Happy birthday Percy!!!

Percy was woken up as usual by the low noises of people driving their cars to their boring office jobs; just another busy day in New York City, “where nobody ever stops working!” That what it said in the postcard (and it really did seemed like that during the busy mornings!) Percy had gotten from his biological father (the only time he had any type of contact) at 3. Now at the much wiser age of 6, he questioned why the man would have chosen such a boring postcard instead of the usual birthday card (his ma’s candy store sold much more beautiful cards and it wasn’t even a card shop!). Maybe he wanted to make sure Percy knew that he knew where he lived? Still a bizarre choice for the only thing resembling a birthday gift that the boy had ever received from him. but whatever…

After returning from his musings into the real world, and becoming aware of his surroundings again, Percy realized that there was in fact another, and much nicer at that, sound apart from the buzzing streets. His mother’s voice. More specifically, his mother’s voice singing (more like humming) along to the radio. It was a Monday morning and his ma wasn’t at her usual morning shift at the store! Percy immediately jumped out of bed and into the kitchen, curiosity burning in his chest. He found his mother in her usual weekend pose, eyes focus on the stove and hips moving to the rhythm of the music. Her mother could have been the next Shakira, Percy thought, she had the voice, the moves and the looks!

Her mother must have heard his loud steps in the hallway as she immediately turn around, open her arms wide in greeting, ready for the boy, who quickly jumped to envelop her in a hug: “Good morning! Is my little boy excited for today?”, his mother asked.

“Today? What’s going on today?” Percy had never felt more confused in his short life.

“Oooh… Don’t tell me someone forgot what today is?”, his ma said while trying to hide a smile.

“Forgot what? What is today?” Scratch what he said before. Percy had never felt more confused now than ever before in his life.

Today was Monday, that Percy knew as he had classes in the evening. But the day exactly? Well… they were learning the days of the year already in preschool, but, honestly? Percy was still getting the hang of it. The teacher wanted them to read the calendar a few times and just have it all up in their heads?! Honestly, the gall of that woman! (or at least that was the phrase his mother said when she didn’t agree with her boss). Those were too words and numbers, with so few pictures! It was practically impossible!

“Someone got so excited yesterday, it was a tough feat to put him to sleep, and now he’s forgotten his own birthday”, his ma finally let her smile stand up and proud.

OMG right! His birthday! How could Percy forget his own birthday! With the busyness of the morning and the surprise of his mother being here, he had forgot to think about the reason behind her being here. Wait! If his mother was up cooking breakfast for his birthday that meant he was getting…!

“Someone order a serving of blue blueberry pancakes with maple syrup, sadly not blue but what can we do, and a blue candle on top? With a side of blue jellybeans? Sarah, my coworker was nice enough to give them to me on Friday, knowing I wouldn’t be going this morning. Hmmm… It was a miracle you didn’t find them during the weekend! Bueno, a cantar cumpleaños feliz y luego a comer se ha dicho!!”, his ma handed him a plate filled to the brink with pancakes (four to be exact; such an enormous amount!) an a lightened candle.

They sang happy birthday and ate a delicious plate of blue pancakes each. It was a wonderful birthday. Percy hoped all the rest to come would be as wonderful.

(As an older child, Percy would come and think about to these memories with pity and anger, as his birthdays had never been the same after Smelly Gabe appeared. His mother had tried, but there was no more work-free mornings and blueberry pancakes, but instead quiet birthday celebrations with some candy if Gabe was away at one of his buddies’ houses, gambling away his ma’s hard earned money. Later on, as a teen, Percy would look back with a sad smile, thinking of how happy and easy those innocent childhood days had been. Now, finally, as a tired young adult, Percy is happy to be back with his mother, and the additions of Paul and Estelle, every birthday morning to celebrate with wonderful blueberry pancakes and then hanging out with his friends in the evening. What more could someone ask for? Nothing. Nothing At All.)

honestly this is a super interesting question...but one that I probably don't have a great answer for? it's not something I've really thought about before! :o

let me think...we know that sam has some knowledge of spanish (source: 5x05 fallen idols) and latin (no single definitive source for this but he often is able to translate latin words or phrases on the fly), as well as sign language (we see him use it with eileen multiple times). he also knows at least un petit peu de français (source: 13x12 various & sundry villains) although to be fair that was only a couple words that he could've easily picked up just from existing in the world.

in my opinion, the languages he's actually studied in some capacity are spanish, latin, and asl, although I don't think he's anywhere near fluent in any of them. they're all very practical choices, of course. buuuuut...I also really really love the headcanon that he learned (had to learn) enochian while he was in the cage. I don't remember if there's any canon evidence for this, but even if there isn't, it's just so juicy that it has been cemented in my brain.

dean, on the other hand...I honestly doubt he's actually studied any foreign languages at length. a good percentage of american high schools have a language requirement, but we also know that dean has a GED (and a give 'em hell attitude), so it's possible he could've skirted around that entirely. actually though I do think he's taken at least a year of spanish, enough to learn how to pronounce things, because when he speaks latin it comes out sounding like spanish instead (thank you jensen, it makes me laugh every time). other than that, though, I think he mostly just picks up the odd word or two from books or tv or movies (I have to imagine that at some point, like many routine hentai watchers, he just absorbed the meaning of words like itai and iku). it's pretty much impossible for him not to have learned some latin over the years as well but I don't think he ever sat himself down and was like okay I'm gonna learn latin.

also, when the two of them randomly run across foreign phrases, I think usually dean will look to sam to translate or sam will just offer up his knowledge without really being prompted. it happens more in late seasons iirc and could be related to the way they dumbed dean way down toward the end of the show but I do also like the headcanon that dean never really bothered to learn other languages because "that's sammy's thing and he's good at it." he's the designated research boy after all, not dean.

damn, now you've really got me thinking about this too!!! it's a super interesting topic to consider, honestly. it's very possible that sam's got some knowledge of more languages than the ones I pointed out and he just never got the chance to use them, and it's possible that dean knows more than he lets on and just likes when sam shows off (I honestly think that that's why he plays dumb sometimes). I don't think even the writers know whether any of that is true. I don't know if kripke knows, lol. it's a lot of fun to speculate on though!!!

