Looking Back at The Bay

This weekend, I went back and looked at every drive/flight/trip between SoCal and the bay since I’ve moved in 2013.

Here’s what I found:

2013:

August 29th, drove from FC to OC in my move to SoCal! (Jimmy later came down to visit, early November). 

November for Thanksgiving. Dan Liu came to stay. Definitely drove up & back with Jenn.

December (mid month), definitely. Not sure re fly or drive.

2 trips, at least 3 drives, 1 trip not sure.

2014:

January, for New Year’s. Not sure re fly or drive.

April 4-6. HMB with Lauren (green shirt). Went to the city with a bunch of friends (Jimmy, Giana, Lauren, Janelly, Briana). Four Seasons pool with Dad. Flew SNA-SFO. 

May 23-25ish. Went to a tiki bar with Giana and Lauren. Also went to a Giants game, I think with Dad. Not sure re fly or drive.

June 3-4, to say goodbye to Kassie. Flew.

July 3-6. Left straight from M&R. Definitely drove.

August 8-10. Jesse & Anu! Drove.

November for Thanksgiving. Worked at M&R in SF on Dec 1. Drove with Jesse.

December 12-14 for Christmas. Flew.

8 trips (or 7, kind of), at least 6 drives, at least 6 flights, 2 trips not sure.

2015:

January, for New Year’s. Definitely got to see Lauren & Giana together, at least once. Not sure re fly or drive.

March 13-15, with Lina. HMB. Golden Gate Bridge with Lauren and Giana. Drove.

July 10-17, for a week after M&R/ before MSK. Beach/coast day with Lauren, north of the Golden Gate. 100% sure I drove. Took I-5 on the way up and PCH on the way back down. My first time.

August 21-23, for Elyse’s wedding. Took pictures in the city with Jenn and Brian. Flew.

December 10-14, for Christmas. Boat Christmas party. Eucalyptus Ave. Jenn was definitely home too. Giana and Janelly slept over one night. Went to that holiday party with Tina. Flew.

(No family Thanksgiving; Thanksgiving this year was in Mexico, but I did do a Thanksgiving with Jenn and Brian in Signal Hill first). 5 trips, at least 4 drives, at least 4 flights, 1 trip not sure.

2016:

January, for New Year’s at Giana’s place with her, Sherry, Jessie, Janelly, Sherry, and Tina. Took that pic with Shemus. Not sure re fly or drive but I think I drove.

March 25-27 (four seasons pool weekend with dad). Got ramen. Went to Cheesecake Factory with Giana and Sherry. Also went to Pacifica. Flew LGB-SFO.

April 22-24, with Jesse, Katie, and Lexie! Boat ride with Lexie and Giana. Definitely drove. Lexie and I took PCH on the way back.

August 19-21, with Carina. She met dad! Went to the Buena Vista in the city. I also recall having some people over for a small barbecue but don’t have any pictures (I think Tommy Boyd was there, Jenna, and some other people). There was cornhole in the backyard. We drove.

October 5-9, to hang with Dad & Mom post-surgery and injury. Went to Target with Giana and Sherry and dressed up in random crap. Flew Virgin America.

(No family Thanksgiving; Thanksgiving this year was in SoCal. Christmas was in Riverside for the first time).  5 trips, at least 4 drives, at least 4 flights, 1 trip not sure.

2017:

January, for New Year’s. On the 2016 side of this, Dec 30th, I went to Lauren’s in Oakland and had some Christmas loaf. Celebrated New Year’s in Palo Alto with Giana, Sherry, and Carmen. Drove! Snow on I-5 on the way back! As of 6/8/20, this trip was the last time I drove by myself. Giana and Lauren later came down to visit, March 31st. We went out in Long Beach.

April 28-30, with Carina. She met mom! Went to SF the night we got there, with Giana and we got margaritas. We went for a walk around FC, and also hit Crystal Springs the day we flew back. Flew. I later got to see Giana in New York with Tommy Boyd, May 21st.

