♡ summary: Being a teen mom is hard but without any help it's even harder, after saving up enough she can finally move to Stars Hollow to be closer to her baby's father
♡ Jess Mariano x reader
request ✓
The bus ride down was long, and it only got worse as 1-year-old Caroline woke up from her nap and decided to let everyone know of the inconvenience. Finally after the long months of working and saving up she had enough to move to Stars Hollow, unlike Jess who had a parent to send them and an uncle to stay with, she saved up and made it happen. She wanted Caroline to be around her father, and she wanted to be close to Jess.
And Y/n’s always loved the idea of a small town, a place where you felt safe, a place she would feel safe raising her child in, a place that wasn’t $2,500 a month for a closet. Here she could give her daughter a lot more, here she would have a support system in Jess and Luke. Unlike what her parents would give her.
By this point in the bus route it was only the mother and daughter and a couple strays, she saw the messy haired boy sitting on a park bench close to the bus stop, of course he had his nose in a book. She started packing up Caroline’s stuff, tucking her blanket and toys in the basket of the stroller.
When she got to the bus doors, Jess quickly made his way to help her lift the stroller down the steps, when the stroller was once again on the ground Jess squats down getting face to face with his little girl, “Hey, Care!” “Daddy!” He lifted her up by her armpits. When the little girl was out of her seat and in her dad’s arms, her mom stacked their bags on the seat.
“Hi! You’re so big! Really she is. She’s growing up so fast.” “Well she can walk way more stable now. No more scaring, mommy that you’ll fall if I look away for a second.” She says the last sentence in baby voice while she tickles the girl’s belly to make her giggle and their foreheads to rest on each other’s.
“So you gonna show us around?!” “‘Around’?” They continued their walk around the gazebo area, walking towards Luke’s.
“This is it, that's the record shop, that’s the bookstore, that's Luke’s, and that’s all you need to know.” “Well where’s the bank, I might need to rob it later.” “You’ll find a job. And if you don’t then work at Luke’s, he could do with the time off then maybe he’d get off everyone’s backs.” “He’s probably stressed with you always causing trouble.” “Me? Trouble? Nooo, I’m a peach.”
-
Jess had the baby today since Y/n was off to find a job, her first stop was the most promising. Luke let her know that a friend of his needed extra staff at their Inn for an event that was coming up, someone who could be an assistant of sorts. So after wearing her most capable looking top, and best fitting jeans. She kissed Caroline’s check and yelled goodbye to Luke and Jess as she began her walk.
When she walked inside she saw a man at the front desk on the phone. Waiting to ask for directions, she hung around the man’s desk, busying herself with some pamphlet. She couldn't help but listen to the man’s angry English in his french accent.
Suddenly he hung up the phone and got back to writing whatever he was writing, without looking up and with an annoyed tone said, “Yes?” “I was looking for Lorelei, I’m here for-” “The assistant job, yes.. Follow me.” He walked quickly to wherever it was they were going, mumbling along the way, “Of course, an assistant. Just what we need around here. Not like I don’t already do most of the work around here.”
He opened the door for them, it ended up being the kitchen they were now in. A tall woman holding a to-go coffee cup that said ‘Luke’s’ on it and a shorter woman in an apron fighting with a scruffy man about vegetables, which look to be parsnips.
“The mini-you is here.” “One little comment, Micheal. I’m not saying you’re incapable. I just want more help with organising events so I focus on planning!” “Whatever.” Turning on his heels, Micheal walked out the doors making his way back to his desk.
“So you’ve met Micheal! Sorry, we usually don’t let him around the new people but we're a little short-staffed. Let’s head to the dining room.”
They sat down at a table in the dining room, Lorelei asked all the important questions, and Y/n was perfect, now she was just asking the things she’ll tell Sookie later when the woman asks about the new hire.
Taking a sip of her sixth coffee this morning Lorelei asked, “So, are you new to town? I haven’t seen you around before.” The girl was stirring milk into her second coffee as she responded, “Yeah, I am. I just moved here with my um- my daughter, closer to her dad so…”
Since it was of course the time most adults got horrified, thought she was a bad kid, and though she didn’t get that vibe from Lorelei, it was at least bound to shock her. “You’re daughter? How old are you? Wait- I know, it’s on your resume. I mean- I’m, deja vu y’know? Abba did say ‘the history books on the shelf are always repeating themselves’.”
She must have seen the confused look on the young girl and explained, “I had my daughter when I was sixteen.. And came here to get a job, so just getting major deja vu. Well then, since I know what you’re going through, I won’t put you through the short mental torture of waiting for a call I was gonna do and just tell you you got the job.” “Oh, thank you! I really need this, I can’t thank you enough.” “Just change her name to Lorelei and we’ll call it even.” “deal.” Those two would get along great, much to Luke’s misfortune.
-
Y/n sat at the counter with Caroline in front of her sitting on the counter while she played with her mother’s hair. Jess was filling up cups of coffee and serving customers while he listened to Y/n’s words.
“So until you go back to school, you’ll have Caroline during the day here and when I’m done work I’ll take her.” “No, you’ll never have a break. After work you go to your house, relax then grab her after dinner.”
Jess may have this ‘I only care about myself’ attitude but that never included Caroline and Y/n, he’d kill for either of them at any given moment. He always put them first. If thought Y/n needed a break, she was getting a break whether she wanted it or not.
Just as the girl was going to thank him she was interrupted by another girl around their age coming to sit down at the counter, two over from her.
“I have the book you lent me.” She said, unknowingly interrupting the conversation since Jess was facing the coffee machine to make a new batch when she sat down. “Oh, thanks.” He muttered, notably not turning to face her.
On the inside Jess felt guilty. Why did he feel guilty? He didn’t do anything, he and Y/n weren’t together, nevermind the fact that all he did was lend Rory a book. As friends. Because they’re friends. But nonetheless it almost felt like cheating. Jess and Y/n may not be together officially but that didn’t mean that they both didn’t love each other. And not just because they were the parents to a beautiful little girl. Jess had always wanted more, he’d let the girl know that more than a handful of times, and she let him know it wasn’t unrequited, yet something always came between them.
You’d think having a baby together would bring them closer, and in some ways it did; they trusted each other more. But they also fought more and being the dumb teenagers they were, they didn’t have the emotional ability to move past that and build the relationship they both wanted. And then when they felt they were ready to, Jess was sent to live with his uncle. Just another fork in the road. But now they were living in the same town and had a good system, and people to support them. It was the perfect time, everything was going right, they could feel all the feelings that never really left resurfacing.
“Okay, I have to get to work. You’ve got her?” “Yeah.” “Bye, baby, I love you. I’ll see you in a little bit, but you get to spend all day with daddy.” “Bye-bye, mommy!”
She said bye to Jess after she walked around the counter and handed him Caroline, muttering a small ‘go see, daddy’ that Rory most definitely heard.
When the door finally chimed shut Rory shot up to follow Jess to the table he was now setting Caroline up at. She watched his gentle movements as he readjusts her shirt and places crayons and paper in front of her, which she got right into scriballing away.
“She’s yours?” “Yeah.” “.. So that girl is your girlfri-" "I’ve got work to do.”
-
The warm atmosphere of the dinner is a stark contrast to the cold winter air. Noticing Jess and Caroline are nowhere to be seen she assumes they were upstairs and makes her way up the stairs. Half-way up the flight of stairs she could hear her little girl’s loud giggles. She quietly opens the door to see Jess holding Caroline above his head, as if she was flying.
When she first got pregnant everyone told her Jess wouldn’t be a good dad, that she can’t rely on him for anything. God were they wrong. She doesn’t think it’s possible for her baby to have a better person as a dad. She sadly doesn’t get to watch the scene for much longer as she’s spotted by little Caroline.
“Mommy! I see daddy ‘morrow?” “Yes, you get to be with daddy all day tomorrow too.” “Yay!”
As the conversation between them goes on, Jess lets his little girl plant her feet back on the ground and starts collecting some things she’ll need during the night before she comes back here tomorrow, he then starts getting Caroline’s shoes on her feet. While Y/n sits on the couch next to their little girl.
“So who was that girl this morning?” “Who?”
Jess always did this, it was a tell tale sign that he didn’t want to talk about it, but that’s never stopped Y/n before. “You know who.” Of course having to be difficult, Jess gives her a fake confused look, as if he’s never met another girl in his life.
“The one returning your book.” “Oh, that girl.” “Yeah, that girl.” “She’s nobody.” “So you just lend books to ‘nobody’s now?” “Care, where’s Mr.Wiggle?” The girl lets out a gasp and reaches out for Jess to help her off the couch, when he does she runs into the closet where she previously hid while playing hide and seek a couple hours earlier.
“What? Don’t want Care to hear about her new step-mom?” “Don’t call her that.” “What? Care? Only you can call her that?” “No, don’t call Rory Care’s ‘step-mom’.” “Rory! I get her name!”
