People w/o depression act like hygiene and self care is what will make you feel better. Its infuriating in the sense that it's typically not true. Sometimes it's quite the opposite. The thing with depression is that doing what you should is not the same as doing what you need.
You should shower, eat, and all that. But maybe what you need is to temporarily ignore one of those things and refocus the energy you do have into an activity or something.
It seems counterintuitive, after all, all those needs typically do improve motivation and energy but depression isn't necessarily an intuitive illness. Depression isn't rational. Thus most people can't manage it with things that normally rationally be correct.
Sometimes, ignoring your shoulds temporarily in favor of focusing on an activity that will give you a bit of accomplishment is the right thing for yourself and don't let anyone shame you for doing something momentarily bad that will give you a giant payoff.
Being functional and depressed is an upwards battle. Especially when you take care of yourself. People assume you're fine but you're not. You're putting everything into being presentable and rotting away when you're alone, but I find what often helps me claw out of a hole and allow me to do all the things is not focusing onwhat I should be doing but on what is gonna give me a safe momentary mood boost that's gonna help me accomplish all of what I should and need to do.
Its also worth noting that for some people this sentiment is reversed. Maybe you game all day but what is gonna help is cooking a meal or going outside.
I just want people to stop pretending its "fixable" with normal coping skills tbh.
#take this with a bit of nuance#obviously don't do harm#just acknowledge that a search for some footing isn't a moral failing#do things out of order if its gonna benefit you#even if it means temporarily neglecting something that you ideally would be doing#like maybe you dont brush your hair#or pick out a new pair of socks and wear your old ones cause it just happens to be easier today#relatively harmless things yknow#do make it a goal to brush your teeth and be kind tho#<- anything worth doing is worth doing it half assed and bad

I'm sorry you're having a bad time! I hope you feel better soon! 1. What's your Hogwarts house? 2. Favorite Ron scene 3. Attribute/characteristic/scene of Ron that isn't talked about much Aaaand what kinda recs are you in the mood for?
Hufflepuff (oddly enough). While I am very loyal, hard-working, and dedicated those traits are determined through selfish motivations. And while I am a strong believer in common courtesy and treating others how you would want to be treated, I also don’ t think I am a kind or charitable person. I’m very morally grey. So it's with a humorous irony that I acknowledge that while I do adhere to all the Hufflepuff traits, it's in a very Slytherine manner. Lol.
Favorite Ron scene. It’s more of the little one liners that I adore more than anything. Ron helping Harry get his pants on. Ron putting food on Harry’s plate. Ron chastising Hermione for not taking care of herself enough.
The throwaway lines that are literally dripping from every book.
But if I had to pick one it would be Ron pushing Harry out of the way of Sirius the Dog because it showed his quick thinking and his selflessness in one breath.
And... I think I partially answered that one up above, lol. I also love the short paragraph in Philosopher’s stone when Harry and Ron are exploring the castle in search of class and they accidentally stumble over a doxen odd things like doors that lead to nowhere and odd windows and other random bits. Just two boys new to the school getting excited with each other over the oddities of Hogwarts.
Attributes: Honestly Ron’s humor.
Like, everyone knows about it, but it's very rarely touched on how often he makes funny voices or impersonates people or is generally the life of the room he’s in.
In fanfictions we tend to go for the angst as a form of compensating for all the hate delivered Ron’s way. We focus on his talents and on his scars, on his abilities. We make a point to showcase how much of a badass Ron can be because it’s not seen in most of the fandom.
Ron’s humor though? It’s so prevalent in each book in all those small moments that can’t quite be directly quoted because it’s so connected with the context of the scene that without the scene no one gets it.
Not only that but humor is hard.
It’s hard to be funny and witty and to put that on a page without it looking too forced, too scripted. I know from experience because (while it doesn’t remotely seem like it) I try to put a bit of Ron’s humor into every scene I write. And I fail more often than not. I have a document open with a bunch of Ron’s little moments where he says something funny and I always feel like I’m not accomplishing it, or the angst is too heavy and it doesn’t feel right but then...
When I write a light scene I find that it feels unnecessary to the plot. I feel like I’m literally adding it just so that I can have Ron be funny here and I HATE writing unneeded scenes because I’m already long winded enough without putting extra bits in there.
So yes, Ron’s humor, being just the great person he is, is an attribute I feel isn’t very touched upon in fanfiction.
And as for recs... I just really want some goodness right now. Like... Spiderman hanging with the Avengers kind of fluff. People just being protective of Ron type stories... watching his back, being considerate. If you know any stories like that I’d love a sip of that tea right now.
And thanks... it's been.... just a really horrible month. All you can do is put one foot in front of the other, right? Eventual the ice and rock will smooth out into a regular path again.