Hadley from Charm School not speaking English as her mother tongue. She's played by Teresa, so she comes from a Latin American country. She is Latina, like Isla coming from Japan.

I just consider Mariposa Spain and they speak Spanish. Shimmervale, on the other hand, I view as Malta. Fairytopia, Portugal so they speak Portuguese. Island Princess, they speak Italian etc, Meribella is Monaco so French.

And Kira apparently is Vietnamese, Nia from Western Fun was Native American, and Miko was Native Hawaiian, as I saw an ask about why we didn't get other races.

Now an explanation that is needed: Fairy Secret. Why is Taylor British and why is Zane Italian, and in Mermaid Tale why does the lipstick fish have a Hungarian accent? She talks like Zsa Zsa Gabor??? What? And yes why isn't Summer Aussie, as well as why did Blaine never appear in a movie when Barbie wasn;t dating Ken, and why didn't Christie, Lea, and Kayla appaear? I mean Kira only had 2 dolls in the 2000s before being completely cut, so her I get.

Sat on this for awhile trying to decide if I wanted to be nice answering, and I decided that I do not want to be nice. I haven't talked about Barbie in months, really, so I have no idea what posts you're referring to. There are literally over 7,700 posts in my Barbie tag from the past 10 years so speaking vaguely about something not recent is of no help to me. But whatever, I'm going to deal with this and then turn off my ask again.

A couple things here:

I don't really account for who "plays" the characters in the movies in my headcanons, because I have everyone existing alongside Barbie herself, so it doesn't matter. My most recent headcanon for Hadley had her coming from Johanistan (although that would most likely mean English is still not her first language).

Isla does not come from Japan. Nowhere in the movie is it said that she comes from Japan (her kingdom is never mentioned, in fact). That is your headcanon, it's not canon, and therefore has no bearing on anything.

First of all, assuming I found the right post, you completely missed the fucking point of what I was saying. Fairytopia (which encompasses Flutterfield and Shimmervale, they are not separate, they are pieces of a whole) DOES NOT HAVE SPAIN. THEREFORE THEY CAN'T SPEAK SPANISH. That was the point I was making! Are you kidding me here? The point of that post was speculating what you might call a language analogous to Spanish, without Spain existing. Since it's spoken in Flutterfield, the language could be called Flutter, and therefore Marabella and Carlos have Flutter accents. Something like that. That was my point.

Secondly, Island Princess and Popstar have nothing at all to do with Fairytopia or, again, what I was saying. Irrelevant.

Let's break this down.

So, you have no problem saying that Flutterfield is Spain, even tho Fairytopia is not Earth and has no known contact with Earth at all... but somehow the characters of Gloss Angeles, whose MAIN PLOT is about their connection with Earth, confuses you? What? WHAT? Why can't Taylor be British? Why can't Zane be Italian? What are you TALKING about?

Never really cared about what accent the lipstick fish had, but again, Mermaid Tale takes place on Earth. She could pick it up. Or it's some kind of fish accent. Who even cares?

The only animated depiction of Summer thus far has been Life in the Dreamhouse, and since Blaine didn't exist there, they might have retconned the fact that she's supposed to be Australian. Or maybe they forgot.

Barbie didn't date Blaine in the movies bc she stopped dating, period. There hasn't been a romantic arc in a Barbie movie since 2015 (longer since there's been a good one), and before Epic Road Trip, Barbie as herself's last romance... was Ken in Fairy Secret. And then she was a teenager and nobody was allowed to date for whatever reason. There was no reason for Blaine to be there lmfao. Also who even cares about Blaine? He sucks.

Christie, Lea, and Kayla have been dead for years so of course they're not going to appear in anything?? It was a miracle to see Christie in animated form in 2015 when she had already been dead for 10 full years at that point, but she was super whitewashed so like they couldn't even do that right lmfao.

I'm extremly aware that Xtale MewMew has a different origin than canon Mew Mew due to her simply being from another universe BUT i don't see the need to make her nonbinary while still keeping her as ''mew mew'', if that makes sense.

The deal and ultimate problem with this portray is not whetever or not are fans allowed to add unique interpretations to previously established characters, but simply because it doesn't make sense?? Look, i am personally extremly open to fan portrayals and unique headcanons (hell, i'm literally a fan of ink sans, how could i not?)

For example, i actually don't have that much of a problem with X!tale Chara and Frisk being both cis males all that much, since i understand how Jakei made that decision (They were both often portrayed as being female in the early state of the undertale latin american community, and she wanted to flip that portrayal a bit) and that she still keeped canon Frisk and Chara as nonbinary (use the lattest xtale pride drawing for example)

Although, i think it's plain nonsense to make mew mew nonbinary when her whole character arc is about her transitioning from (guess what?) nonbinary to female. The literal reason to why she's ''mew mew'' and not ''mad dummy'' is because of her quest to find a proper body/vessel where she can inhabite while feeling like 'herself'. Her having a human-like body with a cat tall and frilly tutu and whatever is not just a funky design trait of hers, but the whole result of her being trans female in the first place. Actually, when you think about it, Xtale Mew Mew being nonbinary just makes her cisgender honestly (technically)

with maiaphael and religion i definitely think they both have a relationship where they both have a feeling of guilt regarding it mixed with a sense of comfort. i can't really speak on catholicism that much but as a black american especially raised around nyc i can definitely imagine how maia's relationship is. like she most definitely was raised in a semi religious household where it was likely that she had to attend church every sunday aka spending your entire day at church bc (1/?)

