The most insane Byler theory yet…

Please bare with me on this one… it’s out there but it’s hilarious…

So to begin, I’ll need to brief you on the flayed Hopper theory. Basically, it goes like this: Will flayed Hopper at times throughout season 3. Whenever Hopper acted childish and out of character… that was due to Will’s influence.

Okay. So basically at times: Hopper is Will, got it?

So when Murray says “Children! Children!” It got me thinking: Murray calling Hopper a child makes sense (he also called him a “manbaby”) but why does he refer to both of them as “children”?

Unless… SOMEHOW… Mike is Joyce here too.

(It’s also interesting as he repeats “children” three times in one scene and twice in another… making me think that Alexei may also be another one of the kids in this scene…)

Back to “Joyce”:

The reference to a previous bad relationship… the emphasis on wanting a “nice man”. Sounds pretty fitting for Mike too, no? Keep in mind, they could have phrased this much differently for Joyce, like mentioning Bob but they didn’t? Somehow this is fitting for Mike too?

And let’s return back to “Hopper”.

Obviously he’s a “big manbaby” because he’s actually Will! Plus of course, Will has gotten “hurt” when he “opened [his] heart” during the van scene. AGAIN, this could have been phrased much differently for Hopper… but it happens to be phrased in a way to apply to Will too…

Another interesting thing to note is that we mostly only see “Hopper” and “Joyce” refer to each other by their names when others are present… a little suspicious…

But this is just so out there and a reach, you might be thinking. Well, my friend, remember this is Stranger Things, not Straightforward Things.

Also, remember that Mike sent for them, apparently! (Mikhail=Michael) He must have been the one responsible for sending them back in time as the adults…

“Not kids anymore” clearly!

just thinking out loud but the Steve going to college because believe it or not he’s finally found a very specific course that catches his interest and it happens to be in Fort Wayne so he can still check in on the kids. It gets even better when Robin and Nancy decide they want to stay local too so they all pack together and get excited (and nervous) about moving.

The time comes and they leave Hawkins and suddenly it’s the first proper day of classes. The three of them are spread over the campus so Steve treks alone to his first class, the reason he chose the college in the first place: Introduction to Folklore.

He’s so ready to learn about something he’s finally interested in. Doesn’t pay attention to the usual seating conventions and social status, just wants to know where they’ll be starting, cliques and popularity contests a long gone part of his life.

The professor is in her stride, painting a picture with her stories of creatures from folklore and the origins, Steve can’t believe it but he’s genuinely excited to learn for once. The pinpoint accuracy focus on the professor is shattered when a voice erupts next to him

‘That’s great and everything but shouldn’t there have been a moth man lover sighting by now? Where is the justice for this noble creature I ask you? I know there’s monster fuckers out there professor.’

The professor slowly engages the guy in conversation but Steve is seething. Who does this guy think he is? Does he think this is a private class just for him? That Steve isn’t paying good money to be here? So pen clenched in a white knuckled hand Steve lets his bitchy temperament get the better of him ‘I thought this was a folklore class? Not a self insert romance lit course’ he clearly says it too loud because the boy next to him. The one who started all this turns to Steve and raises an eyebrow, a smug smile on his face and lets out a ‘huh interesting’ and what’s Steve supposed to do with that? And more importantly what’s Steve supposed to do with the fact that the guy is stupid hot with this long hair, tattoo combo and that the smug look on his face definitely made Steve’s heartbeat thunder in his ears? Out of rage on behalf of his fellow students, of course.

Turns out it doesn’t matter, the class is over and Steve is running out the door, determined not to get caught by those eyes again.

It starts off a Thing between them. Every week the guy, Eddie, will challenge the lecturer with some inane point that Steve refuses to accept he actually believes to the point of Steve firing back an argument at him. Eventually they are full on debates in the middle of the class that the professor has to mediate after eddie decided that standing on the table would be appropriate (of course, not to be outdone, steve followed).

