🥤 ⇢ recommend an author or fanfic you love
Recently, a friend of mine had just gotten back from DragonCon in Atlanta.
I'm not going to lie. It was definitely not my scene. We didn't plan very well and I knew very little about this convention other than what I had heard from stories.
Not to deter other people from going. I'm sure it's very enjoyable to the right niche. But it just wasn't my cup of tea. We got there a little afternoon on Friday, and I was ready to go home by that evening. I was literally standing in line to go to a Lord of the rings party, scrolling through the schedule for the rest of the weekend, desperate to find something that I would enjoy.
And lo and behold, there was an hour Q&A and meet and greet with Jim Butcher.
I'm recommending him because not only am I reading back through and absolutely loving his fantasy sci-fi series about Harry Dresden, but I'm also recommending the audio books. They're narrated by James Marsters (Yes, That James Marsters), And it's so early in the 2000s as well as his voice acting career that the audios that are switched to digital still have the moniker of switching disc. It's very cute and very nostalgic, and very funny when you're not expecting it.
📚 ⇢ what's the last thing you wrote down in your notes app?
From Google docs - I was updating my resume and making a listing for my Etsy store.
From keep notes - The Emojis and the questions that went with this post 🤣

I'm really in it now ... Two nights ago I dreamed I was scrolling Tumblr and someone had posted pictures that Anna and Michael had gotten married in a very small garden wedding (Anna was wearing a lovely white slip dress and has flowers in her hair, and Michael had a grey suit) and everyone was outraged because the Tennants weren't there.
Then last night I had a dream with David (young David... His hair was awful!!) as the doctor and having a big confrontation with the villain (I don't know how we got to this point) and anyway David's doctor said something to talk the villain down and I think it was James Marsters, and then the villian says, "I know! I was you" and everyone laughed because apparently the villain was the doctor from the future and the audience already knew that...
So anyway, even though I rarely have dreams about them (the last time I dreamed about David Tennant, it was pre Good Omens 2 and he was at a convention and I won a short exclusive limo ride with him and he was upset he wasn't my favorite doctor but very happy when I told him I loved his Scrooge McDuck) I guess they are on my mind right now... For absolutely no reason...

@theundertakeriscoming asked and so I shall answer!
The 52nd sentence in my current fic runs thus:
“It can be done but it can also be risky - only needs one person to spot it happening and call the police; next thing they’ve got a BOLO on the truck and you’re looking at a whole bunch of admin.”
First online fic… I think the first one that I actually published (AO3) is called The Captain & His Favourite Toy. It’s still not finished because I ran out of steam on it and also I had the ‘bright idea’ of writing a Character x Reader fic where it wasn’t revealed whether the reader was male or female. Fucking nightmare. Stupid idea. But I still love Captain John Hart.
My first fandom was Buffy the Vampire Slayer - mainly because of Spike (of course).
I do not remember my first email address but I do know that it was Hotmail.
Have I ever been to a Con? Oh, goodness SO MANY. Mostly UK but have also been to one in Amsterdam and fun fact - my first EVER con… I flew over to Louisville, KY for that. I’ve been to regular signing cons - including the hell that is London Film & Comic Con (I only do that one if they have someone I’m desperate to meet and that doesn’t happen often), right through to tiny little affairs in small villages. I’ve also done cons where the event is dedicated to one particular show - the most off the hook one of those I ever attended was Starfury’s Miracle Day 2 where the organiser had basically the entire main cast of Torchwood, plus James Marsters. I would try and explain the things that took place that weekend but I’d only fail to convey it properly and you probably wouldn’t believe me anyway. The most recent convention I attended was Monopoly Events ‘For The Love of Wrestling’ back in April - they had a lovely mix of guests there and already looking forward to their March 2024 event - they have pretty much said that they are trying to bring Takes over (they are the only UK event organiser to have ever brought him to the UK).
One trope I hate… probably good vs evil. Guaranteed to make me tune out.
Favourite season - Autumn, without a doubt. Cooler temperatures, pretty colours, the smell of fresh, damp soil and bonfire smoke in the air - I adore it!