the pastor never knew when to stop preaching making you wish you were home because the sound of stomping and people singing becomes too much after the 3rd hour😭. but maia definitely has a weird relationship with church because of the rampant queerphobia/transphobia that's present in black church spaces. but i think that as maia grew older her parents slowly stopped making going to church weekly a requirement and even though she doesn't go as often now there's still some fond moments of probably hanging out with the other kids at sunday brunches or the few out queer people who were always kind to her there. so in regards to helping out at churches with raphael i think it's likely after maia processes the trauma that church brought her and once she does reach a certain place where she can go back w/o heavily feeling the impact of what she endured during childhood she definitely goes to help raphael with volunteering and at the same time the both of them find comfort in being able to talk to someone else who had a similar traumatic experience that fills them with guilt long afterwards. like yea their religion had a negative impact but at the same time there's this sense of comfort that it brings them as it was a place of community. (a little side note, maia most DEFINITELY listen to gospel music. church may have been prolonged but the music hit different!!) over time maiaphael probably helps to provide a safety network to those closeted b/c they both know how it feels to be rejected from a place that preaches community. she's simply immortal hence why she's able to do all these things because why not and plus there's the polycule😌. but yea here was one of my rambles about maiaphael that's not even fully complete (with an additional projection cause attending church for 5+ hours was a nightmare as a child😭)(5/5)- maiaphael anon😎

thank you so much for your headcanons!! i agree completely. i also feel like that relationship is very similar to the relationship many latinos have with religion/church. obviously i can't speak for them all, much less latino immigrants in the US, but yes. to many latinos church is one of the only places where they feel safe and build a sense of community. church is where people help each other, where many celebrations are held, where people feel listened to, etc. and it can feel a bit suffocating at times because if you leave church, you are alone, and shunned, and there's of course the whole relationship with colonialism. churches in latin america have been spaces of both resistance (as traditional and afro religions were mixed with catholicism and it was a place where people got to mutually aid and also where a lot of progressive movements were formed) and oppression (as many people are still forced to stay there if they want to keep getting help, food, and other supplies, not to mention a general sense of community). so it's a very complicated relationship, mixing in fond memories, family, feelings of guilt, fear, being smothered, loneliness and compassion. and it's particularly complicated when you're queer

also, yes, church was endless dudndi god. but ngl, i do love gospel music, esp black us-american gospel music, and i can definitely see maia being into that! especially considering how many black and latino singers start out at church choir and find their love and opportunities to do music there

anyway! my point is that i feel this deeply (and thanks for sharing something so personal with me too) and i feel like it's slightly different because raphael didn't fully get to process his trauma, as he was never away from church except from when he was too busy handling other, worse traumas. and then church became something of a safe haven that brought him comfort in regards to those traumas (while simultaneously bringing in guilt and making him feel like a monster), so, yeah. complicated

i have the headcanon that rosa ended up turning away from church, so maybe he got to deal with some of the trauma through that and defending her against their mom, who meant well, but thought that rosa turning away from catholicism meant abandoning their family/community/culture. i can only imagine how much harder that hits when you're an immigrant, too

but maybe the first time raphael actually got to talk about his trauma was when maia brought it up. and she was like "you know, i haven't been able to get into a church ever since i ran away from home". and raphael turns to her and admits, very quietly, that he can understand that. and he admits to some parts of his issues with religion that he hadn't confessed to anyone (felt too guilty to), not even magnus (especially since magnus had already helped him find his way back to his religion at some personal cost to himself, so how could raphael complain about that to him?)

it just feels good that maia understands and maia is also very happy that raphael gets it because there's always that fear that she will be rejected and shunned for speaking up about how she felt regarding church, especially to someone who still attends it. but raphael understands and welcomes her and relates to her, and she realizes that she hadn't really gotten to talk about that with anyone, either (luke was raised a shadowhunter so he doesn't really get it, jordan obviously didn't care, the rest of the pack or the polycule can't relate as the only one who was raised mundane is jewish)

and for the first time she talks about her trauma without feeling the need to explain or hide anything and she ends up crying in his arms, and raphael holds her and cries a bit, too, but mostly he just comforts her and listens to her and tells her he's so sorry

and slowly she starts to process it and while she won't turn back to christianity she manages to go help with the soup kitchen because it's an opportunity to help other people, and with raphael there, she feels safe :')

There’s definitely some parts of his character that were influenced by Fidel Castro like for example the fact that he’s obsessed with ice cream has to do with a off hand comment hima was making about Fidel Castro obsession with the dairy industry and how weird it was , etc etc

Though in all honesty I don’t see it much It’s really in uniform and maybe the fact that he’s got a beard only , because like .. well fidel Castro is a a pale white Cuban man and Cubas design is seen wearing dreadlocks and usually dark skinned or at the very least tanned in some depictions .. they are pretty different and I think that’s a good thing like nations are best portrayed as like nations in their own right and not their controversial leaders in my opinion, like I wouldn’t want Russias design to be based on Putin for example

Like for his age it’s definitely a odd choice which is why I find it so interesting I think it gives way for many cool headcanons but I definitely think to portray him as a adult was wise I mean, neighboring countries that are younger in age according to history like America are being shown as adults so honestly I think it was a good choice .

Since I don't get asks I'm just gonna offer my opinion out there lol 

 Do you consider the 2Ps to be insane or no? 

Oh yes definitely. I know some fans are against the idea of insane 2P characters but I've been on board with it since I've first discovered it. When it comes to 2P!, I don't think these Hetalia characters exist in the same world/dimension. That's why when fans ask "oh what does 1P!America think of 2P!America," I don't even think exist in the same verse. 

 Opinions on HRE? 

I was never into chibitalia and HRE but one things certain, I truthfully believe Germany is HRE. 

What do you consider a big no-no in the fandom? 

France is a r*pist and Spain is a p*do really bothered me. Fans don't realize how hard it is for France to be such a passionate, loving nation only to live for so long without having an s/o to grow old with. Spain loves children I believe so I feel he'd be so disheartend to hear fans think of him that way.