August 4-7, for OSU buds, Jenn & Brian’s announcement, and Giana’s going away party. Lauren was at Giana’s thing. Flew.

August 25-28, went again for Mom & Dad’s birthdays. Dad & I re-did my old bedroom (and also hit the pool at the Four Seasons). New corner of the backyard was finally done. Flew.

October 20-23, with Dan & Chrystal. Dad had the new four-chair setup in the living room. Definitely flew JetBlue, LGB-SFO. Lauren later came down for Halloween (Scooby Doo group outfit).

November 23-27, for a combined Thanksgiving & Christmas. Ate a lot on this trip and kept passing out as a result, lol. While Carina was in the desert with her family, Hector bit Caiba. Flew.

6 trips, 2 drives, 10 flights.

2018:

January, for New Year’s with Carina. On Dec 30, 2017, went to Palo Alto with Carina, Giana, and Sherry. Dad later came to SoCal for Kinsley’s arrival. Mom also moved to SoCal on New Year’s. Flew.

March 16-19, with Jesse, Katie and Carina for St. Patrick’s Day! Drove up with J&K (I was passenger) and flew back (via JetBlue, SFO). As of 6/8/20, this was the last trip with any driving involved.

June 20-25, Giants game, big barbecue in the backyard, pride at the park. Blue Jell-O shots at my bbq courtesy of Giana and Sherry. Got to see both Giana and Lauren at my house on June 21st. Flew.

August 8-12, to help dad after surgery. Didn’t really see friends as Dad was the focus but did see Giana and Jessie at Giana’s aunt’s place. Flew.

August 17-20, went again for Nicole’s wedding. Boat ride with Carina, Jimmy, Brian, Kirsten, Monique, and Amber. Going away party for Giana at her Aunt’s house (with Carina, Lauren, Jessie, Sherry, and Giana’s friend Zach). I believe this was the last time Giana, Lauren and I were all together. Fun day going around SF with Carina while it was kind of cold/rainy (we took pictures by the painted ladies then went to a small coffee shop). Flew.

November 26-27, sort of, just for a day after Iceland as an extended layover/ between flights. Just one night. Thanksgiving had been in Iceland with Carina and her mom.

December 7-10, for Christmas. Kinsley kept us up all weekend. Flew LAX-SFO on Southwest. (Then Dad later came to SoCal in Jan for Kinsley’s one year bday party and we went to dinner in Laguna for my bday and our engagement).

7 trips (or 6, kind of), 1 drive (on the way up only), 11 flights.

2019:

May 2-5, to visit Dad after surgery. Buena Vista with Lauren. I think we went for vegan Mexican food beforehand. Got to meet Brian’s dog Ruby at Brian’s place in FC. Flew SNA-SJC on Alaska. 

June 28 - July 1, with Carina and saw lots of friends at the bar night in San Mateo (Giana, Jessie, Janelly, Brian, Monique, Jimmy). Small backyard BBQ with just Jimmy and Giana (and we made those frozen Oreo pops). Flew SNA-SJC. Brian and Monique later came down to Laguna for the 4th of July.

September 12-15, just for the weekend for Carina’s launch party. Dad had redone the TV room at the house (by the kitchen). I ran the Golden Gate with Lauren the morning of, and got to see her the night before, too (where we hung out in Oakland and a creepy dude lurked outside her place). After the chunk of time with Lauren, I had a super nice time in the city with Carina. Her launch party on Treasure Island was fun, and the next day we had a full day of walking around and exploring the city. We stayed at the Palace Hotel, and went to Sweet Maple for brunch. Awesome all the way around. It was a gorgeous day and one for the books. Definitely flew SNA-OAK, SFO-SNA. (Then Dad later came down to Laguna in October, Oct 18-20). Also later got to see Lauren in Oceanside on November 17th.

(No family Thanksgiving; I believe JBK went up, but I stayed back to see Mom on Thanksgiving day then host Thanksgiving dinner at Katella with Carina’s family). 3 trips, all flying.

