So You Want To Be An Ally
Over the last 2 weeks, I have been fielding many white-guilt questions at work and having very interesting conversations and Zoom calls. Overall, they have been well received, but I am not sure if anything will happen once this is no longer a hot topic. I hope we keep up the momentum, but the media and Politicians and other power holders will try to silence us as quickly as possible. All of the companies realizing that #BlackLivesMatter will inevitably fade away as well. WE HAVE TO KEEP THE PRESSURE ON. So I made a list of talking points for the company that I work for, I hope they put it to use. I will begin sending this to anyone that reaches out to me to “talk” or “to see if I am ok”. While I appreciate the concern (if it’s genuine), I cannot continue being your only Black friend or the only Black person that you feel comfortable speaking to.
I saw this on Twitter recently, White privilege doesn't mean that your life hasn't been hard, it just means that the color of your skin isn't one of the things that makes it harder. I think this pretty much sums up what white people need to understand, what those people calling themselves our allies need to understand. Having Black pride & saying Black Lives Matter should not offend anyone. It does not mean that we are anti white people.
Black people are not a monolith. While we have all experienced racism in some form or another, we do not share the exact same experiences with it. To try and get an overall view of the different types of racism, you need to speak to many different Black people. Stop treating us as a collective, we are all individuals. Racism has permeated every single institution in this country. Education, Housing, Banking, Healthcare, Criminal Justice, Entertainment, etc. Racism is very much systemic, not always overt. There are also many different microaggressions that do not present as overt racism. Also, if we are going to have these discussions, please make sure that we feel safe, that we will be heard without reprimand or cynicism or disbelief. Our silence is the reason why this has gone on for so long. We want to be heard. We are no longer willing to stay invisible. Fear makes many of us stay silent, not willing to upset the status quo.
Revamp your hiring strategy/quota. People and organizations tend to conflate diversity and inclusivity. They are NOT the same. While there are many women, LGBTQIA members, Black and other People of Color, the Executives, Sales Management, and HR do not reflect this.
Conversations about race and other social justice issues are uncomfortable. Having these conversations without any Black and People of color present is pointless. Make sure you have Black people and other People of Color in any discussions you have regarding race relations and any other social justice issues. Empathy and sympathy is great, but it will not replace an actual experience.
Understand that the current state of the world has been a long time coming. George Floyd was the straw that broke the camel's back. The only difference is that everyone has a camera now and the police aren't doing themselves any favors by brutalizing everyone who is protesting police brutality.
Acknowledge your privilege. Acknowledge that the system is built to benefit you more than it does us and that it always has.
Saying "I'm not racist" isn't enough anymore. You have to be anti-racist. You have to stop the jokes, stereotypes, etc amongst your circle of friends and family members. This will be hard. But Black and Brown lives have to matter more than offending anyone that is unwilling to change.
Racism is not up to Black people and other People of Color to solve. This wasn't created or instituted by us and as we remain the "minority" in positions of power, we are unable to change it. We only have the ability to fight it, to rise up and demand change. To show that we will no longer take it. We will no longer be silent. We were all taught to be quiet and hold our feelings in to make sure that white people are comfortable. To make sure that we don’t appear threatening or angry. That is changing. Things will not go back to the way that they were.

Indianapolis Semi-Pro Football Team Wins National Championship
The very Hoosier Hurricanes invaded Homestead, Florida for last weekend's 4th once-a-year Minor League Football News (MLFN) Super Football Weekend strong winded and left with reign.
In a game dominated by defense, the Hurricanes hammered the Carolina Express 41-0 to win MLFN's SOCIAL MEDIA PACKAGE National Championship.
"To reach this point so quickly is incredible, " talked about Hurricanes head coach John Starlin. "I really feel like a proud biological father to all of those guys. "
While the 'Canes' offense was strong, the actual play of their defense was dominant. The 'Canes forced eight turnovers and controlled the Express' offense, which towered over them dimensions and power. Early in the contest, it looked like the Express was going to use their Power I offensive attack to run right down the particular throat of the 'Canes' defense. When the Express were forced to pitch, however , the speedy Hurricane secondary was able to take the game away. The best of four Express interceptions was thrown on that opening drive, and then the Hurricanes never looked back.