Jess was a quiet guy, but not this quiet, especially not with Y/n. He didn’t want to talk about Rory, maybe because it was weird talking about another girl with your baby momma. And yes it was weird for Y/n too, but for a completely different reason, she assumes. She liked Jess, and has since before she even knew about Caroline.
“C’mon, Jess, it’s me. I want you to be happy.” Sure Rory made him happy, but only because she was the only friend he had here, it wasn’t the way Y/n made him happy. Before he could deny for words again Caroline came back running into the room with her stuffie in her hands. Having already said her goodbyes, she opened the door and walked out.
“Caroline, wait hun! I think you should go for it Jess.”
She walked out the door, closing it behind her, leaving Jess to stare at where she disappeared. He decided to take her advice, just maybe not the way she meant it
-
Y/n helped Caroline pack more snow onto their snowman. Caroline wanted to do it after she heard Luke complaining about town events again, he stopped complaining when he saw how excited the girl was. They had Mr.Wiggles off the side learning against the tree, using him as a reference.
“Mommy, no. Mr.Wiggles has more hair.”
Caroline was getting very comfortable ordering her mother around, but in this instance Y/n let it slide, poking more sticks on the top of the snowman’s head to mimic Mr.Wiggle’s spiky hair.
“That’s good!”
Lorelei and Rory were just one snowman down, both told Caroline they thought she would win and encouraged her before she even started. Since they were so close, they could hear the scene that had just played out.
“Tough age, wait till you get to the terrible twos. ‘No’ is all you’ll hear.” Lorelei said, kindly as her and her own daughter walked past them. Y/n let out a laugh at the comment before she asks, “You guys done already?” “No, but after Michelangelo over there busted out the power buffer, and when Caroline busts out her cuteness, what chance do we have?” “I see your point.” “So off to Luke’s we go.” “We’ll see you there in a bit.”
-
Y/n was standing talking to one of the decorators when she saw Lorelei and Sookie step out of the kitchen, quickly finishing her directions she wrote down a note on her clipboard then made her way to meet them at the entrance of the dining room.
When Sookie sees her, she asks, “What’re we looking at today?” Sookie was really fun to work with, like Lorelei she was very chill as a boss, but Sookie was also so kind and always took it upon herself to make sure Y/n has eaten and that her and Caroline are taken care of. She could tell the woman was going to make an amazing mother.
“This is last on the list.” She replied, after she took a quick glance at her clipboard, then continued, “We’ve got trumpets, the madrigal singers-” “Sorry to interrupt, but I’m not playing squire of Bracebridge.”
Sookie and Lorelei must have finally told Jackson to play the squire, they told her earlier in the week that they were playing to ask at the last moments so he had to. It was a flawless plan, especially when Jackson can’t say no to Sookie.
She saw that Lorelei and Sookie were just ignoring him, so she played along and continued down her list, “All the servers are lined up. This is just for the recorder players and harpists.” She stopped at the recorder players and let Lorelei talk to them, “Hi. Lay some on us, guys.”
The two recorder players played the soft tube they were going to come accustomed to in the next few days. The three of them shared positive looks and when their playing came to an end, Sookie said, “Hey, you cats really know how to blow those things.” Lorelei continued Sookie’s comment by saying, “You’ve got the gig. Y/n here will call you later with the details. Thanks.”
Recorder players started packing their things, Jackson started again on the fact that he wouldn’t play the squire, and the three women continued to ignore him.
“When do the quests arrive?” “Thursday at four on their own jet.” “After buying out the whole inn.”
“Must be nice to have money.” Y/n added, checking off and writing down more notes on her clipboard.
“You know what struck me today?” “-Was it the fact that I am not the squire?-""We’re crazy for doing this.” “We’re beyond crazy.” It did feel crazy, Lorelei told her they’d never done a function this big before and that’s the reason they hired more help. Like her, but also that they were planning to do a lot more big things like this, more weddings, and such.
“We’re ‘Anne Heche speaking her secret language to god and looking for the spaceship in Fresno’ kinda crazy.” “Oquinis no-goodo noto.” Sookie said, causing Y/n add, “Il ecnatra dos guidan.”
Their nonsense was once again interrupted by Jackson, “And spring this on me at the last minute too. I mean, that’s just manipulative.” Suddenly a cook pops his head out of the kitchen, saying calmly, “Sookie- fire!”
Sookie rolled her eyes softly, this happened far too often, before saying, “I gotta get back in the kitchen. You guys handle the harps?” Both women nodded and replied in unison, “You got it.”
“Alright. I’ll do it. I’ll play squire Bracebridge if that’s what you want.” Everyone knew he would cave eventually. Sookie patted his arm and said a quick, “Thanks, sweetie.” before walking back into the kitchen to hopefully deal with the fire. “As long as it’s not just because I fit the costume.” Jackson looked back at Lorelei and Y/n, Lorelei had a grin on her face while Y/n wore a tight-lipped smile. “It’s because I fit the costume, isn’t it?” He followed after Sookie.
Lorelei put her arm around Y/n and led them to the harpist, “Go ahead.” The harpist played the same tune as the two recorder players. But just as the woman started, Lorelei got a call. She patted Y/n’s arm, “I have to take this, you handle the harpist.”
The girl tried to stay calm, nodding her head and going back to listening to the music. Lorelei trusted her, yes it wasn’t a big job by any means, but still it was a step into a bigger role down the line.
-
The next day, Sookie and Y/n had all the waiters/performers in the dining room going over what their job was. And teaching them the old English words to use for things.
Sookie was just telling Rune that he couldn’t just talk like an old man whe Lorelei came in with a disappointed look on her face, and let them know the dinner was off.
The three women, as well as Rory and Caroline were now sitting at a table at Luke’s, Caroline was happily eating her pancakes, plain just as she liked and completely unaware of the collective disappointment of the group.
Lorelei has really welcomed Y/n into her life. She may not be Jess’s biggest fan, but she would always help another teen mom out. Especially since she sees so much of herself in Y/n. She’s grown to really love the girl in the short time they’ve known each other. And aftering hearing Y/n didn’t have her family in her life she was more than happy to help and maybe become that family for her one day. Just like Mia did for her.
“I’ve got 30 pounds of aged beef, trays and trays of trout, mountains of prune tarts. I diced pumpkins until my hands turned orange. I’ve got pumpkin hands!” Sookie showed the table her hands, it apparently caught Caroline’s attention since she grabbed Sookie’s right hand and held it in her left while she continued eating. Sookie lets her hand rest in the little girl’s while she freaks out more and asks Lorelei, “How can you stay so calm?” “There’s nothing we can do about it.”
Rory was just as upset, mostly because she knew how hard her mother worked on the planning, “I can’t believe they got snowed in.” Y/n hasn’t told Jess, but she’s become pretty close to Rory, the girl sometimes comes to the Inn and helps around and Rory’s become kinda her only friend, that was until Rory invited her to the record store with Lane. After that day she had two friends.
After knowing Rory more, she realised how much she and Jess have in common, and even though Rory has a boyfriend she can tell there’s an attraction to Jess she’s trying so hard to hide.
Y/n zoned out for a moment, looking outside, she was upset that the first event she helped organise wouldn’t even happen. She was broken from her stare out the window from Caroline jumping in place while sitting on her mom’s lap, the cause of which was Luke coming to the table.
“You girls want anything besides coffee?” He asked, adding on with a pat on the girl’s head, “Or pancakes?” “Hey, what about Luke?” “What about him?” “He eats, and Jess eats. Doesn’t Jess eat?” Sookie directs the question at Y/n, before the girl could say anything Luke cuts her off, “What’s she doing?” “I think she’s inviting you for dinner.”
Getting distracted while trying to convince Luke to come to dinner, the four decide to still put on the dinner for the town. Like an out of control slumber-party.
-
The dinner was going great, the secret amazing part of inviting the town was that Y/n and Caroline could actually meet everyone. Miss. Patty and Babette loved Y/n and Caroline (mostly Caroline), Caroline loved Kirk, and everyone loved that Caroline could do whatever she wanted and Talor wouldn’t say anything. And Y/n got to meet Paris after all the stories she’s heard.
Caroline and Y/n were in line for the horse drawn carriage rides, when Caroline saw her favourite person, Lane. “Laney! I ride with you!” Lane, before agreeing, made eye contact with Y/n to make sure it was okay. Y/n gave them the go ahead and helped Caroline get settled. After their carriage left she made her way to the next one. Telling the driver it’s just her.
It was nice to get a break from everything. It was quiet and peaceful. Well that was until Jess ran up and hopped on the carriage next to her. Without a word he put the blanket that was over the girl’s legs on his too.
“I thought you and Care were going together.” “She’s one ahead, with Lane.” “Ahhh. Well it’s two to a sleigh no more, no less. So you were breaking the rules, you're welcome for saving you.” “You could have hurt yourself.” “Aw, you care about me.” “You are my baby's father.”
She wished she just agreed with him. She didn’t just care for him because he was Caroline’s dad, and she doesn’t think she says it enough. But then again, maybe it would mess things up if she admitted that. But that decision was made for her.