Thoughts on Seychelles? 

I'll say this, Seychelles was a way for Hima to embody Hetalia fangirls and in the end she was crucified by the same fans who felt she was a threat to their ships. Think about it, Seychelles is cheerful, and shy which I know very well many fangirls act the same way. She was even the main character of Gauken Hetalia which was Hima's way to put us in her place, like we were part of the hetaliaverse. Maybe this is a western fans perspective but the way she was treated was horrible. She deserves so much better...

Thoughts on any of the Hetalia girls? 

They obviously don't get enough screen time and if there was a movie about them, I would support it. But let's be honest, Hetalia is fan service and Hima isn’t obligated to showcase diversity compared to western creators. I really like Taiwan and Seychelles because I think they're like me! 

Do you think the Nyos are offensive? 

I would be perfectly fine with the Nyos if it wasn't for their skimpy clothes. As soldiers, I thought it'd be cool to see them in proper uniforms but they weren't :( But like I said, fanservice, you've got to cater to the crowd.

Thoughts on controversial ships? (i.e: UsUk, Spamano, Itacest, etc.) 

I've never been a shipper tbh because I'm more of a historical hetalia fan. I've never liked USUK or Spamano because I feel these characters grew up like brothers. Especially Spamano, I don't feel right thinking Spain sees Romano in a romantic way after taking care of him as a young boy. Itacest, Germancest, and AmeCan is a big no no for me. It makes me uncomfortable tbh. 

Do you think the fandom is toxic? 

Every fandom is toxic but Hetalia got so bad at one point and now I think it won't go back to that unless there is a huge revival (ex. new season/movie). Idk if I'm a new side of the fandom but I really like the historical hetalia side because they are all educated, exciting and go past the two-dimensional character personalities.

What do you think makes a "bad ship"? 

I can't really imagine a bad ship because if you love two characters seperately and think they will get along, it's up to you. Like Prussia and South Korea? I would never imagine an interaction between the two but I think they would be fun together.

Ugh, this was such an issue in the fandom and I agree, it's horrible. I honestly don't understand why they would do that in the first place because Hetalia disregards the connection between Germany and the nazi government.

I think depictions of war are okay but it's a big no no to do recent events or Germany or Prussia in concentration camps.

Thoughts on cosplayers cosplaying as a character of a different nationality/race? 

As long as their not doing blackface, or yellowface it should be fine in my opinion. I don't really care about cosplay. 

How do you feel about younger people in the fandom? 

I joined the fandom when I was like 12? My advice is always be weary about who you interact with in the fandom. Some fans may not realize what they spout... 

Do you think certain ships are canon/will become canon? 

No not at all, I think Hima is good at teasing tho. I think everyone agrees GerIta is mostly canon but Hima won't outright admit it. Example would be Buon San Valentino because he dropped so many hints but it wasn't "exactly" a canon relationship. It'll stay that way unless two countries unite together like AusHun. 

Do you think Hetalia is taken too seriously? 

When people talk about how it's propoganda and racist (pfft) definitely yes. People tend to forget this show is based off of Japanese stereotypes and not every show is westernized. If it was really racist, each character would be horribly called out on a past event or their physcial appearances are exaggerated. Their flaws are something we point out and laugh about because, yes, Americans really are too loud and friendly. See? Harmless.

I can't think of an example of this but I always strictly follow canon.

Oh yes definitely! But they have to be picky-choosy with which era they choose to be open about it. You cannot tell me Spain was openly gay for most of the middle ages under the Catholic church. In modern time, it's no big deal so I see them willingly going out and flirting or crushing on all genders. Then, I also see Prussia (who is former Teutonic Knight) who had a promise with God about virginity. I think his mindset and values are the same so he rarely gets involved with anyone. It happens every century or so? 

Do you think Hetalia sugar coats/numbs actual historical events?

If Hetalia didn't sugar coat historical events, it wouldn't be a cutesy anime. They have to sugarcoat as to not offend anyone and because the nature of the show is purely comedy. There have been numb moments in the show like all of Davie but that's to show a deeper perspective that nations face as immortals.

How do you feel about Mafia AUs? 

I used to really like them, but realized it's the same thing as cartels and gangs. If someone did a cartel AU for all the latin countries I would raise hell, so I imagine Italian fans feeling the same way. Idk I'm still deciding on it...

Being a historical hetalia fan I actually really like it. Of course if it's done in a respectful manner. I like hearing about fighter pilot America and sniper Russia. I like to hear France and England having to team up despite not liking eachother and how devastated England was when France fell to Germany. Why do you think the SW fandom is so knee-deep in SJ Calvinism? Because I understand wanting representation or being upset because a movie didn’t fulfill your expectations, but the “if you don’t ship X you’re racist” “if you don’t stan Y you’re bigoted” and the harassment over a disappointing movie is surprising just because of how pervasive it is. I was trying to find some St*rmpilot blogs to follow and the amount of hate is Yikes, especially the hate for Rose and the stans of a Certain Ship

eeeeeeh I think it’s because ep. 7 came out at the height of the... well, reaping the seeds the social justice calvinism had sown since 2014 so to speak? I mean, SW is hardly the one fandom where it happened (*cough* voltron and SU *cough*) but as SW is way broader in audience than those other shows that certainly didn’t help, but like, if you think on it, since 2013-ish (but I think before as well, I mean, I’ve been here since 2011 and already when I got here I felt like something was going very wrong when it came to politics-in-fandom-attitude), basically people on tumblr have progressively, when it came to fandoms:

pushed the idea that you have to over-analyze everything you consume through political lens;

pushed the idea that what you like and how you like it also has to be pushed through political lens and what you like says things about who you are as a person or your political leanings;

pushed the idea that if you care for something *problematic* just because you like it you’re excusing it;

pushed the idea that if you were problematic once you can’t ever not be problematic, you can’t change your mind and you can’t learn also because ‘it’s not my job to educate you’ so people either learn themselves or idek what but again, calvinism.

