about awards season. I’ve decided that this year I’m going to make an extra effort to go back to writing about awards. Although I’m already writing three movie columns a week, I’m going to add this as my fourth semi-weekly column with the plan being to try to get it up every Monday or Tuesday latest over the next few weeks, although Thursday may be more realistic. I guess we’ll see what happens.
For this first chapter, I want to talk very simply about some of the players in the annual Oscar race once awards season officially begins in early December. (A little house-cleaning note to point out that although some of the awards are handed out early in the year after the movies come out, I’m still listing them for the year the movie came out i.e. the 2018 Oscars were actually handed out in 2019 even though I have it listed as 2018. Got it?)
The Academy Awards or Oscars (Voted on by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences or AMPAS)
This is the big mamajama of awards season, as it’s the last awards given in a run that begins in early December with the Oscar often taking place in late February or even March. Next year’s 92nd Oscars will take place earlier than usual on February 9, cutting down the amount of time for campaigning and such.
There’s a reason why the Oscars are so important, and that’s because the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) is made up of 9,000 plus members of the film industry in various capacities from producers, directors and actors to publicists and execs. In July, the Academy invited 842 new members to join, 50% of which were women and 29% were people of color in hopes of creating more diversity in the group and its awards. Presumably, the Academy is also becoming younger and hipper by inviting some of the new members, and they’ve also bringing in some of the bigger TV stars like Elisabeth Moss and Sterling K. Brown as they become more involved in films. The acting branch of the Academy makes up the largest percentage of the Academy, which is something that always needs to be taken into consideration when trying to pick Best Picture winners.
The Academy votes in 24 categories with the biggest change being the “Foreign Language” category now called “International Feature,” although it still involves different countries submitting their choice of movie to compete in a culling that will eventually get them down to 5 nominations. This year, 93 countries have submitted their films, so that’s a lot of watching for the nominating committee to do. They’ll announce a shortlist in December and then the nominations in all categories will be announced on January 13, 2020. Best Picture is the only category with more than five nominees – hair/make-up is usually just three – and there can be anywhere between five and ten Best Picture nominees, which I’ll explain later. After Best Picture, the Directing category is fairly important as are the four acting categories and two screenplay ones (separated into adapted and original), and then there’s a ton of technical awards.
There’s a lot more to talk about, but I’ll probably talk about individual categories in a later installment. The point is that many people who won’t watch or care about any of the other awards listed below will make an effort to watch the Oscars every year. They’re just that big.
Recent Winners:
2018: Green Book
2017: The Shape of Water
2016: Moonlight
2015: Spotlight
2014: Birdman
The Golden Globes (Voted on by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association or HFPA)
This is maybe one of the biggest grey areas when it comes to awards, because the average layman probably doesn’t know much about these awards or the organization that gives them out.
Many Oscar bloggers and film critics throw shade at the group because they’re known to be kind of wacky sometimes, like the year where they gave “Best Film Comedy/Musical” to Ridley Scott’s The Martian.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association is fairly transparent about what it is from its very name. It’s a group based in Hollywood, and it’s made up of foreign press, mainly journalists and photographers who cover the entertainment industry and take pictures for foreign publications but live in Hollywood. They’re also fairly secret about their membership, but there’s roughly 90 members with a different President elected every year or two. Unlike the Oscars, they do separate three categories into “Drama” and “Comedy/Musical”: Best Film, Actor and Actress. Because of this, they end up with ten nominees in the actor/actress category but also ten Picture nominees divided between the categories. Most of the time both of the Golden Globe Film Film winners will be nominated for an Oscar Best Picture. Because the Golden Globes ceremony is often before the Oscar nominations are even announced, they can often influence Academy members to at least check out those movies.
Oh, the Golden Globes also include TV categories, but I’m really going to stay focused on the film ones, which also includes Director, Screenplay, Animated Film and Foreign Film but no technical awards.
