Lil' Oathkeepers: How-to

So. You've finished writing for your assigned prompts and you're still itching with that gift-giving spirit. Or you never signed up, but now you want in on the action. Or you did sign up, but you had to default, but then your schedule clears up and you can make gifts for people. It's Lil' Oathkeeper time!

What, you ask, is a Lil' Oathkeeper?

A Lil’ Oathkeeper is a gift that can be any size and shape. It can be art! A video edit! A moodboard! A fic shorter than 1000 words! Or… a fic longer than a 1000 words, but you probably know that. Anyone (you don’t even have to be signed up to the exchange) can make and gift a Lil’ Oathkeeper.

Here's how you do it:

Look at this prompt spreadsheet! See if anything sparks joy and inspiration.

Make your gift!

Post it into the Lil' Oathkeepers Collection! Follow the instructions as in the posting guide, but in the Collections field, type in JaimeBrienneFicExchangeLilOathkeepers2021 instead. If your gift is or involves images or videos, here’s how to embed them.

You've made someone's day brighter with your gift! Pat yourself on the back and treat yourself with a snack. You deserve it.

Will you open up the list for stocking stuffers or the equivalent again? For those of us not sure until nearly the end if we'll have the time/energy to write?

We are indeed! We have decided to call them lil oathkeepers, because we're like that (and stocking stuffers definitely seemed odd in a midyear exchange).

What’s a lil oathkeeper? 

Lil oathkeepers are little gifts anyone (yes, anyone! You don’t need to be signed up to the exchange to share the love) can give to any prompter who consents to have their prompts publicised. They can be art! Edits! Vids! Lil ficlets under 1000 words! Fics over 1000 words! Your creativity is the limit! On August 1st, we’ll be opening both the main exchange collection and the lil oathkeepers collection, as well as publicising a big ol’ spreadsheet filled with the prompts and preferences of consenting participants. You are welcome to create any fanwork from those prompts and gift it to the prompter via the collection, which will remain open until the end of the next exchange held by jaime-brienne-fic-exchange. 

What about defaulters, we hear you not ask? 

Well, what a convenient secondary question! In a previous post, we mentioned that participants who drop out after the July 25th defaulting deadliine or fail to have a complete fic posted by the end of the posting window would need to complete a giftwork before being allowed to participate in future exchanges. If this is the case, you will be asked to post a completed giftfic of at least 1000 words to the collection by the time signups open for a future exchange. This does not need to be to the prompter you received in the exchange (though that would be nice!)

Are prompts from previous exchanges available to view anywhere? In case there are shy, inexperienced writers who need a practice round (or twenty) before maybe daring to sign up for an exchange some time in the next ten years? Asking for a friend, obviously.

The prompts for the Festive Fest are still publicly available here, and when the main collection opens the prompts for the main exchange will be opened so that Lil' Oathkeepers can be made. They can be of any length and any format, so if you want to make post-it art, or do an interpretive dance, or write a ficlet, then you can! Lil' Oathkeepers will be anonymous at first as well and you don't need to have signed up to the exchange to participate.

The most important thing about writing anything is that you have fun and that you write what you want! This is a very encouraging and supportive fandom and I speak from experience when I say the best way to improve your writing is to write.

Hi there! I'm loving the fics in the exchange so far, thank you for organizing it!

How do we know which authors are participating? I want to make a guess but I'm not sure if they've even written for this exchange.

A good place to start is the Lil' Oathkeepers spreadsheet, where we have the prompts, preferences, squicks, and triggers of participants who consented to have this information be made public.

Keep in mind, though, that not all participants were comfortable with sharing their signups public, which means they're not on the spreadsheet. And some of the fics in the collection might be written by Knight Writers who may or may not also be signed up. But! The spreadsheet is a good place to start.

Also: if you see a prompt that sparks joy (or an author you've always wanted to give back to) and you have the time and energy to make a Lil' Oathkeeper for them, please do! Lil' Oathkeepers don't have to be fics over 1000 words. They can be shorter fics, poems, art, moodboards, video edits... sky's your limit! The Lil' Oathkeeper collection is anonymous until the author reveal date (21st August) but will continue to be open until the next exchange begins.