now obviously those politics are tumblr-politics which are also US centric like woah and are also high-school petty like woah, and since more or less then people have:

continuously other-ed lgbt people from *straight*/heterosexual people pushing a narrative where straight = bad and therefore putting it before anything automatically makes it a valid insult which added to the above means that if you ship het you’re already problematic regardless of whether you’re straight or not (and if you are.. lol);

pushed the performative feminism of Doom TM that says men and women should be equal but is like, an excuse to shit on men and on women who like men (see the rampant biphobia around and the whole ‘straight girls are so stupid if they’re into men they should try women’ discourse);

pushed the US terminology when it comes to the POC discourse, in the sense that everything works on the US-centered context where white people = white anglosaxon protestant, poc = everything else without realizing that in the rest of the world white does not equal wasp, that poc = black people only in most of europe (and no one who’s actually black or not white who lives in africa or asia and so on would describe themselves as poc because why the hell would you when your skin color/ethinicity is the norm where you live?), which also goes with the whole white passing debate which where I live would not exist but in that context is a mess because again, oscar i*saac is schroedinger’s poc (as in, he’s poc automatically for american standards because he’s latin-american but like he has the same skin tone as my mother and my mother in italy is white same as 90% of us, which means endless confusion) and assumed that all of us have to accept that terminology/context regardless of whether it’s valid in our countries;

kept on progressively putting minorities against each other in an endless loop of WHO HAS IT WORST/oppression olympics;

kept on progressively split hairs on issues that aren’t exactly, like, that important if there’s more urgent stuff to deal with because 90% of the activism here is performative;

made the 180° turn for which headcanons and shit are seen as, like, doing representation instead of, you know, supporting what rep is there never mind when people decide *one* ship is the right one and if another is canonized and it’s rep it gets thoroughly ignored;

pushed on a mindset for which if something isn’t perfect at the get-go then it’s canceled.

and so on.

like, all of that shit has been continuously not criticized because criticizing it especially if you don’t belong to a minority means that you’re out of line/discussing things that don’t concern you, but if you’re a minority and you criticize it then it’s suddenly YOU BETRAYED OUR CAUSE *INSERT SLUR HERE ABOUT PANDERING TO THE MAJORITY*, and the result exploded in toxic af fandoms, but like... if you look at the issues of the SW sequel trilogy fandom it’s all of that in a nutshell because:

k/ylo ren is automatically the worst because he’s white (horrible), a man (even worse), not canonically attractive (I didn’t touch on that topic bc I’m honestly not up for it mentally but lmao that counts too) and presumably heterosexual (or well, no one said he’s not but you know, since he’s a white dude on the bad side [supposedly] then we don’t give him the benefit of the doubt that he might be bi), so if you like ky/lo ren or relate to him you’re automatically problematic;

shipping re/ylo because automatically problematic because it’s a *straight* (evil) ship made of two white people (when there’s options to ship them both with people that aren’t white, so IT’S RACIST), they have an age gap (BAD BECAUSE POWER IMBALANCE) and it’s enemies to lovers, so it’s a context where people who don’t conceive redemption or that people can become better are basically crying problematic all the time, and the fact that people decided it’s *abusive* when it has like nothing that can equate it to a really abusive relationship says all;

ky/lux being the most popular slash ship immediately means that it’s the fault of the horrible straight (white) women fetishizing the (white) men on the dark side (when it’s most likely because for a while ky/lux was literally the only side of that fandom where people were chill/there wasn’t wank every other moment);

Abuela still needs to be held accountable to a degree. Yes she's a good person who acted that way out of built reasons- but that doesn't mean she shouldn't be held accountable. Regardless of culture. That's something that needs to be done more in general. People can dislike her for it if they want. Hell my Puerto Rican mother dislikes her! That has nothing to do with culture. You can disagree but you can't call people out on it.

Headcanoning Isabela as a lesbian isn't always specifically because she didn't want to marry a man- (in which case when it is- yes there is an issue). I headcanon her lesbian because she just has the vibes-. It doesn't erase the fact this was a culturally based situation. If it was a woman she didn't want to marry it would be the same deal. She just wanted to please her family (which frankly isn't even a purely Latin thing though in this case was based from there yes).

If someone wants to headcanon Camilo as genderfluid because of his powers they can. some thoughts about the encanto “fandom” more specifically to non pocs.

it’s very clear who it yt and who is poc when it comes to hcs and thats what makes some hcs frustrating. some hcs treat the things characters a seen doing as “not normal” things when its actually just common things we do in our culture.

A lot of the actions Bruno does (i.e knocking on wood) is because of his superstitions, and it’s normal for him to do this a lot because latino people take superstitions very seriously (I would know. Im half Mexican and watched my Mexican father be extremely superstitious for 9 years) Bruno throwing the salt and sugar is also a common thing? i’ve done the salt thing many times lol. and when he was jumping over the cracks he was saying a healing spell at the same time. all he’s ever heard from people is that he brings back luck so of course he is going to do things that “ward off” bad luck.

Camilo’s character description “doesn't quite know who he is yet” + his powers being shapeshifting does not mean he’s gender fluid (and trust me, i would love this representation and some hcs make me really happy to see BUT..). His shapeshifting makes sense when they also describe him as a “Theatre Kid” and he’s 15! Of course he’s trying to figure out who he is! And im sure her feels pressure with his Abuela (literally everyone feels pressure from her!) The day after Anontios ceremony, she says “we’ll find a way to make your gift useful” and im sure she said the same to Camilo with shapeshifting, because that is a tricky one to figure out.

That showed how she was doing something she thought was “best” for her family rather than being with someone she actually loves. Her song is literally about how she “has” to be perfect. That is her character story. The pressure of everyone telling her how perfect and beautiful she is and being frustrated and scared because she doesn’t want to be perfect.

