Album Review - Ethel Cain's 'Perverts'

My text reviews for albums are very short, typically, but Perverts is not really the type of project you can do that for.

Perverts is very much a release that calls into question what you even enjoy about music at all. Drone, dark ambient, post rock, basically anything that drags like this are genres I am historically enemies with. I think they're overrated anywhere on the internet where music is discussed, I think they are pretty much the face of like modern indie-pretentiousness. While I don't tend to enjoy listening to music like this, my real problem is that almost no one in real life seems to enjoy it. Obviously genres like rap, pop, jazz, rock, metal, "indie", house, even if you want to get into instrumental stuff you have like classical, d&b / instrumental dance, lofi hip-hop, these genres all have the point going for them that you can play this music in a group of people or with your average friend and expect to enjoy them in a way that people normally enjoy music. Obviously there are exceptions to this rule, I know there is like a post rock scene and there are people who go to drone shows, but people do not sing and dance to this music, it is not enjoyed in the way people typically enjoy songs and albums.

Godspeed You, Black Emperor (a post-rock band) put out an album last year about the crisis in Gaza. It was totally instrumental except for one poem, and to my understanding leaned mostly on representing the messages they were trying to convey using the patterns of the instruments. To me, this album was boring and meant nothing. I know that if you are listening to it knowing what the themes are and keeping them in mind, you will see how they are represented within the instrumentation, but if you re-released one of their other albums under this name and said it was about gaza, people would probably be able to pick up similar themes and adapt their interpretations of the album to what they are hearing. From one angle, that's kind of beautiful, an abstract and amorphous form of musicianship that can be projected on to and molded to fit whatever the listener believes it can be about. But on the other, it's simply meaningless static. When I listened to that album last year, I simply wasn't down for the task of sitting there, staring at the wall, and thinking as hard as I could about how what I was hearing meant about Gaza for 54 minutes and lo and behold the album felt kind of like meaningless fuzz to me. It's not a work I have a desire to return to. I have a lot of like, artistic respect for that project, it's a very good piece of art, and I'm sure if I had engaged in the wallpaper exercise it would have moved me to tears. But it's simply not what I look for in music.

Furthermore, you have releases like Floating Points' cascade, a kind of ambient house album, similarly spacey and draggy, but I don't think it's really supposed to mean anything. Floating points is just kind of an artist who makes music that sounds unique so that it can be music, there's no like intended theming. I think a lot of albums in the ambient / drone genres are made in similar forms and for similar reasons. I didn't like cascade, and I don't tend to like albums like this, they need to kind of have some more color to keep me engaged. This is also very subjective, even moreso than most music. I love ambient when it kind of scratches the right itch for me: C418's Minecraft Volume alpha or Jobones' Experiment Unsuccessful, but it's kind of a guessing game of what scratches that itch, and when it has that color(tm). Swag, even.

Ethel Cain's previous album American Teenager is one of the best albums I have ever listened to, so undeniable in its quality and importance that it kind of breaks the scale I usually rate music on and is the only 9/10 album I hate listening to. Even in the face of classics, you cannot ignore the authentic and masterful representations of devastation, desperation, perversion, exploitation, and abuse that live within the walls of Preacher's Daughter as a body of work. It just straight up beams you in the face with despair and depravity. OK Computer is an album you can sit and listen to and move on from. Preacher's Daughter WILL fuck up your day and there's nothing you can do except for not listen to it. I've had days where I get messed up because I just THINK about this album. It takes a genre that is typically sweet and singable and carefully distorts it around itself until it's unrecognizable, its return to form near the album's end nearly a reminder of the purity and innocence that has been defiled over the course of the album's runtime, making sure to still pack instrumental swells and crescendos to assure a strong impact on the listener. I think you could make a good case for it being in the fifty objectively greatest albums of all time and I mean that.

Perverts is a great album, and in contrast to preacher's daughter, cuts straight to the chase. What perverts greatest strength is, in my opinion, is that it's drone that objectively, decidedly means something. Another great strength of perverts is that, sonically, it starts out in about the deepest, darkest, most twisted mood that Preacher's Daughter ever reaches period. This isn't necessarily a good or bad thing, it's just a different approach. Perverts, almost playfully, cold opens into abject despair. You look at this album, and it's called "Perverts," it's by Ethel Cain, the cover art is very blatantly harrowing, it's painfully obvious that it's as dark, destructive, and soul-wrenching as a piece of art can be, or at least that's what it's going for. And while I'm sure typical fans of drone and dark ambient would be quite happy with a piece of work that just kind of hums and buzzes for 90 minutes, I'm much happier with what we got.