2020:

January 17-19, for my birthday, with Carina. Saw lots of friends (Brian, Jimmy, Monique, Amber, Russ, Chris Tham, Jessie, Gal). Fun night in the city with all of them. And then HMB with Lauren and Carina. Flew SNA-SJC on Alaska. Dad later came down a week later for Kinsley’s 2nd birthday.

1 trip so far, all flying.

31 Things

I started this yearly tradition of reflection on my birthday and this year I’m a few day late because I had been sick on my bday which is not exactly ideal day to spend one’s bday. But this year I have been very blessed and feel so loved by people around me (I still can’t believe what my colleagues and friends did to surprise me) But first, let me list 31 things I’m grateful for (not in any particular order).

31. An able and relatively healthy body to do all the things I want to do (besides still not being able to donate blood - dammit hemogloboodles!)

30. Being financially comfortable to afford simple conveniences of the modern world. (I can afford to buy things and going on trips.)

29. The internet - where I can get to buy things online, learn new things, keep abreast what things happening in the world, and keep in contact with my friends and family.

28. Book Depository - I’m a regular customer and fan.

27. Youtube - for keeping me entertained and informed.

26. Libby - my favourite new digital library app. I’ve been reading a lot more and listening to lots of audiobooks ever since i started using it.

25. Skype - My communication portal for the nightly konbanwas with Ling-san.

24. Telegram - My communication portal for all the morning ohaiyos with Jan-chan.

23. The GUI web and digital marketing team - we’ve been meeting almost weekly to work on various things and it really feels great to be part of something and working hard together as volunteers. Even though we sometimes don’t really know what we’re doing, it’s heartening to see our efforts going into something good. Even though the future for GUI is uncertain, we hope to keep this kampung spirit going strong to impact as many people as we can.

22. Medium - An essential source of learning on various design and industry best practices. I probably owe much of my career to this blog publishing site.

21. Coffee - This year I developed a preference for black coffee. Lulu said only psychopaths drink coffee black with no sugar. I beg to differ. Or am I psycho?

20. Wireless bluetooth technology - I love my cheap $20 earphones from Lazada. I wear it to exercise at my aunty gym corner downstairs while listening to podcasts. And I wear it on my commute. It’s an any-purpose kind of earphones.

19. Long walks - I love walking around the neighbourhood by myself on weekends while listening to an audiobook.

18. Long walks with my family - This year’s Mother’s Day my fam decided to have a picnic at Punggol waterfront and after that we walked for 4 hours to Hougang. It was tiring but memorable. And I realised that once we got over the painful parental nagging part of the conversation, things can be quite pleasant.

17. Patient friends who are willing to listen to my nerdy book presentations - I make use of them to revise what i’ve learnt from the books I read.

16. My loving work family - Jessie, Shirshir, Vikas korkor, Lily, Lulu, Elwin, Shishi, Jan-chan, and of cos our boss, Pranav. They make me look forward to coming to work every day.

15. My parents - though they never outwardly express their affections but I know they care for us deeply. Despite all their nagging, it is always out of concern for us. And I like that they never complain when I bring them out to do shenanigans like climbing mountains in New Zealand.

14. Having a comfortable housing - I have lived in this flat ever since I was born. Although the walls crack and the tap doesn’t always have the best water pressure, I like having my own space in my room. And all my stuff. Though now sitting at my desk and looking around, maybe I should consider marie-kondoing...

13. Headspace - Although I don’t meditate as often as I’d like to, this app has provided my much needed companion to get into the mood. Recently I discovered their sleepcasts mode which makes bedtime much more interesting and soothing (I love that narrator’s voice)

12. Late night talkshow hosts - Thank you Stephen Colbert, Trevor Noah for the entertainment that is American politics and world affairs.

11. Postcards - I love writing as much as receiving postcards from friends. It is always a delight to hear from friends who got surprised from receiving a card from me. This is such a simple gesture that can bring so much joy, I wonder why people don’t do it more.