Grandparents in latino families are honestly.. well it’s always something new. I can’t stand to see the way some people speak about Abuela. I was very upset with her too, and yeah she was a bitch but can you blame her for reacting the way she did? She had to flee her home because of a war that was happening, watched her husband die, and was left to take care of three children. of course she took control of things. she was scared to lose her family and because of that fear it over took her sight with trying to make everything be perfect and not weak. after all, the magic was given to her family. any signs of weakness could have made her lose her family and home, something she fought for, that her husband died for.

also if Abuela didn’t care about Mirabel, how was she the one to find her? Abuela cares for all of her family, she just had a hard way of showing it because of everything she had been through.

it’s totally okay to hc characters how you want and find comfort in these characters but a big problem with people hc characters is the fact that they are erasing the actual meaning behind the movie. lgbtq+ representation is amazing, especially coming from a kids movie but that is not what encanto is about. encanto was for latin representation and people are making it to be lgbtq+ representation. if you are going to talk about these characters then you do need to understand a lot of the thing they do and say have actually meanings a cultural beliefs behind them.

apologies if none of this makes sense, it is 3 in the morning for me but :) im tired of seeing certain things under the encanto tag! don’t even wanna get started on the weird and creepy shipping and how people are drawing characters with a lighter skintone + smaller noses.. sigh.. pocs can never have something for themselves can we?

fav hugh x paul headcanon?

fav you say? fav?? every headcanon is my fave how do i choose? T.T so let’s have several bc i’m in the mood for that!

(this got very long i’m sorry) (also these are the only ones that i could think of now, but i’m p sure i’ve got more....)

paul is almost always the big spoon (and the main reason i hc that is because relatively early on into disco, @sleepymccoy made this really adorable piece where paul is the big spoon); sometimes he ends up sleeping more on top of hugh if hugh rolls onto his stomach. it’s also great because hugh runs colder than paul does, so he’ll always be warmed up.

paul is usually naturally able to rise earlier, which continues to surprise the hell out of hugh because paul never gets enough sleep. on the other hand, hugh is a morning person, and paul is a morning zombie who shuffles along but barely interacts.

hugh taught paul to dance a couple latin american dances, because his ma made him take lessons for that when he was a kid and he ended up enjoying it a lot. so does paul! they also sometimes just slowdance in their quarters, when either of them is too tired to do much more, and with some arranging they usually manage to lean against the other one.

hugh is a picky eater; paul is used to that and already knows what foods will be regarded with disdain and steals them preemptively. hugh thinks it’s cute. 

on the other hand, paul is the better cook. hugh isn’t bad, but since he barely ever cooked, well, ever, always having either lived with roommates or gotten take out, he needs quite some practise still.that doesn’t mean paul eats healthily though. on a good day he’ll scarf down two meals and the rest of his energy comes from candy (he’d die for some caramel at any given time. that or all kinds of sweets you can suck on, as well as lollipops). hugh has learned to always carry candies with him to save the world from a sugar-deprieved paul stamets.

hugh has a phd in drinking too much coffee, and since paul had an incident with his heart in his twenties (it was because he’d been living off of coffee and energy drinks), he’s slowly substituting hugh’s coffee for decaffeinated. he wrote a custom program that takes one percent of caffeine out of hugh’s coffee every day. so far, hugh hasn’t noticed.paul himself prefers tea when he’s working and hot chocolate when he’s relaxing.

hugh cries during movies. paul cries about real life.

paul gets embarrassed about pda usually, for no explainable reason. hand holding alone can make him blush and be a little squirmy. hugh finds it adorable, even though he had his problems with it originally.in private, paul’s one hell of a cuddler and usually at least creeps his toes somewhere close to hugh.

hugh believes in the principle of ordered chaos. paul is going to scream next time he can’t find his... well, his anything.

hugh’s idea of fashion is adventurous, so to speak. (paul sometimes thinks hugh is colorblind.)

also, paul knows that hugh is not exactly musically inclined, but he’d ask you not to remark on that because it’ll hurt hugh’s feelings.

a stressed hugh is an oddly cheerful hugh. really, you’d think he’s in a great mood, except that there’s something off with him. he’ll work out more, be quicker to do most things and he’ll always feel too forced. depending on what kind of stress it is, paul will either be snappish or withdraw.but usually it’s easier to sit paul down and interrogate him until he spills whatever’s bothering him, and hugh usually manages to do that within minutes.hugh is more complicated in that aspect, and he’s likely to get really pissy about being asked what’s wrong. paul has to tread pretty carefully and work out what it is that’s bothering hugh and how to help. sometimes a massage will do it, because hugh swears up and down that paul’s fingers are magical. sometimes it’s really exhausting lovemaking until neither of them can speak anymore. sometimes paul will go directly to the CMO and ask tell her to give hugh a shift off, or rearrange them so he can sleep in for once (and if he can he’ll rearrange his shifts so he can sleep in with hugh).

hugh is not exactly a social butterfly, but he’s got a group of friends and workout buddies. paul generally prefers not to, even though sometimes people just worm their way into his life and stay there. he pretends that it pisses him off.

the first time they talked about sex, hugh promised to make paul scream. he didn’t manage to the first time, but one day he found the button, and the button is to eat paul out (paul will prefer to be on his knees so he can hide his face in the pillows. the neighbors would prefer that too. hugh doesn’t.). paul will never admit it (ie he told hugh immediately) that part of why it feels so great is because of hugh’s beard, so now hugh would rather die than shave.

paul is also a huge fan of shower sex. they tried it once, but (after hugh had healed both their coccyxes and some other bruises) they didn’t really get into it until after paul’s birthday, where hugh got him a no slip shower mat (it has mushrooms on it because of course it does).

when paul bottoms, he prefers to be riding hugh.

they’ve eventually decided to get a dice to decide who tops and who bottoms, because otherwise it’s going to turn into a whole lot of dirty talk and they won’t make it to the bedroom then.