The vocals, be they sung or spoken word, really put this album together. Yes, it's possible to stare into static and form it into shapes yourself, but when themes and imagery are called into mind by Cain's wretched muttering, she guides the listener into taking away a more complete experience. It's certainly not phoned in, but I, as a listener who typically is not into non-melodic, stretched out instrumental passages (aka normal, I really hope that does not sound condescending hahaha), take richer meaning and impact away from Perverts than I ever could from a more abstract or minimalist piece. It's not even that the more varied instrumentation and lyrical speeches and diversions provide more that isn't drone for me to listen to, but they tell me what's actually going on in the music so that I have no choice but to see horrors of a specific kind in the static of the drone passages without making the active and voluntary choice to focus on thinking about a certain thing. This force, this compulsion, is part of what makes this such an authentically punishing listening experience.

The artistry on display on Perverts is just super impressive, and it's awesome to hear Cain show off her talents and creativity. Some of the best and most overwhelming moments for me were Pulldrone's speech, Amber Waves euphoric yet devastating crescendo, and damn, Etienne is straight up optimistic. Despite appearances, Perverts does not spend the entirety of its runtime in despair - like on Preacher's Daughter, cain makes room for the contrast between optimism and pessimism, euphoria and pain, heaven and hell. Etienne is a seriously amazing track, showing how the deepest depths of depression can still find light within. I love love love the lyrics on it, they are incredibly meaningful and inspirational. Amber Waves is a highlight as I previously mentioned, and it's so damn refreshing to hear Cain's beautiful, lush singing voice as the album closes out. It's an amazing, bittersweet, and appropriately, refreshingly human ending.

Perverts is my favorite drone album I have heard, hell my favorite in any of these draggy, instrumental based genres, it means a lot despite saying less. Yes, there were moments of this album that annoyed or bored me, but they were few and far between, at least compared to what I expected. I think existing fans of drone and dark ambient are really getting into this thing and it's kind of destroying them. I... love that for them, I guess. I bet if I were privy to that way of consuming music, if I were more willing to engage with this format of material, I would also get more out of it than I did. There are just people out there more primed to 'get' this than me, and that's fine.

Perverts is great (7/10). It's extremely well made, I'm glad it exists, and it made me thoroughly and deeply enjoy a type of music I have a personal vendetta against. Bravo Ethel.

I'm sorry this review was more about how I feel about certain types of music than about the work itself, but that's just what I felt like I wanted to say with regards to this project. Maybe just check out the work itself.

Memory Bullets:

‘Fuji’s account’ – Myself, Inoue-chan, Eito-san, Kimura-san, Katou-san and Norman-san ended up in the mine shaft which as we were about to leave, Norman-san cut the elevator’s wire with a garden sheer and we ended up deeper into the Mine Shaft.

‘Mine Shaft’ – My group ended up in a mine shaft that had various of dangerous items and even information we weren’t suppose to see, likely hidden by Hamoponi himself – it even had things like guns, bombs, alcohol and things that could lead to murder if not careful.

‘Hana’s account’ – It seems that Hana-san, Masa-san, Miwa-san, Kita-san, Hayashi-san and Rai-kun all got across the mountain trail, seems that Hayashi-san and Miwa-san decided to stay behind while the remaining 4 went to the Radio Tower, which they contacted Future Foundation. However, as they were making there way back which Hana-san discover a cabin; she, Masa-san and Rai-kun all went to go check it out while Kita-san went on ahead which after exploring the cabin they heard an explosion and came back quickly.

‘Jobon’s account’ – Kita-san mention he was heading on the trial which he heard the explosion which he came back and saw Hayashi-san’s body and Norman-san who was there for some reason which he mutter he aim for the wrong person and ask Kita-san to shoot him.

‘Jobon’s autospy’ – Seems that Hayashi-san was alive for a few moments when we arrive despite her legs being blown off but did die from the shock of the bomb while Norman-san had died pretty instantly from the gun shot wound.

‘Miwa’s account’ – It seems that Miwa-san wanted to speak with Hayashi-san about something since she only trusted her however, it seems that Hayashi-san notice the bomb which is to protect Miwa-san which exploded and Miwa-san fell into the river which the current was so fast she ended up where we were.

‘2 Blacken Rule’ – It seems if there are 2 Blackens then it’s first come, first serve and unless the killer took matters into there own hands then that person is allow to stay.

