Learning about the Polish situation after the partitions is so funny because you learn that after one of the Uprisings when everything from language to culture got banned in the Prussian part of the Annexation, (it got banned everywhere but let's ignore that for a moment) some Germans started to get interested in that because "why is it banned"?
And I just imagine the situation where poor Gilbert is just sitting in his study or just some office space doing paperwork maybe, and teenager Ludwig just comes in and is like:
Ludwig/Germany "I wanna learn Polish"
Gilbert/Prussia "You what now?"
It's the greatest revenge of Feliks.

Have you guys ever been in a fandom where the majority of its fanfiction was really high-quality? If so, tell me which fandom it is in the tags. For me it's the Witcher.

I'm taking that as a challenge. As a polish person we'll see if I die.
i swear if you took a shot every time italy mentions girls in canon, you would die from alcohol poisoning in mere minutes. it is excessive 😭 but kind of adorable actually. he just wants that Female Validation.

Human names for HWS Norway
I’ve seen several posts about human names for the nations going around lately and I wanted to offer my own opinion on Norway’s name, as a Norwegian person. This is not meant as critique of other people’s headcanons, it’s just my personal opinion and meant to offer some insight into the cultural and historical background of certain Norwegian names. I’ve made several posts about this topic, but I realize that it’s been years since last time and I think it’s about time to make a new one.
First; some background on naming traditions in Norway. In Norway surnames especially are very diverse and carries a lot of history and meaning behind them as they often are names of farmsteads or places where the families lived in the 1920s. This is when it became mandatory to inherit surnames from your parents. Before this, people often changed names when they migrated and took the name of the place they moved to, as a sort of “nickname” when people needed to distinguish you from other people with the same name. “Oh yes, that’s XXXX from this farm, not XXXX from that farm” etc. The patronyms had a similar function to this and prior to 1920 everyone was named in official documents in this fashion: “First name, Name of father -daughter/-son, Name of place/farmstead”. This explains the origin of the modern surnames ending with “-sen”, where “sen” means “son”. These surnames were inherited by people who did not have a connection to a farm or a place, perhaps because they lived in the cities and were working class.
Next; a critique on the more widely used name in the fandom: Lukas Bondevik. Neither of these names are good picks for Norway in my opinion. Starting with the surname; Bondevik. As its own name, it is fine, it means “farmer’s bay”. The problem with it is due to its close association with a conservative politician who at one point was prime minister in Norway. The Bondevik-government is not uncommon to talk about and when I just google the name “Bondevik”, every single result on the first page is of this politician. Again, because Norwegian surnames are so personal and geographically locked, you end up giving Norway a history relating to this specific family. There are only 201 people in Norway with this surname, most of them are related to each other, and the name will be associated with this conservative politician. It would be similar to England being named Arthur Thatcher or Arthur Churchill, or America being named Alfred F. Kennedy or Alfred F. Reagan. There is no avoiding this.
Continuing with the critique on Lukas. There is no way around this name as it has been the go-to choice for the fandom for several years now, picked out of a list of names Hima suggested. Personally I do not think this name fits Norway as a character due to both cultural and historical Norwegian associations. Lukas is not a name that was used in Norway before the 1990s and it did not become a popular name until 2008. Lukas is not a name with Norse origin, its origins are biblical, and is a new trendy name that has entered the Norwegian society with the globalisation and Americanisation of our media. It is a very young name and you will not find people over 35 with this name still today. If you talk about hws Norway where he exists before 1990, he would not have this name. It is both culturally and historically inaccurate. It is also, in my opinion, a bit of a fuck-boy name – it gives modern, upper-class or city boy vibes. Not a name that I think fits hws Norway.
Lastly; my own suggestions of names for Norway. I will never stop advocating for Sigurd as the best name for Norway. It is a name of Norse origin and has been relatively popular through all time periods, never going out of fashion, a solid Norwegian name. Because of its history you can find this name in any social class (though perhaps not upper-class today?), and it does not betray any age nor will it ever become outdated. Its meaning is “victory” and “guardian”. I must admit it does not sound very good when pronounced in English, but it is a very pretty name in Norwegian (the "d" is silent). The name has a long history, but is not closely associated with one specific person. There is a famous myth/story with origins to before the Viking Age about “Sigurd Fåvnesbane, the dragon slayer”, and I like the parallel between hws Norway and this myth, and hws England and the story of King Arthur. Sigurd is a good Norwegian name and its connotations fits the character of Norway very well.
My suggestions of surnames for Norway are Nordvik and Ødegård. I still cannot choose between these two as I love them both. Nordvik means “northern bay” and it is such a generic surname you can find it everywhere in Norway where there’s water. I like it because it ties in with the original meaning of the name “Norway”, the way to the north, and associates with the sea, which has been of huge importance to Norway through history. Ødegård means “desolate farm” and only became used as a surname/nickname after the Black Plague, which saw many farms abandoned. Ødegård was the name these farms got and people who moved there took it as a surname in the process previously explained. I like this name because it is not tied to any specific region either, so the geographical origin becomes more intangible and creates an air of mystery.
This is my personal take on the names for hws Norway, and again; is not meant to be a critique against anyone using the popular fandom names. I know habits are hard to change and at this point is probably very integrated when talking about the character. Anyone is free to use any name they want of course, I am just offering some cultural and historical background and insight on them as “Norwegian names”. If anyone has other name suggestions for Norway they are unsure about or wish to know more about, I’ll gladly make an input if Norwegian advise is wanted.