‘Star Wars,’ 'Superman & Lois,’ ‘Doctor Who,’ ‘Buffy’ Guests Among Next Set Of Fan Expo New Orleans Celebrities
Tumblr media
FAN EXPO New Orleans today announced its second set of celebrity commitments, and for fans of some of the most popular entertainment franchises, it’s an absolute bonanza. Among the guests now attending the annual extravaganza, January 10-12, 2025, at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center, are original Star Wars standout Anthony Daniels, “Superman & Lois” headliners Tyler Hoechlin and Bitsie Tulloch, “Doctor Who” Thirteenth Doctor Jodie Whittaker and “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” star James Marsters among nine newcomers to the lineup.
The sci-fi drama “Resident Alien” (Alice Wetterlund and Sara Tomko) and teen romance “High School Musical” (Corbin Bleu, Lucas Grabeel) are also well-represented in the additions with stars of those programs on board.
Daniels, best known to fans as “C-3PO” across the Star Wars franchise, has more than 100 acting, producing and writing credits. Apart from the dozens of appearances as the beloved droid, the British native portrayed "Tak" in the 2018 film Solo and had a recurring role in the "Ghosts of Albion" series, and UK's “The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady.” Daniels has written extensively about his experiences, especially in his “New Improved Wonder Column” in the original Star Wars Insider magazine.
Hoechlin stars as “Clark Kent/Superman” in the CW series “Superman & Lois,” now in its fourth season. He also earned attention for his role as "Derek Hale" on the hit MTV series "Teen Wolf” and his breakout performance came at 15, starring alongside Tom Hanks in the critically acclaimed Road to Perdition (2002).
Tulloch was already familiar to genre fans for appearances as “Lois Lane” in DC hits “Arrow,” “The Flash,” “Batwoman,” “Supergirl” and others, and for her work in The Artist, Concussion and “Grimm” before vaulting to prominence in the intrepid reporter role alongside Hoechlin in the current series.
Whittaker took her star turn as the Thirteenth Doctor, and first female in the role, on the revived “Doctor Who” series in 2017. Additionally, she played opposite another “Doctor Who” alum, David Tennant, in the British ITV drama series “Broadchurch” and narrates the animated children’s show “Ready Eddie Go!”
Millions of fans worldwide first got to know Marsters as "Spike" in the hits "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Angel." With film roles in Dragon Ball and P.S. I Love You and guest TV appearances on "Smallville," "Without a Trace," "Warehouse 13," a recurring role on "Witches of East End" and many others, the multi-talented Marsters is also a singer-songwriter who has performed sold-out concerts on three continents.
They join an already impressive lineup that includes four beloved stars of the Back to the Future trilogy, Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Lea Thompson and Tom Wilson, celebrating the 40th anniversary of the first installment in the franchise; the “Smallville” trio of Tom Welling, Michael Rosenbaum and Kristin Kreuk; plus "Firefly” standout Alan Tudyk.
FAN EXPO New Orleans features the biggest and best in pop culture: movies, TV, music, artists, writers, exhibitors, cosplay, with three full days of themed programming to satisfy every fandom.
New Orleans is the first event on the 2025 FAN EXPO HQ calendar; the full schedule is available at fanexpohq.com/home/events/.

I met James Marsters at a convention a few years back, and one of the fan questions was about seeing red. I think he's said it multiple times too, but he said he hated doing that scene, was completely against it, and has vowed to never act that kind of scene ever again. I can only imagine how traumatic it was for Sarah :(
Oh wow, that is awful :( Good for him for refusing to do more scenes like that. Sarah had been actively fighting against Spuffy for that entire season, so it was probably very traumatic for her, too. Although that scene in “Seeing Red” is definitely the most disturbing and unsettling, the scene in “Dead Things” in the Bronze is almost just as bad, IMO. I wonder how James felt about that scene, too. It just felt like BtVS was a show that should be safe from shit like that, at least concerning Buffy. She’s the chosen one and has literal superpowers, so it is particularly jarring to see someone with that kind of power in a situation where they’re completely powerless.

So glad to find someone else who also gets uncomfortable with these show concerts! I just can't watch any of these promotion videos, I get super uncomfortable, both from second hand embarrassment and also the idea of actors having to do these things...I feel all squirmy just thinking about it!
Yeah this has always been an issue I’ve had, like celebrity/fan interactions of any kind really squick me out unless it’s the most very basic shyly getting something signed variety.  I frequented the local convention circuit as a vendor and cosplayer and RELIGIOUSLY avoided celebrity interactions and the autograph area.  Like, I think I attended one(1) actor panel and it was James Marsters (who was hilarious and lovely but I nearly had to get up and leave during the Q&A).
So yeah, honestly any kind of unscripted show really makes me uncomfortable because the idea of people being forced to put on that social display for an audience just drives me nuts, but especially when the fan fervor is intense.  And, you know, I know like in this case the actors seem totally cool with it, but still I CANNOT.