Golden Globes have generally been all over the place when it comes to picking the same movie that wins the Oscar for Best Picture, although having two Best Picture winners makes it easier, hence the GGs went with Green Book for last year and Moonlight two years ago, but has just as often missed the boat completely.
Recent Winners:
2018: Bohemian Rhapsody (Drama); Green Book* (Comedy/Musical)
2017: Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (Drama); Lady Bird (Comedy/Musical)
2016: Moonlight* (Drama); La La Land (Comedy/Musical)
2015: The Revenant (Drama); The Martian (Comedy/Musical)
2014: Boyhood (Drama); The Grand Budapest Hotel (Comedy/Musical)
*Won the Oscar for Best Picture
Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAG)
SAG-Aftra is probably the strongest of the industry guilds, because it’s such a vast group with thousands of members, all actors, although that doesn’t necessarily mean that those actors will necessarily agree with the smaller group of actors in the Academy. It’s a good likeliness that every actor in the Academy’s acting branch is also a member of SAG, but not necessarily the other way round. SAG also could include small bit players and background actors who have worked enough to get their SAG card but maybe aren’t well known enough to be invited to join the Academy... and some of them maintain their SAG membership for the perks like free screenings with QnAs in this time of year. SAG uses nominating committees to make its selections for the nominations that the entire group then votes on.
Like the Golden Globes, SAG also has TV categories, but there are basically six feature film categories. Ensemble, Lead Actor, Lead Actress, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress and Stunt Ensemble. There’s also some overlap between the SAG nominations and the Oscar ones in those middle four categories but sometimes there’s only three or four in common.
This year’s nominations will be announced on December 11, which is two days after the Golden Globe nominations, but still well ahead of the Oscars. This year’s SAG Awards will take place on January 19 which is a little under a week after the Academy announces it Oscar nominations. Even so, winning a SAG Award is still well-respected, because it is an industry award, unlike the Golden Globes and some of the ones mentioned below.
The SAG Ensemble award tends to be the one to watch because it might go to a movie with great acting but maybe not one that will also do well with the technical branches.
The last time the SAG Ensemble award coincided with Oscar Best Picture was 2015 with Spotlight, but the winner in that category does show that there might be support among the biggest group of the Academy: actors. There was the famous time when Juliane Fellowes’ Gosford Park won SAG’s Ensemble award which gave it a much bigger push for the Oscars, although Ron Howard’s A Beautiful Mind ended up winning that year.
Recent Winners (Outstanding Ensemble):
2018: Black Panther
2017: Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
2016: Hidden Figures
2015: Spotlight*
2014: Birdman*
*Won the Oscar for Best Picture
(Note: In the last three years, the SAG Ensemble winner didn’t win Oscar’s Best Picture and the last two Best Picture winners were not even nominated for a SAG Ensemble, breaking a very long standing tradition.)
Directors Guild (DGA), Producers Guild (PGA) and Writers Guilds (WGA)
Also very well-respected guilds even though, like SAG, there are far more members in these three groups than there are directors, producers or writers in the Academy. More than likely, if a writer, producer or director is in the Academy, they’re also in one of these groups, but that’s not always the case.
The Directors Guild has had the best track record in terms of winners of the best Feature Director being the director of what goes onto win Best Picture. That’s changed in more recent years, just like it’s changed that the Oscar’s Best Picture and Director frequently went to the same film. These days, a DGA win just means that the director is likely to get an Oscar in the directing category, as well. It’s interesting to note that five of the last DGA winners were Mexican. In fact, the three directors – Alfonso Cuaron, Guillermo del Toro and Alejandro Iñáritu – were once known as the “Three Amigos,” and two of them have now won that award twice. The last six DGA winners went on to win the corresponding Oscar for directing. Before that, Ben Affleck won the DGA for Argo but wasn’t nominated for an Oscar as director, even though Argo won Best Picture. Next year’s DGA Awards will take place on January 25, a week after SAG.
