Lore Bites: Neuvillette's Opera-Going

Not sure if I'll have the spoons to do my next Shahnameh post today, but I did want to write up this little bit of meta-lore I cobbled together from last week.

I was going through some of Neuvillette's voice lines since I only have him at Friendship 1 atm, and I came across this one I really liked:

Now, I have to confess that I've never actually read Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca. Or seen a film version. But I know of it. So I was like - huh. That premise sounds a lot like Rebecca.

Two things: 1) Neuvillette's comment that the opera "reminded him of the current state of affairs" tells me one major thing: that the ghost of Egeria, the previous Hydro Archon, is "haunting" Fontaine in one way or another. We know that Egeria isn't exactly DEAD-dead - what's left of her consciousness is tied to the Amrita Pool and perhaps elsewhere but that's not confirmed yet. So it stands to reason that her influence is being felt by many residing in the Court now - especially by the "new Mrs. DeWinter," or New Ms. Hydro Archon, who constantly doubts her ability to govern.

2) I read this and after thinking, "huh, this sounds like Rebecca," my second thought was, "but Rebecca doesn't have an opera adaptation, right?"

It turns out that it does. German lybrettist Michael Kunze turned Rebecca into a musical in 2006, and it was exceedingly popular in Japan and Korea (though there's no mention of a Chinese production on the Wikipedia page). Michael Kunze is the same lybrettist who produced Elisabeth in 1992.

Elisabeth, btw, is a musical adaptation of the life of Empress Elisabeth of Austria, the wife of Emperor Franz Joseph I, and her figurative-turned-literal love affair with Death. Terminal Tumblrites among us might be familiar with it (as I was) from a collection of gifs from the Takarazuka Revue productiona a while back. Elisabeth appears to be a Takarazuka favorite, as they've produced it regularly since 1996.

I don't know about you, but I think Neuvillette's outfit has quite a lot of Takarazuka flair.

Lydia Mendoza (May 31, 1916 – December 20, 2007) was a Mexican-American guitarist and singer of Tejano and traditional Mexican-American music. Historian Michael Joseph Corcoran has stated that she was "The Mother of Tejano Music", an art form that is the uniquely Texas cultural amalgamation of traditional Mexican, Spanish, German, and Czech musical roots.

SPANKING ON TV #9

The Spanking (2017) d. Carlos Uribe

Psychotic big sister Grace gets her younger brother Sam into trouble by claiming that he threw her phone in the swimming pool, but it’s all a cunning ploy to get a new phone. Plus, later she tells Sam that she’s bored and will enjoy seeing him in pain. Mom sends him his room to wait for dad to get home from work, whereupon he’s duly belted over dad’s knee. But, wait, there’s a twist—you’ll have to watch the video to find out!

The film strongly implies that corporal punishment is routine in this home, at least for Sam. Grace has come up with a crime that she knows will get her brother belted, plus she gets a new phone, so it’s a win-win for her. Sam, meanwhile, knows exactly what being sent to his room to await dad’s return means. Then, at the appointed hour, without a word being spoken, Sam pulls down his jeans and gets into position on dad’s lap. Afterwards, Sam returns to his room and with a sigh selects a pillow to sit on as his bottom is hurting, which again implies he’s done this before.

It doesn’t look as if Sam is punished privately in his bedroom. Dad belts him on the living room couch, which means Grace gets to watch and enjoy his suffering as she planned. He’s at least allowed to keep his underwear on.

I counted 13 lashes, but the sound fades out, so the implication is that poor Sam gets more (admittedly 13 is an odd number for dad to end on).

It’s a good set-up but Sam gets far too many lashes for such a young boy. Even so, afterwards he shows no signs of this; there’s no bottom rubbing or wincing when he sits down. Indeed, he’s sitting on a regular dining room chair a bit later just looking a bit dejected. In reality, I doubt he could sit down at all!

Sam is played by Zander Grable, who was 13 years old at the time. His real-life sister Alexandria Grable plays Grace—let’s hope she’s not like this to him in real life! Michael Joseph Pierce is suitably scary as the dad—be honest, you wouldn’t argue with him if he told you to bend over! It’s only Danielle Hernandez who lets the side down as mom, with acting so wooden you could chop vegetables on her.

Despite opposition from medical and social services professionals, as of 2023, spanking children at home is legal in the US. In 17 states corporal punishment is also lawful in both public and private schools.

Up to 100 points available, shorter (like one line) descriptions will earn less points.

Mother’s Day, directed by Charles Kaufman and featuring an admirable performance from Beatrice Pons as “Mother,” looks far better than it deserves to look. Except for Pons and cinematographer Joseph Mangine, Mother’s Day features a group of relative novices, and yet, the acting, story, and humor propel this film from beginning to end, even though it’s a bit tough to watch in places. Hey! The three lead victims of Mother’s clan even have story arcs! Eli Roth’s favorite movie can’t be all bad, can it?

At the time of this writing, Mother’s Day is available to stream from Shudder, Tubi, PlutoTV, and several PPV sources. The movie is available on physical media from Vinegar Syndrome in a 2-disc Region Free Set: 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray.

Jövő márciusban ismét Budapesten portyázik Dani Filth és hírhedt zenekara, a Cradle Of Filth. A több mint 30 éve aktív csapatot a jól ismert amerikai horrorpunk énekes, Wednesday 13 is elkíséri, aki Murderdolls programmal készül, nyitózenekarként pedig a Sick n’ Beautiful játszik a Dürer Kertben.

A Cradle Of Filth az angliai Suffolk megye legsötétebb bugyraiból bújt elő 1991-ben, és immár három évtizede dolgozik azon, hogy a heavy metal színtér óriásai között tartsa magát, egyre több és több embert megbotránkoztatva, vagy éppen kevély mosolyra késztetve. A Dani Filth által vezetett együttes mai napig a black, gothic és szimfonikus metal elemeket ötvöző, okkult témákat (mitológia, horrofilmek, és a ma már klasszikus sötét irodalom) feldolgozó csapatok legismertebb képviselője. Ismertségükön sokat dobott az is, hogy már évtizedekkel ezelőtt is igen látványos – és nem egyszer megbotránkoztató – színpadi jelenléttel hívták fel magukra figyelmet.