They absolutely do not have a thing for each other and the rest of the class absolutely do have a sweepstakes on when they’ll get together

something interesting i noticed while rewatching st s1.

y’know how upside down horseshoes are supposed to represent ‘bad luck’.

there is an UPSIDE DOWN horse shoe hanging on the shed in the EXACT place will went missing.

idk if this means something or i’m delulu but i think it’d be a pretty big coincidence considering the horseshoe is UPSIDE DOWN and could represent wills bad luck AND BEING TAKEN TO THE UPSIDE DOWN.

Theory: the car crash in the winter of 1976 (Part II)

To sum up: my theory is that Joyce had a son with Lonnie, Jonathan, but then she left him because Lonnie is an a-hole. She always liked Hopper, so they finally got together and they had Will (and maybe El). The story of Agent Orange could be just a hint at the LSD mind control experiments. Anyway, in 1976 something bad happened and Hopper and El? were separated from their family (see Part I). Love this Father and daughter missing.

Not sure if Brenner was involved, but there are hints that Lonnie was. He's heavily paralleled to Billy's father, and in Billy's memory Neil believed that his wife was cheating on him. The first thing Lonnie asks Jon is if Hopper is still chief, and the moment he thinks that Will is dead, he "comes home", calls Joyce babe and tells her that she needs him. I think he didn't just want the money, he wanted his family back. And Will wasn't part of it.

A possible hint in The First Shadow that Lonnie did something to Joyce and her family is the mention of him stealing the baby from the nativity scene. Will has always been associated with Jesus...

It's also interesting, and could be evidence of different timelines, that Will is associated with fire but El is associated with cold water. Maybe Will died in the fire in one timeline, and in another one El drowned in a lake? Maybe they were both in danger but their parents could only save one of them. They both say many times that they can't breath, which is also a parallel with Sarah, so I think it's clear that something bad happened to both of them.

Did Will burn alive? I hope not but... In 3x08, when Joyce hugs him, he says that he can't breath, he's suffocating. In Fred's vision, he sees a coffin with the grandfather clock that has the name Williams engraved on it. And in 4x04 we see Billy/William's tombstone.

El sees Heather being dragged underwater, after Max opens "the floodgates" (Owens mentions them when he explains the anniversary of the event) If Billy is paralleled to Will, Heather is paralleled to El, so maybe this scene shows us what happened to El in the past.

The vanishing of Will Byers and The case of the missing lifeguard are connected.

And when she goes into Billy's memories, there's a transition from the car crash and El in the water. Car in a lake -> El separated from her family.

Hints that Lonnie might've been involved in the car crash

In Lonnie's very first scene, there's a little bike in his house, and Jon checks his trunk. Not a good sign.

After Joyce breaks the wall with the axe, the only thing she sees is her car. Possible hint that after the car crash one of the children was taken away from the family by powers. Time powers... Tears in the fabric of time and space...

That night, when Lonnie arrives, the first thing we see is his car headlights.

Then he closes "the door" that Will used to communicate with his mom, with a hammer. As he talks about the quarry and Joyce freezing to death.

In 2x06, after they bring Will to the lab, after he screams that he feels like he's burning (Hopper is screaming too, but they're using water! Always water and fire) there's a transition to Steve's car, and the song in this scene is Hammer to Fall. In 2x09 Jon mentions Lonnie and the hammer they used to build Castle Byers.

In S4 there's another connection between Lonnie, cars, time loops and the resentment between him and Joyce. When Jon says that the cycle never ends. We see part of the conversation through the broken window of a car.

Other hints

Billy and Max

They both have many parallels with Will, and most of their scenes together take place in the car. Billy's car is actually the first thing we see.

They always fight in that car.

Billy tries to run over the kids. This reminds me of the night Will vanishes

And the scene of Billy's possession IS a parallel to the 1x01 scene. He and Will both run off the road

In 3x07, Billy almost burns alive in his car

In S4, Max confesses that she had wished her brother to die in a car accident

In 2x05, Terry shows El a police car chase!

This scene is so important. I'm working on a new theory, but I'll just say that Terry (or whoever is communicating with El) isn't just randomly switching the channels. She's telling a story. Henry's story and how El got involved.