"They were a tough team to scout, however , I really think they underestimated our speed, " said Starlin. "Other coaches from their league were able to help me out as far as scouting, but I knew as solid as our defense was that we could play with everybody. "
Staying with the defensive theme of the game, linebacker Deon Smith was initially awarded the game's MVP for his 12 tackle performance. The guy also intercepted a pass and forced a fumble.
The AA nationalized title was the perfect end to a season that was already storybook for those Indianapolis squad, founded by co-owners Starlin, David Day, and AMERICAN FOOTBAL wide receiver Reggie Wayne. In their first year of existence, typically the Hurricanes were awarded Best New Team in the Midwest by MLFN after finishing 13-1 in the Ohio Valley คนบ้าบอล League (OVFL). Most of their OVFL season finished with a Super Bowl victory over the Charlotte (MI) Roughriders, 21-0.
"This has really been a dream season for us, " said Starlin.
Starlin's players have also won numerous accolades from MLFN. Four 'Canes were honored with Midwest All-American status: Derrick Ellis was some sort of honorable mention Midwest All-American at running back, wide receiver Jeff Penick made second team Midwest All-American, and Corey Crumpton and even Charles Avant were first and second team at defensive to come back, respectively.
Ellis, a former "Mr. Indiana" while playing running to incorporate financing high school, was also named Running Back of the Year in the Midwest District by MLFN.
The Hurricanes will return to the OVFL next months and compete to become the first ever back-to-back champion in league heritage, a feat no team has accomplished in 40 years of competitiveness.
1 . Does The Football Betting Master System Really Make Money?
From it's results so far, it is clear that it has been generating some consistent profitable trades during the months that it is used. In the guide itself, the system is split up into steps that make it easy for anyone, regardless of their prior betting feel, to be able to follow and profit from the guide.
2 . What Is The Football Gambling on Master Guide All About?
This football bets guide has been perfected once 2 years. Its owners are also offering the service of providing tactics to their subscribers, especially for those who do not have the time to run the methods through regularly. The owner of this system has also revealed proof of how he managed to generate above 800 percent profits during his 2 years of using his own gambling on method.
Is The Football Betting Master System Really Worth the Money paying the Subscription Fees?
The main guide costs about £37 in total to invest in, with the option to join a £9. 95 per month membership that gives you email tips and what to bet if you do not have the time to run the system yourself to find your bets manually. In my opinion, you should still read through the VIRTUAL guide even if you are only intending to follow the email tips so that you can understand how it works and have the confidence and discipline to follow the tips. In addition , you will also increase complete access to a blog that is always updated with the latest baseball news and the coming 2010 World Cup.

DIVERSITY IN SEATTLE THEATRE, SEPT/OCT 2017
Here we go.
1. The Earth Shakes, HERON Ensemble, Samantha Cooper, dir. Linnea Ingalls. If I remember correctly, this play is loosely based on Antony and Cleopatra; it is diversely-cast, and as is characteristic of this ensemble - they inhabit that word to its fullest definition – the cast switches characters between scenes, like a relay race that crosses all boundaries of race and gender.
2. The Who and the What, ArtsWest, Ayad Akhtar, dir. Samip Raval. Race-specific. This play is about a Pakistani father and his American-born daughters. I don’t think the actors were necessarily Pakistani; I believe they did a lot of work with Pratidhwani - who co-produced - and with Pakistani consultants to achieve more of a cultural understanding of the characters beyond what is merely in the script.
3. The Odyssey, Seattle Rep, Todd Almond and Lear deBessonnet, dir. Marya Sea Kaminski. Diversely-cast, across race, across gender, across age, across ability, pulling a cast of a hundred (or so it felt) from all over Seattle, led by a handful of professional actors.
4. Why We Have A Body, Strawberry Theatre Workshop, Claire Chafee, dir. Rhonda Soikowski. White or white-presenting, as far as I can tell.
5. Dragon Lady, Intiman, Sara Porkalob, dir. Andrew Russell. Holy mother of god. I have seen this in one form or another at least five times. I could see it another five times. This is about identity, about family, about pride, about strength, about poverty, about pain, about the damage you can do in ways that cross generations, about how you don’t know you’re repeating past mistakes - your own and those of others - until you’ve made them, about how you don’t know what it will take to break a cycle until you’ve broken it.