The Producers Guild is a little different because they only give out three key feature film awards and their motion picture award goes to the producers. The PGA Awards will take place on January 18, 2020, the day before SAG’s ceremony. Like DGA, the PGA award usually foretold the Best Picture winner, but that’s also changed with a few misses in recent years. It’s also been thought that the PGA tends to with the biggest moneymaker of the year but that’s also changed quite drastically in recent years. That said, the PGA has picked the last two movies that went on to win Best Picture so it’s an award to watch.
The Writers Guild is also fairly well-established and respected, because movie writers are so important, while often being the most trod-upon and under-appreciated in the film industry. The fact is that you can’t have a good movie without a good script. Everybody knows this, and for every great script that is made into a great movie, there’s probably 1,000 that never see the light of day. The WGA doesn’t always necessarily match-up with the Oscar for Best Picture but it is a pretty good precursor for a movie to win an Oscar for its screenplay, and every so often the two categories coincide. But the WGA is a very different group from the Academy because it’s solely made up of writers and some scripts just fare better among other writers as the final movies do among larger industry groups. That’s just the way that it is.

Other Guilds
There are many other technical guilds that are closely associated with individual categories at the Oscars, but there are way too many to list or mention or go through. Put it this way. There’s a guild for cinematographers called the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC), one for editors called the American Cinema Editors who give out the annual Eddie Awards (named after me, of course), plus guilds for costumes, production design and on and on and on. Most Academy members in the respective branches are usually also in these guilds but not vice versa. I’ll talk more about this in a few columns from now.
The Critics Choice Awards (Voted on by the Critics Choice Association aka CCA – formerly the Broadcast Film Critics Association or BFCA)
The Broadcast Film Critics Association has been around for quite some time with awards going back to 1995, and as luck would have it, it’s one of the groups that I’m actually a member of, so I can talk about it with a little inside knowledge. It’s since been redubbed the Critics Choice Association since they do give out the “Critics Choice Awards” and it’s a very large and diverse group mainly made up of critics from television and radio who may not necessarily be on RottenTomatoes (take note. Attenberg!) but also have far more populist tastes that frequently line up with the movie industry as a whole. There have definitely been interesting years like the one in which Ben Affleck and Argo won in the group’s top categories the same week (it may have been the same day!) when Affleck was snubbed for a directing Oscar nomination.
The last time the BFCA coincided with the Oscars was in 2017 when they presaged the Best Picture win by The Shape of Water. Last year’s Roma win was a pretty significant step forward for Netflix, which may be why Netflix has been deliberately wining and dining the CCA all awards season with big events in New York and Los Angeles for its major contenders. We’ll see if it pays off when the CCA announces its nominees on Sunday, December 8, but the actual winners won’t be announced until the broadcasted awards show on January 12, the Sunday directly between the Golden Globes and SAG Awards.

2017: The Shape of Water*
2016: La La Land
2015: Spotlight*
2014: Boyhood
*Won the Oscar for Best Picture
The New York Film Critics Circle (NYFCC)
When it comes to film critics groups, the long-standing New York group tends to receive the most respect among those in the industry, because New York is such an important place for film criticism in outlets like The New York Times and the now-defunct Village Voice. The fact is that some of the toughest veteran film critics are based in New York and are mostly members of this group. I’ve been writing reviews for 18 years, yet I’m not a member. The group will vote on their awards this year on Wednesday, December 4, but they’ll have an official awards dinner bash in early January where many of the winners will attend. Last time they coincided with Oscar Best Picture was 2011, when they picked The Artist, but this is a critics group and their tastes tend to be rather different from those actually in the industry. You can generally figure that the winner of the NYFCC’s Best Film will at least get a nomination for Best Picture.