10. Each-A-Cup - they truly are the most underrated bubble tea shop. I appreciate that they brew every cup with tea leaves on the spot per order. My all-time favourite order is hot earl grey milk tea, 25% sugar, no pearls. Ordered with my reusable tea mug and cup holder, of course. 

9. Apple Pay - I appreciate places that accept digital payments. I now no longer have to fumble around with my wallet and holding up the queue. Although it always makes spending money much more easy and I have to be more mindful about that. 

8. ReOps Slack - This is a very active online community of researchers. I’m learning so much from the conversations happening in there which is pretty useful to bring into our research team at work.

7. Vipassana - recently my parents started looking into meditation in their own way and seems like they are seeing benefits of it. I’m still hoping to get them to join a proper retreat one day.

6. Empress Porridge - I look forward to Wednesdays when they have their special chicken and century egg porridge. Which I would, of course, dabao with my container and get 50 cents off. 

5. Journal notebooks - Ever since last year’s bday (when jan-chan gave me my first book) I have cultivated a habit of writing down details about my day. This gives me space to reflect. And sometimes noting down seemingly mundane things is a good mindfulness practice in itself.

4. My job - I have stepped into a new role at work this year and I think I’m still struggling to figure it out. But someone reminded me recently that if something is easy it’s probably not worth doing. 

3. Ground-Up Initiative - This is a community where I have met so many kind, interesting, passionate, and wise individuals. I feel inspired and renewed every time I go to the kampung. This place made me feel hope years ago when I almost felt jaded about Singapore. 

2.  Being Singaporean - Despite all the complains, I still feel lucky to grow up in a country where I don’t have to worry about safety, education, political instability. And I have freedom to travel almost anywhere with this passport. 

1. My privileges - To be growing up in a stable country. To be in a middle income bracket. To receive a world-class education. To have free access to information. To be able bodied. To be bilingual in English and Mandarin. To be a designer. To be human. 

I think I should be spending more time thinking about, how can I best leverage on these privileges to drive more positive impact? Sometimes I think about how I am just one person. How can little old me be any use to the world? I am sometimes lazy, sometimes shy, sometimes fearful, and sometimes just feel not good enough. Yes, they are excuses and may seem very valid. But I try to also remind myself these other conditions that put me in better position than others in the world to do something to help improve things. 

So far in my 31 years on Earth, I wonder how much net contribution/destruction I have made. If only there is a formula and a way to track that because I think it is always useful to take stock and review our footprint on this world. But at the same time, we are all going to die one day, so does it all matter?

Why did you choose this path?  I like the fact that its my own personal craft. I’m the highest authority and no one can come into my space to try and undermine me. It just also makes sense to me. It feels right like I was always meant to be here. 

37. Whats your favorite element? As a Crabby who lives on Long Island, Water has always been my one true element, tho lately I am growing very fond of the other 3 and trying to work more with them. 

38. Do you do any misc. magic? What does that mean? 39. Magic or things you will never do? Love spells.  40. Strangest way a spell backfired? Omg this is the best story! Okay so background, I have an autistic brother who I take care of during the day so my parents can work and they pay me for it. How it typically works is the more I watch him, the more I get paid. He goes to a special program during the day so if he’s home from that my parents pay me more since I have to basically stay home with him all day. Okay so now to the story, I was doing a revamped version of my money spell that had worked very well the last time I did it. About a week after that (give or take but it was very quickly after) my brother ended up hurting his knee to the point that he really couldn’t walk on it. Thankfully he really wasn’t in pain, but he could’t go to program so he had to stay home which meant I had t watch him all day for a few weeks...you can see where this is going right? lol! Seriously I was convinced my money spell caused my bro to hurt his knee so that I got paid more to stay home with him! Needless to say I reworked my money spell again to add a note to make sure no one gets hurt again! xD

I want all witches who follow me to do this so I can learn more about all of you!!