‘Mine Entrance and Exits’ – Those of us that were deeper in the mine shaft made an exit and ended up near a river.

‘Grenade Bomb’ – This appears to be he bomb that Norman-san use to cause the explosion and was his weapon, it seems there is even a safety pin as well.

‘Grandmother’s Will’ – It seems that there was a will left by what look to be the Shizen Resort’s Owner which seems to be addressed to her granddaughter, as it read the following;

‘As for the one I am planning to give the Shizen Resort, I have decided to give it to my granddaughter – As she is to attend Hope’s Peak Academy and I wish for her to run it better then I ever could see all her hard work… I couldn’t be prouder, especially since she took interest in what I gain my gold metal from back in the day so… I hope that you do well.’

‘Shizen Resort Owner’ – It seems the current owner of the Shizen Resort Owner is the Granddaughter of the old one. Not Hamoponi as we thought it was and the current one is a girl and is a Hope’s Peak Student.

‘Ryoko’s known family’ – It seems that Hayashi-san has no known live family members which it seems all of them died on a ship and she was the sole survivor at a young age, she ended up in a raft for a few days until she ended up on an island survive there as well meaning Hayashi-san does not have any known living family member.

CLASS TRIAL START!

Hamoponi: Seeing as I’ve explained the rules, I won’t need to explain them again, in any case – argue your points and explain what had happen.

Kobayashi Eito: Damn, I… honestly wasn’t expecting to be here in a day, huh?

Esumi Masa: Well, I had it happen before where we ended up in another Class Trial pretty quickly but regardless… I guess since we are here, we got to figure out what happen.

Kimura Tomoe: You mean figure out who killed who? We already got that Norman-kun killed Ryoko-chan and in return Norman-kun got killed by Jobon-kun, right?

Kita Jobon: Well, that’s what I’m getting from this as well…

Esumi Masa: While yes we get that but we have to also understand the motive, why did Norman-san wanted to kill; there had to be a reason why he went to kill…

Nakahara Rai: Ah yes, what shock his bloodlust into hyper mode!

Mori Miwa: I mean whatever that lowly pervert had in mind, it had to be for some in decedent reason, correct?

Kobayashi Eito: Then how about we talk about one part… how did Norman-san end up there? That’s the part that confuses me the most…

I… have to agree, we have to see who was with who and what they were doing so I better take a look at all accounts to understand the situation so let’s start of with the following…

Okamoto Fuji: > Fuji’s account, I got it!

Okamoto Fuji: Well let’s start off with Norman-san’s whereabouts – he was with myself, Eito-san, Kimura-san, Inoue-chan and Katou-san…

Kimura Tomoe: I do recall that and we call all attest to that one…

Katou Doi: Yep I can say the same as well!

Kobayashi Eito: So I guess we can make it clear that he was with us, he even cut us off as well actually…

Esumi Masa: cut you off…? Wait, where did you all end up at?

Inoue Sunako: Well, we fell in a place that we fell into but could never get up, it was a difficult journey that it happens twice…

Esumi Masa: …

Inoue Sunako: Huh? Did I say something weird…

Esumi Masa: …Nothing, anyway we were separated from your group; we better figure out where you guys ended up and how Norman-san ended up there.

Hm… seems Masa-san has been acting odd as well, wonder what happen? Well, never mind that – I need to tell them where we ended up…

Class Debate – START!

Esumi Masa: Counting where you six ended up and Norman-san came out of nowhere, …

Esumi Masa: You need to <tell us the location> of this place right now.

Kimura Tomoe: Well for one thing, (it was dark and we needed lanturns) which Eito-kun turn them on…

Kobayashi Eito: Yep along with (pretty cold and rocky) as well, so It was cold and damp.

Inoue Sunako: There was even (a deeper part of the place that we discover as well!) So we just ended up in that place.

Katou Doi: Yep, we sure discover a lot of (in there, likely hidden by Hamoponi himself!) So likely Norman-kun found something that set him off…

Esumi Masa: I see then… <can you all tell me what this place is> then?

Hamoponi: Well yes, that place is meant to keep all possession that could pose a threat… I really should of chosen a better location next time…

Hamasaki Hana: So, you ended up there? Then how did you get out? I mean there looks to be one entrance after all…

Kobayashi Eito: Well uh, about that… we made our own exit actually…

Mori Miwa: Ah right – I was in such a state of shock I nearly blank out… how did you all end up there?

Well… how we ended up there is simple…

Okamoto Fuji: > Mine Entrance and Exits, I got it!