Recent Winners (Best Film)
2018: Roma
2017: Lady Bird
2016: La La Land
2015: Carol
2014: Boyhood
Los Angeles Film Critics Association (LAFCA)
On the opposite side of the country, Los Angeles has its own set of film critics, who are more in the thick of awards season, although they have a much more diluted brand, especially with the Hollywood Foreign Press and the fairly new Hollywood Critics Association (see below). In fact, and maybe it’s because I live in New York, you don’t really hear much about the group year-round until they announce their awards. (And seriously, they only have one African-American member?!?) Still, they’ve been around a long time, since the mid ‘70s and they’re a fairly well-respected group. Like the NYFCC, they throw a pretty big party to hand out their awards even though they’re picked in a group meeting in early December, most likely this weekend. The last time the group coincided with the Oscars was 2016 when they picked Moonlight, one of the few groups to coincide with the Oscars that year. You can see that many critics went with Roma last year, because it was one of the stronger overall movies, even if Green Book won the Oscar.
Recent Winners (Best Film):
2018: Roma
2017: Call Me By Your Name
2016: Moonlight*
2015: Spotlight*
2014: Boyhood
*Won the Oscar for Best Picture
National Board of Review (NBR) (Voted on by NBR members)
What can I say about the National Board of Review that doesn’t sound completely disparaging? It’s a group not necessarily made up of critics and definitely not made up of anyone in the industry, but it’s a group that sees most of the year’s movies and offers a bunch of awards early in the awards season. It’s also one of the longest-running movie groups, having been around for over a hundred years, and the group is decidedly older, so maybe some of the people who started the group are still around. I would not go as far as saying they’re a group that’s easily bought but like the Hollywood Foreign Press, they tend to get QnAs and meet-and-greet time with talent from the movies more than many other groups, so they’re considered to be quite legit even if their picks rarely match up with the Best Picture winner… except for last year when Green Bookdid end up winning Best Picture. Not sure if that says something good about the NBR or bad about the Academy…
Recent Winners (Best Film):
2018: Green Book*
2017: The Post
2016: Manchester by the Sea
2015: Mad Max: Fury Road
2014: A Most Violent Year
*Won the Oscar for Best Picture
Film Independent Spirit Awards aka The Indie Spirits (Voted on by Film Independent members)
As the name might imply, the Indie Spirits are basically the “indie Oscars” and they usually even take place the night before the actual Oscars, but often pick a movie that might not necessarily win Oscar. That actually wasn’t the case from 2015 to 2016hen the Indie Spirits picked the same movie that went on to win Best Picture
Film Independent announced the nominees for its 35thannual awards on November 21, over two months before its awards. Its “Best Feature” picks are Terrence Malick’s A Hidden Life, Clemency, Lulu Wang’s The Farewell, Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story and the Safdie Brothers’ Uncut Gems, starring Adam Sandler. Only the Safdies received a directing nomination and Sandler received a nomination for lead actor, but Marriage Story is getting the Robert Altman award for its cast and director, so I still think it’s between that and The Farewell to win. This year’s nominations are just so out there in places – Noah Jupe AND Shia LaBeouf are both supporting for Honey Boy? How does that work exactly? –– it almost feels as if the Indie Spirits are now deliberately trying to be the anti-Oscars.
Recent Winners (Best Feature):
2018: If Beale Street Could Talk
2017: Get Out
2016: Moonlight*
2015: Spotlight*
2014: Birdman*
*Won the Oscar for Best Picture
British Academy Film Awards aka The BAFTAs (Voted on by BAFTA members)
I honestly don’t know a ton about BAFTA and its membership, although, despite the name, it’s not just Brits. I know many Americans, including quite a few in the movie business that are voting members of BAFTA. I do know that it’s one of the longer-running awards though, as it was introduced way back in 1947. It is one of the later awards announced in the season, so it could potentially have some influence on the actual Oscars but they’re currently on a five-year “losing streak” in that none of their Best Films have also won the Oscar.
Their pick for Best Film has not coincided with the Oscars since 2013’s 12 Years a Slave.