but sometimes one of them knows exactly what they want - paul will just straight up sit on hugh’s lap and tell him what to do in explicit detail, yet very straightforward. hugh will seduce paul.

paul’s got a bit of an oral fixiation, so usually when he’s working or relaxing he’ll start nibbling his lower lip or on his fingers (or on candy); it also means that he gladly blows hugh. and that’s lead to hugh having a fixiation on paul’s lips. it would be funny if it weren’t so damn distracting.

paul usually falls asleep after sex, or is at least pretty damn useless once he’s satisfied. if they’ve got the time, they’ll fit in two rounds, but not if paul has things to do that day.

hugh’s favorite way to get fingered is lying on top of paul, because it makes them touch everywhere, and paul is soft and squishy and warm (and god, does hugh love paul’s squishiness, and rolling his hips into paul’s stomach.), and he can moan into paul’s neck. it’s tough on paul’s wrist though, so they have to cut it out sooner than hugh would like.

both of them would probably transcend the third dimension in embarrassement if they were caught having sex - paul’s too shy for that and for hugh it’s the privacy infringement that would be the issue. the CMO walked in on them making out in an examination room once and paul can’t think of the incident without turning flaming red.

hugh’s favorite body part of paul’s is his stomach (warm and squishy) and his hands (very, very talented - he gives mean massages, and he’s really good at fingering) as well as the ridge of his shoulders. paul is in love with hugh’s chest and ass, which leads to hugh bottoming a lot (not that he minds).

hugh absolutely adores the contrast of their skin. paul thinks he’s too pale (hugh says he’s practically translucent), but hugh loves it. especially when he’s topping and they’re in a position where he can watch himself push into paul, he gets incredibly fascinated by it. sometimes to an extent where paul has to remind hugh that he’s still here, and he’d like to come sometime soon.

paul hates comm sex, and video sex even more. also, now that he’s gotten used to having hugh around, he gets pretty severe abandonment fears when they have to spend nights apart (ie one of them on a planet, or at a conference etc).

when they’re able to take their time, hugh will litter paul’s body with hickeys. they shine very nicely on his skin, and they make paul moan very prettily.

paul almost fainted the first time he saw hugh topless, because hugh has both his nipples pierced with beautiful gold bars, so paul has yet another reason to extensively play with hugh’s chest. a bonus of that is that it gets hugh sensitive enough to start swearing almost continuously in spanish. paul would like to pretend that that doesn’t get him hot, but he’s very bad at it.(there are also hugh’s tattoos, which paul is very much in love with).

I found this article online, but I didn’t see it shared anywhere here on Tumblr, so I thought I’d bring it to the attention of the Midnight, Texas fandom. Especially since this interview with Bernardo Saracino touches on a number of issues that I’ve discussed before regarding his character on MTX, and why there’s a difference between being a stereotype and painting characters of color as perfect to avoid being accused of being a stereotype. (I maintain that both are equally damaging to PoC, and Chuy is neither.)

BERNARDO SARACINO: ‘MIDNIGHT’ CHARACTER BREAKS STEREOTYPES

Midnight, Texas revealed Chuy Strong’s supernatural secret, but the demon’s major superpower is breaking stereotypes, says actor Bernardo Saracino.

“I was in love with the … fact that Chuy’s just a guy. He happens to be Hispanic. He happens to be gay. He’s fully developed with feelings and emotions. He’s in a loving relationship. He’s married. He’s a whole person,” Saracino said. “That was my excitement when I read for the role.”

In the latest episode of the supernatural series based on the novels of Charlaine Harris, Chuy and his hubby of a thousand years, the angel Joe, told their fellow Midnighters that Chuy is half human and half demon.

During a phone conversation before the episode aired Sept. 4, I told Saracino I believed his character was a demon. He offered no hint that I had figured out Chuy’s secret.

“I’ve read a lot of interesting theories online,” he said before changing the subject. Later in our chat, he agreed that Chuy and Joe share a Romeo and Romeo love story. (Read: Pair of Romeos in ‘Midnight, Texas.’)

The duo had to come clean in the “Angel Heart” episode because another fallen angel flew into town to hunt down Joe (Jason Lewis). Bowie (Breeda Wool) and Joe used to slay heaven’s enemies together, before Joe met Chuy and “betrayed” Bowie, as she seemed to believe.

The episode revealed how Joe and Chuy met. Joe intervened when Chuy was getting beaten up by attackers. What wasn’t clear to me was when Joe learned Chuy was a demon.

“Joe didn’t know he was a demon until he saw the black [demon] blood,” Saracino said Tuesday during another phone chat. “As far as Joe knew, he stepped in to help a person getting beat up and robbed of his shoes.”

Joe fell for Chuy despite him being half demon, Saracino said, partly because of Chuy’s decision to live a life of pacifism. In the episode, Joe explains to their friends that when he asked Chuy why he didn’t turn demon to dispatch his attackers, Chuy said, “Maybe they needed the shoes more than I did.”

“That shows what kind of person Chuy is,” Saracino said Tuesday. “That line really solidified for me Chuy’s strong character and how he has resisted his demon side through positivity and pacifism.”

Chuy showed his stereotype-busting character again in the episode. After a failed attempt by the other Midnighters to banish Bowie to hell, Chuy was all that was left between Joe’s survival or death. Despite the danger his demonic transformation posed to him and his fellow Midnighters, Chuy went full demon and killed the bad angel.

“Every time the Midnighters fight a villain they are united by their love of each other,” Saracino said, adding that Chuy had to turn demon for his friends. “They all choose to live there and they stay and fight for the family that they’ve chosen.”

The fight will continue next week, when NBC airs new episodes at 9/8c Sept. 11 and 12 before wrapping up the first season on Sept. 18. Saracino said even though Chuy is having a hard time fighting the tearing of the veil—not unlike Lem and the Rev are—he will stick around Midnight to help in the coming battle against evil. But it won’t be easy.