6. Teh Internet is Serious Business, WET, Tim Price, dir. Wayne Rawley. As far as I can tell, both race-specific and non-race-specific, and casted accordingly.
7. Blues for Mister Charlie, The Williams Project, James Baldwin, dir. Ryan Guzzo Purcell. Race-specific, casted accordingly. Flawless. This is one of my favorite plays of all time. James Baldwin’s writing is diamond-sharp and so relevant it makes you feel like you are on fire. Loosely based on the murder of Emmett Till, it is dedicated to Medgar Evers, his widow and children, and “to the memory of the dead children of Birmingham.” It broke my heart every time Richard, the man whose murder at the beginning of the play sets everything in motion, calls his father Meridian “daddy.”
8. Life: An Adaptation an Adaptation, Filament Collab Lab, Nathan Brockett, dir. Nathan Brockett/choreo. Sophia Franzella. As far as I can tell, white or white-presenting.
9. Gemini Season (reading), NCTC Pipeline, Nelle Tankus, dir. Emily Harvey. This is a play about a trans woman and most likely should be and was casted accordingly.
10. I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, Book-It, Myra Platt/Malika Oyetimein/Maya Angelou, dir. Malika Oyetimein. Race-specific, casted accordingly. The white characters in this story – there are necessarily white characters in this story – are played by the black ensemble, who drew white gloves over their hands to signify their character’s whiteness. This sent a shiver up my spine.
11. King of the Yees, ACT, Lauren Yee, dir. Desdemona Chiang. Race-specific – that is, Asian – and casted accordingly. This is a Chinese-American story. Whether the actors are Chinese-American or not isn’t necessarily important to me. They were hilarious as fuck. I cried laughing. Ray Tagavilla is one of my favorite people on the planet.
12. Journey of the Saint (reading), eSe Teatro, Cesar de Maria, dir. Rose Cano, race-specific and casted accordingly.
13. Onerus, Café Nordo, Terry Podgorski, dir. Erin Brindley. Diversely-cast, as they usually do.
14. Julius Caesar, Seattle Shakes, William Shakespeare, dir. George Mount. Diversely-cast.
15. Burning Doors, OTB/Belarus Free Theatre with Marya Alyokhina, dir. Nicolai Khalezin/Natalia Kaliada. White, or white-presenting, that is, Russian.
16. Las Mariposas y Los Muertos, Forward Flux, Benjamin Benne, dir. Pilar O’Connell. Race-specific, casted accordingly.
17. No More Sad Things, Forward Flux, Hansol Jung, dir. Wesley Fruge. Diversely-cast.
18. Sycorax, 18th/Union, Y York, dir. Mark Lutwak. Race-specific solo work, casted accordingly. I could listen to Demene Hall forever. This is a play that is, on the surface, about Sycorax, the mother of Caliban, who is mentioned in The Tempest but does not appear. Actually this is about the pain of blackness, as a child, as a girl, as a woman, as a lover, as a mother. This is a play about innocence and love and betrayal.
19. Go Dog Go! SCT, Allison Gregory/Steven Dietz, dir. Allison Gregory/Steven Dietz. Diversely-cast. Well, I mean, they’re playing DOGS. By the way, this show is aimed at small children.
20. Pride and Prejudice, Seattle Rep, Kate Hamill, dir. Amanda Dehnert. Diversely-cast.
21. The World of Extreme Happiness, SPT, Frances Ya-Chu Cowhig, dir. Desdemona Chiang. Race-specific, that is, Asian, casted accordingly. Again, don’t ask me about whether the actors are Chinese or not, or half-white or not. That’s not something I care about at all. This one hurts my heart, for reasons I have discussed elsewhere, and I love it.
22. Beware the Terror of Gaylord Manor, ACT, BenDeLaCreme. Diversely-cast. I mean, it’s a drag burlesque cabaret, basically.
23. Ragtime, 5th Ave, Terrence McNally/Stephen Flaherty/Lynn Ahrens, dir. Peter Rothstein. Race-specific, casted accordingly. I might have side-eyed the Wealthy White Savior Lady plot line a tiny bit.