Recent Winners (Best Film):
2018: Roma
2017: Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
2016: La La Land
2015: The Revenant
2014: Boyhood
The Gotham Awards (Voted on by IFP members)
The Gotham Awards are another semi-vague award usually given out as the very start of the official awards season by IFP aka the Independent Filmmaker Project. Like the Indie Spirits, it’s very much focused on the lower-budget indie projects made each year. The Gothams are nominated by a select group of film critics, journalists, curators as well as festival programmers and then voted on by IFP members that includes writers, directors and others involved in the independent film world.
The Gothams had a pretty good track record with picking the same movie as the Oscars until the last few years, but like the Indie Spirits, they usually are going for lower-budget films. This year’s Gotham Awards nomination for Best Feature are Lulu Wang’s The Farewell, Noah Baumbach’s Marriage Story, Hustlers, Uncut Gems and Trey Edward Schults’ Waves. I only expect the first two to get Oscar Best Picture nominations, and one of those will probably win the Gotham’s top prize as well. Oddly, the Gothams matched up with the Oscar Best Picture the same year the Indie Spirits did… maybe that’s because there are some of the same people on the nominating committees? Last year’s win by Chloé Zhao’s The Rider was an eye-opening anomaly.
Recent Winners (Best Feature):
2018: The Rider
2017: Call Me by Your Name
2016: Moonlight*
2015: Spotlight*
2014: Birdman*
*Won the Oscar for Best Picture
Other Regional Film Critics and Online Film Critics
Again, not to be disparaging because I’ve been a long-standing member of the New York Film Critics Online (NYFCO) for almost 15 years, but there are a TON of regional and online critics groups now, many that have popped out of the woodwork in the past decade. Sure, there’s important ones like Boston and Chicago, major cities with a fairly vast and diverse group of critics, but I know a few critics who are members of three or four groups since there can be a city-based group, a larger group for the state and then a third for the region of the country.
I’m not sure if I should lump the National Society of Film Critics into this group, as it’s far more prestigious than many of these but it also tends to wait until January to vote and announce its awards. The Hollywood Critics Association (formerly the Los Angeles Online Film Critics Society, which is quite a mouthful) is one of the newer groups but they’ve already announced their nominations for the year, so they’re clearly trying to be “First!” (They also have mid-year awards.)
I’m not even going to mention OFCS (Online Film Critics Society) – oops, just did – which has been around forever, mainly since that international group of online critics never accepted me, so who needs ‘em? (Remember what Groucho Marx said about not wanting to be a member of a club that won’t have him as a member?) Fact is that many of the smaller online groups (including NYFCO) were formed due to shenanigans with the people running OFCS. Either way, they’ll announce their nominations on Dec. 20 and winners on Jan. 6, 2020.
I’m going to try my best to make this a semi-weekly column, so look for Part 2 sometime after Thanksgiving!

metr0con 2019 saturday diary
cosplayed/breakfast: same as the other 2 diaries. snack: a twin kitkat.
my eyes only, buckaroo. for future me.
can i b real w u i waited until 3 am to type this n a lot (esp from panels/early in the day) is HELLA fuzzy!!! sry! ;w; also it’s like. 4 am as im typing this n im not in the mood to write a diary! recalling everything is tiring, yknow? n i need to go to bed ghh... anyway!!
we left late bc i couldnt decide who to cosplay n i arrived late :(( anyway, it hadnt been 5 minutes there when i dropped my plastic purple heart ring i had from the dentist n i was so sad :( but i went to the bn-ha panel n i dont remember a lot of it sry. i remember iida wore a giant floppy sunhat that said Sunny Vibes on it tho n momo wore a black n white striped dress w sunflowers!