“I’m touched.” “Jess. I don’t mean it like that. I care about you, Caroline or not.”
Trying to change the topic to something she thought was more lighthearted, she says, “So, how are things with Rory?” “There are no things with Rory.” “C’mon, Jess, we can talk about this stuff-” “Why are you so insistent that I date Rory?”
She wasn’t expecting that outburst. Not from Jess. He rarely ever yelled at her, and when he did it was always misplaced anger, never actually angry at her. This time it was her, it was what she said.
“I just want you to be happy-” “C’mon, Y/n. Be serious.” “I am. I want-” “If you want me to be happy so bad, why won’t you give me a chance?!”
He turned his face to her, looking right into her eyes, she could see the hurt in his. Did she put it there?
“What’re you-” “Since we found out about Caroline, I’ve tried and tried to help you realise that I love you. And not how you mean ‘I love you’. I don’t love and care for you because we have a family and I have to. I love you, because I want to. I want to be with you. And I know it will be hard, but I’ll do the work.”
If she had more social awareness at the pent she would have hated that the coachman heard all of that. But after what Jess said, the look in his eyes; that was so full of love. She felt like it was just them two in the world. No, that it was just their little family in the whole world. He and Caroline were all she would ever need.
“I love you too, Jess. I have for so long, long before Caroline, but I thought you wouldn’t want to be tied down to me, especially after I had Caroline, that any sign I thought you gave me was all in my head.” “It’s not.”
He brought her in closer to him, an arm around her shoulders and when her arms wrapped around his waist he left a kiss on the crown of her head. The small kiss brought her eyes up to him, which led to their first real kiss in one year and nine months.
His lips were softer than she remembered, but they still fit into hers as if they never left.
She broke away from their reuniting kiss to place her head in the crook of his neck, wanting nothing more than to be close to him.
“My mom didn’t want me to come home.” She took her head out of his neck to look at him fully. They were always that person for each other, the one you can tell your problem to and they knew when to help and when listening was enough. Right now, she knew listening was enough.
“I’m sorry, Jess.” “It’s fine. Just sucks.” “I know. Well, Care and I will always want you to come home.” After her words, he brought her closer than before. She was always just what he needed.
Wanting to change the subject, Jess nodded his head to the snowman Y/n and Caroline built. “It’s good.” “What?” “Your snowman, well Caroline’s snowman I'm sure she’d want me to say.” “You know which one’s ours?” “Definitely shows her personality… It kinda looks like Mr.Wiggles.” “That’s what we were going for. But everyone thinks the one on the end is going to win.” “Really? It’s so overdone.” “I agree.” “You and Care’s should win.” “Agree again.”
-
The dinner was filled with Jess and Luke confused at what exactly was in the food, Jess and Y/n trying their best to keep Caroline sat which about half an hour in they gave up and just let her walk around the lobby, as well as saying hello and talking to everyone at the table. Having an interesting conversation with Mrs.Kim about grace, ‘helping’ Kirk by sitting on his rolling food cart, and even talking with Paris for a while.
Overall it was a great night. Even better when Jess, Y/n, and Caroline got to their shared room, putting Caroline asleep together for the first time in a while. And falling to sleep in the same bed together, holding each other, listening to each other’s breaths, as well as Caroline’s. Everything was just how they both always secretly wanted. And now get to have openly and freely.
-
In the morning Y/n got up early since she was technically working, and she still was when Luke, Jess, and Caroline left to open the diner for the day. It was around noon when Y/n finally left, walking to Luke’s to spend the day with her two favourite people. Which was when she saw Michelangelo’s snowman fallen to a large pile of snow on the ground.
She didn’t even have to think for a second to know that Jess did it. Sometimes he did the weirdest things to show his love.
The bell rang as she pushed open the door, she sat down next to Caroline, saying ‘good morning’ and getting one back before she made her way to the counter.
“I saw what you did.” “What’d I do?” “Caroline will be happy she won.” “Anything if my girl’s win.”

Jess Mariano taking care of sick reader? They're not together yet so she's confused because wtf why is he taking care of me? But he shows up at her house with food, medicine, blankets, etc. and just kinda lets himself in when she answers the door.
Inspired by the episode where he brings Rory food when she's home alone and also by the fact that I stayed home from school sick today 😔
𝟷𝚔 || 𝐅𝐄𝐕𝐄𝐑 𝐃𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐌
♡ ︎ꜱᴜᴍᴍᴀʀʏ: Jess was the person you least expected to take care of you when you were sick.
♡ ︎ᴡᴀʀɴɪɴɢꜱ: None
♡ ︎ꜱʜɪᴘ: Jess Mariano x sick!Reader
You groaned as you shuffled your way to the door, wrapped in a blanket and feeling like absolute death. Your head pounded, throat raw, and the world seemed a little fuzzier than usual. You were barely functioning when a knock echoed through your small apartment, a sound that made you groan louder.
You weren’t expecting anyone—definitely didn’t want anyone to see you like this—so you contemplated ignoring it. But the knocking persisted.
With a resigned sigh, you unlocked the door and cracked it open just enough to peek out. Your eyes widened when you saw none other than Jess Mariano standing on your doorstep. He was holding a bag of takeout in one hand, a plastic bag full of what looked like medicine in the other, and a blanket slung over his shoulder. His usual expression was one of bored disinterest, but you could see the subtle flicker of concern in his eyes.
“Jess?” You rasped, blinking at him in confusion. “What are you—”
He didn’t wait for you to finish. Before you could protest or even think, Jess slipped past you, letting himself into your apartment like he owned the place. “You look like death,” he said, shutting the door behind him, his tone casual but with a hint of something softer underneath.
“Thanks?” you muttered, feeling both bewildered and slightly offended, though you couldn’t deny he was right. “What are you doing here?”
Jess placed the bags on your kitchen counter, glancing at you over his shoulder. “I heard you were sick.”
“I—how?” You leaned against the doorframe for support, still trying to wrap your head around the fact that Jess Mariano was in your apartment. With food. And medicine. “Who told you?”
“Luke mentioned it.” He shrugged, as if this wasn’t a big deal. “Figured you could use some help.”
“I—” You trailed off, completely unsure how to respond to that. Jess? Showing up at your place to help? It felt like you’d entered some kind of fever dream.
“Sit down,” Jess ordered gently, his hands now occupied with unpacking the takeout containers and organizing the medicine on your counter like he’d done this a hundred times before. “You’re supposed to be resting, not playing twenty questions.”
Your brain was struggling to keep up with what was happening. “I… you didn’t have to come. I’m fine.”
Jess shot you a look, raising an eyebrow. “You look fine,” he said sarcastically, but his eyes lingered on you a second too long, and you caught that worried edge again. “Sit. Seriously.”
You shuffled over to your couch, plopping down with a huff. You watched as Jess moved around your kitchen like it was nothing, grabbing a spoon for the soup, pouring a glass of water, even pulling out a bottle of cough syrup.
“Are you always this bossy?” you muttered, half-annoyed, half-touched by how much he was doing.
“Only with people who don’t take care of themselves.” He smirked, bringing over a steaming container of soup. “Here. Eat.”
You blinked up at him, still not fully comprehending why he was doing this. “Why are you—why do you care?” The words tumbled out before you could stop them.
Jess didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he sat beside you on the couch, close enough that you could feel the warmth radiating off him, but still leaving enough space to keep things from getting awkward. He glanced at you, his expression softer than you were used to. “Someone’s gotta make sure you don’t pass out alone in here.”
His tone was teasing, but you could hear the concern laced in his words, and that only made you more confused—and flustered. Why did he care? You weren’t… you weren’t anything. Not yet, anyway.
“You’re acting weird,” you mumbled, taking a hesitant sip of the soup. “This is… nice. You’re not usually nice.”
Jess chuckled under his breath, running a hand through his hair. “Don’t get used to it.”
The two of you sat in a comfortable silence for a moment, the only sound being the clink of the spoon against the container as you ate. Jess glanced around your apartment, making small talk here and there, but you couldn’t help but notice how he kept sneaking glances at you, like he was checking to make sure you were okay.
After a while, you broke the silence, your voice soft. “Thanks. For, you know, all this.”
Jess shrugged again, but there was something different in the way he did it this time. “Don’t mention it.”
You stared at him for a beat longer than necessary, your heart doing something weird in your chest. He wasn’t the type to fuss, wasn’t the type to show up with soup and medicine for anyone—least of all you. But here he was, doing exactly that.
“You’re really weird, you know that?” you said, trying to break the tension, but your voice came out more affectionate than you intended.
Jess gave you a crooked smile, his eyes twinkling. “Takes one to know one.”
You rolled your eyes, but the smile tugging at your lips was impossible to suppress. Maybe this fever was making you delirious, but suddenly, you didn’t mind Jess being here. In fact, you kind of liked it.
Who knew Jess Mariano could be so… sweet?