24. Coriolanus: Fight Like a Bitch, Rebel Kat, William Shakespeare/Katherine Jett, dir. Emily Penick. All-female Shakespeare, pronouns changed, diversely-cast. Holy crap, this was stunning.
25. Happy, Happy, Happy, Macha, Jenn Ruzumna/Lisa Every, dir. Amy Poisson. White or white-presenting.
26. The Crucible, ACT, Arthur Miller, dir. John Langs. Diversely-cast. The only race-specific bit was the casting of Tituba, who appears in the beginning and then disappears. I read today that Langs had originally cast Shermona Mitchell as both Tituba and Judge Hathorne, but could not overcome the restrictions of the Miller estate. At the last minute, Reginald André Jackson was added to the cast as Hathorne. This had to be devastating. Also devastating was watching the scene where Mary Warren confronts Abigail Williams in court. To watch a room of people believe a lying white girl (Abigail) over a trying-to-do-the-right-thing black girl (Mary) reminded me of a line from James Baldwin’s Blues for Mister Charlie: “You can’t call a white woman a liar, even if you’re a white man.”
27. Last Stop on Lilac Street, Annex, Kelleen Conway Blanchard, dir. Keira McDonald. Mostly white or white-presenting, except for Alaji. Maybe I should stop calling plays “diversely-cast” if they have only one actor of color. Argh, do I need to scroll back through the last 10 months and re-edit everything?
28. Burn This, Theatre22, Lanford Wilson, dir. Corey McDaniel. Diversely-cast. Well, I mean, again that thing where you have one actor of color and everyone else white or white-presenting. What should my cutoff be? 25%? 40%? 10%?
29. Mirror-Mirror (reading), Pork-Filled Productions, Lamar Legend, dir. Aaron Jin. Diversely-cast. This is part of a weeklong series of readings of new plays by playwrights of color, dramaturged and directed and performed mostly by artists of color, presented by Pork-Filled Productions, running at Theatre Off Jackson through Saturday.
30. Sings the Hits, Theatre22, Scotto Moore, dir. Katie McKellar. Diversely-cast.

Planting in a Post-Wild World: At Home & Beyond
Documenting wildlife can be mighty tricky, especially when the subject—like a hummingbird—is so tiny.
But this summer, Carie Wade spotted a hummingbird in her nest on a bluff at Canyon Lake.
Carie returned again and again to quietly record the unfolding new life. These are just a few pictures from her remarkable photographic story.
Thank you, Carie, for sharing with us!
As wildlife habitat diminishes, how can we create ecologically-sensitive, biodiverse gardens? Thomas Rainer, Phyto Studio landscape architect based in D.C., is committed to “exploring the intersection of ecology, culture and design.”
This week, Thomas joins John Hart Asher, Senior Environmental Designer at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, who’s filling in for Tom Spencer.
Since they’re both dedicated to attractive ecological design that invites our engagement and restores wildlife habitat, they explore concepts from Thomas’ book, Planting in a Post-Wild World: Designing Plant Communities for Resilient Landscapes. Important to them both is our own health along with that of the environment.
Many thanks to Pam Penick, who featured Thomas in her recent Garden Spark talk series, and suggested this opportunity for CTG!
On tour: In Dripping Springs, Leah and Jon Gillum bring together home, family, and habitat with their children, Grant and Nora.
In 2013, when they bought the home and 10 acres of native plant habitat along the Jackson branch of Onion Creek, they wanted sunlight to grow gardens together as a family.
Another attraction was acres of wilderness to watch and learn from wildlife of all kinds; now some of their favorite family stories.
The original owners, Peggy and Jim Budd, built the home in the 90s. Jim, an architect, sited it for minimal impact and to catch soft light indoors.
Peggy, former Volunteer Director at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, laid out the original backbone with many native plants.
On the sloping lot, they built a dry creek bed to control flooding water near the house.
Leah and Jon added plants to the swale and berm design.
Jon planted native silver ponyfoot (Dichondra argentea) that looks like flowing water between rare but often intense rains.
The Gillums are water-resourceful always, but especially now since they’re on a well. Every plant must be able to thrive on limited water. The decomposed granite path along the front allows rainwater to infiltrate and bluebonnets to seed themselves.