After this was cafe-stuck and it was fun! everyone kept calling jade a furry n i asked nepeta if she’d ever seen Nyan Neko Sugar G!rls to which she said no n someone asked her if she’d heard of/seen nek0para n she said she’d heard of it but it was “a bit.. too Extreme/Much for me.....” and someone asked the group (vriska, jade, john, dave, nepeta, tavros, aradia) why they were doing this and they said it was equius’ and john’s (i think?) prank that got way too out of hanf bc kanaya made the outfits for reals. someone asked vriska if she was a furyr cuz she had a spidersona and throughout the panel vriska and tavros kept talking abt how vriska took away his legs/him not having any. i asked the aradia n vriska if they’d work good together to make a good hall0ween themed cafe if this cafe were real n they were like “what’s hall0ween?” n the others told them it was a holiday that had candy n dead bodies n stuff! n someone asked abt who has the least human rights or just rights in general n john was like “jade u dont rights, ur an animal” n jade was like “trans rights”.
i decided to skip the d-dlc panel bc i didnt rly wanna write poetry cuz i do that at home n i dont rly care abt theories n discussing stuff like that so! i went walking around the dealers room n stuff. my crown actually came off at this time n i remember feeling like my crown had fallen off bc i thought i heard the mini whoosh it makes when it falls down but when i looked behind me, it wasnt there so i checked the aisles nearby n it wasnt there so i assumed someone had snatched it off my head but after a lot of walking, i found it half-underneath a con table w black tablecloth?? so i picked it up n went to the cosplay help desk and the guy safety-pinned it to my wig so i was all good to go!!
after that, i tried to look around to see if i could find any ens-tars cosplayers bc the meerup but i didnt see any so i was like oh well whatever im going to the LL panel anyway. so i went to the aki hana panel n i have videos of it! so im not rly gonna talk abt it. they played kings game there tho and “who’s most likely”! they said “who’d like an!mal crossing the best” n my immediate thought was rin so i raised my hand but the answer they had thought of was kotori, which actually makes much more sense haha. they said my answer was valid tho. i still got candy for answering! anyway the punk set ruby next to me ended up being the hifumi from yesterday that gave me the flower tin n they said it was nice to see me again n i said i wasnt able to go to the ES meetup bc i was only told when it was, not where it was, n they said that Eri/Eli (?) 9im guessing that was the host of the meetup) had to cancel it n i went oh. at the end of the panel i received a kotori pic! also a girl dressed up as a witch complimented my tsukasa outfit n i knelt down n said “thank you, princess” or smth i was like “i had a ring that i was gonna use to like. pretend to give to pretty girls but.. i lost it” n they seemed flattered but we parted ways!
after this was the aqours panel n the hanamaru did a dance n the you also did one but then they started playing the p0cky game n Headphones n i got kind of bored so i left n i heard “tsukasa!” n it was the jakurai from yesterday (that told me abt the meetup) dressed as mao in a yukata w their friend as oni ritsu n they looked so good! the jakumao apologized saying the meetup was cancelled. i think we talked for a sec then i went to go check out the rw-by q n a n it was a whole lot of roasting from the audience haha bc they did questions one at a time (ex: questions for yang, now questions for blake...) n i asked yang how she gets her hair so nice n she went “...nice?” w an unbelieving laugh/tone then they moved on n i was confused but oh well! they asked summer how she felt abt sloppy seconds bc taiyang n how taiyang’d feel abt a 3rd wife n nora got asked how many pancakes she could eat at a time n she was like “how much time do ya have?” n after the qna they started playing a weird game n it was rly boring so i left but the panel was almost over anyway.
after i left i ran into a ramuda n they recognized me as tsukasa n they’re into ES n they said they hadnt watched the anime yet n they were surprised to see valkyrie in it bc they thought they werent gonna b but they said they hope the anime doesnt butcher shhu bc they like shu n know a lot of ppl hate shu n stuff. we talked abt the ES cosplayers at the con for a bit n i told them abt the ritsu+mao cosplayers n we had anice time talking n they said they rly liked rabits n i was like oh dude me too!! “i havent met anyone who hates ryu-seitai. like, Good.” n they were like “how could you hate ryu-seitai, they all wanna b nice n make friends” n i was like “yea mayb except midori” there was more but yea! i also ran into the witch girl n her friend from earlier bc they went “tsukasa!!!” n her friend (cosplayin smth from hn-k) showed me they had/got a leo plush n i was like “OH MY GOD. HE’S FINALLY BEEN FOUND!! HOLD ON CAN WE HAV A PIC W IT” so we took a pic of the leo plush beside my “where is leo??” sign like!! hell yea! n i was like “leo needs to pay child support. he’s evading his taxes. tax fraud” or smth around this point i think. at some point, on the escalators, i noticed a juto n a samatoki but when they got off the scalator they were heading for the exit so i couldnt rly ask for their pic so i decided to try n find em later.
