Hidden music and hidden crime

(a slightly expanded version of what I wrote on Discord last night)

The original lines of Lucan for reference:

ac, uelut occultum pereat scelus, omnia monstra                  252 in facie posuere ducum: iuuat esse nocentis.

Lucan may be translating and paraphrasing one of Nero's favourite sayings: "hidden music" becomes "hidden crime". Nero's debut in Naples occurred in 64; Nero's use of the proverb must predate it.

Moreover, I believe that the context in which Lucan's line is placed points at Nero's behaviour. The crime that Lucan's soldiers show so proudly is kinslaying. A large part of Nero's method was parading around his guilt in order to "frame the terms of debate over [it]" (Champlin): in particular, he had a penchant for performing Orestes and Alcmaeon, the matricides.

It should be noted that while the image Lucan draws ("Amid tables and couches / they gashed the flesh which but lately they'd held and caressed" - lines 245-246, Wilson Joyce) may not be related to Nero's murder of Agrippina, it resembles Nero's murder of his stepbrother Britannicus at a banquet.

And so it appears to me that Lucan draws a metatextual connection between singing and crime. It is applicable to Nero (he sings on stage, performing his own crimes); it is applicable also to Lucan himself (his act of writing the poem revives the crimes and guilt of civil war and puts them on display, so they may not remain hidden).

Culminó el Mundial de Montaña y Trail en Innsbruck

El venezolano Pedro Puentes entre los hombres y la peruana Gladys Tejeda entre las damas fueron los sudamericanos más destacados en la prueba “Classic” sobre unos 15 km., al culminar este sábado 10 de junio el Campeonato Mundial de Montaña y Trail Running en Innsbruck-Stubai, en el Tirol austríaco. Puentes ocupó el 29° puesto en la clasificación masculina, que abarcó a los 120 corredores que cumplieron la prueba. En damas, la peruana Tejeda quedó 23ª. entre las 94 atletas y su presencia fue toda una novedad: es la recordwoman sudamericana y campeona panamericana del maratón, su especialidad, en el atletismo clásico. También se realizó la prueba “Classic” para los juniors (u20). I loved her, and sometimes she loved me too.

On nights like this, I held her in my arms.

I kissed her so many times under the infinite sky.

She loved me, sometimes I loved her.

How could I not have loved her large, still eyes?

I can write the saddest poem of all tonight.

To think I don’t have her. To feel that I’ve lost her.

To hear the immense night, more immense without her.

And the poem falls to the soul as dew to grass.

What does it matter that my love couldn’t keep her.

The night is full of stars and she is not with me.

That’s all. Far away, someone sings. Far away.

My soul is lost without her.

As if to bring her near, my eyes search for her.

My heart searches for her and she is not with me.

The same night that whitens the same trees.

We, we who were, we are the same no longer.

I no longer love her, true, but how much I loved her.

Compared to other days in recent memory, the sunshiny 52 degrees at the Barn  today were Fabulous. 

The Admiral Armando gave us a mobility/ flexibility warmup that was much appreciated.

Dana then volunteered to model / demo the 4 exercises done in the warmup.

Notes:

A couple visited from the Arboretum path.  Joyce was somewhat of a regular here several years ago.  A CRNA who worked with us, she had many other athletic interests.  Shattering her forearm mountain-biking assured that she would never play at the Barn again.  Husband Tom never came here, but as our Internist, he did rectal exams on a few of us guys for many years.  And so it goes...

Old Joe had to withdraw from the 21 AMRAP midway today.  His right Scapula was hurting.  He says he will back off and take it easy ( as we all had warned him ) from now on.  We will watch with interest.  Our Old Bird-Man is a little bit of a knuckle-head sometimes.

Sabrina returned for her 2nd visit.  For a CrossFit initiate, she learns the exercises quickly and moves very well like most youngsters.  I hope she keeps coming.

Robert is Skiing.  He took some of his buddies.  Many of you noticed his absence and inquired, which is an unfortunate curiosity to me, since this is not his gym.  Shane said he will not stay away much longer because he wants to get back and do the CrossFit Open workouts.  Apparently Robert has dreams of qualifying for the Games in the over 50 bald headed men category. 

Brandon/ Brendan / Branden (whatever) has finally obtained a regular paying occupation and can now afford to go to a real CrossFit establishment.  He will be blessing CrossFit Nashville with his presence, and will perhaps keep his foot in our door by showing up on Sundays when CFN is closed.  Please recall that in spite of daily inquiries, Brandon/Brenden/Brandan has never brought the much anticipated Lady-Friend to the Barn.  I pray that Allison S. kicks his butt at CFN.

Tuesday at 4 PM.  The weather should be cool and sunny.  Should we have wine tastings on Tuesday’s as well as Thursday’s ??

SÉANCE #13 : [Bilan du cours]

Le cours Médias Numériques et société est un cours d’introduction aux enjeux sociaux de la communication à l'ère numérique. (Latzko-Toth, s.d., paragr. 3). « Panorama des grandes problématiques contemporaines liées au déploiement et à l’usage des technologies numériques en réseau », on y aborde les « [p]rincipaux médias numériques et leurs usages sociaux, déjà bien établis ou émergents » (Latzko-Toth, s.d., paragr. 3). 