Okamoto Fuji: It seems we discover an exit which was cover in rocks that with teamwork we actually made an exit and found out we ended up near a river.

Kita Jobon: Ah so you ended up at the bottom of the mountain, that would explain your sudden appearance then… Norman-san ended up near the entrance as well?

Nakahara Rai: Hold on then what about Mori-san? She clearly was with them when we got there so how did she end up with them.

Mori Miwa: I had my reasons to appear in that location and honestly it’s easy…

Hamasaki Hana: Oh yeah, you were with Ryoko-san the last time I saw you, you wanted to talk with her for some reason… what was it for? Plus I notice you were soak – did you fall into the snow or something?

Katou Doi: Maybe she was playing in it or something?

Mori Miwa: Clearly not, I’m too old for that sort of thing!

Inoue Sunako: Oh c’mon, you can never be too old for anything, that sounds like such a dumb excuse if I ever heard one – that one boy in my old class kept using it all the time!

Seems the others are trying to figure the reason why Miwa-san ended up with us… seems I’ll need to attest for her account then…

Hamasaki Hana: So we know for sure is that Miwa-san was with Ryoko-san then…

Hamasaki Hana: How <did Miwa-san end up with Fuji-san and the others> then?

Kita Jobon: I <didn’t recall seeing her at all> so she must have been somewhere else,…

Esumi Masa: Yeah she was <even with you guys so it’s really weird to me> how she ended at the bottom of the mountain…

Nakahara Rai: Maybe she got <struck by lighting> like I did?

Okamoto Fuji: Actually, I can testify for Miwa-san – we did come across her when we hear the explosion which then suddenly, she appears which her clothes look burn and she was soaking wet, so she must of gotten into the river by accident.

Mori Miwa: Exactly, I even recall Ryoko-chan jumping in the way to protect me… I really wish I could thank her after what I say…

Hamasaki Hana: Oh yeah, you wanted to speak with her about something… right?

Mori Miwa: Yes, she… I spoke with her for a moment regarding some matters actually…

Mori Miwa’s flashback:

I… don’t remember much regarding what happen after but I do remember some bits…

Hayashi Ryoko: Hm, I’m surprise you didn’t go with them… I figure you want to be around Jobon-san…

Mori Miwa: Honestly – I don’t think I’d be that useful anyway plus I wanted to speak with you… regarding your relationship with Jobon-kun.

Hayashi Ryoko: Hm? My relationship… you have a problem with it?

Mori Miwa: Well maybe but… I wasn’t sure why but I guess I was surprise with how you 2 gotten pretty close, I guess the resort is pretty good for couples and… I couldn’t help but notice some of them, even Eito-kun and Tomoe-chan, Fuji-chan and Rai-kun and now… you 2.

Hayashi Ryoko: I see and you think the same is happening to me and Jobon-san, correct?

Mori Miwa: Yes – I guess what I’m trying to say is… that I think you should go for him if you want.

Hayashi Ryoko: Really? You were pining after him ever since we got here so I figure you want to start a rivalry with me…

Mori Miwa: No, that be too childish for my taste and besides I could see you 2 sharing similar life experiences so… I think maybe you should be with him in fact… it’s even how my parents met, you see I-.

Hayashi Ryoko: Move…

Mori Miwa: Huh, what are you-?

Hayashi Ryoko: MOVE!

As then I suddenly got push out of the way and then an explosion went off and I was thrown over the cliff and fell into the water current… it was so fast too that I ended up near a valley which strangely enough Fuji-chan and the others were there…

Back to Present

Mori Miwa: I… was going to tell her something but now… I feel I can’t trust anyone at all.

Hamasaki Hana: I see… so she tries to protect you, I feel sorry that those were the last words you had to her…

Mori Miwa: Indeed but… what about the rest of you, it was the last I saw of you before the explosion so, what were you all doing…?

Esumi Masa: Oh curious about us? Well, we can assure that we got alibis… right Hana-san?

Hamasaki Hana: Hu-Huh? O-Oh… right…

Seems that Hana-san is getting distracted, I wonder what happen but regardless… why does the other have alibis?

Okamoto Fuji: > Hana’s account,…

Yeah, Hana-san was with everyone before the explosion… except for one person…

Okamoto Fuji: > Jobon’s account, I got it!

Okamoto Fuji: Well it seems that Hana-san wasn’t with everyone, she notice Kita-san going back to the mountain where you 2 were suppose to be at but Norman-san was there however it seems that Norman-san… wanted to shoot himself, right?