Native wildflowers in all seasons pepper the fields beyond. Leah and Jon seed more every year, but many burst naturally from the soil when conditions are right.
Architect Jim Budd completed his Texas farmhouse persona with a vintage Aeromotor windmill from a farm outside Mason.
Since deer share the garden, Jon learned the hard way that any addition he makes must be resistant or tolerant to chomping.
He tells us, “It’s taken a lot of trial and error to build gardens that blend in with the wildscape. And I think one of the ways that we’ve done that is that we use a lot of rocks. We can talk about plants that we think we know how to grow, but we grow rocks really well!”
They don’t fence against deer except in two areas. One is their organic vegetable garden where hog panel and rustic cedar posts blend right in.
Leah built the raised beds and shoveled yards of soil and compost. They made the paths wide to easily maneuver carts of compost and mulch each season. The whole family pitches in to plant and harvest.
To feed hummingbirds and other pollinators, native coral honeysuckle clambers up.
Another fence protects the courtyard garden, visible from several rooms indoors. In our video, you’ll see the clever sliding gate design that Leah and her dad devised.
Their challenge here was alternating dramatic sun and shade along with a design that’s pleasing to view inside and out.
Since they wanted a small, low-care pond to attract wildlife close up, Leah engineered the stock tank pump design.
They wanted a bench to sit and watch, so Grant, then five or six, helped Leah build and paint a bright red perch. Nora was too little then, but she gets to build the next one!
One of their most special plants is one that Peggy Budd planted—Shasta daisies that were a gift from Lady Bird Johnson.
From the farmhouse-style veranda in back, they watch their own reality show of birds, deer, coyotes, foxes, possums and skunks.
Benevolent native plants document the calendar through ever-changing patterns.
Confident hummingbirds, after feeding on native plants, are happy to grab a bonus drink with the family.
Since deer AREN’T so eager to join them, the Gillums include tasty temptations in their step-side container garden.
The front yard’s the family playground where their games include watching the wildlife. So, they haven’t manicured or cleared brush from under the oaks, since that’s where deer nurture their fawns.
As lawyers, Leah and Jon log many hours behind keyboards, so they make family time outdoors a priority. Problem-solvers both, they bring two dimensions to home and garden collaboration.
Actually, make that four. Grant and Nora’s youthful voices and perspectives lead the future.
Watch now! Thanks for stopping by! See you next week, Linda

I have never been depressed enough to take up the game, but they say you get so sore at yourself you forget to hate your enemies. – Will Rogers • I had a wonderful experience on the golf course today. I had a hole in nothing. Missed the ball and sank the divot. – Don Adams • I have a tip that can take 5 strokes off anyone’s golf game. It’s called an eraser. – Arnold Palmer • I know I am getting better at golf because I am hitting fewer spectators. – Gerald R. Ford • I like to play golf. Actually, the Lord answers my prayers everywhere except on the course. – Billy Graham • I regard golf as an expensive way of playing marbles. – Gilbert K. Las Ramblas Golf Society Results for w/c 15.4.19
As I strolled down Magnolia Drive to the clubhouse on Monday morning I began to wonder how many times Tiger Woods had played in a ‘Yellow Peril’; today’s competition format. Not many I reckoned! With 145 points our winners were Annemarie Weisheit, Benedicte Kruse, Terry Field and Nigel Price. Certainly worthy of a mention was the team that scored 15 points on the 10th hole! This consisted of Bryan Neal, Paul Brown, Marleen Billen and our new boy, Brian Levy. Surely a new record? Unfortunately, the nearest some of our members came to emulating their heroes was to stick their ball in the water on the 9th! It was a real family affair in Wednesday’s Club Championship Stableford (round four of six.) Not only did John and Ellen Drakesmith both card a ‘2’ (along with Ron Phipps and Benedicte Kruse) but Ellen won the day with 37 points just beating John on countback! In third, with 36 points, was Pat Cassidy, again just winning on countback from Mike Chapman. No Friday report you’ll be sad to learn as I’m away! Full service should be resumed next week. This week’s quote goes to Harvey Penick who observed ‘the woods are full of long drivers.’ Pues, hasta la semana que viene Peter Reffell

One of the most amazing aspects about the $109 million Math+Science Complex at Mesa Greater education is actually not aspect in the exact residence at all. Four learning scenery increase learning and teaching beyond the classroom areas to the outside of the facility. These specialized places were created by Mesa Greater education staff to enhance training and teaching experience.