a small compilation of some nationverse lore headcanons i love!! for inspo :)
⤿ physical
a nation's physical strength is equal to the combination of their current military & political power and it fluctuates a lot — e.g., habsburg austria was a lot stronger than he looked and could beat most nations in one-on-one scuffles, but that's no longer true (i'm obsessed with the implications of one nation being able to physically overpower another, and later their distress when they realise they're no longer able to)
nations heal faster and are in 'conservation mode' during times of war. their bodies become accustomed to the constant healing process and can do it faster, while their more human needs for basic things like food, water, and rest are minimised
their pain tolerance is impressive too!
they experience physical symptoms when they get new nations as rulers e.g., when finland was given to the russian empire, that came with headaches and dizziness for finland over the sudden adjustment
when nations lose a lot of their territory at once it itches like a phantom limb for some time
⤿ psychological & more
the nations are selfish by nature!! it doesn't matter how much they love or care for someone on a personal level, they are innately incapable of not choosing their own best interests, and those decisions are easy for them even when they're at the expense of loved ones (they can still feel guilty, but they don't regret it)
gender generally doesn't matter that much, similar to how some ancient societies were alright with female deities having 'masculine' traits (artemis the archer, athena the strategist, etc.) nation women aren't held to (most) of the same standards as human women and it's fine for most of them to be involved in war, politics & battle strategy
at the same time, nations who aren't close don't see each other as their "human form" (which includes discussions of gender) — e.g., most nations wouldn't go easy on hungary just "because she's a woman" since they see her as a nation-creature-whatever-thing first, as hungary first, and as a person, erzsébet, second or not at all. they're very aware of their own non-human nature, and their perception of other nations as individuals only comes when they get to know them well
^ for that same reason, most nations don't refer to each other by their human names. it's a sign of closeness when they do (and they feel awkward when they have to use someone's human name for bureaucratic reasons, which has become more commonplace in modern times)
but also, younger nations are often less strict about human names, and use them more often than older nations
i feel like we overestimate how much information they can retain! often their memories of older times are vague, with some clear, standout moments. they argue with each other over who remembers certain things more correctly ("i definitely kicked your ass in battle in the 1420s" "no you didn't! that was me!")
nation children are also children mentally, so in modern times the laws around nation representatives require that they have some kind of legal guardian (often a nation they have a familial relationship with)

One of the appeals to Hetalia to me is...how many stories you can tell through it, if that makes sense? Like, you can explore history and culture through stories and characters, and each and svery character can be so complex and there are so many ways to characterise them, y'know? I think that's awesome. And also I love making OCs and aeeing what OCs other people make.