Malgré le fait que tous les sujets abordés soient très intéressants et pertinents à observer dans le contexte numérique et technologique dans lequel nous vivons présentement, certains ont attiré davantage mon attention. Entre autres, celui portant sur les mondes virtuels et les avatars, un phénomène amené par l’évolution des technologies numériques par le biais, notamment, de jeux virtuels, tels que Second Life. Ce thème est particulièrement fascinant, car il est relié à divers concepts.  En effet, cette thématique nous amène aux notions de construction et la présentation de soi et à se pencher sur l’aspect éthique. Évidemment, le jeux Second Life comporte des bénéfices, dont des ressources permettant l’éducation des utilisateurs à l’égard de la médecine et de la santé (Boulos, Hetherington et Wheeler, 2007, p. 234-235).

Les avatars du jeu, créés par les utilisateurs eux-mêmes, permettent aux individus de s’exprimer librement et de développer des aspects de leur personnalité dont ils n’avaient peut-être même pas conscience auparavant. Par exemple, une femme projetant une image professionnelle dans la vie « réelle », peut créer son avatar en fonction de ses aspirations les plus profondes, en lui attribuant une forte poitrine, des vêtements plus provocateurs, etc. Or, le jeux comporte également des risques, considérant le fait qu’il permet aux usagers de générer de réels profit, mais aussi d’en perdre (Mennecke, Terando, Joyce Janvrin et Dilla, 2007). De plus, puisque Second Life comporte aussi des risques pour la santé des joueurs, tels que la cyber-dépendance. Il faut alors se pencher sur les considérations éthiques.

Ainsi, ce sujet, très intéressant et très large à étudier, comporte plusieurs avantages et désavantages, donc il est pertinent de peser les arguments favorables et défavorables à son égard. D’ailleurs, Second Life est un exemple parmi tant d’autres. Avec la présente évolution des technologies numériques, plusieurs autres plateformes du genre émergent et les conséquences ne pourront être observées que plusieurs années après leur apparition. C’est pourquoi je crois qu’il s’agit d’une thématique importante à aborder.

The Chartwell estate, a French neoclassical megamansion nestled comfortably on 10.3 manicured acres in Bel Air, has hit the market with quite a roar. With an asking price of $245 million, the Los Angeles listing is the most expensive in the U.S. Take a bow, Chartwell!

The extreme price made plenty of headlines, and is touted as “the ultimate trophy” by Hilton and Hyland, one of several brokerage houses representing the real estate behemoth.

The luxe listing was quietly shopped around for the crazy-high price of $350 million last year. However, a sale for anywhere near its current price would be one for the record books. The current record holder is a $110 million home sale in Malibu earlier this year.

The 25,000-square-foot mansion was built in the1930s by architect Sumner Spaulding, commissioned by a property developer as a gift for his wife, according to Variety. Sadly, she apparently disliked the opulence of the place and never moved in. 

Amazingly, the home sat empty until the 1940s, when it was bought by hotelier Arnold Kirkeby, whose family held it until the 1980s.

Amenities of the chateau include a limestone facade, a ballroom, formal salon, paneled dining room, “world-class wine cellar,” and covered parking for 40 cars, according to the listing. 

The grounds boast a long private driveway, a five-bedroom guesthouse designed by Wallace Neff, gardens, a tennis court, pool with pool house, and “jetliner” views of downtown Los Angeles and the Pacific Ocean.

Fans of the 1960s sitcom “The Beverly Hillbillies” may recognize the main house featured in the TV show’s opening credits. Sadly, the compound now would probably be out of reach even for the Clampetts.

Justiça Federal de Porto Alegre leiloa mais de 30 veículos de luxo

Em 2019, a operação “Egypto” – realizada pela Polícia Federal – atuou contra a empresa In Deal, que atuava no ramo financeiro sem autorização do Banco Central do Brasil e tinha sede em Novo Hamburgo-RS.

Com promessa de retorno de 15% do investimento no primeiro mês, a empresa captava recursos de terceiros para aplicação no mercado de criptomoedas sem autorização dos órgãos competentes.

Na operação contra a In Deal, foram apreendidos mais de 30 carros de luxo, que agora serão leiloados pela Justiça Federal de Porto Alegre, que fará um leilão eletrônico entre os dias 1 e 13 de abril de 2020.

Os lances começam às 14hs e podem ser feitos de qualquer lugar do Brasil. Na lista de veículos, que pode ser acessado pelo site do leiloeiro, onde também está incluída uma lancha. Os interessados deverão se cadastrar no site do leilão, 24 horas de iniciar os lances.

De acordo com Joyce Ribeiro, leiloeira contratada pela Justiça Federal, os carros e os valores dos lances sequem abaixo:

Ferrari Califórnia, vermelha, 09/09, avaliada em R$ 670 mil, poderá ser arrematada por R$ 536 mil

BMW X6 M, 16/17, blindada, preta, avaliada em R$ 420 mil, poderá ser arrematada por R$ 336 mil

Dodge Challenger SXT, 14/15, branca, avaliada em R$ 400 mil, poderá ser arrematada por R$ 320 mil

Jaguar Epace P250 STD, 18/18, blindado, preto, avaliada em R$ 245 mil, poderá ser arrematada por R$ 196 mil

Ford Mustang GT, 18/19, blindado, preto, avaliada em R$ 325 mil, poderá ser arrematada por R$ 260 mil

Ford Mustang GT, 18/19, preto, avaliada em R$ 285 mil, poderá ser arrematada por R$ 228 mil

RAM 2500 Laramie, 18/18, avaliada em R$ 230 mil, poderá ser arrematada por R$ 184 mil