then i went to the bn-ha panel but it was full to the BRIM but i made the mistake of sliding into the middle of an empty row for a good seat but the prson sat in front of me had big poofy hair so i couldnt see like half of the characters n ppl filld all the seats to my left n right so i couldnt leave. i was rly bored n trapped so i went on my ipad for almost all of thepanel n read part of a chiana/zu fic n stuff until the girl w the big hair left then i focused a Little more on the panel but i was still bored so wehn i noticed the ppl to my right all leave except the one guy next to me, i left the panel. i was sad bc at the time of that panel, there was a DR murder mystery panel that i couldve tried to attend instead but i was trapped so i couldnt :((
after that i decided to wander around for a bit before idolfest but when i went in at 5 pm, i 4got just how small that room was n how few chairs it had, n there were ppl standing against the walls so i leaned my sign against the right of the double doors BUT I LOOKED AHEAD N THERE WAS!! A HYPM!C PERFORMANCE STARTING TO HAPPEN!! DIVISION RAP ANTHEM WAS STARTING UP N MTR WAS ON THE STAGE!! but there were tall ppl standing in front of me n i was crowded against the back so i raised my ipad way above my head n started recording n watched them thru my ipad util someone opened the right door n i had to scramble tog rab my sign n lean it against me somehow n it made my fildiming falter but!! god i was just so exciting bc i wasnt expecting A HYPM!C PERFOAMNCE!! they did so good too ;w; after that, it was a solo hanayo perfoamnce then 3 songs from a non-anime-specific idol group that did 3 voca songs (one of which was LUVVVORATORY!!) n another non-anime dol group that did kpop songs (they were rly pretty n good) n then a you solo then a you/hane duet! ALSO during the hypm!cperformance, te juto n sama n a gentaro were dancing in front of me n right after the perfoamcne, a BB group opened the door but realized they missed the hypm!c performance n left n i decided to try n find em later too.
after the last performance, there was still time, so a samus came over to me n asked to take a pic of my sign n they said they like ens-tars too n they said they cosplay tsukasa too n they ran a panel as him back in georgia n we talked abt best boys n i showed them all the keychains on my bag n when i pointed at mika n said 2nd best boy they went “:o me too!” n there was a lot more said but we went on talking for a while abt ens-tars n they showed me pics of the tori n arashi cosplayers that day they saw.
after that i just walked around for like 45 minutes until the samus saw me again n waved me over so i was talking w them n they were apparently drinking alcohol despite being 18 n their friend was 23 n we were just talking abt stuff n i noticed a trigger group on the escalator n we called out to them n i took their picture n samus was like “dude it’s so cool that ur into id0lish7 too” n then we kept talking n at one point the samus was like “tsukasa i luv u” n made a lil finger heart n i tried 2 make one but my hands were kinda full but i managed to make one! they also said earlier today, they saw a sasuke cosplayer getting arrested n they took a pic of it for their snapchat lmao n it was them in front of a cop car n they said the person said “dont touch me!!” to the cop. the friend w samus said the only idols he knows were the combie one n that saki was def best girl hands down like, its a fact n i was like “ur right. it not even a hot take, its the Facts.” anyway then i wnted to walka round a bit more so i did n at like. 7:10 i decided “why not go near the photosoot area n registration to see more cosplayers that r there bc ive just been walking repetitive loops around the dealers room entrance n the con floor so! there could b some new cosplayers there! n lo n behold i found a tenn n ryuu that i had seen briefly earlier! n took their pic! then less than a few ftaway, i tried to walk past some ppl but there was a bag in the way so i stepped over it (like, not on it, i mean. like, Over, to avoid it) but i noticed it was an MTC itabag n the person next to it had bunny ears n it!! was the juto n sama i was looking for! so i took their pic n was talking abt how cool it is to see more hypm!c cosplayers here this yr until some guy came up n started telling the samatoki they looked like kaworu n they mistook them for kaworu n they said they didnt kno who i was supposed to b but i looked nice (iirc?) so i left n near the prop check table, I SAW THE BB BOYS! so i ran up to them n asked for a picture n then i started talking abt the hypm!c thing n there being so many this yr when there were none last yr n the jiro was like “aa ur tsukasa” n we started talking abt ES a lil bit n the anime then i complimented their ritsu+mao plushies on their bag n left!