I think iceland would generally have a very black/white thinking of the people around him. Because of his childhood isolation and childhood traumas, he tries to sort people into "good" or "bad", so he always struggles around those he had a complicated relation to
I feel this would be more obvious during heightened tensions between iceland and Denmark, when iceland was in his more independent rebellious teenage age, and for a while categorized Denmark as "bad" despite Denmark never really doing anything specifically against him, as Denmark would be the one trying to find solutions for them both that would work (as he wouldn't think ice was ready to be fully independent just yet)
Same goes for America, he very frequently goes back and forth on his opinion, unable to settle for a nuanced middle, he always feels the need to either see him as good or as bad
He more frequently than not categorizes him as bad than good, it's only when America does something specifically good for him that he views him as good, especially with their very complicated relation to one another during the cold war.
Especially with his struggles with isolation and abandonment, when he's frustrated with people he wants to be alone but he so desperately doesn't want to feel entirely alone again that he always comes back to people, so when others around him don't support or give him what he needs. He runs to the next best option (I.e. 2008 crisis when he resorted to Russia after unsuccessfully trying to get financial aid from western countries)

APH South Italy/Romano Headcanons 🇮🇹
(SFW, Spamano/RomaSpa centric)
He wears a lot of jewelry, but it's classy never flashy. Several rings, one of which is engraved with an 'A' for Antonio. Usually wearing at least a solid gold chain and a crucifix.
He's very Catholic, in a uniquely Italian way (iykyk i cannot elaborate)
He smokes like a chimney, high quality cigars and cheap cigarettes. If you ask him to put it out he will blow it right at you. This is on top of heavy cologne (Versace Eros) so you can smell him from a mile away.
Certified Short King™, maybe around 5'7? I can see him with almost any sort of physique, that being said I don't think he's a twink, he at least has some wiry strength. He's lean but solidly built, maybe even has some pudge esp as he ages?
He's very warm toned. His skin is a light olive, not pale yet not quite bronze. He tans well but isn't tan all year round. Honestly he probably uses tanning beds during winter lmao
He's got a fair amount of body hair and often leaves his shirts unbuttoned to display this, intentionally or not. He's a sharp dresser when out in public, but at home he sits around in sweat stained tanks and boxers.
He loves his red wine, and apertifs. Grappa or Sambuca for something a stronger. Doesn't mind the taste of hard liquor at all. Definitely holds his alcohol better than his brother or Antonio.
Loves sailing and yachting, leisure sports. Has a bit of a gambling habit. Not to a destructive point, just in good fun.
When he's in a good mood he hums to himself and you might even catch him singing if he thinks he's alone.
Dances to Dean Martin in the kitchen with Antonio. He actually likes cooking together. Normally he'd be the type of person to hate others in his space while doing something, but Toni is an equally talented chef so he allows it.
Makes a big pot of sauce and polpette on Sundays. Italians will know. Eats wayyyy too much meat than is healthy. You can pry his salumi out of his cold dead hands.
He's sensitive and not always rational - the type to make mountains out of molehills and deflect real issues with humour. Explosive temper. Born to argue. Quick to throw insults (and hands). Just as quick to forgive and forget. If he holds a grudge you really fucked up.
If he likes you, he'll tease you and call you names. If he doesn't, he won't bother to talk to you much. He likes to fuck with people to an extent but has little patience for unnecessary conversation.
He can be extremely condescending; and to Tonio exclusively, extremely sweet. He's a smooth talker and romantic when he feels like it, laying on the pet names and sweet nothings, especially when he wants something in return.
He's honest and loyal, but generally a very private person. It's difficult to earn his trust and get on his good side but once you have it you're one of the lucky few. He's hospitable and generous and often does that for show. Loves to give meaningful and lavish gifts. If he cares about someone not only will they be spoiled in a material sense, but he'll do favors for them to make their life easier.
(note: this might be controversial re; accuracy but i don't actually have beef with his canon human name. 'lovino isn't a real name' well yes and no. it's not common or representative. but there's so much variety in italian naming that it certainly could be a first name. according to forebears there are 259 ppl named lovino on record but only 9 are in italy lol. or u could just call him ~romano~ which is a more popular human first name. i kinda like lovino, its unique.)