Hamasaki Hana: O-Oh right, ye-yeah I remember that part…

Inoue Sunako: Huh, Hana-chan? You okay…?

Hamasaki Hana: So-sorry I was getting distracted about something that isn’t related to this trial, let’s continue on… I’ll speak about it later.

Hamasaki Hana: But yeah, I think mine and Jobon-san’s account do line up since he left, right?

Kita Jobon: It seems to be the case, I hear the explosion and rush over as quickly as I could but when I arrive I… saw that Miwa-san was missing, Ryoko-san legs got blown off and… Norman-san there – I had no idea what happen but one thing did happen… Norman-san wanted me to shoot him.

Kobayashi Eito: Wait, he… wanted you to shoot him?! Wh-Why?!

Kita Jobon: I… wasn’t sure why, I figure maybe it was because he was the one that killed Ryoko-san if I had to guess so I did as he asked…

Katou Doi: I see then he was the one that killed Ryoko-chan then… what was the weapon then? I didn’t recall seeing it so it must have been small, right?

Kimura Tomoe: Yeah I only recall him carrying a book but that was it, did any of us see what it was…?

Kobayashi Eito: Yeah true, what… could it be?

True, we didn’t see any weapon on him so it had to be something that can fit into your hand and cause an exploision…

Okamoto Fuji: > Grenade Bomb, I got it!

Okamoto Fuji: I believe it was a Grenade, right? It would be small enough to carry in one hand but cause a big explosion!

Nakahara Rai: Yep – I even saw the safety pin near by so likely he must of use that to cause that!

Esumi Masa: I see so that’s the weapon, but now we know what happen but now the question is… first off, who did Norman-san kill?

Yes, that should be simple… who did Norman-san kill?

Okamoto Fuji: - Mori Miwa, -Hanlon Norman, >Hayashi Ryoko

Okamoto Fuji: I got it!

Okamoto Fuji: It was Hayashi-san of course – that is the person he killed?

Esumi Masa: Indeed but it seems that someone killed him, who was that…?

Ah yes, the person that killed Norman-san… well this person already confess to the crime, right?

Okamoto Fuji: -Norman Hanlon, >Kita Jobon

Okamoto Fuji: I got it!

Okamoto Fuji: Well it was Kita-san…

Kobayashi Eito: Um, yeah we already know? Hey why are you asking questions we already know the answer to…?

Inoue Sunako: Yeah he say, he wanted to die and allow Jobon-kun to kill him, right?

Esumi Masa: Well I just need to be sure, now here’s one last question… why did Norman-san wanted to kill? What was the motive…

The motive… right, he had a motive but what was the motive… what reason did he try to kill?

Okamoto Fuji: > Shizen Resort Owner, I got it!

Okamoto Fuji: Are you… referring to the Shizen Resort Owner? I think he even mention he found out the owner and plan to do something.

Kimura Tomoe: Oh right, he did mention that! He intended to aim after the owner!

Kimura Tomoe: But hold on, weren’t we all told the owner is Hamoponi? He say so himself, right?

Hamoponi: Well seems you all must of figure it out, I’ll tell you… I’m not the actual owner of the resort in fact I lied about that part.

Katou Doi: Wai-Wait? You lie about that!

Hamoponi: For the most part but I mostly did that to protect them, I believe they even wanted to tell everyone what they were but weren’t too sure… I think they even had plans to tell you all but that person likely can’t speak up or really trust anyone at all…

Hamasaki Hana: So this person doesn’t trust us, well what do we know about the owner?

Okamoto Fuji: Well one thing I did figure out, the gender of the current resort’s owner is a girl.

Esumi Masa: I see so one of the girls then, well let’s see if we cut down the list… it couldn’t be myself or Hana-san.

Hamasaki Hana: Exactly, he would of waited for us to come back and attack…

Kobayashi Eito: Right so that’s 2, then we can also cross off Fuji-san, Tomoe-chan and Sunako-san then since he would of aim for those 3 instantly…

Inoue Sunako: Yep, so that’s leave 2 left… Ryoko-chan and Miwa-chan.

Esumi Masa: Yep so now the big question… who is the current Shizen Resort Owner? Who owns this place and it’s someone that doesn’t trust anyone…

Seeing as we limited those that I could point to… there’s one person I can say who it is…

Question: Who Was Hanlon Norman’s original target?

Okamoto Fuji: >…, I deeply apologize but I believe it’s you!