In fact, she shows El a blonde woman ("Virginia"?/connection to the Creel and how the lab kids were created?) then the Family Feud score (a family feud, hm) A donut commercial with many identical donuts (imo, ref to the lab kids), the commercial of a Computer Supercenter (the lab/Nina/this whole experiment) and then a police chase and someone pouring coffe into a cup. I think this is a huge hint at a car crash that involved Hopper. And I don't know why else Terry would show El a police car chase tbh. Then, in 2x07, Kali calls Hopper policeman many times. A clear connection with the car chase, imo.

When El looks for the source in S3, the first thing she sees in the eye of the Mind Flayer storm is Billy's damaged car. Since Billy is paralleled to Will, this could mean that the source of everything started with a car crash and powers?

I'm also thinking about this shot in the Vecna game. It looks very similar to a shot in Benny's diner in S4. Jason in a white outfit, like Henry, Christmas lights, a police car, the letters W and E, and another car with something that looks a lot like the Mind Flayer looming over it.

And don't forget Joyce and Hopper escaping from Grigori and the engine of the police car literally exploding. And where do they find another car? At a Seven Eleven convenience store

There are many other hints, but I think these ones are the most relevant.

these aren’t really theories more than just a brief outline of how I’m sort of thinking everything will go down, but I needed to share some thoughts

I wouldn’t be surprised if the show ends on a hint that the upside down is still alive (a demobat flying, lightning in the red sky, a demodog in a trashcan or something along those lines)

honestly I’m sure that holly is being used as bait. that script maya leaked months ago (did we ever decide that was real?) mentioned kids a few times- given the many many ways vecna is compared to freddy krueger, I’m almost sure that he’s luring her (and possibly others) as bait or for strength

as far as byler goes I’m sure that they’re going to be an important topic this season (I also know that the duffers will try and keep things obvious).

I don’t think mileven will split up in a chill and non-heated argument (they clearly aren’t on speaking terms and el is mad. they’re not on the same page AT ALL. and this could just be me but if I were el, whether I loved him like that or not, to find out he didn’t at all and knew it? yeah, I’d definitely be pissed. I’m sure that they’re going to argue. bad.

will and mike are going to hopefully have some sweet scenes! they always have the emotional ones while mileven has the rushed confessions that you can hardly enjoy. I think it’ll become more obvious to the ga (the ones with media literacy) around episode five, give or take. close to the end they’ll get together. probably through an argument.

(I could talk about this all day but to keep it simple I imagine they’re going to argue and someone will say ‘why do you care so much’ ‘because I love you!’ and right then vecna will strike or something will happen and it won’t be addressed again until the end)

One good thing with strangers things is that if/when byler is endgame or cannon they will DEFINITELY show flashbacks like they always do to remind their audience how it happened it the past and how everything lead to that ending.

Trolls, princesses, clowns and elephants

This line could be a big clue. Hopper says that this whole time he's been chasing after some other kid: El, not Will.

But in S1 and S4 we see him literally chase after Sarah. So, that line could hide the truth. That this whole time Hopper has thought that the kid he's been chasing after in his memories was Sarah, but his kids are actually Will and El.

He also tells El that before meeting her he was living in a cave. When he chases after Sarah, he pretends to be a troll who wants to eat some roasted princess. In Nordic folklore, trolls live in caves. Will mentions weird flowers in a cave in 1x08 (they also mention a proud princess). And now we know that Henry vanished and wound up in Dimension X when he was a kid, and was found near a cave system in Nevada.

But there's another connection between Will, El, Sara and Hopper. Elephants.

There's a pink elephant in Jane's crib, but only in S1, when Hopper and Joyce are there. It's not there in S2.

There are yellow elephants on Sarah's pajamas. Plus clowns, wheels and acrobats.

Will was afraid of clowns when he was a kid, and there are parallels between him, Sarah and Pennywise's first victim in the IT miniseries.

S3, the scene of the keys (Will and El are the keys to save the world)

Joyce and Hopper mention their kids as they pass two boys with H's on their jackets (twin imagery and reference to Henry) and the Elephant Ears sign.