So was anyone going to tell me there was an admitted attempted rapist in BtVS’s writers room or did I really have to learn that myself?
Was there some fact checking or something that debunked this and that’s why nobody talks about this? Even when recent events lead to listing and spreading of all the horrible things that were going on behind the scenes on this show, I didn’t hear anything about this. I’m hoping that’s why, please enlighten me.
Because here I am, never watched the show except sporadically, happen to go on a clip watching kick and watch James Marsters at a convention talk about The Rape Scene, and he talks about the writer who came up with the idea.
Talks about how that writer had attempted to rape an ex in college, as a last ditch attempt to fix things between them (?!) and used that as inspiration for Spike and Buffy. About how that writer even seemingly justified the scene (and presumably the real attempted rape) by saying that because Buffy (and the rl almost victim, in the writer’s attempted rapist’s estimation) had the physical capacity to defend herself it wasn’t that bad.
So the most controversial and hated scene in Buffy history exists because someone in that writer’s room had attempted to rape somebody and admitted to it.
The only reason I can think of that this has gone uncommented on is because sometime in the past everyone did talk about it and it was debunked. God I’m hoping that’s the case, because honestly I just lied.
I can think of another reason.
The fact is that that clip had a number of comments underneath it saying that the commenters were still unhappy with the scene but were relieved to hear that it had come from a female writer. Apparently the fact that this female writer had specifically written the scene because of her experience trying to rape her ex boyfriend wasn’t really the pertinent point to these people.
Seriously, what the fuck.

Finale Spec: Cas and Spike
Maybe I will make a longer spec post about this later BUT the trailer and the dialogue about Dean saving the world gives me very strong “Buffy” finale vibes.
***BUFFY SPOILERS below***
.
.
.
In the “Buffy” finals the final battle concludes with Spike dying and closing the hellmouth, completing his redemption arc and providing a tragic but affecting end to the love story with Buffy. She even tells him, “I love you,” to which he says, “No you don’t, but thanks for saying it.” (FWIW, I think she does, even though Spike has been the only character to be consistently correct about the feelings people have for one another throughout the series. It’s just not a stereotypically romantic kind of love.)
This was all negated by the decision to resurrect Spike by popular demand on the final season of “Angel” because fans freaked the fuck out at losing Spike, even in such a heroic and poetic way. I was one of those fans and I am an unabashed Spike fangirl (even with/especially with the problematic shit that accompanies his character) and I was happy to see him back. But, narratively? It was kind of appropriate. It was the logical conclusion of a redemption arc and a love story that honestly didn’t have great long-term possibilities, what with one being being human and one not (but with a soul by the end).
I’ve written before about the parallels between Cas and Spike, particularly the way in which both grew into far more central characters than had originally been intended because of stellar performances, great onscreen chemistry, and audience reaction. Spike started the series as a straight-up villain but the character gained nuance and sympathy (especially when played against the relatively wooden Angel). Joss Whedon was apparently incredibly annoyed by this turn of events and wanted Spike to stay evil and never be a romantic interest for Buffy. James Marsters apparently wanted their romantic plotline to remain forever unrequited, with Spike never being good enough for the love of the heroine.
As it turned out, both lost out to popular demand. After a torrid affair in S6 (still one of the hottest things to ever hit network TV imo) that took place after Buffy returned from the dead, Spike went to win back his soul after committing an unforgivable act (attempted rape). In the final season, he returned as a hero himself. It made sense, then, for Spike to literally save the world thanks to his love for Buffy.
But, man, it was a fucking bummer!! I mean, it was a tribute to his character and it’s clearly immensely meaningful to Buffy. But none of us wanted to see our fan favorite dead after all that! You see where I’m going with this, I’m sure. Cas hasn’t ever been straight-up evil, but he’s occupied gray areas of moral ambiguity throughout the series. He doesn’t precisely have a “redemption arc” (or shouldn’t, since imo he hasn’t done anything that needs it since the whole Godstiel thing 7 seasons ago). But narratively he has served the same function for Dean that Spike did for Buffy for much of the show; both are more than human, neither hero could possibly have succeeded alone, both Spike and Cas love (and are in love with) their humans and would do anything to help them in their quests. I think it makes an unfortunate amount of sense for Cas to die in the same way or for the same reason Spike did.
I don’t want this!! And I didn’t want it for Spike either!! And at least--at LEAST!--in that case fandom got the satisfaction of plenty of hot vampire-on-slayer action, plus very sincere confessions of romantic feelings. I think it’s possible that we will get a parallel moment pre-death where Dean tells Cas that he loves him, just as Buffy did for Spike. But I think that will be it and we’ll be left to interpret it as we will. I’d love to be wrong about that too, of course, but thinking with my analytic mind that knows pop culture conventions instead of my poor, sad Cas-loving heart...I see why they might be doing this. Those bastards.
As I’ve said, I’d been hoping that Cas would choose to give up his grace and become human and that that was his sacrifice, the end of his arc where he struggles with his dual nature, and the way for him and Dean to be happy in some ambiguous future. But...I don’t know if TPTB are going to consider that big enough or final enough. They want Cas to be a hero and, unfortunately for us, in the SPN universe heroism appears to exist one-to-one on painful sacrifice.
I’d like to be wrong! But I’m just saying now that if this does happen it’s far from unprecedented and not totally inexplicable. Let’s cross our fingers though.