haunted house | jess mariano | flufftober masterlist | 1.1k words
You cautiously stepped into the haunted house, eyeing cobwebs and skeletons. It took a moment for your vision to adjust to the darkness and see further into the room. Groups rushed past you, eager for a thrill. You took a deep breath and steeled yourself, hyp--
"Boo," a voice suddenly appeared, startling you.
You turned, your mouth curled into a frown as you recognized Jess Mariano. "Oh of all people--" you began. It just had to be him, the boy who loved playing pranks on you.
The first time you met him was at a baking class. You thought he was cute until he opened his mouth and you got to know him in all his sarcastic glory. When he swapped your sugar with salt, all lingering embers of your crush had quickly been snuffed out.
"Happy Halloween to you too," he said brightly, interrupting you, hands stuffed in his jacket pocket.
Your eyes narrowed in suspicion, "I don't trust your smile."
"What? It's just a smile," he shrugged nonchalantly, but you knew better.
"Go be a public nuisance elsewhere," you raised your hands, gesturing to far off corners in the place as you hurried deeper into the house and away from him.
"But I'd rather be a public nuisance here," he said, walking beside you. "It's a free country, you know."
You turned to him and opened your mouth to respond, but just then, a ghost in a ghastly mask jumped up from nowhere and you screamed in terror. You found your arms clutched around Jess, face hidden in his chest.
Then real mortification set in when you came back to your senses and looked up. Your face was only a few inches away from him, close enough to kiss. The smell of laundry and sweat invaded your senses and you didn't know what to make of it. Jess smelled good.
The dim lighting cast the perfect mix of shadow and light, rewarding you with a flattering view of his features. All sharp jawed and boyish charm.
His lips quirked, almost as if he could read your thoughts. Before you knew it, he had grabbed your hand and you were speeding off, deeper into the haunted house.
You felt your heart pounding in your chest, trying to match the pace of your sprinting feet. You could hardly take in the graveyard and mummies for you were too keenly aware of how he gripped your hand with an unspoken promise not to let go.
Where was the boy who laughed at your misery? Why was he suddenly so protective? And the question you tried to ignore: why did it feel good to have him on your side for once?
He pulled you into a dark corner, away from screaming people and grim figures. You squeezed into the tight space together, catching your breath.
You peered around the corner, making sure no one could sneak up on you. When you looked in front of you, there he was again, smirking at you.
You scolded yourself for staring at his lips. You wanted to hit him there, maybe with your own lips. For once, you were glad to have been in a dark room where he couldn't see your blushing cheeks. It was all too confusing.
"What the hell do you think you're doing?" You asked, but your words had no venom as your mind and body rushed through the roller coaster of fear and attraction.
"What? How dare they scare you like that?" He said indignantly, pointing in the house's general direction.
You raised your arms in frustration, "you literally prank me all the time!"
"Yeah, I can do it, but who the hell do they think they are?" He shot back.
"I don't think you're hearing yourself properly and at least it's their job! You--"
Your words were drowned by another scream as you noticed a masked serial k*ller running towards you with a knife. You grabbed Jess' hand this time and took the lead, running deeper into the house.
You ran through doors and hallways, past the zombies and ghosts that came from dark corners. But you could hardly focus when you were too keenly aware of the warm, fluttery feelings that surprised and horrified you. The real danger was the person whose hand you held.
At least masked men and cheap animatronics were make believe. Jess, on the other hand, felt far too real and would linger long after pumpkins withered and leaves bloomed on trees again.
You exited the haunted house, dazed. It was far from the thrill you sought out when you first entered. You were lost in your own thoughts that you didn't realize you were still holding his hand. Jess, for his part, made no move to extracte it.
"You look like you've seen a ghost," Jess quipped after a few moments of silence.
"Very funny," you said drily as you stared straight ahead.
"Come on, let's have some hot cider or spiced latte," he said, motioning to a nearby cafe.
"What? So you could put barbecue sauce in my drink when I'm not looking?" You asked suspiciously, though you found yourself following him.
"That was one time, I never repeat my masterpiece," he said proudly. "Besides, you got ketchup in my soda too so we're even." You laughed at the memory.
"How about we call a truce? We did just survive a horror experience together, that kind of thing bonds people together."
"Jess..." you started, hesitant and let go of his hand.
"Haven't we had enough tricks throughout the years?" He asked, "maybe it's time for a treat. Let me buy you a drink?"
"Can't say no to a free drink," you agreed after a long pause, everyone knew that was a universal law. "Then I can hurl fake spiders at you afterwards?" You asked even though you didn't particularly feel like throwing anything, unless it was your hands in his hair or your mouth on-- nope. You were definitely not thinking unholy thoughts about your enemy.
"You can even toss in fake eyeballs, go all out," he offered generously.
"Fine," you huffed, inwardly kicking all the butterflies that swarmed in your stomach. You liked the idea of a truce, continuing to have him on your side.
"Fine," he echoed, opening the door for you.
You looked at his smile illuminated by the cafe light. For a second, you were caught off guard by how genuine and unguarded it looked. You had a feeling there was a whole other side to him you were about to discover.
It all felt new. Except, perhaps it wasn't. It seemed more like a sudden awareness of something that had been brewing through the years. But there'd be time to sort it out later. For now, you were about to have apple cider with Jess, your enemy and maybe (definte) crush. It was a real treat this Halloween. The rest could wait.

REBLOGS AND LIKES ARE ALWAYS APPRECIATED!
It started as a game. Just a stupid game of 7 minutes in heaven at a house party. It turned into a friends-with-benefits deal cause Y/N and Jess were too stupidly shy to express their feelings yet the sex was enough for both of them. They were dumb hormonal teenagers. But when Y/N needed to go to the bathroom more, her craving for lemonade increased, and her period was late. The two faint lines appeared boldly. When she told Jess his heart sank. They both didn’t know how to feel, but when talk of abortion came for the both of them from a flyer they didn’t have the heart to do it. So they chose to have the baby even though both were scared shitless. When Y/N’s parents found out it was even worse, they told her they would not take over anything. Everything was up to Y/N and Jess, They would not keep or take care of the baby unless she went to school or got a job. Jess’ mother however was displeased. She was a bit afraid her son would follow the path his father did, to abandon Y/N and start something new with another woman and never hear from him again. But as Jess began working more and more to help financially his mother’s worries lessened, Y/N however continued her studies at home getting money from Jess every day to prepare for the arrival of their baby. So when their baby boy Liam finally came after 9 months it was like hot potato. Liam was passed back and forth between the both of them, although both Jess and Y/N liked each other it was hard to see each other so often from work and school. But after a year Jess was shipped off to Stars Hollow, Connecticut to be with his uncle because of his lack of effort in school. So Y/N and Jess decided it would be best for the both of them to make this work and go together. But there were some problems with Luke.
“No,” Luke said as he began making coffee. Jess had his arms in the air and shrugged with a scoff. “Luke, it’s my girlfriend and my kid. I can’t be away from my kid.” Luke looked him up and down “You shouldn’t have been doing that tango kid, 'cause I'm not having a puking and crying kid in my already cramped-up apartment. Jess, I'm sorry but we don’t have space and even if we did your school is one of the priorities along with taking care of both of them.” Lorelai came into the diner like always and sat in the barstool. “Hey! Mr Lukey Danes, Coffee for your very special and loyal customer pretty please with a little cherry on top,” she said snapping her fingers in a joking manner. “Lorelai not now.” Luke scoffed. “What’s going on? What's with the attitude between you men? Did he steal your super secret Krabby patty formula or something?” she asked. Jess rolled his eyes as he went upstairs. Luke grabbed a mug and poured coffee in it “Jess wants to bring his girlfriend and kid to Stars Hollow. But we can’t.” he said simply. Lorelai’s smile faded, “He has a kid..” she asked softly. “Yeah, with some girl named Y/N. She graduated early to take care of their kid and Jess wants both her and his son here but I told him there's no space and I can’t help cause of the diner and-”
“I’ll bring her in.”
Luke looked at Lorelai. Her face wasn’t her joking face or smiling banter like always. But a serious one, her look of almost desperation. Lorelai looked back on when she was pregnant with Rory. How no one helped her and Christopher not even being there. But she saw how disappointed Jess’ face was when she came in. “Lorelai I can’t ask you for that, it’s too much your house is already cramped up,” Luke said. “No, tell Jess to tell Y/N to come, and I'll take her in, besides, it’s only me and a smarty pants who's always in school,” she said seriously. “I know how she probably must feel. I’ll tell Rory and we’ll make adjustments to an old upstairs room,” she said as she got up almost excitedly. “You forgot to pay!” Luke yelled out. “You can cover the bill for me ol’ diner boy!” she yelled out.