“At this point in time, the shit’s really going to hit the fan,” he said. “We’re talking about this world ending.”

Saracino and I talked more about Chuy as man and beast, as well as how the character breaks a couple of Hollywood stereotypes, and what he thinks of Grandma Xylda.

ON CHUY’S DECISION TO EMBRACE NON-VIOLENCE:

“Chuy has learned throughout his lifetime—which has been quite some time—that it’s never to our benefit to be extremely reactionary. He has chosen to be a pacifist. That’s the part of Chuy that I fell in love with when I read the scripts.”

ON THE AFFECT KILLING BOWIE WILL HAVE ON CHUY:

I think Chuy knows how dark he can get. That’s why he’s always trying to stay positive and seeking love. To know that you have that amount of darkness inside of you—it must be a struggle to keep it at bay. It’s an internal struggle because it’s not who he chose to be. So he wasn’t happy to [transform and kill Bowie], but he did it to save those he loved.”

ON THE MAKEUP FOR CHUY THE DEMON:

“The makeup took about three hours to apply, but prior to that I flew to Pasadena and they did a body mold and a face cast to have those to create Chuy’s body and face prosthetics. They had to paint and tailor it to my actual face for filming. It fits so perfectly and snuggly I’d forget it was on my face.”

ON HOW CAST AND CREW REACTED TO SARACINO IN MAKEUP:

“No one really knew until our table read that he was a demon. For all those episodes we were wondering. … I would forget that [the makeup] was on. Off set we were always talking and these cast members are so funny we’d always be laughing. On those days they’d be like, ‘I can’t talk to you’ or ‘This is too much.’”

ON HOW CHUY BREAKS ONE STEREOTYPE:

“As an actor of color, what I really loved about Chuy was that he was not written in a stereotypical way. There are very few roles and opportunities for Latin actors—male or female—in American cinema. Less than 3 percent of roles go to Latin actors despite us being the largest minority in the United States.

“So I was used to portraying stereotypes—gang members, drug dealers. I mean, they paid my bills so I have a love/hate relationship with those kinds of roles. But I don’t want the world to see Latin men as only drug lords. I read this and it was a complete breath of fresh air. It was phenomenal.”

“Latin characters on TV don’t have to be drug lords and gay men can be in loving relationships. … I do believe representation matters.”

ON HOW CHUY AND JOE BUST ANOTHER STEREOTYPE:

“They’re never introduced by saying, ‘This is Chuy and Joe; they’re two dudes and they [have sex]. They’re just two dudes in love. [Their sexuality] is addressed in the show in such a major way by not being addressed. It just is. The veil of Earth is tearing, and that’s not going to come between them.

“Someone might watch this show and realize gay people are not the stereotypes that Hollywood has told people they are, which is A. extremely promiscuous, or B. complete alcoholics, or C. not able to love.”

A FINAL THOUGHT ON THE SUBJECT OF BUSTING STEREOTYPES:

“If we go to a second season, there are going to millions of people around the world who are going to welcome this couple into their living rooms. And that matters to me. That will have a lasting effect on people who won’t have to be depressed because they’ve never seen anyone like themselves on TV. Young gay men and women will grow up watching this supernatural show with their families. A show that was not meant to be political, but gives them representation. I am humbled by that.”

ON WHAT THE VEIL BETWEEN HELL AND EARTH TEARING SYMBOLIZES TO SARACINO:

“All of us as humans are at such a fragile point because the veil—or the ground we stand on—is constantly in flux. We forget that everything … we hold valuable and near and dear is so fragile. We choose to avoid thinking about that, because we’d go crazy if we didn’t [ignore it].”

“To me that’s the most beautiful part of human existence, that we are able to find the beauty in what is fleeting by avoiding what is happening.”

ON WHAT HE HOPES VIEWERS GET FROM WATCHING MIDNIGHT, TEXAS:

“I hope people find a good hour of entertainment and escapism. It makes them happy. But I also hope they get the subliminal message we have in ‘Midnight’ about family and coming together. …

“I hope people take away the idea that family doesn’t necessarily have to be blood relatives. It also can be the people that you choose to surround yourself with and who have your back and who love you and vice versa. They accept you with all your quirks and you accept them—simply because love is the answer. What I would like people to take away is to choose love and to see the beauty in every other humans around you.”

ON WHAT HE BROUGHT TO THE ROLE OF CHUY:

“Chuy’s a little bit guarded and private. He’s not at the restaurant every night; he has a life he keeps to himself. I brought that level of being cognizant when you do and don’t allow people into your world. And outside of that the ability to find self love and peace within your own existence in a world that, because of the way one perceives it, isn’t welcoming. But finding a level where you can reconcile your peace and your self love and finding that place in your heart.

“As we started filming, I knew [Monica Owusu-Breen] had spent much more time with Chuy than I had. So I asked her to tell me more about how she saw him. She talked about how he has this level of self love against all odds, which I think is part of our human journey and part of my tapestry, too. I lost my mom and sister when I was a kid; my grandparents raised my brother and I.

“We’ll find out later that Chuy has had a lot of loss in his life. It was really existential moment for me when I learned this. I kept thinking, ‘How on Earth did these writers know that I could relate to Chuy at this level?’

“I remember living under a black cloud [after my family loss]. A lot of people don’t realize there is a level of shame, kind of, to being motherless when you’re a kid. You don’t want anyone to know. I would avoid talking about my mother or sister. I thought if I told people they died then they would treat me like a wounded puppy. … When you’re a kid you don’t want that kind of attention.

“There are a lot of levels of Chuy’s existence that he had to hide in order to go unnoticed. That resonated with me because I’ve done the same thing.”

AND FINALLY, ON MANFRED’S GHOSTLY GRANDMOTHER:

“I love her. Grandma Xylda [Joanne Camp] is like my spirit animal. I want a talking cat and a Grandma Xylda. I would be so happy. Wow, that says a lot about me.”
