Okay, something inspired by a John character analysis because it hurt me to the depths of my soul: John is "a funny guy" and he's "nice", but he ultimately got so desensitized and disconnected from his emotions by everything going to shit and everyone dying before his very eyes all the time that his emotional response to things that matter is neutral at best and fake as fuck at worst. It's not like he doesn't care about people, but it's easier for him to sever all ties with everyone rather than process that maybe he's not doing so well all alone, maybe he's hurt and yes, his friends might have someone more important in their lives to be there for him, but it's also not their job, and he's not asking for help, so he pretends that everything's fine and he doesn't need any help, he might even believe that.
Dirk on the other hand comes off as cold and calculating, or at least he's trying very hard to seem like some unfeeling ringleader pulling the strings, but he cares so much, he's passionate despite trying to dismiss his own interests as "irony" sometimes and he loves his friends so much he kills himself for them, he falls hard because he has no frame of reference to what being loved even supposed to feel like and gets heartbroken easily because of it. Dirk gets too attached to people because of his isolated upbringing and he wants the best for them even when no one asks, even when he's wrong about what "the best" actually is.
Point is, Dirk has a lot of love to give and John deserves to receive a lot of love after everything he's gone through, but they're equally bad at properly expressing feelings and receiving them, so It obviously wouldn't be a smooth sailing. It's a meeting of unstoppable force in Dirk and an immovable object in John, but the point when they meet might be the balance between Dirk's "too much" care and John's "too little" care, and they can teach each other how to hold onto and let go respectively.