Jess got the news and began helping out Rory and Lorelai with moving everything and making sure everything was perfect for when Y/N and Liam arrived. He paid for furniture and sheets while Lorelai and Rory cleaned up some of Rory’s baby furniture to give to Jess and Y/N. Although they were girly it was better than nothing after all. Then suddenly everyone in Stars Hollow now knew Jess Mariano the 17-year-old schoolboy had a son. “Thank you guys so much, for letting us stay, I’m sorry for the bother, Liam cries only when his diaper is wet I promise I’ll try to keep quiet,” Y/N said as she carried Liam into the house while Rory helped with her luggage. “I’ll clean and cook, anything you tell me I’ll do,” she said. Lorelai smiled, “Well, thanks our wallets are crying from takeout every day.” she joked “But seriously it’s fine I was in your shoes before and I understand how hard it is for you to be so young. it’s fine.” Jess came in with bags in his hands filled with baby stuff. “I was gonna surprise you but I guess not,” he said smiling. Y/N sped walked towards him and hugged him while Liam was in between the two.
“I’m glad you're here,” he said softly in her ear. He kissed her softly and pulled away to take Liam from her arms. “Hey.’ Jess smiled at Liam. His black hair shone in the sun from the window as the baby smiled and tugged on Jess’ shirt. “Hopefully you haven't been giving your mom a hard time these past few weeks,” he said to him smiling. Liam laid his head on Jess’ chest as he sucked his pacifier while Jess’ carried him around the house while Rory and Lorelai were giving Y/N a small tour of everything in the House as well as Stars Hollow. Everyone in Stars Hollow was suddenly interested in the new mom and son in town Including Kirk who offered to babysit for the very specific price of 23.99. Although the people were strange (Kirk) and people began asking about her and Liam it was finally Jess and Y/N alone in their room with Liam right in between them.
“I’ve missed you” he whispered to her. His fingers ran through her hair as he looked into her eyes. Y/N closed her eyes as she took in everything. “Me too, just afraid I guess. It’s much quieter than New York I'll say that.” she smiled. She looked down to see Liam softly snoring in between them. Her hands went to the soft black hair he got from Jess as she smiled. “This wasn’t the life I expected, but I’m glad I’m down this path with you and I don’t regret it one bit…” she said softly. Y/N leaned in and kissed Jess softly and passionately. This was their fresh start in life in the small town of Stars Hollow.

HONEST ANSWER — JESS MARIANO
masterlist
pairing: jess mariano x reader

warnings: jealous!jess, angst n then some fluff, swearing, jess is a respectful king once he stops being sad/mad
author’s note: saw this gif and was inspired to write more jealous jess. whoops! (enjoy)
———
———
“That your boyfriend in there?”
Hearing Jess’ voice again almost entirely knocked the wind out of your sails, your eyes blown wide as you turned to face where he stood behind you.
He was watching you carefully, jaw clenched at the inevitability of the answer he didn’t want to hear.
Besides, the way you bit your lip had already practically answered him for you.
It was a telltale sign of worry that he’d always picked up on back in Stars Hollow. And even now that it had been over a year since you’d last seen him, he still knew.
He was your best friend, your confidante, the love of your life though you’d feared to admit it — and when you’d just about plucked up the courage to hint at your feelings before you left for college, he’d been so supportive of you moving away that you figured there was no need to bother telling him if he evidently didn’t feel the same.
Even worse, you’d convinced yourself in that week that maybe he did feel the same… Only to have those hopes utterly shattered by his nonchalance at you being on the other side of the country.
Now you were here, in Philly, right before his eyes — and suddenly the exact heartbreak you’d almost hoped to see in his eyes all that time ago had surfaced and knocked you for six.
It was you who’d chosen to limit your contact, cutting phone calls short and never divulging much information about your college life.
So much so that eventually he figured you’d moved on from your friendship and didn’t need him, when really it just hurt you too much.
“Oh, uh, kind of,” you gulped, given that the relationship was still relatively fresh and it didn’t taste right on your tongue to talk to Jess about it, “Well yeah he—he is.”
He shot you a tight-lipped smile as he nodded, one so forced that you weren’t sure he was even trying to feign happiness, “Nice.”
“Nice?” you furrowed your brows. He’d not even said hello.
“Yeah, nice,” he shrugged, kicking a stone at his feet and shoving his hands in his pockets, “And what brings you guys to Philly, huh? Big romantic getaway?”
The snarky tone in his voice felt like a claw to the heart — it was a tone never usually reserved for you.
Once, you’d have laughed at its sound, but now it just hurt.
“No, he’s—he writes. There’s a small publishing house he wants to talk to about publishing some, uh, stuff. Truncheon?” you didn’t know quite why you felt embarrassed to talk about it when you’d been so supportive before, “I came with him because I had nothing to do this week. What about, um, you?”
Why the fuck did this feel so painfully awkward?
“Truncheon, huh?” he narrowed his eyes, “Well you’re lookin’ right at his best contact.”
You didn’t know what to say for a moment, eyes still blown wide with the shock of even seeing him so abruptly.
“You, uh, w-work for them?”
Another tight-lipped smile and a nod was his only response.
“That’s—that’s amazing, Jess,” you grinned, a glimmer of genuine pride shining through as you thought about all that he might have achieved in your absence, “I’m proud.”
“Jeez, you don’t even know what I do, Y/N,” he scoffed, and the ache in your chest at his tone was impossible to ignore, “You would have if, y’know, you’d ever bothered to ask before you just showed up with your boyfriend.”
You looked down at your feet, taken aback.
“I’m sorry, Jess, it was just,” you paused, knowing now that the inevitable was coming and that you’d have to be honest, “too hard, when we were so far apart.”
He scoffed, rolling his eyes, “Too hard? Too hard to keep in contact with your best friend but clearly super fuckin’ easy to just cut him out of your life?”
You swallowed thickly, feeling a physical pull towards him as you reached your hand out to his shoulder as if to bolster your claim that this wasn’t the case, “No, Jess, it wasn’t easy… I just thought it was for the best. It hurt, and I’m sorry I hurt you too by selfishly trying to protect my own feelings.”
“Yeah, well,” he shrugged, like your words meant absolutely nothing to him, “Tell your boyfriend to look elsewhere for a publisher. Truncheon aren’t looking for anything new right now.”
“Convenient, isn’t it?”
“Yeah I guess it is,” his eyes were almost stony, and you felt your own begin to prick with tears as he shrugged yet again, “Sorry, old pal.”
You’d bickered with Jess plenty of times before, but never like this — he’d never looked at you like he didn’t want to see you until today.
“Jess I’m really sorry,” you couldn’t fight the tears now, your resolve to give back the attitude he was giving you now entirely dissipated, “I’ve missed you so much I—I made a mistake. Please don’t hate me.”
His eyes softened a little, though his brow remained furrowed, “I don’t—God, Y/N, I don’t hate you. I’m just pissed off, and I think I deserve to be. What made it so impossible to just fuckin’ talk to me instead of adding yourself to the long list of people who’ve fucked off out of my life with no explanation?”
That was the final dagger to the heart.
How could you have done exactly what everyone else in his life had and cut him off after all that time?
You loved him so much, so much, and were so afraid of your own feelings that you’d seemingly not even considered his.
“Do you want the honest answer?”
You were exhausted now, and knew your boyfriend would probably come out looking for you soon, so maybe it was time to finally tell the truth.
“Would be nice, yeah.”
“I cut you off because I was in— I really really liked you, Jess. Like, more than as my best friend or whatever,” even after all this time you’d clung on to how you seemed to have adopted his tendency to try and downplay things, “And you were so encouraging about me moving I figured you obviously didn’t care in the same way and I couldn’t stand the idea of pining while you were fine.”
For a minute he didn’t say a word, shaking his head as he chuckled under his breath at the sheer stupidity of what you were telling him.
“So not only did you cut me out of your life, but that meant I missed out on the grand old Y/N love confession?” he was teasing you, and though your heart continued racing at a million miles an hour, you felt the weight of his previously apparent anger dissipate.
“Who said anything about love, Mariano?”
“Oh it was implied,” he smirked, “Some of us are actual writers, y’know? We can read between the lines. Besides, you forget that I know you as well as I do. Like the back of my hand, in fact.”
You shook your head with a laugh, “You’re such a nightmare, you know that right?”
“Oh I pride myself on it, sweet cheeks.”
“Sweet cheeks? Jesus. Anyway, I shouldn’t have done things the way I did,” you briefly glanced behind you, again wondering where the hell your boyfriend was, “Should’ve known well enough it wouldn’t ruin our friendship and would just give you one more thing to take the piss out of me about, really.”
The look that flashed in his eyes at that made you gulp, his eyebrow raised as his smirk only intensified, “Take the piss, huh?”
“Oh no, how could I be so dumb? The great Jess Mariano would never mock me ever!” you gasped sarcastically, hand to your chest.
He rolled his eyes, “Is it really that inconceivable that I felt the same way? That maybe that’s why I tried so hard for so long before we stopped talking? Like you gotta be crazy not to have seen that — have you ever known me to make that much effort?”
You knew now that he was right — feeling all the more stupid for the time you’d gone without talking to him.