after that i just roamed the halls until 8 pm. then the v0ltron panel! keith n lance hd like, a roasting rivalry going on n keith was like “i keep getting bullied! i dont deserve this!” n i kept askiing questions. me, a green ranger, a dave, n the dave’s friend were mainly the ones asking questions lmao. anyway keithd b like “lance dont touch me oh ew” and i asked keith what his fav anime was since he said he was a weeb n he said blue ex0rcist n i asked keith if hed seen LL (bc LL cosplayers were dancing to the music outside the panel room n i heard it) n lance was like “oh yea, he knows all the dances. he does them in his room” n keith denied it n at one point, i was like “since keith n lance share one braincell, who has it the most” n they said keith. the bonding moment was also mentioned a lot and alluras death n how lance can get much more “game” than keith (like, ladies. sorry im tired they might hav used another term) and an amami in the audience told lance to fortnite dance with him aftr thelance fortnite danced n!! just. a lot happened. it was a very casual-ish panel imo. haha.
after that i 4got that the bn-ha panel was at 10 not 9 so i just decided to wander then hit up the dance floor for most of the duration n i spotted the juto n sama n a nurse ramuda that i remember the samus talking abt n also someone who looked like the arashi the samus showed me but in an ali!ce madeness returns dress o i asked the ramuda for a pic and then started dancing and the juto got into one of the dance circles n just started going hard as HELL n i was just dancing in the area they were near n out of the corner of my eye i’d see juto just absolutely KILLING IT w their dance moves bc they were dancing in front of their friends (occasionally w samatoki or posing w them) n i was just jamming out n during a slow song i pulled up a pic of chiaki on my ipad n started slowdancing w my ipad n the girl near me was like “that’s a Mood” n i think i heard the possibly-arashi n the others laugh a bit bc i was slow-dancing w “chiaki’ haha but god the dance floor was WILD! there was a guy w a saxophone at some point playing along w the music then a guy w a guitar! n we yelled lyrice to dont stop believing n stuff.
the the bn-ha panel! ...i was bored. most of the time i put tape on my leo sign and looked up wigs on ebay n stuff n sometimes i couldnt hear v well bc i sat near the back. they started up like, truth or dare but w a beach ball to decide who got to ask the dare or w/e? but i noticed a gentaro in the back of the room so i was like “ill just wait until the end of the panel then ask for their picture” then trivia started n they eventually asked what episode dabi appeared in n i was thinking “ep 7 of the most recent season” n some guy guessed that (he was the only one who fuessed) but the izuku n katsuki looked at their paper n i heard them mutter “episode 31″ so after somebody guessed ep 42 n the panelists said ‘”guess between 30-42--” i said ep 31 n went up n got a pack of aiw stickers but i shoulve taken the superhero shirt tbh. aftr that i decided to leave n asked the gentaro for a pic n they were one of the ryuus earlier they said n also a jakuarai from yesterday! they were like “oh! ur the tsukasa i keep seeing/running into!” n i was like “oh! hi!”
idk what convo this was in but someone was like “do u like how they did anzu?” n i was like “oh she’s so cute they rly said Fuck Anzu Haters” n they agreed.