Located in the regional center of Mesa Greater education and together with the main Perspective, three scenery including the four places of the world that talk about San Diego’s Mediterranean and beyond sea atmosphere enhance college student learning and show eye-catching standard mineral water maintenance gardening. In the northern main courtyard, a unique Geo-Garden provides silent study position and stone components illustrate the earth’s stages. In 2015, a new Mesa college student club, TerraMesa, the college’s Environmental Stewardship Board, and Features workers improved Mesa’s Organic Garden. Situated in the reasons around the P100/200 Components off the main school at the corner of Marlesta Drive and Genesee Opportunity, the organic lawn offers n outdoor learning lab and a treatment position to connect with nature, and opportunities for major learning. Geo Garden
Located in the courtyard of the Math+ Technological innovation Complex, the Geo Garden comes with a main lawn position and three six-foot high stone surfaces segments showing the earth’s stages. It consists of two main educational components, such as a series the three free-standing, custom stratigraphic areas and approximately 24 boulder-sized stone examples.
Geo Garden components demonstrate important initiatives and spatial connections among various stone components exposed throughout greater San John. Both beach and national stone units are revealed, together including over 200 million years of geologic time. The stratigraphic areas include pigmented, ruined concrete included with pieces from actual San John stone components. Each surfaces is annotated with a illustrative metal oral oral plaque.
The stone examples have been placed at ideal places around the courtyard for example common examples of all three stone types, such as igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic, as well as common geologic features such as nutrient blood vessels, errors, and fossilized sand mountains. Numerous common rock-forming nutritional value are also revealed.
The Geo Garden represents the successful results a public-private collaboration among Mesa Geology Instructors Don Barrie and Ray Rector, the regional concrete specialist (T.B. Penick & Sons), and the regional scenery architectural firm (Wimmer, Yamada, and Caughey).
Classes that apply the Geo-Garden include: Physical Geology (GEOL 100) Physical Geology Lab (GEOL 101) Earth Technological innovation (GEOL 104) The World through Time (GEOL 111) Physical Technological innovation (PHYN 100) MicroClimate Garden
The scenery around the external places of the Math+Science Complex were designed to enhance college student learning and to show eye-catching standard mineral water maintenance gardening.
The scenery along the process between the M+S Creating and the LRC features regional local vegetation, common of the plant taken over surroundings consist of the southern part of California and northern Baja and other Mediterranean and beyond sea surroundings. There are vegetation and low herbage and flourishing herbaceous vegetation. They are used to show students to recognize regional types and the options that help them endure so well in our low standard mineral water atmosphere. Some of these regional vegetation can be found placed at the rear of the exact residence and the vegetation around it are mostly coast live oak – one of the few vegetation that grow naturally in this region.
On the the southern part of, warm aspect, experiencing the G Creating and along the school Perspective, are vegetation from some of the other four places of the world that talk about our Mediterranean and beyond sea atmosphere with its light temperature ranges, low rain fall and winter down flows. These vegetation, having developed in a similar atmosphere, talk about many features with our regional species: small hard leads to, uncertain leads to, clean leads to. They provide an excellent example of convergent progress.
On the the southern part of aspect are placed some northern California types and some African-american irises that can be gathered for use in labs. In the back are various Mediterranean and beyond sea vegetation such as clean increased and a single cork oak plant, the waste of which is used as a alternative resource.
Lastly, to the western of the G Creating and placed by our own Mesa features workers long before the M+S building was built is an amazing wilderness lawn filled with palo ecologico, exotic, regional vegetation and spring flowers, such as our state flower: the California poppy. This position perfectly increases the rest of the California types and is also used in teaching.
Classes that apply the Mediterranean and beyond sea Landscapes include: BIOL250 - Guide to Botany BIOL100 - Organic History & Environmental Biology The scenery are used some by non-majors and levels in BIO107 and BIO210B.