“And do you? Did you?” you corrected yourself with a cough, blushing and looking down like a schoolgirl asking out her crush.
He scoffed, taking a step closer to you, “You’re the fuckin’ nightmare actually, Y/N. Of course I did. Of course I do. Pined after you for months like a lovesick puppy and you still think I was fine with you just leaving? I just wanted you to go after what you wanted from your life, and hoped I’d still have a place in it.”
The vulnerability in his tone grew as he continued, and again you felt a pang to your heart.
“I figured you knew how I felt and it was just kinda like… an unspoken thing,” he shrugged, his head dipping, “Should’ve known better and said something, clearly.”
“Jess—,”
“Look, I’ve wasted too much time being pissed off at you already,” he was so near you now that you were sure you’d never seen his eyes so closely as they glimmered at you, “But I’m not gonna be a disrespectful ass and kiss your stupid face right now… even if I want to. Like really bad.”
You gulped, feeling overwhelmed again and blushing crimson as he stepped back away just a touch.
“Just answer me one question, yeah?”
You nodded, probably much too enthusiastically given the low chuckle he let out before his face returned to seriousness, “You happy with him? Was it, uh, worth moving on?”
“He’s… he’s nice, so yes and no.” was just about all you could muster, and it made you feel dirty that you couldn’t give the guy more credit — he’d been good to you and, though he’d never be Jess (because who else but the man himself could?), you had been happy enough with him until now.
“Yes and no?”
“Well I thought I was happy but now I—well he’s never made me feel the way I did the second I saw you and that stupid scowl on your face again,” you shook your head, drawing in a deep breath, “So yes I was happy with him, but no it wasn’t worth moving on. You’ll never be worth moving on from, Mariano.”
The smug smirk was back, and it took everything in you not to kiss it right off his lips as he practically puffed out his chest in victory.
“I’m not going to tell you to break up with him, but I want you to know I still feel the same about you as I did last year,” he pressed a kiss to your forehead, “So you can do with that information what you will.”
Almost as if on cue, your boyfriend finally made his way to your side just as Jess started to walk away.
“Who was that?”
“Oh, uh, someone from back home in Stars Hollow,” you mumbled, eyes fixed on the man walking away to his car.
“Oh, sick,” he laughed, clearly unaware of the tension you were riddled with, “Crazy bumping into them here, then. C’mon it’s cold, let’s head back inside, yeah?”
“Actually—uh, can we—can we talk?”

𝐒𝐀𝐕𝐈𝐎𝐔𝐑 ─ j.m
pairing(s): jess mariano x reader
summary: someone you don’t like wins your basket in the easter competition, but jess is there to save the day.
word count: 2077
warnings/tags: friends to lovers, a guy being a bit full-on [ nothing major , but jess saves the day ] jess being an absolute fluffy softy, jess being boyfriend material!
the dreaded day of the easter basket competition had arrived, and terror had filled your entire body from that very morning. waking up with a pit in your stomach, rory and lane roping you into making one for a date – knowing that randall in your english class is obsessed with the thought of a date with you and had been for months.
you had no hope for the day ahead, you had confided in jess from the moment you agreed to it, running from the square into luke’s diner where jess was reading against the wall of the quiet monday morning. “i’m not participating in this loony town’s stupid traditions, y/n,” jess had told you, much to your dismay of pleading him for help.
“please! if it goes too high a bid i’ll reimburse you, i’ll make a really good meal and we’ll make a day of it. please don’t make me go out with randall carter!” you had asked, trying to ignore the wide smirk across your amused best friends face. jess was thoroughly enjoying it.
he chuckled, book had been thrown on the counter with his arms folded as he listened before leaning towards you. “i’m not going to bid on nonsense like that but i am willing to save you from the date if he wins,” jess had offered.
“jess i don’t want to go out with him, you have to win it!”
“aren’t his parents like super rich?” jess ignored, eyes followed your pained expression as you groaned in dismay from the situation you allowed rory and lane to force you into. you had already signed your name up, taylor knew, there was no going back now.
you knew he couldn’t bid too high, and you didn’t expect jess to, you were just desperate. you had shot down randall far too many times for your liking and he was still willing to try and win you over. jess had hated the guy from the start, but you knew he hated practically everyone.
“you swear to save me from him?” you asked, finger pointed and pressed against jess’ shirt, eyes wide and intimidating jess. he had a teasing glint in his eye, lopsided smirk maintained as he raises one hand, using his finger to cross his heart, ‘hope to die’ he finished with before luke scolded him for slacking during shift.
so, when jess winked at you from the other side of the crowd, your legs slowly stopped shaking. maybe it would be okay, knowing that jess was more than willing to jump in and save you from your dreaded enemy – who was only yards ahead of you with a prideful stride which could only be for one reason.
“fifty dollars!” randall starts with, your mouth immediately gaping at the price he was willing to begin with in order to bag a date with the person he knows doesn’t reciprocate feelings. you felt bad shooting him down at the start, but as he became more persistent, the less empathetic you were.
“sixty,” jess interjects. your head snaps round, quite like luke who was beside him and you watch as his uncle swats his arm in dismay. jess doesn’t have that amount of money to throw around, he worked in his uncle’s diner in his spare time – why would he bid a high amount on a lousy easter basket in order to help you?
“eighty,” you were defeated upon randall’s response, all hope in the chance of jess winning quickly dissipates as you watch jess hesitate. however, when jess saw randall’s smirk and luke’s warned gaze he’s quick to jump on another bet, “a hundred dollars!”
“oh, a hundred dollars, folks! can anyone go higher or do we have a winner?” taylor ramped up the crowd while luke can be heard screaming at his nephew, profanities and light smacks against jess’ shoulder, ordering him to ‘quit it, ya hear me?’
“a hundred and twenty,” replies randall, face full of stream while looking back at jess, strived with motivation and purpose. jess looks back towards you, and you try to plead him to stop, he said he wouldn’t bid high or partake, yet here he was willing to spend a hundred dollars to save you.
he shrugs in apology, well out of his price range and the sound of taylor announcing randall the winner, you smile at him before striding towards the stage where randall waits with the basket full of food.
just as you leave the crowd, you catch sight of jess who throws you another wink before crossing his heart one more time. and you pray to yourself that jess didn’t take long to save the day, randall’s hand all-too close to you as you walk away.
it had been god-awful. randall was far too worth trying, it came across desperate. he boasted of the prior girlfriends he had in hopes you thought he was experienced but only made you realise how insignificant you would be, after telling you of his date last week despite asking you out for months.
your legs swung across the bridge overlooking the lake, for each moment of silence you enjoyed by the trickle of water and swoosh of the trees – only to be ruined when randall’s deep voice undercuts with another foul statement.
your fingers were picking at the crust of fancy bread you choose from the bakery, not willing to eat but wanting to seem preoccupied while randall tells you all about his high grades. that is until a voice interrupts, “oh, i absolutely hate to break this lovely little date you’re on. nice spread, huh?”.
a grin spreads across your face at the voice from behind you, and both of you turn around to see jess standing, hands in his pockets, rolling on the balls of his feet with a contained smirk you could see from just his eyes.
“you bet,” randall replies while continuing to eat the crackers you also brought. jess’ undercut scowl grows soft when he looks from the boy and to you, “luke wants you back for shift.” you’re smirking at him, face unseen by randall as you lean back and raise your hands in faux dismay.
however, randall isn’t amused, “no fair! we’re on a date, mariano.” jess looks disgusted, looking at the horrible attempt at a date – randall sitting like he owns the place, cheese stuck to the sides of his mouth.
through gritted teeth, jess continues, “sorry, rules are rules.” randall taps you, causing you to break your gaze from jess and to look at him instead, “you said you had the day off.” you falter, mouth agape in thought of what to reply, but your saviour steps in once more, “busy day calls for the best staff. y’know, randall, with all the basket dates going on.”
you sigh in relief, making your leave to stand while jess extends his hand to help you up. he wears a wide smile, eyes prideful and gleaming at you as you smirk back at him. his hand doesn’t leave yours, remained intertwined while you use your free one to dust your outfit off from any marks.
“that doesn’t make any sense,” randall interjects the moment, “why would people bring their baskets into a café and eat the food?”. jess knew randall was smart, he actually tried in school but he was an idiot at some common sense that jess could use to his advantage, a small ‘huh’ leaves jess before he replies, “y’know, randall, a lot of things in life don’t make sense”
you’re wide-eyed watching jess, there was something so attractive about him saving the day, speaking up for you, holding your hand. you were entrapped by the boy you called your best friend. he leans past you, a hand extended to randall, “basket, please.”
with a begrudged look to the boy with dripping sarcasm, randall hands it over, feet defeatedly swinging off the bridge as jess looms over him with a look randall didn’t want to cross. you whisper to jess, “ever the gentleman,” you’re both turning away, still hand in hand, and jess glances at you before replying, “well, a gentleman keeps his promise.”
and before you knew it a few footsteps ahead, you broke out into a run, hand intertwined with the boy who saved the day – you both laughing as you left the scene, forgetting all about the try-hard randall defeatedly in his place.
the woods were quiet, the crunching off the leaves getting lower in volume and you both slow down, tired breaths and speckled laughter turning into a comfortable silence paired with the birds whistling in the trees.
every moment you had with jess was one you wanted to mentally keep forever. a mind full of jess keepsakes you could look back and fawn over someone you had grown so comfortable with, your person, the guy you could go to with just about everything. sure, he was sarcastic but he wouldn’t judge – maybe a joke, here and there, but if it’s an upsetting issue jess was nothing but a comforting shoulder, kind and serene voice you could fall asleep to.
you glance at him, and his lope-sided smile hasn’t left his gorgeous face, even when you catch him staring. you can’t break away, a trance you didn’t mind being stuck in forever and something shifts between you both. jess tugs on your hand so you’re standing in front of him, gentle and reassuring squeezes as you feel your back meet a tree.
the view of jess with the scenery behind him, trees floating in the wind, sunlight escaping between the leaves – he was ethereal, and you almost didn’t believe this moment to be true. that’s until the sound of the basket dropping to the ground brings you back.
his hand leaves yours, slowly moving to your jaw while his eyes delicately scan your face in a way that your knees feel weak, jess’ lids half closed before he moves closer to you. you find it hard not to smile during the kiss, jess delicately moving his lips to yours in a moment you have dreamt several times before.
jess’ lips were desperate, nose bumping yours when he tilts his head the other way and you tug on his acdc t-shirt to keep you grounded, obsessed with the feeling of him so close. pulling away, jess glances at your kiss-struck face before pressing another quick peck, both of you wearing tired but loving smiles.
“we should probably make a date out of the remaining food, huh?” you chuckle before agreeing, “oh, there’s still a lot there. turns out randall hates pasta, a long list of fruit, any form of potatoes, and … pretty much everything in here apart from crackers and cheese.”
jess is too busy watching your face, sparkling eyes and your lips moving, you barely say the last word before jess is kissing you again. it’s short but enough to have you at a loss of words, breath-taking.
your trying to regain your composure when he pulls away, his hand holding yours once more while leaning down to grip the basket he abandoned minutes before. “randall… god i hate that guy,” jess murmurs when you both begin to walk in a random direction, unsure where your walk will take you.
“me too. he said my sleeves should be a longer length the moment we caught a moment alone,” you complain, hands swinging between you both as jess scoffs, “insufferable idiot. i mean who hates your pasta? you make the best in town.”
“i know!” you reply, jess pecking you once more with his knowing smirk planted firmly on his face.
“and you look great. you always do.” you feel warm from the compliment, blood rushing to your face as you return with a small, “thank you.” jess turns away from you, walking you through the woods to find a good date spot where he can have a proper moment with you, a place he can keep you to himself for a little longer before returning to the chaos that is stars hollow.
jess squeezes your hand, “it’s good for me anyway, he lost his chances.” you weren’t used to jess being romantic, and you can tell from his lack of eye contact and blushed cheeks that he wasn’t either, but you smile before planting a kiss to his flushed skin, “like he or anyone else had a chance from the moment you got here.”

The Page Turner
Jess Mariano x fem!reader
Warnings: none
The small bell above the door of ‘Luke’s Diner’ rang, signaling yet another customer entering the familiar space. Jess Mariano didn’t bother looking up from the book in his hand. He was halfway through a chapter, completely absorbed in the words, but then he heard a voice—a new voice.
“Hey, can I get a cup of coffee to go?”
That caught his attention.
Jess looked up to see you, standing at the counter with a soft smile. You had y/h/c hair that fell just past your shoulders and y/e/c eyes that sparkled with curiosity as you glanced around the diner. You weren’t a regular, that much was clear, and Stars Hollow wasn’t exactly known for new faces. Intrigued, Jess shut his book with a quiet thud.
“Sure thing,” Luke grunted from behind the counter. “You new in town?”
You chuckled, a sound that made Jess’s chest tighten for reasons he couldn’t quite explain. “Yeah, just visiting for a while. My aunt lives here.”
“Ah, got it,” Luke said, pouring the coffee into a paper cup and sliding it across the counter. “That’ll be two bucks.”
As you reached for your wallet, Jess found himself lingering on every detail—the way you carried yourself with an ease that was foreign to the chaotic rush of the diner, the calm confidence in your voice. You were… different.
He wasn’t sure why he spoke up, but the words left his mouth before he could stop them. “You won’t like that coffee.”
You turned toward him, surprised by the comment. “What makes you say that?”
Jess smirked, leaning back in his chair. “Just trust me. Luke’s coffee is basically hot mud in a cup. You want good coffee, you gotta try Weston’s, down the street.”
Luke shot Jess a look, but you seemed amused by the banter. You raised an eyebrow. “Is that so?”
Jess shrugged. “If you like actually enjoying what you drink, yeah.”
You grinned, a spark of playful challenge in your eyes. “Well, I guess I’ll have to see for myself, then.”
Before Jess could reply, you grabbed your coffee, thanked Luke, and turned to leave. But just before you stepped outside, you looked back at him, your y/e/c eyes locking with his for a brief second that seemed to stretch into eternity. There was something in that look, something that made Jess sit up a little straighter.
And then you were gone, the bell jingling as the door closed behind you.
Jess stared at the empty space where you had stood, his mind racing in a way that it hadn’t in a long time. He hadn’t felt this kind of pull toward anyone in forever—if ever.
“She’s outta your league,” Luke said from behind the counter, shaking his head as he wiped down the surface.
Jess scoffed, but couldn’t hide the slight smile tugging at his lips. “Yeah, we’ll see about that.”
---
The next day, Jess found himself walking past Weston’s Coffee almost instinctively. He wasn’t usually one to go out of his way for anyone, but something about you had gotten under his skin. He didn’t know if it was the way you had smiled at him like you could see right through his smart remarks or the fact that you didn’t seem fazed by his sarcasm. Either way, he wanted to know more.
As he passed the window, there you were, sitting alone at one of the tables, a book open in front of you and that same paper cup from Luke’s in your hand. You were sipping it slowly, a look of concentration on your face as you read.
Without really thinking, Jess opened the door and walked in.
You glanced up, surprised but not unpleasantly so, and gave him a small smile. “Let me guess—here to tell me Weston’s has better coffee?”
Jess shrugged, slipping into the chair across from you without asking. “Just checking to see if I was right.”
You held up the cup, now almost empty, and smirked. “Luke’s wasn’t that bad. But maybe I’ll give Weston’s a try next time.”
He grinned, leaning back in his chair. “Told you.”
You closed your book, studying him with curious eyes. “So, what’s your deal?”
Jess blinked, a little taken aback by the directness of the question. “My deal?”
“Yeah,” you said, leaning forward a little. “You seem like the kind of guy who’s always got something going on. So, what’s your deal?”
He chuckled, impressed by how straightforward you were. Most people didn’t dare try to get to know him, especially this quickly. “No deal,” he said, shrugging. “Just a guy who reads too much and drinks bad coffee.”
You laughed, the sound light and genuine. “I find that hard to believe.”
Jess raised an eyebrow, intrigued. “Oh yeah? And what’s your deal?”
You smiled. “Y/N, visiting Stars Hollow for a bit. Trying to avoid too much small-town gossip.”
He nodded. “Good luck with that.”
There was a comfortable silence for a moment, and Jess found himself surprised at how easy it was to sit here with you. Usually, he had his guard up, always ready with a sarcastic remark or a way to push people away. But with you, he felt… calm.
After a beat, you glanced at the book in front of him. “What are you reading?”
Jess lifted the book, showing you the cover. “*On the Road.* You?”
You turned your book around to show him the cover of a novel he hadn’t heard of but found himself interested in. “A little something for the train rides back home,” you said with a shrug.
“I’ll have to check it out,” Jess said, and he meant it. He liked that you were a reader. It gave you both something to share.
As the conversation flowed, Jess realized he was genuinely enjoying himself. You weren’t intimidated by him, and you weren’t overly interested in the mystery people usually tried to solve. You were just… you.
And as you sipped the last of your coffee, Jess found himself thinking that maybe, just maybe, he’d finally met someone worth sticking around for.

“Jess?”
He thought he was hallucinating. Over the years, he’d sworn he’d heard the swell of her laugh once or twice, maybe even the melodic sound of her voice deep in the throes of a lively debate as he passed through a bar here and there. Since he’d moved back to New York, he often thought (dreaded, really) he’d run into her at some reading, some fucking show in Brooklyn. Yet, it never happened. Somehow, in the city of 8 million people where you always seem to run into your exes, he’d miraculously never run into Rory Gilmore.
Tonight, his luck might have finally run out.
--
Jess Mariano & Rory Gilmore run into each other on the Downtown A Train one evening, a few years after their last encounter. Friendship and sweet, sweet tension ensue.
___________
So I finally did the thing and wrote a literati fic and I don't know what to do with myself because I finally finished this one shot after months of writer's block! Considering a series of music/song-inspired literati fics, but we'll see lmao
Please read it if you'd like, especially if you're a huge NYC MTA nerd like me and love the subway setting for reunions and ANGST!

insecure Jess Mariano trying to rub his relationship with fem!reader in every guys face every chance he gets because he wants to prove that he’s the one for her and doesn’t want her to think there’s a better guy out there for her . She notices his behavior and later reassures him that he’s enough and that he’s the only one for her (+ her saying I love you for the first time 🤭)
𝟷𝚔 || 𝐈𝐍𝐒𝐄𝐂𝐔𝐑𝐈𝐓𝐈𝐄𝐒
♡ ︎ꜱᴜᴍᴍᴀʀʏ: Jess is insecure about you leaving him for someone better.
♡ ︎ᴡᴀʀɴɪɴɢꜱ: Insecure Jess
♡ ︎ꜱʜɪᴘ: Jess Mariano x Reader
Jess’s hand tightens around yours, his thumb brushing across your knuckles, but there’s tension in the way his fingers grip yours. You glance up at him, catching the way his eyes are fixed across the courtyard, narrowed with barely concealed irritation.
You follow his gaze and sigh softly when you see the source of his mood: Tristan. He’s lounging on one of the benches, smirking in your direction as if he’s waiting for you to acknowledge him. Jess notices it every time, and lately, it's been getting under his skin more than usual.
Jess doesn’t waste any time. “Hey, babe,” he says, louder than necessary as he pulls you closer to his side. “You cold? I’ve got your jacket in my bag. Want me to grab it?”
You raise a brow at him. “I’m fine, Jess.”
“Are you sure? I don’t want my girl catching a cold.” He practically spits out the last two words, glaring pointedly at Tristan, who’s pretending not to notice, though you see the twitch of a smirk playing on his lips.
You stifle a sigh, feeling the familiar heat of frustration rising in your chest. This isn’t the first time Jess has done this, and you’ve started to notice a pattern: every time a guy so much as glances your way, Jess is quick to claim you like you might slip through his fingers at any moment.
You tug gently at his hand, pulling him away from the courtyard and out of Tristan’s line of sight. He follows, but the stiffness in his shoulders doesn’t ease up. You walk in silence for a few moments, waiting for him to speak, but when he doesn’t, you stop and turn to face him.
“Jess, what’s going on?”
He shifts, running a hand through his hair, avoiding your eyes. “Nothing,” he mutters, but you can see the tightness in his jaw, the way his foot taps impatiently on the pavement.
“Don’t ‘nothing’ me,” you say softly. “You’ve been acting like this every time we’re around other guys. Like you’re trying to prove something.”
He huffs, looking anywhere but at you. “What do you want me to say? That I don’t like the way they look at you? That I know every guy in this place would line up for a shot if you weren’t with me?”
You blink, taken aback by the frustration lacing his voice. “Jess…”
“Look, I get it, okay?” he cuts in, voice rougher now. “I’m not like them. I’m not some rich kid from Chilton or some golden boy with a perfect future. I’m the guy everyone warns you to stay away from. So, yeah, maybe I’m insecure. Maybe I’m scared you’ll wake up one day and realize you could do better.”
His words hit you hard, and your heart clenches at the vulnerability he’s showing, even if he’s trying to hide it behind his usual tough exterior. You take a step closer, placing a hand on his chest.
“Jess,” you say softly, waiting until he finally meets your gaze. His brown eyes are clouded with doubt, and you can feel the weight of all the things he doesn’t say pressing between you.
“I don’t want anyone else,” you say firmly, holding his gaze. “I want you. Not Tristan. Not anyone else. Just you.”
He doesn’t say anything, his lips pressing into a thin line like he’s waiting for the other shoe to drop.
“And if you think for one second that there’s a ‘better’ guy out there for me, you’re wrong. You’re it, Jess. You’re enough. More than enough.”
You reach up, cupping his face in your hands, brushing your thumbs over his cheekbones. “I love you, Jess. No one else. You.”
His breath hitches, eyes widening as your words sink in. For a moment, he just stares at you, like he’s not sure he heard you right. Then, before you can say anything else, he pulls you into his arms, holding you so tightly it feels like he’s afraid you’ll disappear if he lets go.
“You… you love me?” he murmurs, voice uncharacteristically soft against your hair.
You smile into his chest, squeezing him just as tightly. “Yes, I love you. How many times do I have to say it?”
He pulls back just enough to look at you, and the vulnerability in his eyes is replaced by something softer—relief, maybe, and something else that looks like wonder.
“I love you too,” he whispers, his voice almost reverent, like he can’t quite believe it. Then he kisses you, slow and tender, like he’s pouring all the things he’s too scared to say into that one moment.
When you finally pull away, his forehead rests against yours, and for the first time all day, he seems relaxed. “Sorry for being a jealous idiot.”
You chuckle, brushing a strand of hair from his face. “It’s okay. Just… try to remember that you don’t have to prove anything. I’m not going anywhere.”
He smirks, though there’s still a softness in his eyes. “Good. Because I’m not letting you go.”

20 Questions for Fic Writers.
Thank you to @foxyanon for both tagging me and giving me a clean copy of the questions so this did not have to wait until after work.
1. how many works do you have on AO3?
Just one, it's old and unimportant. I'm actually about to private it as I no longer like writing fanfic for real people.
2. what's your total AO3 word count?
Since I don't really post to AO3, I'm going to try to guess my word count from Word.
I would guess, just knowing the size of some of my larger works and how many things I fucking have in there, it would be at least 500k. Probably more. Y'all see the length of shit I post and I don't have nearly everything posted.
3. what fandoms do you write for?
Currently, HOTD, TLK, Assassin's Creed and Skyrim. Check out my requests to see which fandoms I'm willing to write for!
4. top five fics by kudos
So, my top 5 fics on here are probably
Sweet Sister (Aemond x Reader x Jace, canon)
Keeping Up With The Targaryens (SMAU Aegon x reader)
Player 3 Found (SMAU Jace x reader x Aemond, no targcest)
we can't be friends (Aemond, modern)
Forged From Death (Sihtric x reader, canon era)
This is a guess, but I know Sweet Sister and Keeping Up are my most popular ones.
5. do you respond to comments?
I try, unfortunately most of my time online is also while I'm working so things do slip by me. However I do try to stay on top of my asks and my inbox, so if you ever need to make sure I see something, those are the best ways. Unless you are in my discord server, then just message me on there.
6. what is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
It's no where close to the end, but just for what I have planned, I think my angstiest thing will be "Dragon of Valhalla".
For one shots, either "Too Sweet" (a personal favorite) or "we can't be friends"
7. what's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
What I have planned for the future of Out of Time is probably the happiest. Mostly because that is my "fix it fic".
Although when I post Alisanne's fic, that will get happy ending. Also a fix it fic.
8. do you get hate on fics?
I've not received hate, thankfully, of any sort.
This is not an invitation to start my friends are crazy (lovingly) and they will ride in battle for me before I even notice it's happened.
9. do you write smut?
Yes! Maybe not well. But I do write it.
10. craziest crossover?
"Dragon of Valhalla". It's combining a fantasy show, a historical fiction drama show, and a historical fiction fantasy video game. Truly, the deepest of brainrots.
11. have you ever had a fic stolen?
No. But again, not an invitation. See above.
12. have you ever had a fic translated?
Not to my knowledge! If anyone is interested, ever, please reach out so I can consider it!
13. have you ever co-written a fic before?
Yes! Many times in fact. It was a lot easier as a high schooler who had no life otherwise.
14. all time favorite ship?
Fuck. Y'all asking the wrong person, I'm full of bi panic and my favorite ship changes A LOT because of it.
Some of my favorites though would be
Fred Weasley x Hermione Granger (back when I read HP fanfic and participated in the community)
Jess Mariano x Rory Gilmore
Robb Stark x Margaery Tyrell x Danerys Targaryen (crackship yes do I care no I love them and they should have met and dominated)
15. what's a wip you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
It's a private project that few people know about. I intend to finish all my things, but brain doing brain things is hard.
16. what are your writing strengths?
I think I can "emotion" really well. Make you understand it as a reader, make you feel it, without necessarily giving a name to it.
17. what are your writing weaknesses?
Smut.
18. thoughts on dialogue in another language?
I only speak English so you'll probably never catch me include it unless it's High Valyrian. I don't trust Google translate. HOWEVER, I do genuinely think it's a beautiful thing.
19. first fandom you wrote in?
Harry Potter 💀
20. favorite fic you've written?
Probably, legitimately, "Out of Time". It was my first genuine dance into HoTD fandom creating. It was my first idea in years.
I had originally written it as an Alisanne fanfiction, actually. But I didn't think anyone would read OC content and so I made it x reader, and lost passion for it in the process.
Idk who has done this, but here are some no pressure tags.
